  salute.. I am learning dynamic allocations for multidimensional arrays in a book and I found some ways for that, And now haven't problem in it. But the author of the book shows us a way, but it doesn't work correctly. It is this: pbeans = new double [3][4]; // Allocate memory for a 3x4 array And this is the error: error C2440: '=' : cannot convert from 'int (*)[4]' to 'int *' how should i define pbeans ( if this type of coding is legal)? and what is the problem exactly? • Better understanding of my SQL transactions

  I just realized that my application was needlessly making 50+ database calls per user request due to some hidden coding -- hidden in the sense that between LINQ, persistence frameworks and events it just so turned out that a huge number of calls were being made without me being aware. Is there a recommended way to analyze individual transactions going to my SQL 2008 database, preferably with some integration to my Visual Studio 2010 environment? I want to be able to 'spy' on individual transactions being made, but only for certain pieces of my code, and without making serious changes to either the code or database.

  I recently took on a project to build a webpage. I am an experienced developer but never worked with coding a psd file into a webpage. Now, the psd file uses a specific font, which I do not have probably, as I can see it in grey and [ ] at the bottom of the fonts list. Sorry for the naive question, but what am I supposed to do from the client's point of view? Should I have that font? Should I buy it? Can I extract it from the psd file? And then, does it come into the web-page as @font-face? Thanks for any suggestion

• MVC way of handling data input

  I have a data input module where I add the information of my product and its sub information like: product basic info product price info product price details price info and price details are related to product and are lists In my web forms approach I would store my main product object on the view state and I would populate it's pricing info and details while doing ajax postbacks. This way I can create a compact module that is very user friendly in terms of defining a lot of data from one place without the need to enter these data from seperate modules. And when I am done I would do one product.save() and that would persist all the data to the respective tables on db. Now I am building similar app on .net mvc framework and pondering on what would be the good way of handling this on mvc. I don't resonate towards storing all this on client side till I click save. And saving to the db after each action makes me remember the days I was coding on asp. Will appreciate your inputs on ways to approach this on mvc framework

• VB.Net HTTPWebRequest Speed is slow comparing Python URLOpen

  Hi I am coding a web-crawler which will crawl the websites and selectively parse different sections of a web site. I am a .Net developer so the choice was obvious that I did it in .Net but the speed was very slow which included downloading and parsing of HTMLPages Then I tried to just download the contents first using .Net and then same domains using python but the python was very impressive in downloading data. I have achieved downloading using python but the later part is not that easy to code in python, which obviously i don't want to do. The same batch of domain which took 100 seconds in Python was taking 20 minutes in .Net based crawler I tried http://www.eqlit.com/ to download and in took 8 seconds in Python and same was taking 100 Seconds in .Net crawler Does anyone anyone have any idea why this is slow in .Net but fast in python?

• Three boolean values saved in one tinyint

  Hello, probably a simple question but I seem to be suffering from programmer's block. :) I have three boolean values: A, B, and C. I would like to save the state combination as an unsigned tinyint (max 255) into a database and be able to derive the states from the saved integer. Even though there are only a limited number of combinations, I would like to avoid hard-coding each state combination to a specific value (something like if A=true and B=true has the value 1). I tried to assign values to the variables so (A=1, B=2, C=3) and then adding, but I can't differentiate between A and B being true from i.e. only C being true. I am stumped but pretty sure that it is possible. Thanks

  Hi all, I'm not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere and I can't seem to find anything through google that isn't a "Hello World" example... I'm coding in C# .NET 4.0. I'm trying to develop a console application that will open, display text, and then wait for the user to input commands, where the commands will run particular business logic. For example: If the user opens the application and types "help", I want to display a number of statements etc etc. I'm not sure how to code the 'event handler' for user input though.   My day job involves coding with Perl. At home I play around with Python and Erlang. For Perl I want to indent my code with two spaces. Whereas for Python the standard is 4. Also I have some key bindings to open function declarations which I would like to use with all programming languages. How can this be achieved in gVim? As in, is there a way to maintain a configuration file for each programming language or something of that sort?

• Change all instances of object to iframe for IE using Jquery

  I was wondering if it would be possible to use jquery to change all object tags on a site automatically to iframe for IE 8 and below. I would like this so that it can be xhtml 1.1 valid and not have to be double coded all the time and you would not have to focus on non-standard browsers. The data attribute would have to be changed to src, I would like frameborder="0" to be inserted, and all styles set to the object tag also set to the iframe tag. I don't want this to turn into a debate on iframes vs objects, I just thing this would be a huge time saver and would encourage proper strict xhtml coding. Thanks for any input!

  I am creating a website using IonCube. I can use some PHP coding in the HTML page templates, however, I would like to know how to get the FULL URL plus a link when I click on it. For example, My current URL is: http://example.com/site_search.php?option_1=1&option_2=1 and when I click on a link, it directs me to another added option, so the result will be: http://example.com/site_search.php?option_1=1&option_2=1&option_3&option_4=8 As you have seen, these are options, and users can select anything. • Third Party Libraries and Technologies very Java Programmer must be aware of?

  I agree that this is a very subjective question but as a student of Java , I get suggested good libraries and technologies for Java by my mentors at work. For example, I was not aware of Google Guice for Dependency Injection, awesomeness of Java Reflection APIs, ORMs like Hibernate or stuffs you could do with libraries like Hadoop. I want to collect and share some of the libraries that exemplifies good java programming (so that beginners like me could code walk and emulate the coding practice), teach unique concepts to Java (for example Dependency Injections or ORM) and/or are really interesting libraries that a student like me would get to do interesting projects on (eg. Hadoop). I redited this question 3 times to make it more specific : ). I am sorry if I am really not clear in my intentions. But some kind of a list of good concepts and third party libraries for Java could really help some of my intern friends here at work. Thank you.

  I have read that a variable should never do more than one thing. Overloading a variable to do more than one thing is bad.   I have an array $rows where each element is a row of 15 tab-delimited values. I want to explode $rows into a 2D array $rowData where each row is an array element and each tab-delimited value is assigned to a different array element. I've tried these two methods without success. I know the first one has a coding error but I do not know how to correct it. • html embeded php code not executing when hosted on iis

I am doing my coding in Windows XP/IIS 5.1. I have PHP setup correctly because i have no problem running .php file. The problem seem to me that IIS can't render php code embedded inside html. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or should i switch to Apache?

  Having been writing Java code for many years, I was amazed when I see this C++ statement: int a,b; int c = (a=1, b=a+2, b*3); My question is: Is this a choice of coding style, or it has real benefit? (looking for a practicle use case) I think the compiler will see it the same as following: int a=1, b=a+2; int c = b*3; (What's the offical name for this? I assume it's a standard C/C++ syntax.)

• Is it legal for a C++ reference to be NULL?

"NULL\n" : "!NULL\n"); } int main() { int i; int *ip = NULL; fn(i); // prints !NULL fn(*ip); // prints NULL return 0; } More recently, I ran into this comment about C++ references: [References arguments make] it clear, unlike with pointers, that NULL is not a possible value. But, as show above, NULL is a possible value. So where is the error? In the language spec? (Unlikely.) Is the compiler in error for allowing that? Is that coding guide in error (or a little ambiguous)? Or am I just wandering into the minefield known as undefined behavior?

  Hi, I have been reading templates,functors,callback function for the past week and have referred some good books and articles. I however feel that, unless I can get good practice - programming in templates and use functors-callbacks there is no way I can really understand all the concepts or fluently use them while coding. Could anyone suggest some articles or books or websites where , there is a definition of the problem and also a solution to the same. I could just write code for the problem and check later on if my solution is good enough.. I am also aware that some of our stack-overflow members are experts in templates and callback functions. It would be great if they could design a problem and also post a solution , where a lot of template beginners like me could benefit.

• C++ new line not translating

  First off, I'm a complete beginner at C++. I'm coding something using an API, and would like to pass text containing new lines to it, and have it print out the new lines at the other end. If I hardcode whatever I want it to print out, like so printInApp("Hello\nWorld"); it does come out as separate lines in the other end, but if I retrieve the text from the app using a method that returns a const char then pass it straight to printInApp (which takes const char as argument), it comes out as a single line. Why's this and how would I go about to fix it?

I have taken one Hidden value and assigning value to that hidden variable in Java-script. aspx: <input type="hidden" runat="server" id="hdnProductionIds" value="0" name="hdnProductionIds" /> JS: document.getElementById("ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_hdnProductionIds").value = "123"; I want to use that hidden value in server side coding(vb.net).   Hi, We've written several Outlook Add-ins for various projects and have now been asked to look at writing a Exchange server add-in. We will need to inspect all incoming / outgoing msgs and tag / file them into a document management system. If it's a message that we are interested in we would ideally like to change the default icon that is displayed in Outlook. We could I guess settle for Categorising / colour coding the email but we've been asked for a icon. Any guidance on how to get started / killer reference apps much appricaiated. • Large strings: Text files or SQL DB?

  I am coding a forum system using PHP. I am currently storing a threads ID, title, author, views and other attributes in an SQL database and then storing the thread body (the HTML and BBcode) in text files inside a folder named after the thread ID. In practise it's really simple to grab the database values then just grab the thread body from the text file, but I was wondering if this is the 'proper way'? I have personally no problems doing this but if it turns out it is massively inefficient and I should instead store both the thread body HTML and BBcode in the database instead then I will change. However, to me it seems wrong to store such a (very possibly) huge string of multi-line text along with lots of different characters in a database - I was taught that databases are more for short field 'values' rather than website content. I would just like a definitive answer to this because it's been bugging me for ages as to wherever I’ve been doing it properly. Does anyone know how popular forum systems store threads?

Something like this has to exist. I'm not really opposed to coding it myself, I just don't want to go through the hassle if its already been done.
