• Using db4o with multiple application instances under medium trust

  I recently stumbled over the object database engine db4o which I think looks really interesting. I would like to use it in an ASP.NET MVC application that will be deployed to a shared hosting environment under medium trust. Because of the trust level, I'm restricted to using db4o in embedded/in-process mode. That in itself should be no problem, but the hosting provider also transparently runs each web application in multiple (load-balanced) server instances with shared storage, which I would say is normally a very nice feature for a $10/month hoster. However, since an instance of a db4o server with write access (whether in-process or networked) locks the underlying database file, having multiple instances of the application using the same file won't work (or at least I can't see how it would). So the question is: is it possible to use db4o in this specific environment? I have considered letting each application have its own database which is synchronized with a master database using replication (dRS), but that approach will most likely end up with very frequent bi-directional replication (read master changes at beginning of each request, write to master after each change) which I don't think will be very efficient. Summary of the web application/environment characteristics: Read-intensive (but not entirely read-only) Some delay (a few seconds) is acceptible between the time that a change is made and the time when the change shows up in all the application instances' data Must run in medium trust No guarantee that the load-balancer uses "sticky sessions" All suggestions are much appreciated!

• Start or ensure that Delayed Job runs when an application/server restarts.

  Hi there, We have to use delayed_job (or some other background-job processor) to run jobs in the background, but we're not allowed to change the boot scripts/boot-levels on the server. This means that the daemon is not guaranteed to remain available if the provider restarts the server (since the daemon would have been started by a capistrano recipe that is only run once per deployment). Currently, the best way I can think of to ensure the delayed_job daemon is always running, is to add an initializer to our Rails application that checks if the daemon is running. If it's not running, then the initializer starts the daemon, otherwise, it just leaves it be. The question, therefore, is how do we detect that the Delayed_Job daemon is running from inside a script? (We should be able to start up a daemon fairly easily, bit I don't know how to detect if one is already active). Anyone have any ideas? • WF 4.0 can't get to resume workflow on the staging/production environment

  I have developed various registeration workflows using WF4.0. Each work flow has various bookmarks. I am using the registeration wf for an asp.net application. I tested the asp.net application locally and it is working fine( Starting WF, Persisting to db and resuming bookmarks). When I try to test it on the staging server, everything goes messy. • How do you host multiple public facing websites on a VPS?

  We host about 30 websites using typical shared hosting plans using ASP.NET and SQL 2000/2005/2008. I am now wondering about hosting all of these websites using our own virtual private server such as http://www.crystaltech.com/vps.aspx This is clearly cheaper but comes with a lot of questions I need answers to: Is the risk of having to keep this VPS server up and running worth it? Until now, the host provider has managed the server and we have not had to worry about crashes, downtime, software patches etc. We are not server administrators, we are programmers, so this is not really our expertise. On the other hand, it may not be hard to learn. When we make a website live, we log in to a domain management control panel and change the primary and secondary name servers to point to our shared web host: Eg ns1.sharedwebhost.com and ns2.sharedwebhost.com These name servers are going to have to change when we have a VPS. I don’t understand anything about how to set this up. Is there some useful info anyone could direct me to? Or is there software we need to install to make the primary and secondary name servers work on our VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting comes with DNS management like this: What software would I need to install to create this for each site we host at a VPS? The control panel we have for shared hosting also comes with a POP email interface that allows email addresses to be added easily: Is this something that can be easily set up at a VPS so clients can manage their own email addresses? Is there software we need to install to make this work?

• MS Chart in WPF, Setting the DataSource is not creating the Series

  Hi All, Here I am trying to assign the datasource (using same code given in the sample application) and create a graph, only difference is i am doing it in WPF WindowsFormsHost. due to some reason the datasource is not being assigned properly and i am not able to see the series ("Series 1") being created. wired thing is that it is working in the Windows Forms application but not in the WPF one. am i missing something and can somebody help me? • IIS 7 can't connect to SQLServer 2008

  Sorry if this is the most seen question on the web, but this is my turn. I am trying to publish my asp.net mvc app on IIS 7 under MS Sql Server 2008. I am on a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine. I get the following classical error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Under SQLServer, Allow remote connections is checked. My connection string is: Data Source=.\MSSQLSERVER;Initial Catalog=mydbname;User Id=sa;Password=mypassword I also tried with no username/password and "Integrated Security=true". There is only one instance of SQLServer installed. I tried to access my web page locally and remotely. There is no active firewall on the virtual machine. Thx for your help.

• LINQ-to-SQL: Could not find key member 'x' of key 'x' on type 'y'

  I am trying to connect my application to a SQLite database with LINQ-to-SQL, and so far everything has worked fine. The only hitch was that the SQLite provider I am using does not support code generation (unless I was doing something wrong), so I manually coded the 4 tables in the DB. The solution builds properly, but will not run, giving me the error message Could not find key member 'ItemType_Id' of key 'ItemType_Id' on type 'Item'. The key may be wrong or the field or property on 'Item' has changed names. I have checked and double checked spellings and field names on the database and in the attribute mappings, but could not find any problems. • Milliseconds in DateTime.Now on .NET Compact Framework always zero? [SOLVED]

  Hi all, i want to have a time stamp for logs on a Windows Mobile project. The accuracy must be in the range a hundred milliseconds at least. However my call to DateTime.Now returns a DateTime object with the Millisecond property set to zero. Also the Ticks property is rounded accordingly. How to get better time accuracy? Remember, that my code runs on on the Compact Framework, version 3.5. I use a HTC touch Pro 2 device. • The Date type and the Android database

  I understand that SQLite stores dates as long integers. When I read rows into a cursor using the standard method (i.e. using the query() method that reads data into a cursor), the result is a date string that includes the time. If I want a different format, I have to parse the string back into a date - possible, but a bit backwards. By using a ViewBinder (as suggested in this question), I can pretty much do anything I want, but the date is already a string at the time the method executes. The accepted answer to the above question also suggests that storing dates as longs would help avoid this problem. I don't want to do that, just in case I want to interpret my data with something else than this application. Maybe I want to expose it via a provider. Is there a way to handle this in the database adapter instead, i.e. controlling the date format that the cursor contains, so that I don't have to change the schema, and don't have to parse the default output back into a Date type?

• Gmail IMAP OAuth for desktop clients

  Recently Google announced that they are supporting OAUth for Gmail IMAP/SMTP. I browsed through their multiple documentations, but still I am confused about if they support OAuth for installed applications. 1. In this documentation they say: Note: Though the OAuth protocol supports the desktop/installed application use case, Google only supports OAuth for web applications. But they also have a document for OAuth for installed applications. 2. When I read the OAuth specification pointed by them, it says (in section 11.7): In many applications, the Consumer application will be under the control of potentially untrusted parties. For example, if the Consumer is a freely available desktop application, an attacker may be able to download a copy for analysis. In such cases, attackers will be able to recover the Consumer Secret used to authenticate the Consumer to the Service Provider. Also I think the disclaimer in point 1 above is about Google Data APIs, and surely IMAP/SMTP is not a part of them. I understand that for installed applications I can have a setup like: Have a small web-app at say example.com for my application. This web-app talks to Google gets the access token. The installed application talks to example.com only to get the access token. Installed application then talks to Google with the access token. I am now confused. Is this the only way?

• Having problems with uploading photos to TwitPic using OAuth in Objective C on the iPhone

  I have been working on an iPhone app that has a feature of uploading photos to TwitPic. I have it working with basic authentication. I am trying to get it working with OAuth. I am getting authentication errors. I have studied very carefully the TwitPic documentation. I am authorising the app by displaying a UI Web View and the it returns a PIN value. I enter the PIN value in the app and request the token. I am able to upload status updates to Twitter but not photos.   To begin I know about http://blog.kadirpekel.com/2009/11/09/facebook-connect-integration-with-spring-security/ The only problem is that it completely replaces the Form Login with Facebook Connect. I have the native form login in place, I also have Facebook Connect in place, Upon gathering user information I link it to a native account but without a password. At that point I would like to call a link or method to start process of going into the Spring Security Filter Chain. Here is the source code that works, but am trying to modify. It contains all the files I'm taking about. Now from what I understand I need to add a custom FacebookAuthenticationProvider so that my AuthenticationManager knows about it. <bean id="facebookAuthenticationProvider" class="org.springframework.security.facebook.FacebookAuthenticationProvider"> </bean> <security:authentication-manager alias="authenticationManager"> <security:authentication-provider ref="facebookAuthenticationProvider" /> </security:authentication-manager> Then within the FacebookAuthenticationProvider I would have to call an FacebookAuthenticationToken that would take my the current facebook Uid and SessionKey of the user. Then try authenticate this Token. So where does the FacebookAuthenticationFilter come into it? I'm just trying to understand the order at which these 3 files are called. As if you were trying to implement any other custom authentication. I have tried: Firing a collection modified event after assigning it to chart.dataProvider calling invalidateDisplayList (tried with all components) binding the chart data provider to a variable, and doing the above. changing the view state on the last line of resultHandler. None of them worked. When I fetch the data and cache it locally, then use it to call init synchronously, the chart displays correctly. What am I missing here?

• Flex 3 Value aware combo box error

  I am using a value aware combobox, it was working fine, but recently i started getting the below error, when I try to click on combobox, and the error is random. I am not sure of it is because of any changes i have done in the coding, or some changes in data provider etc any help is appreciated... • MSWord automation:Get file contents after it was saved

  I have an application that uses MSWord automation to edit some documents, after they save and close word I need to grab the modified file and put it back on the repository, there is only one scenario where I can't get it to work and that is when the user makes changes to the file, selects to close word and selects yes to save the file there are 2 events that I'm using: DocumentBeforeSave Quit on the Quit event I'm trying to load the .docx file from disk but on this particular scenario I get an IOException because the file is still in use, somehow I need to wait until after the Quit event has been processed, which is when Word is actually closed and the file is no longer being used right now I have it working using this word.Visible = true; while (!wordDone) { //gets changed to true on the Quit event System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(100); } bool error = false; do { try { //need to load the contents of the modified file ls.Content = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(provider.GetFileName()); error = false; } catch (System.IO.IOException) { error = true; System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(200); } } while (error); while this works it is very ugly, I need a way to fire an event after the Quit event has been handled, or block the current thread while word is still running, or get an event after the document has been saved, the bottom line is I need a clean way to load the file after it has been saved and word is closed. DocumentAfterSave would be awesome, but doesn't seem to exist. I Also tried unhooking the Quit handler and calling word.Quit on the Quit handler, that made no difference

• Amazon ELB CNAME record not working

  Hi there, I have set up my EC2 infrastructure behind an ELB instance and by using the ELBs DNS name everything works as expected. Now i wanted to forward a subdomain of my main project domain to the ELBs DNS Name with a CNAME entry. I did this about 12 hours ago and it doesnt seem to work, and i dont know why. The subdomain just cant be resolved. This is the DNS entry which was processed from my DNS provider without errors yesterday: @ IN A 111.111.111.111 localhost IN A 127.0.0.1 mail IN A 111.111.111.111 www IN A 111.111.111.111 ftp IN CNAME www beta IN CNAME myelbnamehere.eu-west-1.elb.amazonaws.com imap IN CNAME www loopback IN CNAME localhost pop IN CNAME www relay IN CNAME www smtp IN CNAME www @ IN MX 10 mail Using nslookup, all the subdomains and main domain gets looked up correctly, but beta.domain.com doesnt. I get "** server can't find beta.domain.com: NXDOMAIN" What am i doing wrong ? Do i need to wait longer ? When i use the ELB DNS name directly everything works as expected. When i do an NSlookup on my providers DNS Server, the CNAME gets resolved, but it looks like any other DNS server cant find the subdomain thanks in advance

• Subversive Connector Discovery error

  Trying to install Subversive for the first time. Successfully installed Subversive "Team Provider" via the Available Sites dialog in Help Install New Software. Added a site that points to the Helios Update Site. Restarted Eclipse and tried to open the SVN Repository Browser and it automatically launched a Subversive Connector Discovery dialog, presenting me with 6 or 7 connectors to choose from. I've tried every single one, and they all fail, stating that an "error occured" and that I need to check the "error log" (Eclipse error log?) for details. I then exited the dialog and noticed that I can now view all the SVN-related perspective panes. (1) Was it alright for me to cancel that Connector Discovery process, or will I need that to create/edit repositories locally? If I need it, what was going wrong and does anyone have any ideas for how to get it working? (2) I'm trying to undertand the SVN Repositories feature for creating a new repository. How do I point it to my local SVN server instance? The default is to query me for a URL that I assume I would point to one of those "publicly available" repos.... which I don't want! • ADODB Connection String: Workgroup Information file is Missing?

  I have a few data sources in access that I need to connect to programatically to do things with behind the scenes and keep visibility away from users. Said datasource has a password 'pass' as I'm going to call it here. Using this connection method I get an error attempting to use the open method Dim conn as ADODB.Connection Set ROBBERS.conn = New ADODB.Connection conn.open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" _ & "Data Source=\\pep-home\projects\billing\autobilling\DPBilling2.mdb;" _ & "Jet OLEDB:Database Password=pass;", "admin", "pass" "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user." Due to planning to move into 2007, we are not using nor have ever used a workgroup identification file through access. The database password on the data source was set through the Set Databa Password which had to be done on an exclusive open. Ive spent a good while changing around my connection options, where to put the passwords etc and either cannot find the right format, or (why I'm asking here) I think there may be some other unknown that I must setup to do this. Anyone out there got some useful information?

• Import Excel 2007 into SQL 2000 using Classic ASP and ADO

  I have the following code from a legacy app which currently reads from an excel 2003 spreadsheet on a server, but I need this to run from my machine which uses excel 2007. When I debug on my machine ADO does not seem to be reading the spreadsheet. I have checked all file paths etc. and location of spreadsheet that is all fine. I've heard that you cannot use the jet db engine for excel 2007 anymore? Can someone confirm this? What do I need to do to get this to work?
