• Should I ditch AJAX in client side web development when I've got a web-socket open?

  I was thinking that maybe I should forget AJAX (HTTP) requests when I've got a web-socket open between client and server, but I decided I should ask here to check if this could be a bad practice for some reason that I'm not thinking of. Once the socket is open, there's less syntax (often meaning simpler error handling) involved in passing information between client and server with Socket.io (just one example of a web-socket). Is there some obvious situation where a web-socket (Socket.io for example) isn't going to be capable of handling a functionality that an AJAX request could do easily?

• Tor and Google Analytics - how to track?

  I make a lot of use of Google Analytics - Google has reasonable tracking for location of users so I can tell where users come from. I know it is not 100% but it gives an idea. In the wake of Prism it is possible that more people will make use of networks such as tor for anonymous browsing. I have no problem with this, people can wear tin foil hats while browsing my site for all I care, but it will lead to more erroneous stats. Is there any way to flag traffic as coming from TOR, so I can filter location reports not to include it, and to get an idea of the percentage of traffic which does use it? Has anyone actually tried this?

• Assign subdomains to separate ports on web server

  I have set up an Abyss web server as a little experiment, and I want to know if it is possible to assign subdomains to different ports on the machine the web server is running on. I have a couple webUIs that I'd like to assign subdomains: 192.168.1.1:8000 becomes example.com/webui1/ 192.168.1.1:8001 becomes example.com/webui2/ The webUIs are available by accessing their ports via example.com:8000. I have tried using a reverse proxy, but it seems that this is only usable on one internal IP at a time. What other options do I have? Answer is good, but my current set up doesn't meet the requirements. Abyss Web Server X2 is required to use Virtual Hosts with Abyss.

• 12.10 unable to connect to the Internet using Chrome or Firefox

  I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• Are there efforts to build a collaboratively edited HTML/JS/DOM reference?

  W3Schools has a reputation of being incomplete, sometimes incorrect, and ridden with advertising; still, when looking to look up some things or link to documentation when answering a SO question, it still is the only handy cross-browser resource. There are other resources like the Mozilla Developer Network that is doing an increasingly great job documenting JavaScript, and the legendary and great Quirksmode. But they, as brilliant as they are, cover only parts of the areas I am talking about, and provide no community editing and quality control options. Is anybody aware of efforts to create a collaboratively edited, cross-browser HTML/CSS/JavaScript/DOM encyclopedia? If you will, I'm thinking of a challenger to W3Schools like SO was to Experts Exchange. (I thought this more suitable on Programmers than on SO proper - please correct me if I'm wrong.)

• Passing Parameters Between Web-Services and JSF Pages

  This is another quick demo that shows a common scenario that combines several demos I did in the past. The scenario – we have two web services, one returns a list of objects, the other allows us to update an object. We want to build a page flow where the first page shows us the list of objects, allows us to select one, and then we can edit that instance in the next page and call the second web service to update our data source. The demo shows: How to select a row and save the object value in a pageFlowScope. (using setPropertyListener). • Packaging a web application for deploying at customer site

  I want to develop a django webapp that would get deployed at the customer site. The web app would run in a private cloud environment (ESX server here) of the customer. My web app would use a mysql database. The problem is I would not have direct access/control of the webapp. My question is, how to package such a web application with it's database and other entities so that it's easier to upgrade/update the app and it's database in future. Right now the idea I have is that I would provide a vm with the django app and database setup. The customer can just start the vm and he would have the webapp running. What are the other options I should consider?

• Is QTWebKit still being actively developed? [closed]

  I am considering recommending PhantomJS/CasperJS for a project, to provide continuous integration testing. Unfortunately those testing frameworks are based on QTWebKit, and it does not appear that there has been much activity on QTWebKit since September of 2011. It seems this is because of Nokia's financial troubles. QT has since been sold to Digia in August of this year, and can be found on qt.digia.com. It is not apparent whether QTWebKit will be actively developed. Before putting the effort into developing a PhantomJS/CasperJS testing framework, I would like to know whether the underlying QTWebKit framework is probably going to continue to be actively developed (or, alternatively, could be easily substituted with an alternative). I would suspect that since Digia just acquired QT it is a little too soon to tell what direction they will take the project. I would be interested in thoughts and comments on this issue.

  I always hear that PHP is for medium and small websites whereas .NET and Java for enterprise applications. My question is about PHP. Why is PHP not a good option for enterprise web applications? Is it because if the web application becomes bigger then PHP will be slower as it is an interpreted language? I know that corporate world will choose .NET or J2EE because of the integration with their products and because of back end services, etc. However, if we just have PHP for building sites and web applications then how can we use it to perform well with big sites? In short, Is there a relationship between the performance of PHP and the size of the website? What are the factors that make PHP not appropriate option for big sites?

• Midori displays mobile sites.

  I've installed Midori to work in an Elementary mockup. Midori works just fine, but, on a few domains, it opens mobile websites instead of the regular pages. A of now, this happens with gmail.com, facebook.com, paginegialle.it, and others; yet other websites which do have a mobile version, as gazzetta.it, show the regular version. I couldn't find a solution through settings and I didn't find any mention of this problem on forums or else, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Code to simulate a users actions, such as logging in

  I've recently begun working on a PHP application, replacing another developer. I believed the application was using an API to communicate with a remote service but when I looked through the code I found that it was using a set of functions to actually log in, fill out forms and submit them as a user might do in a browser. My intention is to replace this code, to use the services API instead. I've considered leaving the code as is and not replace it. It makes me wonder though is this a common practice in the software industry? To have a programme simulate a users actions in a browser to perform a set of actions? It feels to me that this is clever but poor programming, Have any other developers seen this?

I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding?   I am not sure if this question is considered too broad, but I would like to reach out to my fellow programmers to see what alternatives are out there for saving data using jquery. I have a content management system that generates an set of HTML pages called an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual). The HTML pages are written in HTML and uses jquery. The ITEM is meant to be light weight, portable and run on most modern browsers. I am looking for a way to save data. I have considered cookies and sqlite.   This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations.   I'd like to create a web wizard or a wizard on/within a website. I know there are several java frameworks for wizards but there is none for the web in particular. If I search for a framework, I always get wizards to create a website, applet, servlet and what not. But never how to create such a wizard itself. So the question(s) is: What framework should I use to create a web wizard? And what frameworks are there? The wizard will be the visualisation for a BPEL Process deployment on a apache ode. • Evidence for automatic browsing - Log file analysis

  I'm analyzing web server logs both in Apache and IIS log formats. I want to find the evidence for automatic browsing, like web robots, spiders, bots, etc. I used python robot-detection 0.2.8 for detecting robots in my log files, but I know there may be other robots (automatic programs) which have traversed through the web site but robot-detection can not identify. So I want to ask: Are there any specific clues that can be found in log files that human users do not leave but automated software would? Do they follow a specific navigation pattern? I saw some requests for favicon.ico - does this implicate that it is a automatic browsing?. I found this article and this question with some valuable points.

• How do I install Java?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I recently installed openjdk-jre6 because one of the websites I use requires java for me to log in. Unfortunately, even after installing openjdk-jre6, I am not able to use the website. In place of 2 text boxes where I am supposed to enter my username and password, it simply shows a message "click here to download plugin". I am using Firefox by the way. I even tried to install java by clicking on that message. But it says "Java Runtime Environment not available". And then gives me a button to install java manually. But I would rather install it from the repo's. Could someone please tell me, what I should do to get Firefox to take note of the openjdk-jre6 that I have already installed?
