  • Any tips to learn how to program with severe ADHD?

    I have a difficult time trying to learn how to program from straight text-books. Video training seems to work well for me in my past experiences with PHP. I am trying my hardest to stay focussed and push through. Specifically I am looking to start indie game development. Over the last two weeks I have been trying to pick the "right" language and framework to develop with. I started going through Python, but I am not really enjoying the language so far. I am constantly looking through this website to compare this language to that, and keep getting distracted. Aside from all of this, is it possible to become a programmer when you have trouble focussing?     My netbook only supports openGL version 1.4, my GPU is intel gma 3150, so for you what is the best library/tools to use or somewhat great move to make/advice, there are no wrong answers, (I am trying to create a game) PS: I already check the net for resources but, opengl (redbook) 4th edition is scarce (and redbook for v1.1 is already deprecated and is very OLD than what I'm looking for), besides I don't have money to buy a new laptop or a opengl book from online shop because international delivery is very expensive, I'm from outside US.

    I am a beginning to enter the world of game development. Lately, I researched that "OPENGL" is one of the tools to use in graphics, then I found out about "SFML" (I think that its a library or something that uses opengl). I am so confuse because all books/ sites said using "GLUT", but many people/fellow developers said that I must use a more updated one like "SFML" but sfml has few/none tutorials. What I am trying to say is "how to create own library or something like your own glut or sfml", and why does opengl has no source code? And how can I use the EXACT(not glut/sfml) opengl in my c++ program? I am so confuse....

  • Do employers hiring for software jobs care about the classes you took in a Computer Science Masters program?

    I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester (Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book (I already have both books actually) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think, more importantly, what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

  • Can you change a license once you pick one?

    I am working on a product that I don't feel is completely ready but I have a set of users that are very interested in using it now as "alpha" testers. I would like to give them the product now for free as "alpha" testers, but I would like to later license the software. Is this possible? Can anyone point me to any links/books/articles/etc? Thanks. EDIT: Due to the lack of my clarity and the reponses to the question I thought I should add this statement. I haven't decided if I am going to close-source or open-source this project yet. The user base that wants to get their hands on it now has kind of surprised me and I was concerned about what my options are as far as being able to give it to them now as open-source and later change to closed-source, or even vice versa.     One of my goals for next year is to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. As far as I'm aware, it is not too different from Informatics Olympiads in other countries. What would be the best way to study for this? What content should I pay particular attention to while learning in Python? I am currently using the book 'Learn Python the hard way', but are there any other books worthy of a mention?   • Category to Page and blocking category url via robots.txt -Good for SEO?

    I am using a template which in the pages it allows me to add sidebars / more content under and above the content I want to pull from a category which is very helpful. If I create pages to display my categories content wont the page urls go in conflict with the category urls? By conflict I mean causing a duplicate content error? What I thought might help was to block from robots.txt the category urls of the blog ex. /category/books /category/music Would that be a good practice in order to avoid the duplicate content penalty? Any tips appreciated.

    Hi I have recently started to learn C#/ASP.NET WebForms and after reading two books I thought I was ready to create my first web application. Problem is I could not have been more wrong. Although I am not quite a beginner as a programmer and have done some programming in Java (a Monopoly game), JavaScript (using jQuery), and PHP (create templates for WordPress), I never really created something that is database driven, and I can't seem to figure where to start. I am very confident in my HTML/CSS/jQuery skills, so that is not the problem. My end goal after becoming comfortable in ASP.NET WebForms is to learn MVC, ADO.NET, and the Entity Framework, and start a career as a .NET developer. I would like if someone could tell me some tutorials that build ASP.NET WebForms applications, such as a blog, so I can see what are the steps in creating an ASP.NET WebForms database driven application. I already have to projects in mind for ASP.NET. One is building a blog and the other building a job board.

    hi I'm currently looking at how to simulate easily some stellar systems (meaning some central stars and then some planets with maybe satellites), in order to allow later some space based strategy game (hence with space ships moving around). This should all be based around time (so the state of each system differs through time) I'm quite struggling with the math behind this topic, like for example: - ellipse related math, - creating the path from planet A to B having time in mind (respective positions will change over time)... Do you know of any resources for that ? I wouldn't mind even buying books about it... thanks in advance best space borg side note: how to display all this stuff isn't a matter at this point in time, I'll simple plans for that (basically sticking to 2D and a "high level view" with no space ships/planets details, just markers)
