• Good ACL implementation in Java

  Hi All. I'm implementing a web based document management system and I'd like to implement ACLs in my system. My formal requirements are hierarchal permissions (documents inherit permissions from their folders) user groups (users can dynamically create groups and associate users with groups). Such groups can have permissions on objects in the system. My code will query permission on objects in two cases: 1. Manipulating a single document 2. Listing all documents where a manipulation is possible The latter requirement seems the achilles heel for Spring Security ACLs (their method seems likely to incur multiple DB hits for each document I manage) Anyone know of another ACL implementation? • How to Create a Virtual Windows Drive

  Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that.   So far I have: int SimplifyText(char chars[], int length) { //To lower for(int i=0; i<length; i++) { chars[i] = tolower(chars[i]); } This function simplifies the text in the first argument which is an array containing the number of characters as given in the second argument The requirements are: tolower all remove all non-alpha characters replace multiple whitespace by one blank. Any leading whitespace at the beginning of the array should be removed completely. The resulting number of characters should be returned as the value of the function. And the annoying part: Another array cannot appear in the function Cannot use strings, only char arrays. Cannot using G++'s extension for setting an array size using a variable. Oh and can't use regex :) I'm stuck with this, any help would be great. :)

  Our product utilizes (the wonderful) Winpcap to capture ip packets from all devices with an IP address and analyze them in real time. Unfortunately, we discovered that it does NOT capture any packets on dialup (e.g. PPP) connections on Windows 7, and that there are no near-term plans for enabling this (1). So we need something else. Microsoft Network Monitor and Windows Packet Filter are two options that surfaced during a bit of googling, but before delving into research I wanted to ask the experienced: what are out options, given the following requirements: Capture all in/outbound IP packets on the machine. Complete background processing - no UI should be involved. Support Windows Vista / 7. Performance (user should not feel the difference). Thanks in advance.

• Is there a jquery clone of ext.js' toolbar?

  I'm looking for a jquery equivalent of ext.js' toolbar (http://dev.sencha.com/deploy/dev/examples/menu/menus.html). To be more precisely, my requirements are the following: the toolbar should consist of iconic and textual buttons and dropdown widgets buttons should either trigger actions directly or open submenus buttons and submenus should have the ability to remember the last selected state buttonsets should group multiple buttons and only allow one of them to be active In short words, I'm looking for a real toolbar in jquery and not for some modified site menu. I experimented with the button/buttonset/menu widget in jquery ui 1.9m2, but found its IE performance rather poor. It also felt awkward to combine these isolated widgets into a logically connected toolbar. Does anyone know of a better jquery toolbar plugin?

  I'm trying to create some application for Windows Phone = 7.1 During plannin my work and specyfiong technical requirements I've come across one problem. I wan't to have free application with basic functionality. And then it should be extendable with some non-free extensions (dlls?, databases?, SaaS?) Is it possible at the moment to use some MS api/app/etc. to be able to publish such extensions and sell them? What is the best way to do this if there is more than one solution? The main requirements of my application server are: flexible configuration, support for a extremely high number of concurrent users. It will be a system for the mobile communications industry, so it must have high availability as well. I am going to develop a J2EE application and Open Source Applications Servers are my only option. I have use GlassFish for a very small project and I really liked it. • How to create thumbnail images from DOC/RTF/PDF/XLS files

  I need to ask if any of you has any knowledge of creating file thumbnails on the fly. I have found a free component but it works only for PDF files, PDFThumbnailer. But my requirement is to convert DOC/RTF/PDF/XLS files to thumbnails on the fly, and if possible allow to save it as an image for later reference which currently PDFThumbnailer doesnt allow. PDFThumbnailer takes the pdf file and renders an image for it on browser, if that image can also be saved somehow to my machine that would be great too. Please guide me of how to achieve the above requirements. Any help for any filetype is appreciated. Thanks Imdadhusen

• Access DB with SQL Server Front End

  I have an old Access application that has a lot of code in forms and reports. The database is getting too large and I am thinking of moving the back end to SQL Server. My requirements are as follows: The DB needs to be multiuser and the users (3-5) will need to log in over the web I would prefer not to re-write the forms and reports in ASP or some other web front end. When I think about my choices, I see them as: Have an Access ADP front end and allows remote log-in to the server where it is stored. Not sure if it is possible for 2 users to simultaneously log in Distribute an ADP front end to the users, but I am not sure if it is possible to connect to a SQL Server back end over the internet, and the network traffic may be an issue. Any other solution? I appreciate all help. u

• Is RIA Services right for our Silverlight app at this point?

  Hi, I'm looking at Silverlight architectures and RIA Services looks interesting, but I am a bit concerned about its prelease status and how the feature set will change. We need our client app to be as responsive as possible over a slow network link, so a high priority is a solid sync system for pushing model state changes from the client back to the server. Will RIA Services help us in this regard or will I have to roll my own logic to do this ? Are there any other frameworks that can assist with this? Is the feature set involved in these requirements liable to change much in the next couple of months? If it makes any difference, our frontend is 100% Silverlight, so we dont need to worry about exposing SOAP APIs from the server or anything like that. It appears to me that RIA so far is a bit more mature for Silverlight use. Is this correct?

  what is the best way to check the strength of a password in iOS development? I came across this post: What is the best way to check the strength of a password? but this is not iOS specific. My question is - Does Apple or third party libraries provide any libraries by default which I can use to check if the user entered a secure password? If not, then as the above post says, is using regular expressions the best way? Does Apple have any requirements which our app needs to implement to make sure user has a secure password? I am planning on using the keychain to store the password.

  I want to know if there is any benefiting caching a sprite sheet and accessing the sprite by frame without using the CCSpriteBatchNode? In some parts of my game the sprite batch node is useful because there is a lot on the screen, however on another part its not, because there are just a few things, and there are requirements for layers so CCSpriteBatchNode wouldn't be useful. However, for the sake of consistency I would like to use Sprite Sheets for all my sprites, and so was beginning to wonder if I would still receive any benefit from it? (Or worse that it could some how be slower...)

• Why do I have to set the max length of every damn text column in the database?

  Why is it that every RDBMS insists that you tell it what the max length of a text field is going to be... why can't it just infer this information form the data that's put into the database? I've mostly worked with MS SQL Server, but every other database I know also demands that you set these arbitrary limits on your data schema. The reality is that this is not particulay helpful or friendly to work with becuase the business requirements change all the time and almost every day some end-user is trying to put a lot of text into that column. Does any one with some inner working knowledge of a RDBMS know why we just don't infer the limits from the data that's put into the storage? I'm not talking about guessing the type information, but guessing the limits of a particular text column. I mean, there's a reason why I don't use nvarchar(max) on every text column in the database.

• Normalize database or not? Read only MyISAM table, performance is the main priority (MySQL)

  I'm importing data to a future database that will have one, static MyISAM table (will only be read from). I chose MyISAM because as far as I understand it's faster for my requirements (I'm not very experienced with MySQL / SQL at all). That table will have various columns such as ID, Name, Gender, Phone, Status... and Country, City, Street columns. Now the question is, should I create tables (e.g Country: Country_ID, Country_Name) for the last 3 columns and refer to them in the main table by ID (normalize...[?]), or just store them as VARCHAR in the main table (having duplicates, obviously)? My primary concern is speed - since the table won't be written into, data integrity is not a priority. The only actions will be selecting a specific row or searching for rows that much a certain criteria. Would searching by the Country, City and/or Street columns (and possibly other columns in the same search) be faster if I simply use VARCHAR?

• Creating problem-sets with answers in Latex

My requirements are as follows: When I type them in, I want the questions and the answers to be next to each other in the source-code so that fixing errors, etc. can be done easily. • Pulling .live() functionality out of jQuery

  I am writing a Firefox Add-On that currently is depending on jQuery for the following things: Selectors Animations A special .live("focus") hail-mary event-catching maneuver that happens to work with jQuery 1.4.2 (but not 1.4.4) jQuery isn't well suited for functioning inside XUL, and it's a miracle we've gotten this far with it. We're trying to remove the jQuery requirements, the first two are easy (animations are simple, and we can use .querySelector() instead of jQuery), but the .live has proven impossible to do on our own. I've tried reading the source code, but I haven't been able to piece it apart. What is the jQuery .live function doing? There's clearly a lot more going on than document.addEventListener("focus"/"focusin",function_to_pick_apart_events). What else is going on here?
