• Grails/Compass question - How can I change the compqass Connection to point to a different directory

  Hi, I use the Searchable plugin with Grails I have the need to change the directory to which Compass points to, depending upon a UI choice by the user. Normally, this value is set in the compassConnection variable of the searchable map in grails-app/conf/Searchable.groovy, like so, and gets called at app startup time: searchable { compassConnection = new File( "/path/to/index/file/directory" ).absolutePath ... } To do what I need to do, I think that I need to get a handle into the compass config variable and then call config.setConnection("/new/path/to/index/dir") I don't know how I can get a reference to the config compass variable Am I right in assuming that I need to call setConnection(String) only, or is(are) there any other step(s) I need to take? Really appreciate any help that I can get, Shailen

• Liquid templates - accessing members by name

  I'm using Jekyll to create a new blog. It uses Liquid underneath. Jekyll defines certain "variables": site, content, page, post and paginator. These "variables" have several "members". For instance, post.date will return the date of a post, while post.url will return its url. My question is: can I access a variable's member using another variable as the member name? See the following example: {% if my_condition %} {% assign name = 'date' %} {% else %} {% assign name = 'url' %} {% endif %} I have a variable called name which is either 'date' or 'url'. How can I make the liquid equivalent of post[name] in ruby? The only way I've found is using a for loop to iterate over all the pairs (key-value) of post. Beware! It is quite horrible: {% for property in post %} {% if property[0] == name %} {{ property[1] }} {% endif %} {% endfor %} Argh! I hope there is a better way. Thanks.

• Will the following code be Garbage Collected before the class "dies"?

  Let's say we have the following code in a class: //class code TextBox t = new TextBox(); ListBox l = new ListBox(); We have then two possible situations: In the first, we declare qem1 as a class variable(or attribute, as they call it in the Java World): //class variable QuickEntryMediator qem1 = new QuickEntryMediator(t,l); In the second, we declare it inside a method: //method variable QuickEntryMediator qem2 = new QuickEntryMediator(t,l); So, I'd say qem1 would never be Garbage Collected before the class goes out of scope while in the qem2 might be Garbage Collected at any time after the method in which it resides dies. Is this true? I am looking for answers for both C#(.net) and Java, as am I am not sure both GC's work in the same fashion! Thanks

• How do I flip a column in mysql that has data structured: 'last name, first name'?

  I want to create a new column in a MYSQL table that has Fn Ln instead of Ln, Fn. Most of my data is printed Fn Ln. Another idea is to incorporate a string function each time there is an output (php based) but that seems to waste resources. Finally, I couldn't find the syntax (loop or foreach) for my php function anyway. • Best way to optimize queries like this in Django

  I am trying to lower the amount of queries that my django app is using, but I am a little confused on how to do it. I would like to get a query set with one hit to the database and then filter items from that set. I have tried a couple of things, but I always get queries for each set. let's say I want to get all names from my DB, but also separate out the people just named Ted. Both the names and the ted set will be used in the template. This will give me two sets, one with all names and one with Ted.. but also hits the database twice: namelist = People.objects.all() tedList = namelist.filter(name='ted') Is there a way to filter the first set without hitting the data base again?

• Odd compiler error on if-clause without braces

  The following Java code is throwing a compiler error: if ( checkGameTitle(currGame) ) ArrayList<String> items = parseColumns( tRows.get(rowOffset+1), currGame, time, method ); checkGameTitle is a public static function, returning a boolean. The errors are all of the type "cannot find symbol" with the symbols being variable ArrayList, variable String and variable items. However, if I add {curly braces} then the code compiles with no errors. Why might this be? Is there some ambiguity on the if clause without them?

• MSI Install Folder Composed with Value from Radio Dialog

  I'm using .NET2, I have an installer project. In the User Interface, I've created a RadioButtons (3 Buttons) dialog box. I've placed it before the Installation Folder Dialog. I wish to incorporate the value selected in the RadioButtons dialog as part of the Installation Folder. To do this I've placed the name of the variable amongst the path where I wish to use it in the DefaultLocation: [ProgramFilesFolder][Manufacturer]\[ProductName]\[BUTTON3] The effect of this is that the default value for the variable, BUTTON3 in the example above, is resolved as part of the folder, not the selected value. Anybody know how to make this variable use delayed expansion in some way to get the selected value?

• Redirect Output of Capistrano

  I have a Capistrano deploy file (Capfile) that is rather large, contains a few namespaces and generally has a lot of information already in it. My ultimate goal is, using the Tinder gem, paste the output of the entire deployment into Campfire. I have Tinder setup properly already. I looked into using the Capistrano capture method, but that only works for the first host. Additionally that would be a lot of work to go through and add something like: output << capture 'foocommand' Specifically, I am looking to capture the output of any deployment from that file into a variable (in addition to putting it to STDOUT so I can see it), then pass that output in the variable into a function called notify_campfire. Since the notify_campfire function is getting called at the end of a task (every task regardless of the namespace), it should have the task name available to it and the output (which is stored in that output variable). Any thoughts on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

  What is the format string modifier for char-as-number? I want to read in a number never exceeding 255 (actually much less) into an unsigned char type variable using sscanf. Using the typical char source[] = "x32"; char separator; unsigned char dest; int len; len = sscanf(source,"%c%d",&separator,&dest); // validate and proceed... I'm getting the expected warning: argument 4 of sscanf is type char*, int* expected. As I understand the specs, there is no modifier for char (like %sd for short, or %lld for 64-bit long) is it dangerous? (will overflow just overflow (roll-over) the variable or will it write outside the allocated space?) is there a prettier way to achieve that than allocating a temporary int variable? ...or would you suggest an entirely different approach altogether?

This will be in a template and I would like to pass part of the xpath as a parameter. <xsl:variable name="TEST_VAR">"h:elementA/elementB"</xsl:variable> ... and then use the variable (or passed in param) as all (or part) of the xpath: <xsl:element name="transformedElement"><xsl:value-of select=$TEST_VAR/></xsl:element> I would really like to have the xpath to be a mixture of string literals and the vlue of TEST_VAR. • Does Resharper 4.1 support both Camel Humps and normal selection modes?

  I've found the setting for Camel Humps in resharper: Resharper - Options - Editor - Use CamelHumps The problem is that I would still like to be able to use the normal selection mode (i.e. the default behaviour for CTRL+Arrow and CTRL+SHIFT+Arrow) as well as the CamelHumps mode. For example consider this variable: private int MyVeryLongCamelCaseName; Now if I want to copy the entire variable then I want the VS default behaviour for CTRL+SHIFT+Left-Arrow which is to select the entire variable if the cursor is on the M. However if I want to change the name to say MyExtremelyLongCamelCaseName then I would like the CamelHumps behaviour provided by Resharper. Is there any way to have both behaviours with different shortcuts?

  I am trying to implement a linux shell that supports piping. I have already done simple commands, commands running in background, redirections, but piping is still missing. I have already read about it and seen some snippets of code, but still haven't been able to sort out a working solution. What I have so far: int fd[2]; pid_t pid = fork(); if (pid == -1) return -1; if (pid == 0) { dup2(0, fd[0]); execlp("sort", "sort", NULL); } I am a novice programmer, as you can probably tell, and when I am programming something I don't know much about, this being obviously the case, I like to start with something really easy and concrete and then build from there. So, before being able to implement three and more different commands in pipeline, I would like to be able to compute "ls names.txt | sort" or something similiar, in which names.txt is a file of names alfabetically unordered. • Static Class Variables in Dynamic Library and Main Program

  I am working on a project that has a class 'A' that contains a static stl container class. This class is included in both my main program and a .so file. The class uses the default(implicit, not declared) constructor/destructor. The main program loads the .so file using dlopen() and in its destructor, calls dlclose(). The program crashes after main exits when glibc calls the destructor for the static class member variable. The problem appears to be that when dlclose() is called, the destructor for the static variable is called, then when main exits() glibc also calls the destructor, resulting in a double free. I have 2 questions, namely: 1) In this particular case, why are there not two copies of the static variable(yes i know that sounds somewhat ridiculous, but since both the main program and .so file have a separately compiled 'A', shouldn't they each have one?) 2) Is there any way to resolve this issue without re-writing class 'A' to not contain static member variables?

  I'm using Qt and have some real basic problems. I have created my own widget MyTest that have a variable obj. I need to set this variable obj from an object outside of the widget so that the variable is copied not just a pointer to another object. I get an error message and can't figure out how to do this basic stuff. • Problem with eastern european characters when scraping data from the European Parliaments Website

  Dear Experts I am trying to scrape a lot of data from the European Parliament website for a research project. Ther first step is the create a list if all parliamentarians, however due to the many Eastern European names and the accents they use i get a lot of missing entries. Here is an example of what is giving me troubles (notice the accents at the end of the family name): ANDRIKIENE, Laima Liucija Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) So far I have been using PyParser and the following code: parser_names name = Word(alphanums + alphas8bit) begin, end = map(Suppress, "<") names = begin + ZeroOrMore(name) + "," + ZeroOrMore(name) + end for name in names.searchString(page): print(name) However this does not catch the name from the html above. • Referencing Environment Variables in web.xml

  I'm pre-packaging a JSP web-app that relies on some file path settings found within web.xml. These settings are unknown at packaging time, because they reference a path the customer will set when deploying the entire application (of which the web-app is a management interface). It seems that the easiest way to avoid tokens and file modifications in my installer script, is to ask the user for an install location, set this location as an environment variable (e.g JAVA_HOME), and have web.xml always reference that variable. Is there a way to reference an environment variable value from within web.xml? Google searches lead to the J2EE method of SETTING environment variables from ejb xml files. This is not what I'm looking for. Thanks Udi

• Verify my form workflow

  I have a form, with some sensitive info (CC numbers). My work flow is: One page to take all form items Upon submission, values are validated. If all is well, all data is stored in a session variable, and the page reloads and displays this info from the session variable. If everything is ok on the review page, the user clicks submit and the session variable is sent to another form for processing (sending payment). Upon success, the session is destroyed. Upon failure (bad CC number, for example) - the user is sent back to the form, with all of the fields filled in just like before, so that they can check for errors and try again (session is NOT destroyed). Does anyone see anything wrong with this, from a security or best practices stand point? UPDATE I'm thinking I can get rid of a step - storing the info in a session EVER. Just have a one page checkout, no review page... makes sense.

  Dear All, I have the following problem. I have a table in a db, with many columns. I can do different kind of select queries, to show, for example, for each record that satisfies a condition: all cells from columns with names ending in _t0 all cells from columns with names ending in _t1 ... To get the column lists to form the queries I use the information schema. Now, the problem: each query returns a record with a subset of the columns of the big table. This means that I can get a row of (all!) NULLs. How can I ask my query to reject such rows without having to type in explicitely the column names (i.e. by saying where col_1 is not null, col_2 is not null...)? Is it possible? Thanks in advance!!! • Mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1

  All, I'm using mapped Stored Procedures in EF 1. I've completed the following steps: 1) I've created my INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE queries in SQL Server. 2) I've built the EDMX and imported the INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs as part of my model. 3) I've set up a Stored Procedure Mapping on a table inside of my EDMX file. The INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE sprocs were mapped accordingly. Using this approach, I would expect to rebuild the application (and mine builds successfully) and then see the Stored Procedures as available function names via my EDMX object, such as: _entities.InsertComment(..), _entities.UpdateComment(..), and _entities.DeleteComment(..) Intellisense is not picking these names up and I can't figure out why. If I perform these same steps using EF4, the function names are automatically picked up by Intellisense after adding the Stored Procedure Mappings. Is this a bug in EF1? Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks in advance, Mike

To my understanding, both describe the parts of a program in which a variable/object/method/function will be accessible. I understand that 'scope' tends to be a property of the variable (e.g., "This variable has global scope"), while a 'namespace' is a property of the program (e.g., "A Python function creates a local namespace"). Are there other differences? Global scope vs global namespace addresses a slightly narrower question: global namespaces in C++. http://www.alan-g.me.uk/tutor/tutname.htm states, There are a few very subtle differences between the terms but only a Computer Scientist pedant would argue with you, and for our purposes namespace and scope are identical.   What's a better way to traverse an array while iterating through another array? For example, if I have two arrays like the following: names = [ "Rover", "Fido", "Lassie", "Calypso"] breeds = [ "Terrier", "Lhasa Apso", "Collie", "Bulldog"] Assuming the arrays correspond with one another - that is, Rover is a Terrier, Fido is a Lhasa Apso, etc. - I'd like to create a dog class, and a new dog object for each item: class Dog attr_reader :name, :breed def initialize(name, breed) @name = name @breed = breed end end I can iterate through names and breeds with the following: index = 0 names.each do |name| dog = Dog.new("#{name}", "#{breeds[index]}") index = index.next end However, I get the feeling that using the index variable is the wrong way to go about it. What would be a better way?

• jquery load links not clickable

  ok i am loading a separate page with links in it, into a page named index.php. it loads fine, but when i click one of the links inside the loaded content, nothing happens. they dont act as links. but if i do a alert('hi'); after the load('page.html'); then it will work. any ideas on getting this to work without alerting something after it loads? oh also i cant use a callback, unless there is a way to update the get variable because the page loading, has a $_GET variable, and the links inside the loaded page are supposed to update the $_GET variable. anyways is there a way to make the links clickable after loading the page?

• Piping to findstr's input, dos prompt

  I have a text file with a list of macro names (one per line). My final goal is to get a print of how many times the macro's name appears in the files of the current directory. The macro's names are in C:\temp\macros.txt. type C:\temp\macros.txt in the dos prompt prints the list alright. Now I want to pipe that output to the standard input of findstr. type C:\temp\macros.txt | findstr *.ss (ss is the file type where I am looking for the macro names). This does not seem to work, I get no result (very fast, it does not seem to try at all). findstr <the first row of the macro list> *.ss does work. I also tried findstr *.ss < c:\temp\macros.txt with no success.
