• C: using a lot of structs can make a program slow?

  I am coding a breakout clone. I had one version in which I only had one level deep of structures. This version runs at 70 fps. For more clarity in the code I decided the code should have more abstractions and created more structs. Most of the times I have two two three level deep of structures. This version runs at 30 fps. Since there are some other differences besides the structures, I ask you: Does using a lot of structs in C can slow down the code significantly? Thanks.

• jQuery model-view-controller vs Spring MVC

  my question is what potential problems or difficulties would be with implementing usual web app with somewhat reach user interface (multiple dynamic tabs, accordians and so on) using jQuery MVC approach with Spring REST vs using Spring MVC. Problems what I can think of could be: I will not be able to use Spring security fully, JavaScript coding could become hard to manage, any form verification becomes not easy to manage... what else? and does jQuery MVC with REST make sense at all? On other side jQuery with MVC and REST move all GUI concerns to JavaScript side (whether it is bad or not) and leave all data manipulation to server side.

• App crashing on open on Motorola Backflip only

  I have recently published my second app on the Android Market. I've gotten a few e-mails about the app crashing on open, and all users were using the Motorola Backflip. It seems to work fine on all other devices. The app shows the background image, but crashes right after that. Is there something different I have to do when coding for that device? The strange thing is that it is very similar to my first app, which seems to work just fine for them. The major difference is that my second app is a paid app, and uses Android Licence Verification. My implementation should catch any license errors though, and I've tested this on my device. Users have uninstalled and reinstalled the app without success. I'm stumped. The other thing they're reporting is that the icon doesn't even show properly, but rather is a gear in a box, which makes me think that something goes awry very early in the installation process.

• Display username to logged in user only?

  I have a Wordpress blog set up to display comments as "Anonymous User" by hard coding it into the comments.php file. I would like to have it say the user's Username next to their comment and ONLY display that Username to THEM. In other words, if they're a guest, they'll see "Anonymous User" and if they're a registered/logged in DIFFERENT user, they'll still see "Anonymous User", but if it's THEIR comment it'll say "Your Comment" or their own username. • WordPress [img] tags

  Hey guys, I'm trying to allow that standard BB [img] [/img] tags on my WordPress blog. I got this snippet from the net, but it only works on lower case [img] tags. I'd like it to apply to both [img] and [IMG]. • Trying to get excel 2003 into already made windows form

  good afternoon everyone :) I got sucha dilemma! (hate being new at stuff!) What my problem is is that I have a project that is in full design mode swing right now. I built it using the Windows form.. Anyways, on one of my forms..that I already started building (very painstakingly).. Minds have changed and now what needs to be on that form is either a full excel 2003 workbook..or at the very least..excel worksheet. The problem is that I have not been using studio 2008 for long..and coding experience shows the same. Can someone please tell me how the heck I can put a worksheet or a workbook on that form without starting my whole project over using office forms? Please..go slow with this newbie cuz i really dont know anything and Jargon is confusing me even more :( thanxxXXX :)

• Third Party Libraries and Technologies every Java Programmer must be aware of?

  I agree that this is a very subjective question but as a student of Java , I get suggested good libraries and technologies for Java by my mentors at work. For example, I was not aware of Google Guice for Dependency Injection, awesomeness of Java Reflection APIs, ORMs like Hibernate or stuffs you could do with libraries like Hadoop. I want to collect and share some of the libraries that exemplifies good java programming (so that beginners like me could code walk and emulate the coding practice), teach unique concepts to Java (for example Dependency Injections or ORM) and/or are really interesting libraries that a student like me would get to do interesting projects on (eg. Hadoop). I redited this question 3 times to make it more specific : ). I am sorry if I am really not clear in my intentions. But some kind of a list of good concepts and third party libraries for Java could really help some of my intern friends here at work. Thank you.

• C++ IDE for OSX

  When i was at university i wrote a lot of C++. I primarily used either Visual Studio (at the time it was version 6) or VIM (if i was on linux) as an editor to write my code. Since i have graduate and have been working primarily in web programming i have stopped writing C++. Since i graduated i have also bought myself and started using my Mac exclusively. I am now starting to get back to my C++ coding (just for fun) and would like an opinion on good IDE's for Mac. I am currently using xCode which seems kinda cool because it has everything built into it. Do any of you have any other IDE's that you would suggest that i give a shot or should i just stick to xCode?

• What is your favorite colorscheme FOR PROGRAMMING in Vim?

  I think this is a relevant question for programmers and I'd like to hear other people's answers because some syntax highlighting color schemes are better on the eyes than others. This can affect productivity as much as ergonomic keyboards or anything else on here. It's about comfort and productivity. So, I'm curious. Do you find some color schemes better adapted for some languages over others? At the other end of the spectrum, I think coding without syntax highlight is awful and slow going. • Making swedish characthers show properly in Windows Command Prompt using Python in Notepad++

  The title explains it well. I have set up Notepad++ to open the python script in the command prompt when I press F8 but all Swedish characters looks messed up when opening in CMD but perfectly fine in e.g IDLE. This simple example code: #!/usr/bin/env python #-*- coding: UTF-8 -*- print "åäö" Looks like this. As you can see the output of the bath file I use to open Python in cmd below shows the characthers correctly but not the python script above it. How do i fic this?

• jquery issues - it wont change it accordingly

  My coding isnt linking properly , its meant to use jquery to detect the OS and change the link accordingly , however it isn't.   I am making 3 board games, and I have started my coding off in one class. Now that i wanted to move around it is giving me problems. In my view class I just want to have the main frame where users can pick from the games. And in the other views, i.e the childrens of view class i want to have the interface for the actual games. Now that the Jframe frame = new frame was created in the parent class, it cannot find the variable frame in the children classes.

• How to replicate Google "Hangouts On Air" stream combining functionality?

  I've been researching this one for quite a bit but haven't found any solid leads. I have a Wowza/Flash app with video chatroom functionality and would like to combine the streams server-side into one video/audio stream in order to be sent to a live Youtube channel. I've found a couple projects such as jMixer and some helpful keywords such as "vision mixer" to help with my search but looking for any previous experience or new ideas. The other option is building something like it myself with a commercial video decoding/encoding library to raw frames, stitching the frames together, then encoding it. I was originally going down this route but put project on hold. What are some ideas, keywords, or existing software (open source preferred) to take those live streams and combine them into one in real-time? Or is coding it myself the required route? Thanks!

By cover I mean, that for every integer within its range there is such real number that this equality holds: real == int Or in another example, let's say I have the biggest real number which is smaller than given integer. When I add "epsilon" will I get this number equal to given integer or bigger than integer?   I wish to create a Java Socket server which can be connected to using Javascript and/or Flash. I have experience in Connecting to sockets in flash, and using a comet like system in Ajax. I wish to make a live communication system, which will intale multiple connections to the server from various clients, needing almost instant communication between peers. I coded a system like this in PHP but I want to convert it to Java, simply because I don't want the PHP engine to be tied up on this Sever, as it serves all the web stuff normally on the site, and i've heard is more powerful for this sort of thing.   I've been trying to learn Action Script 3 the past few weeks, making tiny interactive games to learn the basics. I stumble upon a problem every now and then but most of the times google helps me out. But this problem has got me stuck so please help: The main stage contains two objects(movieclips), the player and a wall. The player has got his own code so when I drag in the player object I don't have to write any code into the main stage to be able to move the player. This all worked pretty well and I now wanted to add the wall so the player actually has something to bounce into. Now here is the problem, I want to check if the player touches the wall, I've done this before but that was when I used the main stage as my coding playground instead of putting the code in movieclips. How can I check if the player hits the wall within the movement code of the player object?

  My wish is to know how I can program a mobile website, that fit to all mobile phones. Are there any special approaches to recognize a device and render the code according to it? Which tools and coding languages are required? My first thought was to hold the website in XML, which would be parsed depending on the device. You have to consider old phones, even devices with only wap support. For example: The mobile website has to recognize Nokia N75 and render/send the code that looks optimal for this device. Same thing with an iPhone or a Motorola Razr.

• Why does Microsoft's IE even exists?

  For real what is the point? Why can't it display pages properly like Chrome, safari or Firefox? If you want to make a web application (modern 2.0 site) that supports IE you will end up almost doubling your coding time as IE has its own interpretation of things. PLUS they just keep on changing how it renders pages from version to version (5,6,7,8) unbelievable. Microsoft hates web designers. i used to handle rendering problems with extra JS scripts and CSS files but i had enoughs of this $hit all over my pages: <!--[if IE]> .... <!--[if IE 8]> .... <!--[if IE 7]> .... <!--[if IE 6]> .... No more IE support for any of my projects, So you guys think im exaggerating or IE is really a pain in the @@$?

  While coding in Ruby I did not really miss the type-orientedness of Java or C++ so far, but for some cases I think it is useful to have them. For Python there was a project PyProtocols which defined interfaces and protocols for objects. Does a similar initiative also exist for Ruby? I would like to be able to declare the expected parameters for some methods for some objects (for the entire code I find such think useless). It the method during the execution receives an unexpected input, it tries to adapt it or if it cannot, it throws an exception. Does something similar exist for Ruby? Introducing types for a type-less language like Ruby might sound freak, but I think types are sometimes useful. Thanks for help.

• Is there a way to arbitrarily load Resources at runtime in Android?

  I've got some XML resources in my Android app. Each one has a different name like "bicycle.xml" and "car.xml". I'd like to know if there's a way to load resources based on conditions during run time. As an example... Say I had a text input in my app. When the user enters "bicycle", my app can look up an XML resource by that name, parse and load it. Whereas if they enter "car", they would end up with the data from the other XML file. I've noticed so far that to load resources, you have to use the autogenerated "R" class, which restricts you to hard-coding resources at compile time.

• Drupal and Back-End Complexity

  Currently I am working on a school website, and we are still in the decision-making process of choosing a framework (we know that we're not using Joomla! or hand-coding). Drupal came up as a viable choice, and currently, that is my best bet for the site. However, I have an issue with CMS's in general. I would like to develop a quite complicated and specifically custom-suited back-end application for teachers to interact with individual students, including the design of shared/custom calendars, announcement privileges, etc. I currently have a bit of expertise with HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and I could wrap my head around some JavaScript and AJAX stuff if need-be. However, would such a complicated application work with Drupal (in that I could create it to specifically suite my purposes)?
