• Trouble installing Rabbit VCS for nautilus

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and following instructions mentioned here to install Rabbit VCS. I added the PPA properly, did a sudo apt-get update and ran sudo apt-get install rabbitvcs-core rabbitvcs-nautilus rabbitvcs-thunar rabbitvcs-gedit rabbitvcs-cli There were dependency issues and I googled a bit and found out that I need to install RabbitVCS only for nautilus as that is the default file manager for Ubuntu. So I ran the install commands separately for rabbitvcs-core, rabbitvcs-gedit and rabbitvcs-cli. Now my understanding is that those are installed properly. However when I run the install command for rabbitvcs-nautilus, I still get a dependency issue. ranhiru@ranhiru-HP-HDX16-NoteBook-PC:~$ sudo apt-get install rabbitvcs-nautilus Reading package lists... • What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.

• If not gamedev, what do I do !

  Hi, I am a game dev who was working in the game-industry and then..got laid off. Ever since then, life couldn't get less stressful! During this time, I have met so many other devs who have also been laid off irrespective of the number of years they have been in the game. Now, the problem really gets worse, since I am not a US citizen (yes, I am in US) , and am on an international visa here, I might have to soon pack my bags and go back to my native country. Going back is not bad at all, apart from the fact, that gamedev is still in a very nascent stage there. There just aren't many opportunities. So, employment is the key to maintain a valid visa status. After giving it a lot of thought, I am thinking of staying away from gamedev jobs for the time being, given its job unstablity. This brings me to my current problem. I can't think of a domain/place where I can use my game development skills. I know graphics/simulation/visualization is huge, but I can't think straight and am left clueless where to go from here. What are some of the domains/companies where I can use my skills ? I'd appreciate any insight on this (and I apologize if this is not the place to post this kind of a question).

  Has anyone ever transcoded music from a high-quality aac to an mp3 (or vice-versa). The internet is full of people who say this should never be done, but apart from the theoretical standpoint that you can only lose information, does it matter in practise? is the difference perceivable, except on studio-equipment? does the re-encoding actually lose much information? If, p.e., high frequences are chopped away by the initial compression, those frequencies aren't there anymore, so this part of the compression-algorithm won't touch the data during the second compression. Am i wrong?

• Designing javascript chart library

  I started coding a chart library on top of d3js: My chart library. I read Javascript API reusability and Towards reusable charts. However, I am NOT really following the suggestions because I am not really convinced about them. This is how my library can be used to create a bubble chart: var chart = new XYBubbleChart(); chart.data = [{"xValue":200,"yValue":300},{"xValue":400,"yValue":200},{"xValue":100,"yValue":310}]; //set data chart.dataKey.x = "xValue"; chart.dataKey.y = "yValue"; chart.elementId = "#chart"; chart.createChart(); Here are my questions: It does not use chaining. Is it a big issue? Every property and function is exposed publicly. (Example: width, height are exposed in Chart.js). OOP is all about abstraction and hiding, but I don't really see the point right now. I think exposing everything gives flexibility to change property and functionality inside subclasses and objects without writing a lot of code. What could be pitfalls of such exposure? I have implemented functions like: zooming, "showing info boxes when data point is clicked" as "abilities". (example: XYZoomingAbility.js). Basically, such "abilities" accept "chart" object, play around with public variables of "chart" to add functionality. What this allows me to do is to add an ability by writing: activateZoomAbility(chartObject); My goal is to separate "visualization" from "interactivity". I want "interactivity" like: zooming to be plugged into the chart rather than built inside the chart. Like, I don't want my bubble chart to know anything about "zooming". However, I do want zoomable bubble chart. What is the best way to do this? How to test and what to test? I have written mixed tests: jasmine and actual html files so that I can test manually on browser.

• Increased CF JVM max heap size and now CF service will not start

  So I went in to ColdFusion Administrator and increased my CF JVM max heap size, then I was told I would need to restart the service, so I stopped the service, and then tried to start it again and got the following error message: Windows could not start the ColdFusion 8 Application Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2. So I went to the Event Viewer application, then took a look at the Application log and saw an error that said: The ColdFusion 8 Application Server service could not be started. Check the server "coldfusion" log files for more information. So I went to my ColdFusion logs directory opened the server.log log file and I don't see anything useful in there or any of the other log files.. Any idea how I can change the JVM heap size back to what it was so that I can start CF again?

• Formatted mac external hard drive loaded on pc

  I have an issue where it appears that an external hard drive which had been formatted on a mac system was loaded as a drive in Windows. Windows is obviously unable to read the data and now the drive won't mount in the mac. It appears that Windows overwrote something concerning the drive's information on what filesystems and types it has on it. Mac diskutility is unable to repair the drive and the partition is showing up in the utility as a FAT32. Using an applexsoft utility, I am able to verify the data is still on this drive, but I'd rather not spend $100 to save these files (its not my hard drive anyways). Is there a way I can use some UNIX commands to find out the partition information on the drive, back the raw data up on it, then restore the data back onto the drive after re-formatting it again?

  I have to download the html code of a web site during the game. I am taking the poster url of a movie from the imdb web site by scrapping the html ( also other informations ). I have to do the download process many times during the game for different movies. I can download and scrap the html but downloading the html takes too much time and it causes the game to slow down(freeze while downloading). How can I solve this problem? My one approach is to download and scrap all the information and store them in a database before the game and during the game access this information from the database. I think this will work properly but that is not what I exactly want. It would be better if it is dynamic. I also thought of using multi-threading but I am a bit confused about how to implement threading in xna. I read some articles about it but it is not so clear. I mean when should I start the thread and what about the update function etc. I need your help guys

• Web Application: Combining View Layer Between PHP and Javascript-AJAX

  I'm developing web application using PHP with CodeIgniter MVC framework with a huge real time client-side functionality needs. This is my first time to build large scale of client-side app. So I combine the PHP with a large scale of Javascript modules in one project. As you already know, MVC framework seperate application modules into Model-View-Controller. My concern is about View layer. I could be display the data on the DOM by PHP built-in script tag by load some data on the Controller. Otherwise I could use AJAX to pulled the data -- treat the Controller like a service only -- and display the them by Javascript.   R28 is a major release (as indicated by the careless omissions of "minor" and "revision" numbers. The formal name would be R28.0.0). Our customers expect grand new features and innovation from major releases, and "Ropsten" will not disappoint. One of the biggest challenges for IT systems is after the fact diagnostics. That is - Once something has gone wrong, the act of trying to figure out why it went wrong. Monitoring a system and keeping track of system health once it is running is considered a hard problem (one that we to some extent help our customers solve already with JRockit Mission Control), but doing it after something occurred is close to impossible. The most common solution is to set up heavy logging (and sacrificing system performance to do the logging) and hope that the problem occurs again. No one really thinks that this is a good solution, but it's the best there is. Until now. Inspired by the "Black box" in airplanes, JRockit R28 introduces the Flight Recorder. Flight Recorder can be seen as an extremely detailed log, but one that is always on and that comes without a cost to system performance. With JRockit Flight Recorder the customer will be able to get diagnostics information about what happened _before_ a problem occurred, instead of trying to guess by looking at the fallout. • SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

• Google earth will not reinstall

  I was trying to perform the the fix found at this link http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-make-google-earth-look-native-in-ubuntu It requires you to delete certain files from the /opt/google/earth/free folder and then add some new ones that you download. I deleted the files but the links to download the new ones were unusable. I was using gksudo nautilus so trash was disabled meaning I could not restore the files I had deleted. I the tried to go to the Google Earth website and reinstall it. I downloaded the .deb but when I tried to install it it gav me an error message saying "cannot install ia32-libs" I tried installing this via terminal and it gave me an error message saying chad@chad-Lenovo-G570:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs [sudo] password for chad: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.
