  • Remembering window's location and desktops on Mac OS X

    When I use my Mac, I like have a standard windows organization to do my Work: I put 4 consoles opened side by side on console 1 I put Safari in other Mail and iCal in another TextMate on other etc And depending on the work I do, I'd like to have different window configuration. And when I have a external monitor connected, I need another configuration. Is there any tool to make this? What is the best way to do it?

  • Migrate IMAP account between providers - client access only

    I have an IMAP E-Mail account with my old provider. I have a new, empty IMAP account with the new provider. Is there a tool or Thunderbird to migrate the E-Mail data from one account to another? I'm a bit wary about just doing a drag & drop in Thunderbird because it's quite a lot of data, and I have a deep distrust against how Thunderbird deals with IMAP data.

    Hello, I'm looking for a windows tool that can tell me who is using bandwith. As of now I've setup so that the switch where all pcs are connected, mirrors the router's traffic to my pc, meaning that from my NIC I am able to see all outgoing and incoming internet connections. This works, I have used NIMAS (http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/200) and I am able to see internet traffic. Now what I am looking for is something even more simple, where I can see what computers are using what banwidth, live.

  • Automatic resize two windows to fit desktop

    Hi I have a single monitor, but with a wide resolution. Some times it would be helpful to have two applications running next to each other. Is there a tool to quickly tell windows to resize the two applications to fit the desktop? Perhaps even with an option to make the one application use 75% and the other 25% I know the Windows 7 Alt+left/right arrow feature, which is nice, but still needs too many clicks.

  • win 7: copy all files from a complex folder structure to one folder

    I'd have a complex folder structure like: h:\folder1\folder2\folder3 h:\folder1\folder2\a h:\folder1\b h:\folder1\folder3 h:\folder1\folder4\d Only with probably 100's of folders and a depth of around 4 (I'm guessing) Anyway I want to run a command that will move all the files from every sub folder into the top level folder. so something like h:\folder1\*\*.* to h:\folder1 Is there a tool I can use to do this? does win 7 have a command that will do this?   • How to bind old user's SID to new user to remain NTFS file ownership and permissions after freshly reinstall of Windows?

    Each time we reinstalled Windows, it will create a new SID for user even the username is as same as before. // example (not real SID format, just show the problem) user SID -------------------- liuyan S-old-501 // old SID before reinstall liuyan S-new-501 // new SID after reinstall The annoying problem after reinstall is NTFS file owership and permissions on hard drive disk are still associated with old user's SID. I want to keep the ownership and permission setting of NTFS files, then want to let the new user take the old user's SID, so that I can access files as before without permission problem. The cacls command line tool can't be used in such situation, because the file does belongs to new user, so it will failed with Access is denied error. and it can't change ownership. Even if I can change the owership via SubInACL tool, cacls can't remove the old user's permission because the old user does not exist on new installation, and can't copy the old user's permission to new user. So, can we simply bind old user's SID to new user on the freshly installed Windows ? For example, the built-in dir command, as well as takeown and icacls run into an infinite loop with the Application Data directory (1). Does anyone out there have a solution where I can do automatic network mapping using a tool like "The Dude", then pull that file over to a manually editable format for cleaning up and/or enhancing in Visio or Dia?

  • Why are my hard drives failing?

    I have a small Ubuntu server running at home, with 2 HDDs. There are two software raids (raid1) on the disks, managed by mdadm, which I believe is irrelevant, but mentioning it anyway. Both of the HDDs are Western Digital, and have been used for around 2 years, when one of them started making clicking noises, and died. I figured that maybe it's natural after 2 years, so I bought a new one, and resynced the raid arrays. After about a month, the other drive also died. I didn't get suspicious, since both drives have been bought at the same time, it's not that surprising to see both of them near each other, so I bought another one. So far, 2 old drives failed, and 2 brand new in the system. After one month, one of the new drives died. This is when it started getting suspicious. Since the PC was put together from some really old parts (think AthlonXP), I figured that maybe the motherboard's SATA controller is the culprit. Of course you can't switch parts easily in an old PC like this, so I bought a whole system, new MB, new CPU, new RAM. Took the just failed drive back, since it was under warranty, and got it replaced. So it is up to 2 failed drives from the old ones, and 1 failed drive from the new ones. No problems, for 1 month. After that errors were creeping up again in /var/log/messages, and mdadm was reporting raid array failures. I started tearing my hair out. Everything is new in the system, it's up to the third brand new HDD, it's simply not possible that all of the new drives that I bought were faulty. Let's see what is still common... the cables. Okay, long shot, let's replace the SATA cables. Take HDD back, smile to the guy at the counter and say that I'm really unlucky. He replaces the HDD. I come home, one month passes and one of HDDs fails, again. I'm not joking. Two of the brand new HDDs have failed. Maybe it's a bug in the OS. Let's see what the manufacturer's testing tool says. Download testing tool, burn it to a CD, reboot, leave HDD testing overnight. Test says that the drive is faulty, and I should back up everything, if I still can. I don't know what's happening, but it does not look like a software problem, something is definitely thrashing the HDDs. I should mention now, that the whole system is in a shoebox. Since there are a load of "build your own ikea case" stuff, I thought there shouldn't be any problems throwing the thing in a box, and stuffing it away somewhere. The box is well ventilated, but I thought that just maybe the drives were overheating. There is no other possible answer to this. So I took the HDD back, and got it replaced (for the 3rd time), and bought HDD coolers. And just now, I have heard the sound of doom. click click whizzzzzzzzz. I'm not sure now that the original two have been faulty, or suffered the same thing that the new ones. There is nothing common in the system, apart from the OS which is Ubuntu Karmic now (started with Jaunty). New MB, new CPU, new RAM, new SATA cables. No, the little holes on the HDD are not covered I'm crying. Really. I don't have the face to return to the store now, it's not possible for 4 drives to fail under 4 months. A few ideas that I have been thinking: Is it possible that I fuck up something when I partition and resync the drives? Can it be so bad that it physicaly wrecks the drive? (since the vendor supplied tool says that the drive is damaged) I do the partitoning with fdisk, and use the same block size for the raid1 partitions (I check the exact block sizes with fdisk -lu) Is it possible that the linux kernel or mdadm, or something is not compatible with this exact brand of HDDs, and thrashes them? Is it possible that it may be the shoebox? Try placing it somewhere else? It's under a shelf now, so humidity is not a problem either. Is it possible that a normal PC case will solve my problem (I'm going to shoot myself then)? I will get a picture tomorrow. Am I just simply cursed? Any help or speculation is greatly appreciated. Edit: The power strip is guarded against overvoltage. Edit2: I have moved inbetween these 4 months, so the possibility of the cause being "dirty" electricity in both places, is very low. Edit3: I have checked the voltages in the BIOS (couldn't borrow a multimeter), and they are all seem correct, the biggest discrepancy is in the 12V, because it's supplying 11.3. Should I be worried about that? Edit4: I put my desktop PC's PSU into the server. The BIOS reported much more accurate voltage readings, and also it has successfully rebuilt the raid1 array, which took some 3-4 hours, so I feel a little positive now. Will get a new PSU tomorrow to test with that. Also, attaching the picture about the box: (disregard the 3rd drive)

  • Merging Flash animations

    If I have a Flash project in which there are multiple movie clips animating, each with its own timeline and other embedded movie clips, again, each with its own timeline, how can I merge everything so that I end up with a single timeline and a single layer? If Flash doesn't support this, maybe there's something else out there that can do this? I'm thinking that such a tool would need to calculate the intermediary tween values and somehow create keyframes with those values, then break everything apart and only animate the correct parts from the calculated keyframe values...

  • Putting Illustrator CS4 in fullscreen?

    Hi, so I got this drawing tool from my good friend because he got a bigger and better one and I have the Adobe Suite CS4. But, I'm not a good drawer so I am interested in learning and I kind of want to turn Illustrator into a canvas that takes up the whole screen. In addition, I don't want the window to be shown at all. Is there any way to do this? Photoshop or another alternative works also works but I would prefer Illustrator.
