• mplayer audio desync

  I have and avi file and an ac3 file that contains an alternate audio stream. I run mplayer like: mplayer -audiofile foo.ac3 bar.avi mplayer takes the audio stream from the ac3 file as expected, but when I try to scroll the video using arrows or pgup/pgdown keys, the audio gets desynced: mplayer just starts playing the audio stream from the beginning. Do I have to pass any additional command line arguments in order to make it scroll properly without desyncing audio?

• How to update all MathType formulas in the MS Word for Mac

  When I open .doc file in Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and MathType 6 installed I get "U" in all formulas instead of "v". The original file was made in MSWord 2003 for Windows with MathType 6. But when I click and open the formula in MathType 6 and then save it back I get correct formula as it was originally written with "v". I am trying to figure out how to I trigger all formulas to be opened in MathType in batch without clicking on each. Or could it be fixed in another way

  Ah, confusion. I'm trying to install a python library called lxml as needed by a python script. I've been through numerous SU quesitons and answers. I haven't been able to make much progress. • Windows 7 remote desktop connection does not respond to mouse or keyboard

  Pretty much every time I connect to my work PC from home (both running Windows 7), I can see the screen refresh and signs of life (clock changes, notifications pop up), but I cannot interact with the remote machine at all. Mouse and keyboard input are both ignored. If I repeatedly reconnect, I will eventually get a connection that works. I think either a setting on my host machine, VPN client or work network is configured wrong. My home PC is running Windows 7 Professional. My work PC is running Windows 7 Enterprise. My VPN client is Cisco AnyConnect. Is this a problem anyone else has run in to? Any suggestions for settings to tweak?

  I have just installed the DuckDuckGo add-on in Firefox 11.0, running on XP SP 3. I would like to add additional parameters to the query string. However, any changes I make are not reflected in the query string when doing a search. I found the duckduckgo.xml file at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile Name.default\searchplugins. • Fan twitches and LEDs blink when computer is plugged in

  I just finished assembling a desktop for the first time. The specs are: Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H motherboard Core i3 530 CPU 4 GB DDR3 RAM 1 TB SATA hard drive 500 Watt PSU As soon as I plug in the computer, the "phase LED" starts blinking orange and the system fan LED blinks while the fan "twitches". This continues until about three seconds after I unplug the computer. This worries me a lot because I haven't even turned the computer on and it continues even after there is no power. I did make sure the PSU is on the proper power setting. What is causing this and how can I fix it? Is the motherboard dead?

• Windows Live Messenger giving me 8100030d on sign-in

  I'll bullet point things of note: Other accounts work on the same machine. This is a problem across a few machines. I can sign in no problem on some machines. I can use Web Messenger on the problem machines. I'm using the latest version of Messenger. I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted. Deleting the "Windows Live Contacts" folder doesn't help. Deleting the Contacts registry entries doesn't work. I'm not using AVG (and besides, can sign in with other accounts) It successfully connects (and signs me out of eBuddy) before erroring. It creates files in the Windows Live Contacts folder. Windows XP running on the problem machines. I'm not sure what other things it could be... This has also been asked at http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Internet_Email/Chat_-_IM/Q_25449997.html, so let's see which system gets me the better response...

• My powerpoint seems working in right-to-left

  I don't seem to find a way to switch it off. See picture. There seems to be no way to say the paragraph is not RTL. There are addable RTL buttons in the customize ribbon dialog, but they are grayed in ribbon cfg view, even though buttons that are actually there are also grayed in the same way. Looks like there's no way to get some other buttons shown on the office ribbon. I already found how to do it with VBA, but I find no way of doing it from UI and I spent much time searching and trying. Am I senile?

  Several hours after each boot the Windows 7 taskbar thumbnails stops appear. Click the currently opened window (it should not be a group of windows) - it will collapse. Than hover the mouse over any other window icon, wait a second, and nothing happens. After that no thumbnail appear at all. There is the way to return them back. You need to open two windows of the same application (group of windows), and click their group - two thumbnails should appear. After that thumbnails are back, until you click currently opened window... It there a way to fix it?

I remember Ctrl+Alt+Del from the old days on PC's, but I don't know if there's a keyboard-combination I could use on this Datalogic BlackJet, and I can't seem to find a reset pin-hole. I tried taking the battery out, and waiting a few hours, but that totally reset the device from ROM, undoing all setup I'd done.

  I am desperately needing a solution to binding certain applications to specific network interfaces. ForceBindIP seems to be my only solution. Although the website claims it works up to XP, Google says that many users running 7 have had it work successfully. I have UAC disabled, yet still: Does anyone know why this is happening? If not, does anyone know a viable alternative to ForceBindIP? I'm a gamer and I'm addictively trying to torrent on a secondary connection while playing games online.

• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

• Inexpensive, simple screen recording application for mac

  I am more and more consistently running into the need to create screencasts (record my screen) for clients to show them how to use programs or websites. Up until now I've been using Jing and it's been wonderful. But I would like something that can give me something less annoying than a .swf. A .mov or, best of all, something that plays without fuss on Mac and Windows. Also, the 5-minute limit is annoying, but not show stopping. Basically, I'd like to be able to actually give them the file on a CD or something instead of relying on whatever host I use staying up for eternity. To sum up, here's what I require: Record a portion or all of the screen. Records audio from mic while recording screen. Exports files easily playable on Mac and Windows (requiring Quicktime is okay, but not ideal) Will work on Mac OS 10.5+ Allows recording videos of at least 5 minutes. Text in recorded videos is easily readable when exported. Bonuses points for: Records videos greater than 5 minutes Exported videos will work in Windows Media player without any fuss. I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard yet but I know it has some screen recording stuff built in but I don't know if it would be sufficient or not. The reason I say, "simple" is because most of the applications I've seen do much more than I need (I mean, Jing is nearly perfect for my needs) and cost more than I would like to spend.

  I can't get out of a login loop of a particular admin user. After entering the password the login screen is shown again after about a minute. Other users work fine. It started happening after a simple reboot. Can you please help me? Thank you! • Viewing a large-resolution VNC server through a small-resolution viewer in Ubuntu

  I have two Ubuntu computers, one with a large screen resolution (1920x1600) that is running default ubuntu vnc server. I have another computer that has a resolution of about 1200x1024 that I use to vnc into the server (I use the default ubuntu vnc viewer). Now everything works fine except there are annoying scrollbars in the viewer because the server's desktop resolution is so much higher than the viewer's. Is there a way to: 1) Scale the server's desktop down to the viewer's resolution. I know there will be a loss of image quality, but I am willing to try it out. This should be something like how windows media player or vlc scales down the window (and does some interpolation of pixels). 2) Automatically shrink the resolution of the server to the client's when I connect and scale the resolution back when I disconnect. This seems like a less attractive solution. 3) Any other solution that gurus out there use? I am sure someone has experienced this before (annoying scroll bars) so there must be a solution out there. • Should I use 802.11n with a 15 Mbps ISP (Comcast Cable)?

  I currently own a LinkSys-WRT54GL 802.11a/b/g wireless router, and my ISP is Comcast Cable providing me with 15 Mbps (that's bits per second, I believe) download speed. I am wondering if there is any benefit with using an 802.11n wireless router to access the Internet? The maximum theoretical speed of the WRT54GL router is 54 Mbps (802.11g), which is faster than the 15 Mbps provided by my ISP. I know that 802.11n has a max bandwidth of 300 Mbps, and it would help for intra-house transfers, such as streaming video from one computer to another. But is there any benefit to 802.11n for Internet activity, such as web browswing, gaming, and streaming video from Netflix?

• Windows 7 Backup - Does the "system image" include all the files on my drive?

  I have a new Dell Laptop that I have setup the way I like it. I want to use Windows 7 to do a backup and then restore that backup on a different hard drive (solid state). When I setup the backup info (manually) for Windows 7 Backup there is a little checkbox at the the bottom that says: Include a system image of drives: RECOVERY, OS (C:) I can also select to backup all my data on the C: drive (the only hard drive I have anything on) as well as some libraries (which are on my C: drive so no point in selecting those). The question I have is, does Windows 7 Backup just somehow know what needs to be restored (ie program files and Windows and the registry ....? Or is it really making a full restorable copy of the C: drive? (If the later is true then I don't need select the C: drive to be "backed up" if I don't plan to access the files except by restoring them right? (Because the system image will already have it all.)) So, which way is it? What is saved in the System Image?

• Acer Aspire ASE700-UQ660A will not respond to power button

  This is something of a continuation of this question. I am now completely unable to boot this computer. The last time I used it, I used hibernation mode. When I needed to use it again, it would not respond at all to the power button, keyboard, or mouse. I tried: Holding down the power button for 15 seconds pressing the power button Unplugging the power cord for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and trying again Removing the motherboard battery for over a minute and reinstalling it Before removing the motherboard battery, none of the lights on the front of the computer lit up. After reinstalling the battery and plugging the power cord back in, the light behind the power button is constantly illuminated (without even pressing the power button), but there is still no response to the power button, no fans turned on, nothing else that would indicate that it is running.   I'm new to Linux and I am interested in installing it on an older computer I have. I want to set a web server up, and install PHP and Perl on it. My PC is an older HP Pavilion a255c, with an Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of RAM. I will probably add some more memory later. This PC is more like a sandbox than anything, but I would like to get started quickly with the OS. Is there a particular flavor of Linux I would need to download because I have an old computer? I was thinking about Ubuntu, but I'm not sure what version to go with.

• Is there a way to know what the Windows Disk Cleanup utility will delete?

  When I run the Disk Cleanup utility that's built into Windows 8, it tells me that it can free up 53GB by deleting 'Temporary Files'. However, a CCleaner analysis on default settings only finds about 300MB worth of space to free up, so I'm wondering what Disk Cleanup has found that CCleaner does not. Note that this question appears to be similar to what I'm asking, but the accepted answer says that 'Temporary Files' refers to %TEMP%. I've already cleared out most of C:\Users\Cam\AppData\Local\Temp, and it now has only 230MB of stuff in it, even with system files showing. So where is this 53GB located? Is there a way to find out what it is? Edit: I should note that this is on a 110GB SSD, so it's almost half the drive. And in fact I'm only using 86GB, so if it's really going to clear out 53GB, that would be more than 60% of the stuff on my C drive. I'm starting to think that Disk Cleanup caches its analysis, and hasn't updated since I started cleaning up the drive earlier today. Although when I run it it says that it's 'Calculating' how much space can be saved, and it takes about 5-10 seconds to do so. Hmmm... Edit2: Here is what my hard drive looks like, according to SpaceMonger (Right click-Open image in new tab, so you can see it properly): You can see why I was starting to think that the 53GB figure is actually wrong. Even if 'Temporary Files' includes my hiberfil and everything in WinSxS (about 13GB total), that would be 26GB, which is only halfway there. Hard to see where there's 53GB of stuff to delete.
