  When I try to run something with wine, nothing happens! I have many had problems with Ubuntu so I have tried to get Windows 8 back on the computer, but because Ubuntu can't run exe files I can't open the installer. Furthermore my computer can't boot from a CD/DVD anymore after I installed Ubuntu, it turns up with a black screen with a blinking marker at the upper left corner of the screen and after 10 minutes it says something like Can't boot from the selected media device - select another How do I get Windows back?

• Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

  I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

• Ubuntu Won't Install On Custom Build

  just built my first computer, trying to install Ubuntu, when I tell my BIOS to startup from disk drive it says "Please insert boot media into boot device" so I insert my burned disc and my computer thinks for a few seconds and then prompts me again. Any idea why? Tried multiple times, burned two discs, I have even confirmed that my build works by swapping hard drives with the computer I'm currently using to post this, so I'm kinda out of answers right now and hoping you guys can help me find something I've done wrong, thanks in advance for any help.

• Why is iTunes using so much data?

  I've been told by my ISP I'm using too much bandwidth so after using Activity Monitor to see that I'm using ~2GB a day I've used the nettop command line utility to work out where. Turns out it's iTunes. I don't use it for downloading/streaming music (other than podcasts of which I definitely don't have 2GB of new ones a day) or movies. What is iTunes doing? This is on a late 2009 MacBook running Lion 10.7.5 with iTunes version 10.7

  With Windows 8 Storage Spaces, you can lump many hard disks of varying types, speeds and sizes together to use as a single storage space / logical drive. How does Windows decide what to place where? For example will it move files about depending on frequency of access? Maybe splitting files frequently accessed together between hard disks etc. What does it optimize for? Speed, reliability, etc? If the above is asking too much, can I easily see where the files are physically (on which physical disk)?

• Citrix has issues resolving network shares

  We are having this weird issue with our Citrix (version 4.5) server (sitting on Windows 2003 r2), where a couple users have issues resolving single shared network drive. We use a logon script to map all shared drives. The weird part is that of 3 shared drives, users can access 2, but the 3rd one goes to the old server (even though the logon script points to the new server). And that issues is limited to a few users. I had them log off and re-loggin to no success. It happens just in Citrix. The file server, that is being accessed, is Windows 2008 R2. Like I said we use a logon script to map the network drive. I understand I might be a little confusing, I will gladly reword the post.

  Mac OSX - Snow leopard is host OS and Ubuntu-10.1 and windows xp are guest OS. I recently updated vittualbox to 4.1.10 Ubuntu did not boot immediately, it did an entire system scan and took about 2 hrs to boot. Now it boots regularly but it does not find wireless internet connection, even connecting cable does not help. However internet works great in window xp.   I'm looking for some best practice advice on enumerations and retrieving an associated string value. Given this: public enum SerialKillers { TedBundy, EdGein, AlbertFish, GeorgeBush } What is the best way to get a related string value of the name? Eg. "Ted Bundy", given that the string value may not match the representation in the enumeration. eg "George W Bush" My current thinking is function accepting an enum and returning a string, but would that not mean hard coding the string values (which I prefer not to do)? Is using a resources file where the string can be retrieved via the enumeration too heavy handed? Should I accept the fact I am going to Hell for victimising Ted Bundy by associating him with George Bush?

  I've been thinking about using Markov techniques to restore missing information to natural language text. Restore mixed case to text in all caps Restore accents / diacritics to languages which should have them but have been converted to plain ASCII Convert rough phonetic transcriptions back into native alphabets That seems to be in order of least difficult to most difficult. Basically the problem is resolving ambiguities based on context. I can use Wiktionary as a dictionary and Wikipedia as a corpus using n-grams and Markov chains to resolve the ambiguities. Am I on the right track? Are there already some services, libraries, or tools for this sort of thing? • Ubuntu 10.04 preseed unattended install results in faulty partition table

  I'm currently trying to set up an unattended installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) through preseeding. But whenever I try to create a custom partition scheme, the Debian installer (which Ubuntu is using) produces a faulty partition table.   Hello. I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting yum install e4fsprogs tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2 nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4 uname -a mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.img 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 Rebooted. I expected fsck to start automatically as said on some site. But it did not. Threw some error (don't remember exactly which). Ok, I booted linux rescue and executed fsck: fsck -t ext4 -fy /dev/md2 Partition went fine. But still when I boot main system, it says in log: "ext3-fs:" then something about not being able to mount ext3 partition due to unknown extended attributed (200). I booted linux rescue again. It loads fine and correctly determines all my machine partitions both ext3 (boot) and ext4 (/) under /mnt/sysimage just fine. I retried mkinitrd thing again watching it's output and ensured ext4 module is included into the system. I also edited menu.lst grub file to include rootfstype=ext4 kernel parameter. Bad luck. I still have message from ext3-fs about not being able to mount filesystem because of attributes and kernel panic immediately after. I checked /etc/fstab - it's fine and saying that root is of ext4. What did I do wrong? This machine is empty so I can just reformat it with 5.5 and recreate partitions to be originally ext4. But... I just want to know what did I do wrong.

• How to update the hard disk device drivers for a ghosted hard drive image so it can run on different hardware: Ultra ATA > SATA

  I've ghosted a Winxp machine from one laptop with Ultra ATA drive, and would like to set it up on another laptop as a multiboot option on another hard driver with a SATA drive. I can install the partition fine but if i make it active and try to boot it it blue screens. The blue screen is so fast i cant even read it, other than to make out it's saying "something", im picking probably hard drive as it goes through POST fine. So basically i would like to boot into my Win7 OS, and then somehow manipulate the XP partition to use updated drivers for the new hard drive/laptop so that i can then at least boot into the XP OS on the new machine and update all the other drivers in safe mode or whatever to get it to run. I assume someone is going to tell me to just do a fresh install, but that kinda defeats the purpose of ghosting at this point. There is a significant amount of personalisation, development setup on the XP machine that i would like to just transfer as is. As it stands ive invested minmal time in getting it to run, just a ghost and recovery and then a blue screen boot or two, so its still well worth it to me, time wise to try this way. Thanks.

• OS X can't copy files from Windows Home Server...over wifi.

  I'm a brand spanking new user of OS X, coming from a lifetime of Windows use. I've been setting up my new Macbook Pro and have run into a very unusual problem. Over wifi, I am unable to copy files to or from my Windows Home Server. The problem seems to exist only over wifi, and only to WHS. Here are the details of my setup: 2010 Macbook Pro (Core i7), OS X 10.6.3 Windows Home Server PP3 (virtualized in XenServer 5.5) Windows 7 Ultimate x64 desktop Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in Boot Camp D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router Here is what I've done to narrow down the problem: Files copy fine from WHS to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files fail to copy from WHS to OS X when using wifi (error -51) Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using wifi Files copy fine from WHS to Boot Camp when using wifi Files copy fine from desktop to Boot Camp when using wifi From what I can tell, it seems to be some sort of issue between OS X and WHS, but I can't for the life of me see what would be different between shares on WHS and my desktop. They are both connected using smb://ADDRESS (I've tried both by IP and name). I can browse the shares on the WHS, but copying to OS X fails. I originally found the issue while installing VS2010 off an ISO from WHS, mounted to a Windows 7 VM using VMware Fusion. During the installation the VM was unusable - even the clock got behind the host be about 8 minutes. Once I plugged in the ethernet and disabled the wifi things picked up and finished quickly. The Fusion 3.1 RC is the only I think of that I installed that may have messed with the wifi driver. I've also tried resetting the wifi router, and have changed it from being G & N to N-only. Under Boot Camp I get similar speeds as my wife's N laptop. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Windows XP Installation problems

  I'm having trouble installing Windows XP on a computer... My friend gave me her old computer, it was riddled with viruses and ran extremely slow. I did my best to clean it out, and after a bit I discovered it had a boot sector virus. So I downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD (installed it on a flash drive), and ran Darik's nuke and boot to completely wipe the hard drive. I then tried to reinstall Windows XP from a USB drive... It doesn't work. The computer just stalls and never boots. The computers dvd drive doesn't work, so I borrowed a spare drive that another friend had, and tried to run a Windows XP cd. For a bit I got the stop 7B error, but now it just stalls like the USB drive does. Since then I've booted back into the Ultimate Boot CD, and ran partition magic. Repartitioned the Hard Drive, and copied the files on the Windows cd to the hard drive. I was wondering if there is any way I can make it run the setup.exe off the hard drive. I have the UBCD at my disposal, but have yet to come up with a way to do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• USB Mouse and Keyboard not working in Linux 4 Tegra

  I am a new person in Tegra Linux development. I have Tamontem NG Evaluation board with Tegra 3 Chip. I installed L4T sample file system from NVIDIA tegra Resources (https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra) and installed the file system as described in the documentation provided in NVIDIA site. Already these was an SD card with L4T running. i dont want to change the boot loader. So I copied the boot.scr.uimg to root (/) folder and uImage to boot(/boot/) and it starts booting from the existing SD card. After that while booting, some errors occurred in some Bluetooth devices (there is no bluetooth device in the board). So I disabled Bluetooth by giving the following command sudo mv /etc/init/bluetooth.conf /etc/init/bluetooth.conf.noexec Now the problem is that mouse and keyboard are not working. So i cannot login. Even though i installed desktop, the mouse and keyboard are not working. But mouse and keyboard are enumerating. lsusb command is showing the USB mouse and keyboard. The installed file system is Ubuntu 13.04. Linux Kernel version is 3.1 What to do. Please help.Thanks in Advance.

• Windows xp recovery console without Ntfs.sys? (0x00000024 BSOD)

  I have two physical disks in a computer, for simlicity lets call them C and D. C: got Windows XP and D: got some data. The problem is that whenever i have D: connected i can't boot windows. I get some BSOD called 0x00000024/NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. Same thing if i boot up windows with D: disconnected and then connect it once windows has loaded. The KB article about this problem says that i have to run chkdsk but i can't get to somewhere where i can run this because i get a BSOD whenever the disk is connected! Even the recovery-console BSODs if D: is connected. The final option in the KB is to boot the computer on Windows 2000 Setup disks where you edit some file to manually disable the ntfs.sys driver and then run chkdsk. The problem is that i don't have any floppy drive. Is there any way to boot the built in recovery console with ntfs.sys disabled or to burn the floppy version to a cd after you've extracted and modified it on the harddrive? • Move an existing RAID 5 array from Ubuntu to Gentoo

  I have a 64-bit Ubuntu machine with a 4-disk RAID 5 using software raid (md). I've been able to boot an Ubuntu LiveCD and recognize the array with a simple mdadm -A /dev/md0. It was easy to mount after that and nothing had to rebuild. I'm installing Gentoo on this box now (multi-boot, non-RAID root partition) and I have md auto-detect turned on in the kernel. When I boot Gentoo I get: "invalid superblock magic on sdd" for each of the drives in the array. I boot back to Ubuntu and they mount no problem. I tried copying the mdadm.conf that works in Ubuntu to Gentoo, and then ran mdadm -A /dev/md0 but it reports that there is no array named md0. I don't want to lose data (obviously) and I don't want to have to let the RAID rebuild every time I switch between OSes. Any help is appreciated. Both are using mdadm 3.1.4 Both are running 64-bit kernels. mdadm -D /dev/md0 from Ubuntu yields: http://pastebin.com/5gj2QNkV UPDATE: After rebooting I noticed that it still complains about invalid blocks, but cat /proc/mdstat shows an inactive /dev/md127 with the same disks as my raid. • How to repair Mac OS X without reinstalling?

  I have an Intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my PC. It's running fine. After that I thought about installing Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and booted it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that the Mac was there so I booted that into safe mode and Mac OS X runs. After that I installed iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, Xcode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way I can repair my Mac OS X without reinstalling? I have also been unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK.
