• Memory footprint of a parsed XML file in Classic ASP?

  Anyone know of a way to find out the amount of memory/size of a XMLDocument once it has parsed a XML file? I've been doing "beer mat" calculations so far but have been asked to come up with some more legit numbers through monitoring some how. I need to create about 1500 XML files (via FreeThreadedXMl-DOM object), which verge between 3-9K in size and store them in Application vars but our SysAdmin is worried about us gobbling up too much memory. Other than the crude method of booting up a fresh IIS instance and then loading everything in and monitoring before and after memory usage in Task Manager I can't think of a way of doing it with a bit more accuracy.

• ASP.Net MVC 404 errors when route contains an .svc extension

  I have an ASP.Net MVC 2 site set up under IIS7 using the integrated pipeline with the following route: routes.MapRoute( "MyRoute", "mycontroller/{name}/{*path}", new { controller = "MyController", action = "Index", path = UrlParameter.Optional } ); There are no other routes above this route, but whenever I try and access the above route with a path value that has an .svc extension, for example: http://localhost/MyVirtualDirectory/mycontroller/test/somepath.svc ASP.Net returns a 404 error without executing my controller (I have a log message call at the start of the action method). If I change the extension to something benign (like .txt) it works perfectly, so seems that somewhere along the line ASP.Net is interpreting the request as a standard ASP.Net call to a web service that doesn't exist - this is definitely an ASP.Net 404 response (not an IIS response). What could be causing this, and how do I stop it from happening?

  i have published asp.net mvc application on iis 6 on the server(windows server 2003) from local machine. On server i have set the default page to default.aspx. but when i try to browse the site on server, it gives me exception "The incoming request does not match any route" One thing i noticed is that.   I have a basic Silverlight 4 project called "MySLApp" which has the associated MySLApp.Web project. (names changed for simplicity) It compiles down into these files (in the silverlight project): AppManifest.xaml MySLApp.dll MySLApp.xap MySLAppTestPage.html And the Web project builds into: Bin\MySLApp.Web.dll ClientBin\MySLApp.xap What I also have in my Web project is a .ASHX file that serves up a generated image, which my Silverlight application calls out to as the URL of an image: var uri = new Uri(@"http://localhost:1122/ImageServer.ashx", UriKind.Absolute); var bi = new BitmapImage(uri); TagImage.Source = bi; My big question boils down to this: How do I deploy my app to my IIS server?   I've been trying to figure out how to write this regular expression. It is to be used for ISAPI_Rewrite, a module for IIS 6, for doing URL rewriting. I want the url /hg/<parameter> to be mathed, so it can be rewrited to /hg/hgwebdir.cgi/<parameter>. I've matched it using ^/hg/(.*). My problem is, if the URL /hg/hgwebdir.cgi/<parameter> is used, the regex should NOT match. Using the above regex with this URL, will rewrite to /hg/hgwebdig.cgi/hgwebdig.cgi/<parameter> which is not correct. Can you help me create the matching pattern?

• Is it possible to configure a location in Web.config to only allow local connections

  Hi All, I've got a page in an ASP.Net app (its Mvc actually but not important) and I would like to only allow connections to this page from the local machine. I would love to do something like this in Web.config: <location path="resources"><system.web><authorization><allow ips="local"/></authorization></system.web></location> I know this is possible with a simple check in the page code behind (or controller) and its even possible just with IIS configuration but I would love a Web.config config as this would be the most elegant solution in my opinion. • Why is "use custom server" option disabled in Visual studio 2010?

  I have DotnetNuke loaded in Visual studio 2010. The 'use custom server' option under 'Start Options' is disabled. Why is it disabled? What does 'Use Default Web server' default to? How do I change what the default is? In earlier versions of VS i was able to switch between IIS and the internal web server (Cassini). Now it's more confusing in VS 2010! Would the project type, Web Application Project vs Web Site project, affect the setting?

  I can run my Asp.Net MVC 2 application without an issue on my local computer. Just Run / Debug. But if I have already built it, I can't publish it! I have to clean the solution and publish it again. I know this is not system critical, but it's really annoying. "One Click Publish" is not "Clean solution and then One click publish" The exact error is as follows: Error 11 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. I suspect it's something to do with the Web.Config in the Views folder, but then why only after I build once previously. And just to note, the app works fine once published.

• Storing links to internal content pages in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm using a route like this routes.MapRoute( "PageBySlug", RouteType.Regular, "{slug}", new {controller = "Page", action = "Display", slug = "Default"}, null ); to map request to ~/Some-Page-Slug to ~/Page/Display/Some-Page-Slug. When adding content, user can choose to link to existing pages to create references and I then store those links in this format in the datastore: "/Some-Page-Slug". When I run the app in Cassini and pull the link out from datastore and attach it to A tag it looks like this http://localhost:93229/Some-Page-Slug and this link works. But when running the application in virtual directory under some website in IIS, the attached link generates this URL http://localhost/Some-Page-Slug, when it should be http://localhost/virtualdir/Some-Page-Slug. Of course, this generates 404 error. How can I solve this to be universally useful and working under all circumstances? Should I store it differently in the database or should I transform it into correct form in my Views at runtime and how to do that?

  I am working on a system that uses Azure Table Storage. In other systems (e.g., SQL, File based, etc), I can write a fake that allows me to test my data persistence logic. However, I can't see an easy way to create a fake for the Azure Table Service. I could create a new IIS project that behaves the same way, but that isn't a good way to write a unit test, it is more of an integration test. Any thoughts on how to unit test data access code that uses the Azure Table Storage client? Thanks, Erick

• What is the typical setup for a laptop used for multi platform development?

  I am planning to build a new laptop for development for both Windows & Linux platforms. On Windows, my development would be primarily on .NET/C#/IIS/MSSQL Server. On Linux, preferably Ubuntu, my development would be on Ruby and Python. I am thinking of buying a laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed with 4GB RAM/Intel Core 2 Duo/320 GB HD & then thinking of running 2 VMs for both Windows and Linux development with the host OS as my work station. Of course, I would be running DBs and web servers on the respective platforms. Is this a typical setup? My only concern is running two VMs side by side. Not sure if this configuration would be optimal. Alternative would be to do my Windows development on the host Windows 7 OS. Any thoughts?

  When I Press F5 on my VS2005 to debug the application, it launches the web app window but it is coming out of debug mode. When I tried to trace the Error in the EventViewer, this was the error: Failed in Token.vb(GetToken). The token was not in memory and the identity of the authenticated IIS caller was not permitted. The session may have unexpectedly terminated. The specific error message included: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I don't have any httpModules section in my config file and the sessionState mode="InProc"...

• Why can't I publish MVC project

  I'm having problems publishing my MVC project. When I do publish and upload everything to web server I get this: [InvalidOperationException: The view 'Index' or its master could not be found. The following locations were searched: ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx ~/Views/Home/Index.ascx ~/Views/Shared/Index.aspx ~/Views/Shared/Index.ascx] Weird thing is that Index.aspx exists in ~/Views/Home/, but IIS cannot find it there. If I copy entire project to web server and let asp.net compile it on the fly it works like a charm.   I noticed, that sometimes (especially where mod_rewrite is not available) this path scheme is used: http://host/path/index.php/clean_url_here --------------------------^ This seems to work, at least in Apache, where index.php is called, and one can query the /clean_url_here part via $_SERVER['PATH_INFO']. PHP even kind of advertises this feature. Also, e.g., the CodeIgniter framework uses this technique as default for their URLs. The question: How reliable is the technique? Are there situations, where Apache doesn't call index.php but tries to resolve the path? What about lighttpd, nginx, IIS, AOLServer? A ServerFault question? I think it's got more to do with using this feature inside PHP code. Therefore I ask here.

  I have a set of aspx pages that each live in their own directory and reference a single aspx.cs code behind file. This has worked fine previously because I never tried to pre-compile the site. IIS must have individually compiled each aspx, linking them to the contents of App_Code but never referencing more than one aspx at a time. Now that I'm trying to pre-compile the website using Web Deployment Projects I keep getting errors about the same class being found in multiple assemblies. I can't just drop the aspx.cs in App_Code and subclass it because it wouldn't be able to find the controls on the .aspx pages when compiling. Maybe I could explicitly define every control on the page in the .cs? But would that allow them to be wired up correctly? Any other ideas on how I can reference the same Page class from multiple .aspx pages and be able to pre-compile the entire website?

  I can go to http://www.sunnybrookfs.com/sstore/upload/ and it works awesome. But when I change the physical path in the basic settings for this website in the iis manager to the sstore/upload/ directory only text shows up. No images can be found or css style sheets. So basically www. sunnybrookfs. com/ goes to my xampp page, then I can access my OpenCart by going to http://www.sunnybrookfs.com/sstore/upload/. If I want www.sunnybrookfs.com to point to my store it does not work. Any suggestions? Thank you.

• Error calling webservice from JQuery

  I have a strange problem when I'm trying to call a simple webservice method from Jquery. Locally it works fine, but on my test-server it does not. The jquery request looks like this (only showing the actual request and not the rest of the method): $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "/Service/Service.asmx/AddTab", data: "tab=" + element.innerHTML, success: function(msg) { alert('success'); } }); When I run this locally from the test-server it works fine, which has me wondering if it could be some setting that I've missed in the IIS. If I navigate to the .asmx file and click the AddTab method I get a list of SOAP 1.1 and SOAP 1.2 XML, but not the HTTP POST request. If I navigate to it locally I get all three (SOAP 1.1, SOAP 1.2 and HTTP Post) The service is set up as follows: [WebService(Namespace = "mynamespace")] [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)] [System.ComponentModel.ToolboxItem(false)] [ScriptService()] public class Service : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod(EnableSession=true)] [ScriptMethod()] public void AddTab(string tab) { //Some code to add a tab which evidently works locally... } } Anyone have a clue what I'm missing here?

• Override ~ behaviour in controls

  Quick backstory: I'm making a "framed" version of my site that has a different master page than normal (one suitable for iframing). It's accessed by mysite.com/Framed/whatever, instead of mysite.com/whatever. This is rewritten in IIS to mysite.com/whatever?framed=true. That works fine. The issue I'm having is that all the links are relative using a ~ like ~/Server.aspx which works fine in the normal site. I need to override that so instead of producing ../Server.aspx (as it "should") it produces ../Framed/Server.aspx or Server.aspx. Currently this means that the page goes back to it's normal view (mystite.com/whatever2) as soon as you click on a link, I want it to continue to stay in mysite.com/Framed/...

(On the client PC or the IIS server) Is this a save way of cache objects and by adding and removing cache in this way will it influence any of the other clients, say for instance i've got 2 clients connected and both are storing cache "*HttpRuntime.Cache.Insert("Doc001", _document);*" and one client removes the cache, is it only removed on a client level?

• Does a WCF service with basicHttpBinding create a new connection for each request?

  I have a Silverlight client calling a WCF Service on an IIS web server. It uses the default basicHttpBinding setting for the calls. My client code has the usual Visual Studio generated proxy that is generated when using the 'Update Service Reference' menu option. Does every call to the service using that proxy use the same connection? Or does it create a connection each time a call is made and then close it down once the reply is received? As the client is actually making a SOAP call over HTTP I just assumed that every service request had a new connection created but I want to check if that is the case? (I need to know because if it creates a new connection each time then each request could end up at a different server because there are several servers being load balanced. It is uses a single connection for the duration of the proxy then I can assume they all end up at the same machine and so it would cache state.)

• Unable to resolve user environment variable correctly

  I am trying to resolve %USERPROFILE% using WScript.Shell. When I create a vbs file and run directly from Windows, I get the correct path for the logged-in user C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator but it gets resolved to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User instead of logged-in user when I used it inside my classic ASP webapp running on the local machine on IIS. The code I used is as below var oShell = new ActiveXObject("Wscript.Shell"); var userPath = oShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%USERPROFILE%"); Is there a permission/setting which I need to check to get correct value of USERPROFILE when retrieving value from the webapp? • app_offline not being respected?

  I'm doing some tests with deploying an application using the app_offline.htm functionality in asp.net. I've found that if I have a working application, and I put an app_offline.htm file in the root, and then rename the \bin folder, my app_offline.htm file does not get displayed. If I rename the bin folder back to "bin", my app_offline.htm file gets displayed as expected. I had assumed/thought that the presence of app_offline would supersede anything else that happens...am I mistaken? This is on Windows 7/IIS 7.5.
