• Sql Server 2005 cluster - unable to rename to old server name

  We have a sql 2005 cluster on W2K8 cluster. It is a named instance say SRV1\A. Then I built a new W2K8 (with a diff cluster service name) but the same service account. Then I installed a new sql 2005 cluster say SRV2\A. Now when I bring down the sql server resources on SRV1 and try to rename SRV2\A to SRV1\A through the cluster admin, I get the error the network name already exists. I have tried bringing an old cluster and installing a new cluster with the same name and it works. Why am I not able to rename the name? Any advice would very helpful.

  Hello, I'm using: Vista SP2 Visual Studio 2010 professional edition SQL Server 2008 Express R2 Dev Server (Cassini) This question has been asked several times. Unfortunately, I didn't find yet an answer that exactly appropriate for me, so it's not possible to apply the solutions I find on the web. I find solutions for Win XP, 7, 2003, sql server 2005. But not for the above combination. I just don't why this problem started a couple days ago. I removed sql server and added it again, but no good result. Either an answer to the question or links to resources will be helpful. Thanks for helping.

• Open source Distributed computing tool

  I want to set up distributed computing on my Local Area Network consisting a bunch of PCs. Say for the time being each one has the same OS - Windows 7. Is there any opensource tool available so that I can share the resources of these PCs over the LAN and increase the speed of my applications and the memory space. I know that if its a graphics intensive application then, it is not very practical, because the speed of LAN is much slower than Graphics processors. But I only want to share general applications, some basic softwares, Programming language IDEs etc. Can anyone shed some light on it? Thanks in Advance..

• Virtual memory on Linux doesn't add up?

  I was looking at System Monitor on Linux and noticed that Firefox is using 441 MB of memory, and several other applications are using 274, 257, 232, etc (adding up to over 3 GB of virtual memory). So I switch over to the Resources tab, and it says I'm using 462 MB of memory and not touching swap. I'm confused. What does the virtual memory amount mean then if the programs aren't actually using it. I was thinking maybe memory they've requested but aren't using, but how would the OS know that? I can't think of any "I might need this much memory in the future" function..

• Route from Cisco ASA over site to site VPN

  I want to be able to push f/w logging traffic to a server at a remote site. This server is accepting syslog traffic on port 514. In the ASA I've configured it to use this server as a syslog server. The Cisco f/w's inside interface address is 10.0.0.1 and I want to route over the link to an address of 192.168.1.1. The vpn is up and working between sites, and local clients at each site can access resources etc. How would I go about setting up the route from the f/w to this remote server only?

• Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

• Copying files SSH vs sFTP

  I'm a bit of a unix noob, but this question seems super basic, yet I can't find an answer anywhere. Basically, to my knowledge, sFTP is just FTP over ssh. So, why can't I drag and drop files from one folder to another on the server side like I can on ssh. Why when I want to unzip a .tar in a server folder, does it first want to copy it to my machine and then back? Why can't it just unzip like it can when I'm using the command line. I know that when I use the command line it is using the resources of the remote machine, but why can't sFTP do that too? Is there a way to execute commands which I would normally do over SSH, but in a gui? I'm tried mapping to the drive to my own machine, I've tried so many sFTP clients that it's silly. Is there another class of program that I just don't know of?

• Http 400 'Bad Request' and win32status 1450 when larger messages are sended to a WCF service

  Hi all, we sometimes receive Http 400 bad request resultcodes when posting a large file (10mb) to a WCF service hosted in IIS 6. We can reproduce this using SOAP UI and it seems that it is unpredictable when this happens. In our WCF log the call is not received, so we believe that the request does not reach the ASP.NET nor WCF runtime. This happens on multiple websites on the same machine each having their own application pool. All IIS settings are default, only in ASP.NET and WCF we allow bigger readerQuota's etc.... The win32status that is logged in the IIS log is 1450 which we think means "error no system resources". So now the question: a) how can we solve this b) (when a is not applicable :) ) which performance counters or logs are usefull to learn more about this problem? greetings, Tim

• Windows 2003 Cluster: Failover Delay

  I am testing the failover policies of our test failover cluster system. When I shutdown the node who is currently controlling the cluster (NODE1), it takes about 2 mins and 40 seconds before the next node on the preferred list (NODE2) takes control of the cluster. I tried changing the looksAlive and isAlive interval to 5000ms to all resources, but that didn't help. Looking at the Event Viewer of the remaining nodes, it shows that it was almost instantly detected that NODE1 was down. But it took another ~2:40 minutes for it to be removed from the live cluster list and for NODE2 to take over. Is there anyway of changing or shortening this "failover delay"? • Locking down a box on the web

  I'm a Java developer who is looking to put a game on the web. I'm not much of a web or server guy, though, and frankly I seem a little lost at where I should start with putting something on the web. My application works fine on my machine, and I'm sure I can make it work fine on any box I put it on. But the security of that box is pretty important. If I sign up for a standard hosting package (let's say from GoDaddy or something) can I simply tell them "make port 12345 open for communication" and let them handle the rest of the security details? If I can't, what are the things I'm going to need to know to prevent my game server from getting hacked to shreds? (Links to solid resources fine by me!) Thanks!

• Search files for text matching format of a Unix directory

  I am attempting to search through all the files in a directory for text matching the pattern of any arbitrary directory. The output of this I hope to use to make a list of all directories referenced in the files (this part I think I can figure out on my own). I have looked at various regex resources and made my own expression that seems to work in the browser based tool but not with grep in the command line. /\w+[(/\w+)]+ My understanding so far is the above expression will look for the beginning / of a directory then look for an indeterminate number of characters before looking for a repeating block of the same thing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

• Microsoft Word RTF formatting breaks after pasting in HTML and saving

  I have developed an HTML e-campaign which uses tables and all the ugly stuff required for HTML emails. I'm pasting this via Open File ( I paste the URL ) and it retrieves the resources ( images ) and pastes the layout in MS Word. When I go and save this as an RTF, close Word and reopen the RTF, the images are broken. Anyone have a clue as to how to work around this issue? I can confirm 100% that the image resource is VALID, it's through http and NOT https. I've tried various advanced options relating to tables/formatting and all to no avail.

• IIS requesting certificates even though set to ignore

  I have a web site in IIS 6 with directory security set to Require secure channel (SSL) and Require 128-bit encryption. Also, the Client certificates setting is set to "Ignore client certificates". When I hit https://servername/resource in Internet Explorer and Chrome , I am prompted for a certificate. I can cancel the prompt, and the resource will load, but I don't want to see this prompt at all. I looked at the virtual directories and resources within the web site, and they all have the ignore client certificates setting on. Could there be another setting, perhaps in the metbase, that is overriding the web site's directory security settings?

• Logging Bounced messages to a Database (Postfix with virtual domains/users)

  We have a postfix installation with a couple of virtual domains each with virtual users. These domains and users are mapped using a mysql database. I have been until now tracking bounces by parsing the postfix log file. I suspect there must be better and more efficient ways of doing this. I thought of three but I am not sure what is best: Write a Postfix content filter that logs the bounce and throws away the mail Use procmail - but I am not sure how procmail would work with virtual users who have no $HOME defined Write a script that POPs mail from mailboxes; parses and logs them and deletes the bounced email I would appreciate advise on which would be best from a maintenance point of view and efficient from conserving server resources point of view. • Slapd service won't start, unable to open pid file

  I'm trying to set up a test LDAP-server for some developers but I'm running into some trouble. service slapd start errors so I run /usr/sbin/slapd -d 1 and this gives me the following error at the end: unable to open pid file "/var/run/ldap/slapd.pid": 13 (Permission denied) slapd destroy: freeing system resources. slapd stopped. The rights for /var/run/ldap are as follows: root@pec:/var/run/ldap# ls -ld drwxr-xr-x 2 openldap openldap 60 2012-07-04 20:45 So I don't get why there is still a permission denied. • trouble backing up large mysql database

  I have a wordpress MU database with something like 10,000+ tables for various user's blogs. I need to upgrade wordpress MU to newest version, but want to backup the DB before hand. PHPMyAdmin fails to even load the page when i click export. Ive tried going into the server (windows) and using dos command line: mysqldump -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD> BACKUP.sql but it hangs for a minute and gives me the error: error 23: out of resources when opinging file '.\USERNAME\wp_1037_links.MYD' (Errorcode: 24) when using LOCK Tables What am i doing wrong, or should i be doing? Is PHPMyAdmin right for something this size? Is there a better way of doing this than the two methods i tried? **Note that this is not my site, so any suggestions as to the setup of the DB ill have to run by the owner. Im just here for WP related crap, this is kind of out of scope for what i was brought on to do.

• What happens to modern-ui apps when they aren't in the foreground?

  If I start a modern-ui app and then switch to a different app or a normal program running on the desktop, what happens to the first app? I've heard something about the first app being suspended, but realized that I don't really know that for certain. I mean, could you write a SETI@Home (BOINC) app if you wanted to, or will apps that aren't in the foreground always be suspended? Can you change that? I could see changing that based on available resources, running from AC vs. battery, etc. This morning I heard about an iPad being recovered thanks to the "Find my iPad" app, and was wondering whether you could write such a thing as a modern-ui app and have it work without being the running foreground app. (I'm aware that you'd just write a Windows service or similar, that's not what I'm asking about.)

• User cannot book a room resource in Exchange 2010

  Im having a problem with a specific user not being able to book a room resource. No error message is generated at all. The user attempts to add the room as a meeting resource and it simply doesnt register with the resources calendar. I have tested the resource with other accounts and other rooms for this user but it is only this room that is having issues for this user. This Exchange server was migrated from 2007 to 2010. All rooms except for the problem room were created back on Exchange 2007. This new room was created with Exchange 2010. Maybe this clue has something to do with the problem? • Handling inconcistent resource availability in Project 2007

  Afternoon all, I have four resources; a project manager, and three developers. The project manager can work anywhere from 9 to 5pm each day, but only for a total of 10 hours per week. It doesn't matter when he works, as long as he isn't over-allocated 10 hours per week. The developers on the other hand can only work up to 2 hours per day, for a total of 10 hours per week. If they work more than 2 hours in a day, they are over-allocated. How do I best configure Project to handle this kind of scheduling requirement?

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available? • Identical traffic

  Hi all, I am running an application server and logging all requests for analysis purposes later. One interesting trend I noticed last night was, I had a visitor from Texas on FIOS share identical traffic with bluecoat in California. What would cause the traffic to be identical? For every request the visitor made, bluecoat made one subsequently within milliseconds of his request. If it is caching, why would there be identical requests? Wouldn't it go through the cache / proxy on their end, and I would only see the proxied request? I'm just curious, this is an interesting pattern that shows similarities of a DDoS attack, but with far fewer resources. Is it possible that the visitor had malware on their computer? Any other ideas? Walter

• Idle VMware Guests Resource Consumption

  I want to setup a number of guests with multiple CPUs (4) and at least 4Gb ram running Ubuntu Linux. These machines will mostly be idle, but from time to time their workload will require all their resources, especially the CPU. The hosts are ESXi 5.x. The question is, am I right in thinking that the resource consumption of the machines when idle will be negligible? We know this true of disk and the CPU. The only concern left therefore is memory. Since ESX over-commits memory it makes sense that unused memory of any guest is paged out. If my thinking correct?

Now, i need to bring in Windows Authentication to the system whereby which CruiseControl.Net server webdashboard when accessed from a client machine(local machine associated with a common server), would be authenticated and be authorized to access the CruiseControl.Net features based on the authority of the logged in users.   I'm building a home office and looking for the ultimate desk. Lot's of resources about the great desk chairs, but very little on great modern desks. Requirements: $1000-$2000. Straight. No side cabinets. Attractive. Electric adjustable would be nice, but I haven't found very attractive looking one. • Stop SQL Server services from conveniently

  I have a general use laptop. I use it for games, development, and web surfing. I've just installed SQL Server 2008 with Analysis, Reporting, and Error reporting, as well as any of the other options on the installer. I also have a default instance of SQL server as well as a named instance. When I'm not doing development, I'd like to shut down these services conveniently. I'm thinking that a batch file would be good. What are the commands to shut these services down and release the associated memory and resources? It appears that: net stop MSSQLSERVER seems to stop the MSSQLSERVER instance. What about the other services?
