• World Wide Publishing Service very slow to restart on IIS? Why?

  Every now and then, we look to restart our IIS server by restarting the "WWW Publishing Service". On most systems this would usually only take a minute or two, but this can often take up to 10 minutes to stop the server and restart. Does anyone know any way to work out what is taking so much time to stop the service? After reading up around the net I've learned this may be due to locked resources used by users and/or lower-level IIS cached items being recycled. But I cant seem to work out where I can validate if this is true on not. Also if anyone knows how to fix or speed this up, that would be excellent. We have a large codebase which contains over 280 aspx pages across the site. Our main domain contains about 100 aspx pages whilst the subdomains contain 15 or 20 each. I’m interested in those that are relevant in a typical home network and used over the Internet explains in detail how ADSL Internet connections work to the level of depth necessary so that I’m able to tweak and measure performance settings starts from the beginning but attempts to provide proper understanding rather than idiot-oriented steps to follow Basically, I’m interested in how these technologies work and tend to be implemented in hardware and software rather than “here’s what to do if…” I’m interested in Computer Networking by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

I understand that this can occur if the exchange information store is filling up with named properties... but I don't know how to determine which specific named property is at fault here. Is there a way to examine the DB for this type of info to see if there's a specific recurring named property that is consuming resources? -M

  I'm building a home office and looking for the ultimate desk. Lot's of resources about the great desk chairs, but very little on great modern desks. Requirements: $1000-$2000. Straight. No side cabinets. Attractive. Electric adjustable would be nice, but I haven't found very attractive looking one. We currently have one dedicated server with Rackspace in the UK of the following spec: HPDL385_G2_PrevGen HP Single Dual Core Opteron 2214 (2.2Ghz) 4GB RAM 2x 10,000 SCSI Drives in RAID 1 Our traffic is up to 550,000 UVs per month. The site runs off a PHP and MySQL setup. The database gets an absolute hammering, we have many complex queries joining multilpe tables. We are using APC for PHP caching. I'm getting to the stage where I've done as much DB and query optimisation as I can and wonder what the next step should be...... I've looked at memcache, but I've got the impression that his requires a large amount of RAM and ideally a dedicated box.... So is the next step to have two boxes; one for database, one for Apache? Or is there a step I've overlooked. Our load is usually around the 2 mark, but right now it's up at 20!

• Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

• Creating cookieless application on development machine with asp.net

  I am thinking about setting up a new domain to host static content on my website and have it cookieless just like Stackoverflow with their static domain. So before going ahead and buying the domain and setting it up I wanted to test it on my developement machine first under localhost (I have to mention that i am planning on having IIS running on my new domain for the static files). I therefore created a new application under IIS and disabled session state and forms authentication. When my main application needs resources like css, images and js , I use the path to the "static" application where they are hosted. The problem is that when I look at the request and the response for the requested files, they still have the session_id cookie defined as well as the asp.net authentication cookie. Is it at all possible to accomplish what i am trying to do on a development machine or do i have to just go ahead and purchase the new domain which hopefully with make things right? I tried to read about cookieless domain but can't figure out what i might be missing.

Server is running: Win Server 2008 w/ SP2 (64 bit) Backup Exec 2010 I am backing up to a Tandberg T24 tape library.

• What causes winsock 10055 errors? How should I troubleshoot?

  I'm investigating some issues with winsock 10055 errors on a chain of custom applications (some of which we control, some not) and was hoping to get some advice on techniques to troubleshoot the problem. No buffer space available. An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was full. From research, non-paged pool and ports seem to be the only resources which can cause this error. Is there another resource which might cause 10055 errors? Currently, we have perfmon counters setup on the applications and non-paged pool usage looks low in most circumstances. Open TCP connections looks low and I am unaware of another way to monitor ports. Since it only happens in production, we are unable to use more invasive counters. Is there some other tool or procedure you would recommend to diagnose which application is causing the issue?

• DNS updating issue

  Hey guys, I'm new to serverfault so please excuse me if I sound a tad nub. I work in an environment that is kinda peace mealed together, and I honestly don't know how it works. I'm new to the IT field and am still in school. When I replace a PC I rename the old one to mo-o-pcname and give the new one the proper name of mo-pcname (mo is a location thing we use so it really doesn't apply to the problem.) The new PC will function on the network; it will have the ability to access network resources (printers, file shares, etc) and it will have the ability to get out to the internet. However I can no longer ping the machine. It would appear as if the DNS (A) record is not getting updated or something. Like I said I'm kinda new to the field and just trying to work through this problem. Thanks for your help.

• Choosing between a dedicated and virtual dedicated server for my startup

  I'm about to launch a startup site I've been working on for some time, and I'm just now looking over hosting plans. The site's main feature is fairly processor-heavy (a lot of text processing), so I probably need something other then shared hosting to ensure I don't get shut down for overusing resources. I would like to spend as little as possible on hosting until the site starts generating income, so under-$60/mo is my goal. One caveat is that I need a Windows box for this particular site, so it's harder to get a good deal. For that price, I can either get a bottom-tier dedicated (2gigs ram, pentium 4) or a middle-tier VPS (3gb RAM, a bit more traffic and HD) for a few bucks more per month. I had a bad experience with a low-end VPS a few months ago, so making sure that whatever I get can handle the basic traffic of a website as well as giving me what I need (extra processing power) is essential. Do you have any suggestions as to which way to go, or a certain hosting company you've worked with that you can recommend?

• Why would you ever set MaxKeepAliveRequests to anything but unlimited?

  Apache's KeepAliveTimeout exists to close a keep-alive connection if a new request is not issued within a given period of time. Provided the user does not close his browser/tab, this timeout (usually 5-15 seconds) is what eventually closes most keep-alive connections, and prevents server resources from being wasted by holding on to connections indefinitely. Now the MaxKeepAliveRequests directive puts a limit on the number of HTTP requests that a single TCP connection (left open due to KeepAlive) will serve. Setting this to 0 means an unlimited number of requests are allowed. Why would you ever set this to anything but "unlimited"? Provided a client is still actively making requests, what harm is there in letting them happen on the same keep-alive connection? Once the limit is reached, the requests still come in, just on a new connection. The way I see it, there is no point in ever limiting this. What am I missing?

  We run Exchange 2003, but have a mix of Outlook 2003/2007/2010 in the environment. We have three rooms that need to be configured as resources. Some observations we've made with resource scheduling/booking are: Outlook 2010 users have trouble with the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method and require direct booking to be configured via registry Outlook 2007 users are unable to use direct booking (is this accurate?) Outlook 2003 users can only use the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method (is this accurate?) Direct booking cannot be combined with the auto-accept agent What is the correct way to setup resource scheduling in a mixed environment like this? Thanks, Daniel

  Possible Duplicate: How to disable Tomcat on linux? According to my server host, something called Tomcat is hogging all my resources and slowing down the server. As far as I'm aware I'm not using it as the only thing running on the server is Plesk and a few Wordpress installations. I'm a real dummy at using SSH, I can navigate to folders, change permissions and that's about it. Could somebody explain to me as if I'm a 5 year old how to disable TomCat (and also how to stop it re-enabling on startup)? Thanks!

• Limiting Sybase ASE 15 CPU usage on VM

  I've set up a single CPU Sybase ASE 15.7 test/hobby/experimentation system on a Debian Squeeze x64 KVM VM. I notice the CPU load goes to 100% and stays there. Definitely not a Sybase guru, only interested to see if some programs I'm running work on the database. Looking at Sybase docs it seems ASE detects the machine is idle and then takes over all processing just waiting for a connection (and if needed, doing some housekeeping apparently). Normally that would be fine but as it is running in a VM it's taking away processor resources other VMs could use - and the increased fan noise of the PC near my desk annoy me. I've tried to remedy this: set the "runnable process search count" parameter from DEFAULT (2000 IRC) to 3 in /opt/sybase/ASE-15_0/SYBASE.cfg from http://sybase.reygrobellet.com/tutorials/install_sybase_vb/standalone04_configure_oralin11#TOC-Configure-kernel I added this to my /etc/init.d/sybase startup script: echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space (though I don't think it'll make much difference) How can I tell Sybase to "behave" and not hog the processor - I don't mind reduced performance.

• Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a windows server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

  I am fairly familiar with setting-up IPv4 networks for bigger server configurations, only now I wanted to start familiarizing myself with doing the same for IPv6. I have been Googling for the second night in a row for things like: IPv6 network design, IPv6 for dummies, etc. So far most things you find go on about why IPv6 and the amazing amount of numbers that we have now. Yet I am looking for practical stuff, for example: what would be a good way to assign IP-number, as I understand it DHCP shouldn't be the default course of action. How do other assignment methods work with DNS configuration? what would be a good or standard way of dividing the network in to sub-nets? (database, application, web servers spread over multiple domains/applications and some what intertwined) In short I would like to find good resources with practical information books, webpages, etc.

• How do I objectively measure an application's load on a server

  All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

  I have few computers running. I want to get the average CPU usage of these computers and plot it as a graph. So I've collected CPU usage in regular intervals in these machines. So for each computer I have a data set of time and CPU usage. But the times at which CPU measurements are taken in different machines are not in sync. For example in 1st machine CPU may be measured in time 1, 5, 9. In the second machine CPU may be measured in time 2, 5, 8. I want to get an average data series from these different data sets. When implementing an RBAC model using an LDAP store (I'm using Apache Directory 1.0.2 as a testbed), some of the actors are obviously mappable to specific objectClasses: Resources - I don't see a clear mapping for this one. applictionEntity seems only tangentially intended for this purpose Permissions - a Permission can be viewed as a single-purpose Role; obviously I'm not thinking of an LDAP permission, as they govern access to LDAP objects and attributes rather than an RBAC permission to a Resource Roles - maps fairly directly to groupOfNames or groupOfUniqueNames, right? Users - person In the past I've seen models where a Resource isn't dealt with in the directory in any fashion, and Permissions and Roles were mapped to Active Directory Groups. Is there a better way to represent these actors? How about a document discussing good mappings and intents of the schema?

• Flexible virtualization infrastructure Design with libvirt

  I'm going to install a CentOS6 Server with Virtualization ( libvirtd ) capabilities on a DELL Server with Hardware RAID5 of around 6T of disk space ( It has 4x2T disks in a PERC700 RAID Controller ). I'm going then to install some guests which requires few resources except one that needs 500GB of disk space, 8/16GB of RAM and good performances. I was thinking about file images for guests storage but I'm not sure about the 500GB VM what needs good performances so that an LVM device could be better. So my question is what would be the best layout concerning: RAID setup ( RAID5, RAID1 + 1 disk for OS only. ) disk partitioning ( using the entire disk/ leave free space for future use and extending it with LVM ) guests storage management ( LVM devices or file images ( considering the 500GB VM that is performance demanding ) or mixed ) Where to put guests storage? /var/lib/libvirt/images or maybe in a custom dir separated from system /home/VMs Thanks in advance for any hint.
