• Screen Casting using ffmpeg (too fast)

  I can use ffmpeg to make screen casts: ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1280x800 -i :0.0 -c:v libx264 -framerate 30 -r 30 -crf 18 out.mkv However the output comes out to be too fast paced. It also happens with GTK RecordMyDesktop if I enable the encode on the fly. So, the questions is how to get a normal video pace. Also in order to capture the sound with ffmpeg what option should be used? • How do I maximize a window in one monitor and do other things on the other monitor

  Hi, I have windows 7 installed on my laptop which is a Dell studio XPS 16. I recently set up a second monitor for it. I've noticed that when I load up "full maximisation" applications (I don't know the term) like a game or media center on one monitor, I can't seem to do anything with the other monitor. With the game, I can see the other monitor, I can play a movie on it even, but if I click the mouse button on it, it'll stop the game and alt-tab away. In Media Center, I can't even cross my mouse over the other monitor. So my question is, in Windows 7, is it possible to run programs like this that are designed to be run in one maximised window and still be able to do things on the other window?

• Red Hat 5.4 slow processing

  I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt). I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller. any idea what could be the reason of this slowness?

• How to resize the disk of a Fedora guest VM in VMWare ESXi

  How do I resize (specifically increase) the disk size of a Fedora guest VM running under VMWare ESXi 4.1? I have a Fedora 16 VM with an ext4 formatted disk, and I've increased its disk size using the vSphere client from 50GB to about 250GB. I rebooted the guest, and it correctly shows this size using fdisk -l /dev/sda. However, df -H still shows the old size. I've found a few KB articles explaining how to resize partitions for some flavors of Linux, but nothing for Fedora with ext4. That article seems to imply I have to create a completely new partition, and that I can't simply expand the existing partition. Using Gparted, it also prevents me from simply resizing the existing partition. Is this impossible to do under Linux?

• Using PCIe and onboard together

  I'm currently using my PCI Express card to run 2 monitors and my onboard to run another. It works fine despite people saying it won't. I use a gadget to monitor my PCI card but would also like to monitor my onboard GPU as well. I play a game called Eve Online and when I'm running my accts I can only get 20 fps. Before, when I was using just my PCI card, I was getting 60+. To solve this, I set the display options to interval immediate, it was set to one before. My computer handles it no problem at all, but I was always told this was immpossible. I was hoping someone could explain how and why this is working. Thanks!   Hi all, I Have a macro containing a line that will change the formula of a cell using R1C1 formula type. The formula is: ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _ "=IF(R[0]C[-2]=0,"",(R[0]C[-20]-R[0]C[-16]))" When ever I attempt to run the macro it always comes up with a dialog box saying Run-time error '1004': Application-defined or object-defined error. And when you click debug it highlights those 2 lines in the macro. And I can't figure out how to fix it. Can anyone help?

• free Raw-File Converter/Editor

  I have RAW files output by a program with a specific set of properties (Photoshop RAW, 16 bits, IBM PC byte order, no header, 1 non-interleaved channel, variable sizes like 257X257 or 129X513); does anyone know of a free tool that will allow me to convert to and from this format, and possibly do basic editing (selection, copy/paste, rotation of selection)? I've tried Picasa, XNView, and Paint Shop Pro 7 and none of them work properly. The closest i get is Paint Shop Pro which will at least make a serviceable attempt to open these files but i can't set all of the proper settings. XNView just might be able to edit it if i can figure out how to change the open settings for a particular raw file. So my questions at current are: how do i tell XNView to open a raw file a particular way? Failing that, is there any free tool that can open Photoshop-RAW files with the above settings (that's not photoshop)? If it helps, i'm trying to import/export/edit hieghtmap data for maps for Supreme Commander.

• .VBS scripts have stopped running... No idea why!

  We have two .vbs scripts that are run by our Task Scheduler that have suddenly stopped working for no reason we can fathom. We haven't significantly altered our system configuration in the last 24 hours, and the scripts have run without a hitch for months. According to the Task Scheduler the scripts just keep running and never stop, which is never the case. I stopped all running versions through the Scheduler and manually attempted to run one of the .vbs scripts. I got the following error message: Line: 15 Error: The system cannot locate the resource specified. Code: 800C0005 Source: msxml3.dll Line 15 (or 16 to be more accurate - line 15 itself is blank, but so is line 1) is: xml.Send Would could have suddenly caused this? • Can I get redundancy with a JBOD storage subsystem

  I have a Promise Technology J610S. This is a JBOD subsystem. Is it possible for me to buy a SAS hardware RAID controller and provide some type of redundancy for these drives? I am unsure whether I will use Linux or Windows yet so an answer with enumeration for both would be highly appreciated. One solution that I thought of was: if my J610s can export each drive as a target, my server will simply see 16 drives. The RAID controller can then perform the RAID5/RAID6 if I want.

• How to Configure Different Gateways for Different VLANs

  I have around 10 VLANs, and two different internet gateways. I want traffic on some VLANs to use one gateway, and traffic on other VLANs to use another gateway. (e.g. I wish to route server traffic via one gateway and desktop internet traffic down another). Is it possible to configure different default routes for different VLANs on a Dell 6224 switch? Or is their a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve? The core switch I am using is a Dell PowerConnect 6224 switch. Currently I'm using: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.58.3.16 which creates the default gateway for all VLANs. I did consider adding multiple routes with equal metric, and setting ACLs between the VLANs to deny access to the 'wrong' gateway, but that idea just doesn't feel right to me.

• Request Multiple Maya Floating Server Licenses for extra Satellite clients

  Hello all: I am currently setting up a 'render farm' for Maya 2008 Unlimited. One Maya workstation license comes with the ability to render on eight satellite nodes. It works perfect, the remote rendering works like a charm. However, we have additional boxes to set up as satellite rendering nodes, and we have extra Maya workstation licenses. Ideally, the workstation can take two licenses and thus render on 16 nodes, but I haven't been able to figure it out, or determine if it is actually possible. It's a big project, where rendering the entire thing is in the scope of weeks, so the speed up would be worth it. Any thoughts?

  I work remotely on my work computer. I am also the root of the workstation that I am sharing with my colleague. Yesterday, I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.31-17 when asked by the update manager but refrained from restarting because I knew my NVIDIA and several other kernel modules wouldn't work. Unfortunately my colleague who is a linux noob restarted the machine and here I am :( I am thinking of changing the symlinks /initrd.img and /vmlinuz to the previous kernel image and use kexec. Please tell some better way to load the 2.6.31-16 release of kernel from ssh and not the grub boot menu. I am using Ubuntu Karmic.

  I have a Dell Inspiron 14r (N4110) with an Intel Core i3 and 4gb of ram. It runs very smoothly, however gaming on this laptop is very limited. This is mostly because of integrated graphics but i have seen a computer with a Core i5, and very similar specs otherwise, run games that the N4110 cannot. This other computer has integrated graphics and 6gb of ram. I am wondering whether upgrading ram or upgrading the processor make the most difference in performance. Which setup would get better performance, an i5 with 4gb of ram or an i3 with 8 gb of ram? (Both with integrated graphics) Also, is there a certain point at which you have too much ram for the computer to ever possibly use? For instance is there really any difference in performance between 8 gb and 16 gb of ram?

• Weird RAM Upgrade Experience

  I have a laptop, HP EliteBook 8540p having originally 4GB RAM and I've recently bought Corsair Value Select SO-DIMM 16 Go (2x 8 Go) DDR3 1333 MHz. It fits the required RAM specifications perfectly, and once I've inserted them, the BIOS recognizes the memory correctly, but my linux Gentoo running on kernel 3.1.6 SMP x86_64 crashes immediately when I'm running an app which consumes a lot of memory. The laptop crashes as if there's no more battery left, when the memory reaches at least 6000MB ram. Windows 7 doesn't want to run anymore, it shows a blue screen with the IRQ LESS OR EQUAL error if I set 8GB, and it doesn't boot at all if I set 16GB. Is there something I could do to fix this please ?

  I am running OpenBSD on a network appliance hardware. It has 5 NICs. I want to give different IP's in same subnet to 3 nics. Eg: em0: 192.168.1.5 em1: 192.168.1.90 em2: 192.168.1.56 I make the necessary configuration with ifconfig, all interfaces works as expected when all the ethernet ports are plugged in to switch. But there is something wrong in routing. If I connect to 192.16.1.5 via any service(http, smtp etc.), traffic goes over link#3. If I unpug the cable from em2 I can't reach any IP's binded on device. Is there any way to route traffic over different links in this IP configuration?

  Is there a program that would dump the complete structure of ID3v2 tags? Not just the frame names and values, but full information such as frame order, text encoding, description encoding (for TXXX frames), presence of unsynchronization, presence of multiple tags... Background: I'm rather curious why some files are incompatible with some programs. For example, some ID3v2.4 tags written by foobar2000 are not read by Winamp; editing with Mutagen fixes them but editing with foobar2000 breaks again. It's not the version or data encoding – most other v2.4 UTF-16 tags work fine... However, if I use foobar2000 to convert the tags to v2.3, then back to v2.4, they start working fine in Winamp – this last bit just does not make any sense. Edit: Linux or/and Windows.

  Now, for a number of reasons I need to ping several hosts on a regular basis for a dashboard display. • Ultra-lightweight web browser?

  Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript.
