• Managing Large Database Entity Models

  I would like hear how other's are effectively (or not) working with the Visual Studio Entity Designer when many database tables exists. It seems to me that navigating the Designer is tough enough to find what you are looking for with just a few tables but how about a database with say 100 to 200 tables? When a table change is made at the database level how is the model updated? Does it overwrite any manual changes you have made to the model? How would you quickly find an entity in the designer to make a change or inspect a change? Seems unrealistic to be scrolling around looking for specific entity. Thanks for your feedback!

  i have this code : IEnumerable<string> q = customers /*EF entity*/ .Select (c => c.Name.ToUpper()) .OrderBy (n => n) To select entity, ObjectContext actually create ObjectQuery, which implement IQueryable. The object return from ObjectQuery, is not normal object, but EntityObject but what if i write : ( notice the var) var q = customers /*EF entity*/ .Select (c => c.Name.ToUpper()) .OrderBy (n => n) it can be determined both to ienumerable or iqueryable : because ObjectQuery Also implements IEnumerable... i dont know if there's any specific info which tell the compiler "use A and not B. A is more specific..." ( there must be...i just cant find it) any help ? how will it know to use A || B ?

  I have a table with 4 columns, LoginID, LastName, FirstName, Email. The data for LoginID was populated from an other table. I have to write a small routine to update this table, by sending in the LoginID and with help of IDirectory routines, get the Lastname, firstname and email. • EntityFramework gives IDisposable error

  I use EF for the back-end DataLayer in my asp.net websites. I create a class library and add the Model in it, reference it and use it from the ASP.NET Website. But this time, I generated the model from database but it seems does not implement IDisposable, and the methods I used to see are not there. DeleteObject , SaveChanges etc. There are only Two tables in the DB and the Model was generated with only the TableSets and two methods AddToTableSet ... Had anybody encountered such a problem?

  I have the following query: $this->select() ->where("`name` LIKE ?",'%'.mysql_escape_string($name).'%') Now I have the Zend_Paginator code: $paginator = new Zend_Paginator( // $d is an instance of Zend_Db_Select new Zend_Paginator_Adapter_DbSelect($d) ); $paginator->getAdapter()->setRowCount(200); $paginator->setItemCountPerPage(15) ->setPageRange(10) ->setCurrentPageNumber($pag); $this->view->data = $paginator; As you see I'm passing the data to the view using $this->view->data = $paginator Before I didn't had $paginator->getAdapter()->setRowCount(200);I could determinate If I have any data or not, what I mean with data, if the query has some results, so If the query has some results I show the to the user, if not, I need to show them a message(No results!) But in this moment I don't know how can I determinate this, since count($paginator) doesn't work anymore because of $paginator->getAdapter()->setRowCount(200);and I'm using this because it taks about 7 sec for Zend_Paginator to count the page numbers. So how can I find If my query has any results?

• Is there a way to preserve HTML Formatting in LiveDocX?

  I have a large amount of content stored in a database as XHTML. I need to be able to pull this formatted content into a simple LiveDocX template with the formatting (bold, italic, bulleted lists, etc) preserved. Is this possible? If so, can anybody post a working example or link to an article? If not, are there other applications that I could look into? The client needs to be able to export content in the .doc/.docx file format. Thanks, Peter

  I have 2 tables, 1 with countries, 1 with states. The states table has a column with Population. I'm using entities and I have created a List of states for the countries public class TblCountries { //Entities for my table country ... public List<tblStates> States { get; set; } } So now I can for example List all the states that belong to a country. Now what I want to do is count the population, so I can show the population that of an entire country. I tried using in my view @foreach (var item in Model.Countries) { @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.States.Count<population>) } But this doesn't work, anyone know how to do this? • GetSystemPowerState Output not defined in pm.h

  I am trying to get the user idle state of my Windows Mobile device. When I run the function GetSystemPowerState (after 15 min of not touching the device) I get the following value: Dec: 302055424 Hex: 0x12010000 Bin: 10010000000010000000000000000 I was hoping that PowerState & POWER_STATE_USERIDLE == POWER_STATE_USERIDLE would be true. But POWER_STATE_USERIDLE is 0x01000000 and I have 0x02000000. I went to look up 0x02000000 and found that it is not in pm.h. What does 0x02000000 mean? Where could I go to find out?

  I have some code I use to transfer a table1 values to another table2, they are sitting in different database. It's slow when I have 100.000 records. It takes forever to finish, 10+ minutes. • Custom OData operation / customize EF model to hide join table in many-to-many relationship

  I've got a data model that has two tables with a join table for a many to many relationship & creating an OData service to expose the data for CRUD ops in a Silverlight app. What I'd like to do is abstract the join table from the service. I'm not sure if the best way to do this would be in the model (using EF in .NET3.5SP1) or if I should do it with a custom service operation. If I do it in the EF model (not sure how I'd do this), then the OOTB WCF Data Service stuff would make it easy to say [..]/Courses(1)/Modules ... otherwise I'd have to create a custom operation to do this. Is it possible to do this in the EF model and if so, how does that work?

• Windows Mobile 6.5 SndPlayAsync - C# wrapper?

  Hello I'm implementing mp3 playback on Windows Mobile 6.5. I need to use SndPlayAsync API function since I don't want to block calling thread until the file is played (SndPlaySync blocks until the audio file is playing). Unfortunately the SndPlayAsync method takes sound handle instead of sound file path as parameter so there's a need to open the handle before and release of it after playback. The problem is that I don't have any information about the playback completion in this API. Did anybody use a C# wrapper for this API? Where can I get one? I've looked up OPENNETCF but they seem not to support this API. Regards

Assume I have this: IQueryable<ParentEntity> qry = myRepository.GetParentEntities(); Int32 n = 1; What I want to do is this, but EF can't compare against null. qry.Where( parent => parent.Children.Where( child => child.IntCol == n ) != null ) What works is this, but the SQL it produces (as you would imagine) is pretty inefficient: qry.Where( parent => parent.Children.Where( child => child.IntCol == n ).FirstOrDefault().IntCol == n ) How can I do something like the first comparison to null that won't be generating nested queries and so forth?

• EF recovery from invalidoperationexception caused by server being down

  I had a windows service relying on EF, and it was running fine until the server went down. The problem was after the server went up again, it didn't fix itself and still threw the error: INTERNAL ERROR: Execution of the command requires an open and available connection. The connection's current state is broken. Not being very proficient in EF I'm not aware of how I could recover from such a scenario, and why it occurred in the first place? Anyone had this happen before?

  Hello, I have a database (sql 2008 mdf file), a class library project with an edmx file, created with the wizard. So the connection string is also made by the wizard. This project is on a teamfoundation server. I can use all the wizard made objects when coding. But when i run the program and I try to make an entityContainerName, the program crashes and gives this error: The specified named connection is either not found in the configuration, not intended to be used with the EntityClient provider, or not valid. on this line: public TestEntities() : base("name=TestEntities", "TestEntities") How can I solve this problem or what am I doing wrong?

• Make user object available to all Controllers in Zend?

My question is how do I make this object available to every Controller and action, so I don't have to pull it out of the session every time I need data from this object?   My developer built our registration page to display a div when logins failed based on a string in the URL. If it matters the new div I want to display is <div class="alert alert-error alert-login"> Email or password incorrect </div> I'd like to replace the php my self in my login.phtml and controller but not a good programmer. What can I replace $this->_redirect($url."?msg=invalid"); with so that no strings are added to the URL and display the appropriate div tags? Thanks
