• rsync to ONLY keep files in destination that have been removed from source

  We use rsync to copy filesystem contents from one machine to another as a backup. We first run MACHINE-X-MACHINE-Y rsync for a straight backup with the --delete and --delete-excluded switches We also run an internal Rsync between the MACHINE-Y destination, and another folder on MACHINE-Y with either of the delete flags. This maintains a non-destructive copy in the event someone inadvertently deletes a file on MACHINE-X. However, it also has the overhead of being a complete copy of what has already been synchronized. Ideally I want to be able to run the non-destructive rsync in such a way that the destination ONLY receives the deleted files and so avoids unnecessary duplication . Is there any way to do this?

• Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• grub refuses to install to raid array

  I have a software raid 0 setup with dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. The GRUB bootloader that is already on the hard drive seems to work fine. However, since the latest package update for grub, it refuses to install the new version to the hard disk. grub-install throws the following error: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9. Check your device.map. Auto-detection of a filesystem of /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9 failed. Try with --recheck. If the problem persists please report this together with the output of "/usr/sbin/grub-probe --device-map="/boot/grub/device.map" --target=fs -v /boot/grub" to < [email protected] update-grub pops the same "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9. Check your device.map." every alternate line. I don't understand what exactly is going on. I'm afraid to reinstall the grub package because it might mess up the boot, which currently works fine. Is it safe to just ignore this?

• Can not find the source of Grant permission on a folder

  I have a security mystery :) Effective permissions tab shows that a few sampled users (IT ops) have any and all rights (all boxes are ticked). The permissions show that Local Administrators group has full access and some business users have too of which the sampled users are not members of. Local Administrators group has some AD IT Ops related groups of which the sampled users, again, appear not be members. The sampled users are not members of Domain Administrators either. I've tried tracing backwards (from permissions to user) and forwards (user to permission) and could not find anything. At this point, there are two options: I've missed something and they are members of some groups. There's another way of getting full permissions. Effective Permissions are horribly wrong. Is there a way to retrieve the decision logic of Effective Permissions? Any hints, tips, ideas?

• Putting a whole linux server under source control (git)

  I am thinking about putting my whole linux server under version control using git. The reason behind it being that that might be the easiest way to detect malicious modifications/rootkits. All I would naively think is necessary to check the integrity of the system: Mount the linux partition every week or so using a rescue system, check if the git repository is still untempered and then issue a git status to detect any changes made to the system. Apart from the obvious waste in disk space, are there any other negative side-effects? Is it a totally crazy idea? Is it even a secure way to check against rootkits since I most likely would have to at least exclude /dev and /proc ?

• Windows 8 install from USB freezes

  I'm trying to install Windows 8 from an 8GB Kingston Data Traveler. I'm currently using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to put the iso into the flash drive. It copies the files, but in the end it says it 'had a problem with bootsect' and could not make the flash drive bootable. This seems to be because my current system is Windows 7 32bits, and the bootsect.exe in the ISO is a 64-bit executable. Then I downloaded the 32-bit bootsect.exe and made the drive bootable by running: bootsect /nt60 E: /mbr Then I restarted and managed to boot via the flash drive, but now everything is very slow. It takes about two minutes for the initial black screen with the Windows logo and the spinner go away, then it goes to a purple-ish blank screen that stays on for about five more minutes and then it finally shows a dialog asking for the installation, date/time and keyboard languages. I input then, click "Install Now" and it takes about three more minutes with a "Setup is starting" screen. After that, the PC apparently reboots, the CPU fan speeds up considerably, and there's no video and nothing more happens even after more than ten minutes. What is happening? I already tried using another USB port and even installing from a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard disk, but the same thing happens. The file transfer speed to the Kingston drive was about only 3 megabytes per second.

  I'm having a two WD external hard disk with capacity of 1 TB. I'm trying to copy SAP file(capacity - 250 GB ) in the extension of .vmdk from one hard disk to another hard disk. But when ever i'm trying to copy, at down to the line it showing me this error message. By default my both hard disk File System value is NFTS, even though it showing me an this error message. • Change keyboard mapping (Input Source) from terminal in OS X

I can manually set it (System Preferences - Language & Text - Input Sources), and there's a nice option that lets me use different input sources for different documents, but I'd like to bind it to a key under zsh to easily swap between Qwerty and Dvorak layouts (I'm learning Dvorak, and having the option to switch easily would be sensational).

  I tried to upgrade a laptop to SP3, which broke it. I later found out SP3 doesn't work on that 2002 laptop. I can't uninstall SP3, or fix SP2, because the hard drive is now not detected during setup (I've read that's the problem you get). I put the hard drive in a USB drive case and plugged it into my other laptop, and I can read (& write to) the disk okay. (The hard drive won't fit in my other laptop, so I'm using USB.) I need to get that disk back to SP2, or fix whatever files got screwed up causing the disk to not be recognized. I don't want to do a re-install as there are 80GB of files on it I need, and they won't fit on the HD of my other laptop, and also because I no longer have some of the install CDs for software on it. What do I need to do to fix that drive from my other laptop? (I don't want my working laptop (XP SP3) to get screwed with by putting an SP2 disk in the CD drive, or the non-o/s data on the other hard drive screwed with.)

Since Exchange is getting more and more of a monster to maintain and is basically the only thing running on a Windows VM Server, I'm looking for an alternative with the following properties: Server based back-end that that can be installed / deployed on my machine and is not dependent on any third party services (e.g. Google Calendar). (Easy) import of existing Outlook calendars, either via some feature of Exchange or by ex- and importing from Outlook. Roughly the basic features of the Outlook calendar (categorizations, series, etc) Synchronization with the iPhone over wireless without a hitch (e.g. double or missing entries) Any recommendations?

• rsync invocation to replace symlinks pointing to source?

  Currently I'm moving a big filesystem to a new server as the original fileserver is no longer able to handle the filesystem writes. To make this quick I made symlinks at the target filesystem pointing to the original filesystem. Initially: /company/release (mountpoint of the original filesystem) After migration: /company/release.old (points to original filesystem after automount map update) /company/release (points to new fileserver/filesystem after automount map update) In /company/release there are symlinks like the following: /company/release/product-1.0.tar.gz - /company/release.old/product-1.0.tar.gz /company/release/product-1.0 - /company/release.old/product-1.0 (this is a tree of files) Using symlinks allowed me to move the writes to the new filesystem quickly. Now I'd like to slowly migrate the existing files and directories to the new filesystem. The problem I'm running into is that since the symlinks point back at the original files rsync doesn't see any difference and so it doesn't actually copy the file(s) or directory(s) and remove/overwrite the symlinks. Is there a set of rsync flags which will do what I want?

• apt unable to install particular version of package (but gives no error)

  I'd like to install particular version of libstd++6 with following command: # apt-get install libstdc++6=4.9.0-8 -V Reading package lists... It gives no error, but apt keeps version that was already installed. And also it refers to this package as "extra". There's no apt preferences set in /etc/apt/preferences.d. And the desirable version is definetely available through our local mirror. (If I try to run "apt-get download libstdc++6=4.9.0-8" it will download exactly desirable version.)   I have been dealing with a few problems while installing Windows 8 on my computer. On my old configuration, I had Windows 7 installed on my 60Go SSD, and my programs and user data on my 1To HDD, thanks to relative links. Yet, while installing Windows 8 on my SSD, he made a small partition on my HDD "System related". Plus, I'm afraid using only links is a bit cheap, and I saw lots of people messing with their registry when trying to put user data on another drive. I read a lot about optimizing Windows 8 for SSD, putting Users on another drive, and very similar situation that didn't quite correspond to what I was trying to achieve. Here's what I tried : http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4275-user-profiles-relocate-another-partition-disk.html Booting on Audit mode and using an XML to relocate Users didn't work as the specified version in the file is a test one, and I don't what to enter if I'm using the last release. Booting with the install DVD in repair mode to do a copy of the User and create a relative link, resulting in an error on the logon screen while entering my password saying that "The profile can't be load" (average translation of my error from french to english) Do anyone know how to do a clean separated install of Windows 8, with OS on a drive, and the other data on a second one ?   Network Setup: 10.0.0.1 Router: to internet 10.0.0.70 Server: Ubuntu based server,default gateway is 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.51 PC I created a PPTP connection(interface: ppp0) on Server to a machine on the internet, what I want to do is route all the traffic from certain IP address(10.0.0.51) through the PPTP connection and then to the internet. What I did are: Set the gateway on PC(10.0.0.51) as 10.0.0.70 Enabled ipv4 forward on 10,0,0,70 Add the masquerade rule to iptable: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -s 10.0.0.51 -j MASQUERADE After that, it seems none of the traffic from 10.0.0.51 be redirected to ppp0, instead these traffic are still going through 10.0.0.1 directly. Any thoughts on it?

I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

• Removing extra commas in CSV without another data source

  We have a large database with customer addresses that was exported from an SQL database to CSV. In the event that a company has a comma in their name, it (predictably) throws the whole database out of whack. Unfortunately, there are so many instances of this (and commas in the second address line) that the whole CSV (~100k rows) is a huge mess. The obvious fix is to export the data again in a different, non comma reliant format, but access to that SQL database is more or less impossible at the moment... I've tried a few tools and brainstormed about combining things to fix this, but I figured asking couldn't hurt. Thanks!
