• What to return when making an Ajax request

  When we return data from an Ajax call, is it better to return a document containing HTML to display on the page or return an Xml/json data which can be processed? I know different circumstances may determine what 'better' means, but I really want to know which will be more appropriate for different circumstances. I am working on the framework for a large ASP .Net application, using jQuery Ajax (forms plugin). My initial thought was to return the data as Xml, then process accordingly. Then this increases processing required in Javascript, to populate the page. I am trying to balance flexible, clear and simple. Thanks in advance for your knowledge and information.

• removing the single quote from a list of

  I need to append/format a url with a list of ids for an api call however, when i put the list at the end of the api https://api.twitter.com/1.1/users/lookup.json?user_id=%s'%a i just get an empty string as a response. i have tried turning the list into a string and removing the square brackets doing a = str(followers['ids'])[1:-1] but i still get the same problem. and im assuming that its being caused by the single quote at the start. i have tried removing the apostrophe from the string doing a.replace("'", "") and now i have run out of ideas thanks

  (edited) I am reading a JSON file that includes some UTF-8 characters that are encoded like this: "\uf36b". I am trying to write a RegExp to convert this to an HTML entity that looks like "&#x1F36B;". This displays the character correctly in my html page. I haven't been able to correctly display the character that should be associated with "\uf36b", especially when in a longer sentence that also includes other text. How can I write a regexp that replaces strings like "\uf4d6" and "\uf36b" but leaves other text alone? • Facebook user_id as MongoDB BSON ObjectId?

  I'm rebuilding Lovers on Facebook with Sinatra & Redis. I like Redis because it doesn't have the long (12-byte) BSON ObjectIds and I am storing sets of Facebook user_ids for each user. The sets are requests_sent, requests_received, & relationships, and they all contain Facebook user ids. I'm thinking of switching to MongoDB because I want to use it's geospatial indexing. If I do, I'd want to use the FB user ids as the _id field because I want the sets to be small and I want the JSON responses to be small. But, is the BSON ObjectId better (more efficient for MongoDB) to use than just an integer (fb user_id)?

• Servlet doesnt appear to execute in a threaded manner

  I have developed a simple server using Tomcat which runs a servlet. The servlet calls a command line program - which takes about 20 seconds to execute then returns the result to the user via JSON. The problem is - if i make above 2 simultaneous requests, the servlet blocks until one of the previous requests is completed. An example of this can be seen below - "Im in" is the top of the servlet, and the list of results is after the servlet is executed. All requests were made at the same time - but you can clearly see they are not dealt with simultaneously. What setting do I need to change in tomcat in order to have all requests handeled at the same time?   I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

My extension should change the background color of google home page (https://www.google.com) I wrote this code (including jquery): $(".gsib_a").style="background:#FF0000"; But not worked. I'm sure I added jQuery to content script, and the manifest.json file is set. I am sure because this code works: $(".gsib_a").hide(); And I am sure changing style of the element with class of gsib_a is exactly what I need and affects.   Is there some way to pass an object to a windows service? I know the method myServiceController.Star(string[] arg) but i need to pass a more complex object than a string array. Actually, i don't need the object to be passed as a parameter, what i really needs is that the service can use an object created in a windows forms application. I've tried using System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer.Serialize method to convert the object into a Json but i couldn't because the object contains a circular reference. I also tried using pointers, but i couldn't becouse it is a managed type object. Any idea what can i do?

  Hi all, I have a problem with a jQuery ajax call. I need to wait for the call to be finished in order to return a value. However, the script seems to jump ahead and not wait for the call to be over. my function then returns "undefined". I have tried to use the .ajax() method and set the value of async to false, but this would not work either. I could I get my function to return the value that I could through the ajax call? • How to slow down Uploadify plugin script voor jQuery

  Now if that isn't a weird question, I don't know what is. But here is the problem: I have a function in my "onSelect" option that has to collect some data (through AJAX) and I have a function in my "onComplete" option that processes the just uploaded files based on the data "onSelect" collected. However, with very small files, the "onSelect" hasn't finished yet before the upload is complete and the "onComplete" fails because it lacks the necessary data. Bigger files work just fine. So, I'm looking for a way to stall the upload of the file. To let it start only after the function in onSelect completed fetching the necessary data. Any ideas? • What is a good format for command line output when it is being used for further processing?

  I have written a console application in Delphi that queries information from several locations. This application will be launched by another process, and the output to STDOUT will be captured by the launching process. The information I am retrieving is to be interpreted by the calling application for reporting purposes. What is the best way to output this data to STDOUT so that it can be easily parsed? JSON? XML? CSV? The data, specifically, is remote workstation information, so it will pull things back like running processes, and details about each process. Does anyone have any experience with this or suggestions?

  Well since it seems relatively difficult to send the object of a WebControl over JSON using jquery.ajax() I've decided to send the name of the control as a string because I know how to do that. Then I promptly realized that, from a web service, I don't actually know how to search for a control by ID name. Since its a service I can't seem to get Control.FindControl() to work so does anyone have ideas or suggestions? All I'm trying to do is call a databind() on my radcombobox. Thanks in advance! For any of you that knows anything about asp.net/rad controls - I'm basically updating a database and want the radcombobox to be in sync with that database again after adding something, before I autoselect what was just added.   Hello all, I'm looking to purchase a jquery book. I'm a strong C# developer whose had experience with dojo. Now, I'm building my own site and am looking to learn a new platform in the process. So, I've chosen jquery. With dojo, I know how to make my own widgets. I want to learn about ways to plug into jquery to make reusable controls. Also, I plan to make heavy use of json with ajax. Other things to consider: I would call my javascript expertise as intermediate. I'd like to find a book that is as up to date with the jquery platform as possible as I know that in a few months it will likely be out of date. What book or books would you reccomend?
