  • C# can't cast bool to int

    We all know that in C# we can't cast bool to int. I wanted to see what is the binary representation of true with bitmask, but I can't use (bool & int).. I think the problem is the architecture desicion "true is true, not any number != 0" (C++) and I was wondering what the benefits of such an architecture are? What is so bad with the C true/false concept?

  • Best way to save user settings on client-side (javascript,jquery)

    I have a settings page that a user can enter some text and save directly to a combobox. Next time when page loads, combobox is filled in with the previous entered text. Also i have a modify button, so the user can delete or edit a value from the combobox. My question is, what's the best way to save to user settings on the client with javascirpt/jquery? I can only think of using an array and then (push/pop).,,Anyone got some bad experience with arrrays? thx

    Here's what I am looking to accomplish, I have a class that has an enum of some values and I want to subclass that and add more values to the enum. This is a bad example, but: public class Digits { public enum Digit { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 } } public class HexDigits extends Digits { public enum Digit { A, B, C, D, E, F } } so that HexDigits.Digit contains all Hex Digits. Is that possible?

  • Untar, ungz, gz, tar - how do you remember all the useful options?

    I am pretty sure I am not the only one with the following problem: every time I need to uncompress a file in *nix I can't remember all the switches, and end up googling it, which is surprizing considering how often I need to do this. Do you have a good compression cheat sheet? Or how about a mnemonic for all those nasty switches in tar? I am making this article a wiki so that we can create a nice cheat sheet here. Oh, and about man pages: is there's one thing they are not helpful for, it's for figuring out how to uncompress a file.

    If I'm not wrong, because of its nature in factory method there is cyclic dependency: Base class needs to know subclasses because it creates them, and subclasses need to know base class. Having cyclic dependency is bad programming practice, is not it? Practically I implemented a factory, I have problem above, even I added #ifndef MYCLASS_H #define MYCLASS_H #endif I'm still getting Compiler Error C2504 'class' : base class undefined And this error disappers when I remove subclass include from base class header.

  • Python constructor does weird things with optional parameters

    Can you help me understand of the behaviour and implications of the python __init__ constructor. It seems like when there is an optional parameter and you try and set an existing object to a new object the optional value of the existing object is preserved and copied. Ok that was confusing... so look at an example I concocted below. In the code below I am trying to make a tree structure with nodes and possibly many children . In the first class NodeBad, the constructor has two parameters, the value and any possible children. The second class NodeGood only takes the value of the node as a parameter. Both have an addchild method to add a child to a node. When creating a tree with the NodeGood class, it works as expected. However, when doing the same thing with the NodeBad class, it seems as though a child can only be added once! The code below will result in the following output: Good Tree 1 2 3 [< 3 >] Bad Tree 1 2 2 [< 2 >, < 3 >] Que Pasa?     I am building a service that will have a 'forgot my password' feature. In addition to that, it will also email users when results are ready from my service. I would like to ensure delivery of my emails so I was looking around to find a service that would let me send emails. All that I've been able to find so far are services that require a user to opt-in to a list. In other words, I've been unable to find any that will let me send customized messages to individual users. I am currently using swiftmailer for php but would really like to find a service to do this...Anyone know of one? G-Man

  • Can I reset a forgotten owner password with iText?

    With iText I can use Java to open a pdf and write it. If the pdf has an owner password I can still open it but it can not be written. Clearly the content is readable, it seems like at that point you could simply write the document to a new file. iText doesn't allow this, it throws a bad password exception. Is there a way around this?

    I'm developing a form generator, and wondering if it would be bad mojo to store JSON in an SQL Server database? I want to keep my database & tables simple, so I was going to have `pKey, formTitle, formJSON` on a table, and then store {["firstName":{"required":"true","type":"text"},"lastName":{"required":"true","type":"text"}} in formJSON. would this slow down the DB server too much to set live? That way is doesn't show up inside the application bundle as a file and it's not subject to manipulation by a user (whether good-intentioned or bad). Is this even possible? For example, If I add a new file into a directory, I would like to get some notification of that event.   • When should I use $ (and can it always be replaced with parentheses)?

    From what I'm reading, $ is described as "applies a function to its arguments." However, it doesn't seem to work quite like (apply ...) in Lisp, because it's a binary operator, so really the only thing it looks like it does is help to avoid parentheses sometimes, like foo $ bar quux instead of foo (bar quux). Am I understanding it right? Is the latter form considered "bad style"?

    I have trouble choosing the right audio playback technology. There's a ton of technologies to use on the iPhone, it's so confusing. What I need to do is this: start playing short sounds ranging between 0.1 and 2 seconds high quality playback, no crackle (I heard some of the iPhone audio playback technologies do a crackle sound on start or end, which is bad!) ability to start playback of a sound, while there's already another one playing right now (two, three or more sounds at the same time) What would you suggest here, and why?   • How do I generate different yyparse functions from lex/yacc for use in the same program?

    Hi, I want to generate two separate parsing functions from lex/yacc. Normally yacc gives you a function yyparse() that you can call when you need to do some parsing, but I need to have several different yyparses each associated with different lexers and grammars. The man page seems to suggest the -p (prefix) flag, but this didn't work for me. I got errors from gcc that indicated that yylval was not properly being relabeled (i.e. it claims that several different tokens are not defined). Does anyone know the general rpocedure for generating these separate functions? thanks

  • jquery - detect if selector returns null

    What is the best way to detect if a jQuery-selector returns an empty object. If you do: alert($('#notAnElement')); you get [object Object], so the way I do it now is: alert($('#notAnElement').get(0)); which will write "undefined", and so you can do a check for that. But it seems very bad. What other way is there?
