  • Can't get MySQL to install

    I'd like to think I know what I'm doing in a Unix shell but maybe not. I made a mistake in a configuration file for MySQL, so I decided to just uninstall it and then reinstall it, so I did: sudo apt-get --purge remove mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mysql-client The files were deleted, so I then tried to install it, but it didn't ask me for a root password or anything else, so I uninstalled it using the above command again and then did sudo rm -rf /etc/mysql sudo rm /etc/init.d/mysql sudo rm -rf /var/lib/mysql* I then restarted the computer then installed it again: sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client It asked for a root password, and everything looked like it would work, until I saw this: $ sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client Reading package lists...   • SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise won't install on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise

    I've been trying to install SQL Server on a new Windows Server 2008. I have tried everything but I haven't been able to narrow down the problem. When the installation fails I get " Exit code (Decimal): -2068643839". The problem with this is that according to Microsoft this is a generic error code. I follow their guide to look into the detail.txt inside C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\ But I can't find something that specifies the exact error. Any suggestions ?     I have a Debian machine that I have previously installed MySQL on. In an attempt to delete it, I stupidly deleted the directories/files /etc/mysql/, /etc/init.d/mysql, /usr/lib/mysql/, /var/lib/mysql/. I previously had MySQL working great, I just want to get it back to that state. Thanks so much for your help.

What are some pros and cons to using BizTalk Server (both from a developer standpoint and a business user), and should companies also consider open source alternatives?     I'm using tortoiseSVN to checkout the log4j v1.2 source from - http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/logging/log4j/trunk But i keep getting this error: Error: OPTIONS of '': Could not Error: resolve hostname `svn.apache.org': No such host is known. The funny thing is that i can access 'svn.apache.org' from my browser but if i try to ping it from the command prompt, it says host not found. Does any body else face this problem? Is there any other way to get the source for log4j v1.2?

  • Bash sourcing of functions in other languages

    This is, perhaps, a silly question, but it's something that I've wondered about: is it possible to, say, define a Ruby/Python/Perl/etc. function in some file and then source it in Bash (to make it available anywhere in the current shell)? At the moment, I "source" scripts/functions in other languages by creating a bash alias that executes that script... But I wonder if it's possible for Bash to interpret those other functions directly? Thanks. :)

The code conveyed by me to you is in a non-functional state - it will have to be combined with the actual source of Ext JS, which you(your browser) will have to retrieve, from a source made public by someone else to be usable. Now, if the answer to the above is no, how does me conveying this code in visible form differ from the 'invisible' form conveyed by my web server? As a side note, a very similar thing is done in Linux with many projects that depends on less permissive licenses - the user has to retrieve these on its own and make these available for the primary lib/executable. How is this not the same if the user is informed on beforehand that he (the browser) will have to retrieve the needed resources from a different source? Just to make it clear, I'm pro FLOSS, and I have also published a number of projects licensed under more permissive licenses. The reason I'm asking this is that I still haven't found anyone offering a definitive answer to this.

I am looking for a solution that would allow me to divide my time better. is open sourcing where I take the role of guiding the project realistic, or are there better solutions? In my case, one project has a reasonably sized community of users going for it but is currently closed source. There have been requests to open source it.

    I wonder about installing the latest version of Ruby on Ubuntu 9.04. Now I can run through the ./configure and make stuff fine, but what I wonder about: how to avoid conflicts with the packaging system? For example if some other package I install depends on Ruby, wouldn't the package manager install the (outdated) Ruby package and in the worst case overwrite my files? So I think I need some way to tell Ubuntu that Ruby is in fact already installed?

    I've got a couple of different projects that I'd like to post up as open source. I've been trying to decide which of the three big open-source project hosting sites makes the most sense, or if I should just host it myself. Are there any inherent drawbacks or benefits to these three? Is there a "best" place to host a project? Do different sites make more sense for different kinds of projects?

  • What does the PHP configuration option "--prefix=PREFIX" do?

    I have heard that setting the --prefix=PREFIX option when compiling PHP on linux will allow you to have more than one install of PHP at a time without them clashing. (I think the default if this isn't set is /usr/local). However, I'm not sure what exactly it does or what a good setting to use is. Furthermore, I've also heard that setting it to something other than the default value might make some PHP extensions harder to install. ./configure --prefix=PREFIX ...
