  Is there any software that can capture the screen and turn it into a webcam-type input so that you can easily record and/or broadcast your screen with regular video software? Edit: Just to be clear, I'd like to be able to use it live as an input to video conferencing software as well as for making recordings with video editing software. Bonus points if it allows me to capture a screen remote from the computer that is sending the video (for example by connecting to another computer with VNC). So it should show up as an input alongside any webcams I have installed, but instead of being a camera, it should be whatever is on the screen.

• What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

  I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

  I'm trying desperately to find a software licensing model that would allow me to make my product completely open to the public domain for personal use/modification, but would be able to be sold commercially. I know such a beast exists, and I'm sure in many flavors.   I have taken a job selling a customized "online workplace management application." Our clients' businesses work around the application. Our clients track their time (which is how they get paid), finances and work documents through the application we provide and give their clients access to their interests throught the application. Our clients range from 2 users to 500 users. Each user probably processes 200 files per year and generates a fee for each file in the range of $500-$2500 per file. The application has been refined over a period of years and has cost around a million to develop. Does anyone know what range something like this sells for (source code, add-ons such as support and hosting)? I am trying to wrap my head around it as my background is not in software development.

• Should we develop code on a local machine in a VLAN?

  Because of security reasons, we will not be able to use IIS on our local machines. I'm sure that many of you have faced the same problem, so how did you solve it? Here are the options that we're looking at: Create a VLAN that is isolated from the network for development. This will allow us to use any software, including IIS, that we want. A disadvantage is testing Web services with external organizations, which can be overcome by using stubs. Not use a VLAN and use only the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio, and then deploying that code to the development server. This has the disadvantage of not being able to replicate the production environment during local development. In addition, at least one developer needs IIS for GIS development, so he couldn't develop locally. Thank you for comments or suggestions that you may have!

  I was working on a program,that I need to support new additions. Hmmm. Let me give you some background on the program. It is an educational software program that has quizzes for the user to take, just to gain odd knowledge. Now, It currently supports 6 subjects, all organized with directores on the HDD ( i.e. the Science directory is called science. ) and the way you launch the subject to see what quizzes you have to take is by pushing a button on the home screen. This sort of thing prevents easy subject additions. I want to be able to add a subject later on without having to recode the home screen and re organize all the buttons. I would use a Listbox and os.listdir(...), but I was kind of wanting something prettier than a Listbox. I am using Tkinter on Windows. The Python version I am using is 2.6 Is there a "fancy" listbox sort of thing that can be styled to work with the background?

  It's actually two questions in one: What is the right attitude for a programmer? How do you (or would you) look for one when interviewing or during hiring process? Please note this question is not about personality or traits of a candidate, it is about their attitude towards what they do for living. This is also not about reverse of programmers pet peeves. The question has been made community wiki, since I am interested in a good answer rather than reputation. I disagree that the question is purely subjective and just a matter of opinion: clearly some attitudes make a better programmer than others. Consecutively, there might quite possibly exist an attitude that is common to the most of the better programmers. Update: After some deliberation I came up with the following attitude measurement scales: identifies themselves with the job ? fully detached perceives code as a collection of concepts ? sees code as a sequence of steps thinks of creating software as an art ? takes 100% rational approach to design and development Answers that include some sort of a comment on the appropriateness of these scales are greatly appreciated. Definition of "attitude": a complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways; "he had the attitude that work was fun" The question came as a result of some reflection on the top voted answer to "How do you ensure code quality?" here on Stack Overflow.

There never seems to be a clear delineation between the three. Or there's a lot of domain crossover between the three. Actually, another I've seen while looking around here on Stackoverflow has been "Solutions Architect" as well. But that one doesn't seem to be so prevalent in other places. • Some SVN Repositories not working - 405

  I have 2 groups of repositories, web and engineering. I setup web about 3 months ago and it works great, I'm trying to move engineering over to this same SVN server and I'm getting a PROPFIND of /svn/engineering/main: 405 Method Not Allowed error when I try to do a checkout. • Introducing Ben Barreth, Community Builder &amp; Software Developer at GWB

  Please extend a warm welcome to Ben Barreth as the new community builder and full-time software developer at Geeks With Blogs. We've been wanting to add some cool features to the site but haven't had the opportunity until now. Adding Ben to the team should give us a big kick in the right direction. Ben has several years of .Net development experience and is heavily involved in the startup community in Kansas City, including the KC Startup Village as well as his own startup initiatives: Homes for Hackers and FreeIdeas.co. He loves working with people even more than coding and is excited to serve the GWB community in any way possible. Ben originally met Matt Watson as a beta tester for Stackify, the software company that gives developers the safe & secure access to troubleshoot in production. Jeff Julian and Matt are old friends and recently decided the site needed new ownership to carry it forward and build the enhancements it deserves. The site management transferred in October and Matt quickly began looking for a full-time community builder to lead the charge. Ben bumped into Matt once again at a Tech Cocktail event at the Boulevard Brewery where Stackify was presenting and an alliance was forged. Yes, the beer really IS that good! • What Is A Software Architect&rsquo;s Job Today?

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/10/25/what-is-a-software-architectrsquos-job-today.aspx It was 2001 when a project manager first put my job title as architect on a statement of work.  A lot has changed over the last twelve years.  The concepts around what an architect is has evolved.  In the early days I would have said that they just rebranded the role of the system analyst.  Now we have a multitude of architect titles: application, solution, IT, data, enterprise.  Whatever the title the goals are the same.  An architect takes the business needs and maps them to the solutions that are needed and at the same time works to ensure the quality of the solution and its maintainability. One of the problems I see these days is that we are expecting every developer to have architect skills.  That in itself is not a problem.  This reduces the need for dedicated architects.  Not every developer though is going to be able to step up to this level.  Some are just good at solving small problems instead of thinking in the larger abstract. Another problem is the accelerating speed and breadth of new technologies and products.  For an architect to be good at his job he needs to spend large amounts of personal time studying just to stay relevant. In the end I don’t think the main objectives of an architect has changed, just the level of commitment needed to stay of value to your company.  Renew your commitment to your profession and keep delivering great solutions.
