• 'less' doesn't clear screen after quit

  The default behavior for 'less' is to clear the screen after quitting. This behavior stopped when I started using: export TERM=xterm Now 'less' leaves the last page I viewed on the screen, and I want to re-enable the default behavior of clearing the screen. Googling this problem I found that people use the following command in their ~/.screenrc: altscreen on I'm not sure if this is a mac-issue but I don't have this command available. I'm using bash shell on Mac terminal. Thanks!

• enable vnc on xen without having to shut down all the domains

  The last guy forgot to enable vnc connections on our Xen blade and I need to install a windows domain, is there any way I can enable vnc without shutting down half our company? From what I can tell I need to edit xend-config.sxp which would likely require a restart of xend, which means shutting down all the running domains. Is there any way around this? thanks :)

My CentOS machines have as many as six other users that share the systems, but the mpenning userid is the only one that has this issue. Approximately 5% of my logins see this issue, but no other usernames exhibit this behavior. Questions Given the kind of scripts I keep on these systems (which control much of our network infrastructure), I'm a little spooked by this and would like to understand what would cause my logins to occasionally miss source addresses. Is there anything (other than malicious activity) that would reasonably explain the behavior? Other than bash history timestamping, are there other things I can do to track the issue down? Informational Since this started happening, I enabled bash history time-stamping (i.e. HISTTIMEFORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T " in .bash_profile) and also added a few other bash history hacks; however, that does not give clues to what happened during the previous occurrences. All the systems run CentOS 6.3...   A Linux server running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with LAMP has a strange behaviour since last week: - cpu %sys higher than before, nearly equal %usr (before that, %sys just little compare with %usr) - IO reduce by half or 1/3 compare with the week before I try to diagnostic the process/cpu by some command (top/vmstat/mpstat/sar), and see that maybe it's a bit high on interrupt timer/resched. I don't know what that means, now open to any suggestion.

  I would like to plot my Nagios availability reports over time. Does anyone know a plugin that would do so? I found 'graphios' at https://github.com/shawn-sterling/graphios that would plot extra data provided by plugins. What I need instead is a plugin that would plot information such as: 'the service was in ERROR state 0.5% of the time last week, while the week before it was 1%'. This would be useful for knowing whether the overall stability is getting better.

  Although iTunes produces a very good comprehensive listing of all music which can be copied and pasted into excel to give a database of music, unfortunately it does not include"where" information as shown on the "Get Info" summary. As, in my own case, music files are in a number of different locations(drives and folders) I would like to be able to identify, quickly and simply,duplicate tracks as the last column in the excel listing.   I have a friend who is trying to view a Word document, consisting of a large table (nothing to do with me), that was fine until today. Whenever they scroll down past a certain limit, the content on the page is replicated once and after that the table cells are blank. The view also switches to Normal· They think that the document was last opened in OpenOffice (version 3.3.0, which opens the document fine now), could this cause it? Its Word 2000. What can we do?

  In a vsftpd server enviroment, shared various directories from nfs mountpoints, I can log in without problem, but when I send the first "ls", the vsftp give me the directory listing: lftp [email protected]:~ ls -rw-rw-rw- 1 1160 1016 392 Jun 06 09:28 test.gif but not give me the shell again (lftp client). In the server log I can see that the last message is: "150 Here comes the directory listing." Why happend this?

  As soon as I logon to Windows 7 64bit, the computer restarts. It isn't a hardware issue, as linux works fine. Windows 7 64 bit. Safe mode, last known good configuration etc, nothing makes any difference. Nor does startup repair or sfc. I used DaRT to check the event log, and nothing is recorded. How can I troubleshoot this?

  Certain letters are suddenly showing up as fractions in Mac's Mail program. Specifically, lowercase a = 1/2 lowercase b = 1/4 lowercase c = 3/4 Capitalized, they work fine, the other keys are working fine, and this only happens with this particular program, but I can't figure out what to change or what's wrong. It's Mac OS X 10.4.11 and an update was applied last night but other than that nothing's been changed (that I know of, I'm asking for someone else). Thanks.

• Is this distributed database server idea feasible?

  I often use SQLite for creating simple programs in companies. The database is placed on a file server. This works fine as long as there are not more than about 50 users working towards the database concurrently (though depending on whether it is reads or writes). Once there are more than this, they will notice a slowdown if there are a lot of concurrent writing on the server as lots of time is spent on locks, and there is nothing like a cache as there is no database server. The advantage of not needing a database server is that the time to set up something like a company Wiki or similar can be reduced from several months to just days. It often takes several months because some IT-department needs to order the server and it needs to conform with the company policies and security rules and it needs to be placed on the outsourced server hosting facility, which screws up and places it in the wrong localtion etc. etc. Therefore, I thought of an idea to create a distributed database server. The process would be as follows: A user on a company computer edits something on a Wiki page (which uses this database as its backend), to do this he reads a file on the local harddisk stating the ip-address of the last desktop computer to be a database server. He then tries to contact this computer directly via TCP/IP. If it does not answer, then he will read a file on the file server stating the ip-address of the last desktop computer to be a database server. If this server does not answer either, his own desktop computer will become the database server and register its ip-address in the same file. The SQL update statement can then be executed, and other desktop computers can connect to his directly. The point with this architecture is that, the higher load, the better it will function, as each desktop computer will always know the ip-address of the database server. Also, using this setup, I believe that a database placed on a fileserver could serve hundreds of desktop computers instead of the current 50 or so. I also do not believe that the load on the single desktop computer, which has become database server will ever be noticable, as there will be no hard disk operations on this desktop, only on the file server. Is this idea feasible? Does it already exist? What kind of database could support such an architecture?

• Which twitter client can synchronize unread tweets?

  Right now I'm forced to read all the tweets in a single client on a single device (TweetDeck on my Android phone). If I would switch to another device and/or client, I would need to search for the last unread tweet, which is sometimes complicated (too many tweets). So, the question: Is there a client who can keep the status (read/unread) on tweets across multiple devices? My target systems would be now Android and MS Windows, but also Linux might be handy.

  I've edited a pps file which was made with the 2003 version and saved also as compatible with Power Point 97-2003 but a friend a mine can't see the last version of the file. The original file can be seen by my computer friend. What can I do to make the new version of the pps file to be viewable on the computer of my friend? Any tips?
