• JavaOne 2012 - The Power of Java 7 NIO.2

  At JavaOne 2012, Mohamed Taman of e-finance gave a presentation highlighting the power of NIO.2, the file I/O APIs introduced in JDK 7. He shared information on how to get the most out of NIO.2, gave tips on migrating your I/O code to NIO.2, and presented case studies. The File I/O (featuring NIO.2) lesson in the Java Tutorials has extensive coverage of NIO.2 and includes the following topics: Managing Metadata Walking the File Tree Finding Files, including information on using PatternMatcher and globs.   Megjelent és letöltheto az Oracle Enterprise Manager 11gR1. Remélem az olvasók közül többen látták már a bejelentés videóját. Aki lemaradt volna róla bepótolhatja itt. Az új verzió számos újdonságot tartalmaz, melyek röviden összefoglalva az alábbiak: Eloször is az új verzió célja az alkalmazások üzemeltetése üzleti szemszögbol (Business Driven Application Management). A hagyományos komponens alapú rendszer menedzsment megközelítése egyszeruen nem állja meg a helyét az mai IT világában. Ezzel szemben a Business Driven Application Management segíti az üzemeltetoket, hogy az üzletet a leheto leghatékonyabban szolgálják ki, aminek eredményeképp az üzleti eredmények a legoptimálisabban alakulhatnak. A Business Driven Application Management elérése érdekében a 11gR1 a 10g-ben már elérheto végfelhasználói élmény monitorozásra épít. Ezzel a képességgel az IT sokkal jobban megérti, hogy a felhasználók hogyan használják az alkalmazásokat és eközben mit tapasztalnak. Ezt kiegészítve az új verzió fejlettebb üzleti tranzakció menedzsment képességekkel rendelkezik, ezáltal könnyebbé és gyorsabbá teszi a felhasználók számára problémát jelento tranzakciók javítását. Másodsorban az új verzió az alkalmazástól a diszk rétegig (Integrated Application-to-Disk Management) támogatja az üzemeltetést. Mivel minden egyes réteg képes befolyásolni a felhasználói élményt, ezért amint a felhasználókat érinto probléma detektálásra kerül, szükséges az érintett réteg részletes diagnosztikája, elemzése. Az Oracle Enterprise Manager 11gR1 natív támogatást ad az Oracle Database 11gR2, Exadata V2 és Fusion Middleware 11g termékekre. Az összetett alkalmazások menedzsmentjét támogató JVM Diagnosztika és Composite Application Monitoring and Modeler immár szerves részét képezik az új verziónak. Sot, az Enterprise Manager Grid Control és az Enterprise Manager Ops Center elso integrációs lépcsoje is elkészült, így a hardver szintu események is központilag monitorozhatók a Grid Control felületérol. • Configuring Multiple Instances of MySQL in Solaris 11

  Recently someone asked me for steps to configure multiple instances of MySQL database in an Operating Platform. Coz of my familiarity with Solaris OE, I prepared some notes on configuring multiple instances of MySQL database on Solaris 11. Maybe it's useful for some: If you want to run Solaris Operating System (or any other OS of your choice) as a virtualized instance in desktop, consider using Virtual Box. To download Solaris Operating System, click here. Once you have your Solaris Operating System (Version 11) up and running and have Internet connectivity to gain access to the Image Packaging System (IPS), please follow the steps as mentioned below to install MySQL and configure multiple instances: 1. Install MySQL Database in Solaris 11 $ sudo pkg install mysql-51 2. Verify if the mysql is installed: $ svcs -a | grep mysql Note: Service FMRI will look similar to the one here: svc:/application/database/mysql:version_51 3. Prepare data file system for MySQL Instance 1 zfs create rpool/mysql zfs create rpool/mysql/data zfs set mountpoint=/mysql/data rpool/mysql/data 4. Prepare data file system for MySQL Instance 2 zfs create rpool/mysql/data2 zfs set mountpoint=/mysql/data rpool/mysql/data2 5. Change the mysql/datadir of the MySQL Service (SMF) to point to /mysql/data $ svcprop mysql:version_51 | grep mysql/data $ svccfg -s mysql:version_51 setprop mysql/data=/mysql/data 6. Create a new instance of MySQL 5.1 (a) Copy the manifest of the default instance to temporary directory: $ sudo cp /lib/svc/manifest/application/database/mysql_51.xml /var/tmp/mysql_51_2.xml (b) Make appropriate modifications on the XML file $ sudo vi /var/tmp/mysql_51_2.xml - Change the "instance name" section to a new value "version_51_2" - Change the value of property name "data" to point to the ZFS file system "/mysql/data2" 7. Import the manifest to the SMF repository: $ sudo svccfg import /var/tmp/mysql_51_2.xml 8. Before starting the service, copy the file /etc/mysql/my.cnf to the data directories /mysql/data & /mysql/data2. $ sudo cp /etc/mysql/my.cnf /mysql/data/ $ sudo cp /etc/mysql/my.cnf /mysql/data2/ 9. Make modifications to the my.cnf in each of the data directories as required: $ sudo vi /mysql/data/my.cnf Under the [client] section port=3306 socket=/tmp/mysql.sock ---- ---- Under the [mysqld] section port=3306 socket=/tmp/mysql.sock datadir=/mysql/data ----- ----- server-id=1 $ sudo vi /mysql/data2/my.cnf Under the [client] section port=3307 socket=/tmp/mysql2.sock ----- ----- Under the [mysqld] section port=3307 socket=/tmp/mysql2.sock datadir=/mysql/data2 ----- ----- server-id=2 10. Make appropriate modification to the startup script of MySQL (managed by SMF) to point to the appropriate my.cnf for each instance: $ sudo vi /lib/svc/method/mysql_51 Note: Search for all occurences of mysqld_safe command and modify it to include the --defaults-file option. An example entry would look as follows: ${MySQLBIN}/mysqld_safe --defaults-file=${MYSQLDATA}/my.cnf --user=mysql --datadir=${MYSQLDATA} --pid=file=${PIDFILE} 11. Start the service: $ sudo svcadm enable mysql:version_51_2 $ sudo svcadm enable mysql:version_51 12. Verify that the two services are running by using: $ svcs mysql 13. Verify the processes: $ ps -ef | grep mysqld 14. • Frank Ludolph's Last Day at Work

  Hi Frank, today is your last day at Oracle. I cannot belief that retirement is an alternative to designing software and improving products for decades. I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? • SBUG Session: The Enterprise Cache

The proposal was for a dedicated caching layer which all app servers and service providers can hook into, sharing resources and common data. The architecture might end up like this: I'll update this post with a link to the slide deck once it's available. Synopsis Looked at the benefits and drawbacks of app-centric isolated caches, compared to an enterprise-wide shared cache running on dedicated nodes; Suggested issues and risks around caching including staleness of data, resource usage, performance and testing; Walked through a generic service cache implemented as a WCF behaviour – suitable for IIS- or BizTalk-hosted services - which I'll be releasing on CodePlex shortly; Listed common options for cache providers and their offerings. Discussion Cache usage. Different value propositions for utilising the cache: improved performance, isolation from underlying systems (e.g. service output caching can have a TTL large enough to cover downtime), reduced resource impact – CPU, memory, SQL and cost (e.g. caching results of paid-for services). Dedicated cache nodes. Preferred over in-host caching provided latency is acceptable. Depending on cache provider, can offer easy scalability and global replication so cache clients always use local nodes. Restriction of AppFabric Caching to Windows Server 2008 not viewed as a concern. Security. Limited security model in most cache providers. Options for securing cache content suggested as custom implementations. Obfuscating keys and serialized values may mean additional security is not needed. Depending on security requirements and architecture, can ensure cache servers only accessible to cache clients via IPsec. Staleness. Generally thought to be an overrated problem. Thinking in line with eventual consistency, that serving up stale data may not be a significant issue. Good technical arguments support this, although I suspect business users will be harder to persuade. Providers. Positive feedback for AppFabric Caching – speed, configurability and richness of the distributed model making it a good enterprise choice. .NET port of memcached well thought of for performance but lack of replication makes it less suitable for these shared scenarios. Replicated fork – repcached – untried and less active than memcached. NCache also well thought of, but Express version too limited for enterprise scenarios, and commercial versions look costly compared to AppFabric.

• Deploying Data Mining Models using Model Export and Import

  In this post, we'll take a look at how Oracle Data Mining facilitates model deployment. After building and testing models, a next step is often putting your data mining model into a production system -- referred to as model deployment. The ability to move data mining model(s) easily into a production system can greatly speed model deployment, and reduce the overall cost. Since Oracle Data Mining provides models as first class database objects, models can be manipulated using familiar database techniques and technology. For example, one or more models can be exported to a flat file, similar to a database table dump file (.dmp). This file can be moved to a different instance of Oracle Database EE, and then imported. All methods for exporting and importing models are based on Oracle Data Pump technology and found in the DBMS_DATA_MINING package. Before performing the actual export or import, a directory object must be created. A directory object is a logical name in the database for a physical directory on the host computer. Read/write access to a directory object is necessary to access the host computer file system from within Oracle Database. For our example, we'll work in the DMUSER schema. First, DMUSER requires the privilege to create any directory. This is often granted through the sysdba account. grant create any directory to dmuser; Now, DMUSER can create the directory object specifying the path where the exported model file (.dmp) should be placed. In this case, on a linux machine, we have the directory /scratch/oracle. CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY dmdir AS '/scratch/oracle'; If you aren't sure of the exact name of the model or models to export, you can find the list of models using the following query: select model_name from user_mining_models; There are several options when exporting models. We can export a single model, multiple models, or all models in a schema using the following procedure calls: BEGIN   DBMS_DATA_MINING.EXPORT_MODEL ('MY_MODEL.dmp','dmdir','name =''MY_DT_MODEL'''); END; BEGIN   DBMS_DATA_MINING.EXPORT_MODEL ('MY_MODELS.dmp','dmdir',              'name IN (''MY_DT_MODEL'',''MY_KM_MODEL'')'); END; BEGIN   DBMS_DATA_MINING.EXPORT_MODEL ('ALL_DMUSER_MODELS.dmp','dmdir'); END; A .dmp file can be imported into another schema or database using the following procedure call, for example: BEGIN   DBMS_DATA_MINING.IMPORT_MODEL('MY_MODELS.dmp', 'dmdir'); END; As with models from any data mining tool, when moving a model from one environment to another, care needs to be taken to ensure the transformations that prepare the data for model building are matched (with appropriate parameters and statistics) in the system where the model is deployed. Oracle Data Mining provides automatic data preparation (ADP) and embedded data preparation (EDP) to reduce, or possibly eliminate, the need to explicitly transport transformations with the model. In the case of ADP, ODM automatically prepares the data and includes the necessary transformations in the model itself. In the case of EDP, users can associate their own transformations with attributes of a model. These transformations are automatically applied when applying the model to data, i.e., scoring. Exporting and importing a model with ADP or EDP results in these transformations being immediately available with the model in the production system.

• BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) tools for .Net

  For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the formalism "When Given Then". This formalism is used in all tools dedicated to BDD. • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

  Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

• IT Optimization Plan Pays Off For UK Retailer

  I caught this article in ComputerworldUK yesterday. The headline talks about UK-based supermarket chain Morrisons is increasing their IT spend...OK, sounds good. Even nicer that Oracle is a big part of that. But what caught my eye were three things: 1) Morrison's truly has a long term strategy for IT. In this case, modernizing and optimizing how they use IT for business advantage.   2) Even in a tough economic climate, Morrison's views IT investments as contributing to and improving the bottom line. Specifically, "The investment in IT contributed to a 21 percent increase in Morrison's underlying profit.."   3) The phased, 3-year "Optimization Plan" took a holistic approach to their business--from CRM and Supply Chain systems to the underlying application infrastructure. On the infrastructure front, adopting a more flexible Service-Oriented Architecture enabled them to be more agile and adapt their business and Identity Management helped with sometimes mundane (but costly) issues like lost passwords and being able to document who has access to what.   Things don't always turn out so rosy. And I know it was a long and difficult process...but it's nice to see a happy ending every once in a while.

• C#: Does an IDisposable in a Halted Iterator Dispose?

  If that sounds confusing, let me give you an example. Let's say you expose a method to read a database of products, and instead of returning a List<Product> you return an IEnumerable<Product> in iterator form (yield return). This accomplishes several good things: The IDataReader is not passed out of the Data Access Layer which prevents abstraction leak and resource leak potentials. You don't need to construct a full List<Product> in memory (which could be very big) if you just want to forward iterate once. If you only want to consume up to a certain point in the list, you won't incur the database cost of looking up the other items. I will say, though, that I'm a big fan of using the System.Data.Common classes instead of your provider specific counterparts directly (SqlCommand, OracleCommand, etc). This lets you mock your data sources easily in unit testing and also allows you to swap out your provider in one line of code. In fact, one of the shared components I'm most proud of implementing was our group's DatabaseUtility library that simplifies all the database access above into one line of code in a thread-safe and provider-neutral way. I went with my own flavor instead of the EL due to the fact I didn't want to force internal company consumers to use the EL if they didn't want to, and it made it easy to allow them to mock their database for unit testing by providing a MockCommand, MockConnection, etc that followed the System.Data.Common model. One of these days I'll blog on that if anyone's interested. Regardless, you often have situations like the above where you are consuming and iterating through a resource that must be closed once you are finished iterating. For the reasons stated above, I didn't want to return IDataReader (that would force them to remember to Dispose it), and I didn't want to return List<Product> (that would force them to hold all products in memory) -- but the first time I wrote this, I was worried. What if you never consume the last item and exit the loop? Are the reader, command, and connection all disposed correctly? Of course, I was 99.999999% sure the creators of C# had already thought of this and taken care of it, but inspection in Reflector was difficult due to the nature of the state machines yield return generates, so I decided to try a quick example program to verify whether or not Dispose() will be called when an iterator is broken from outside the iterator itself -- i.e. before the iterator reports there are no more items. So I wrote a quick Sequencer class with a Dispose() method and an iterator for it. Yes, it is COMPLETELY contrived: 1: // A disposable sequence of int -- yes this is completely contrived... 2: internal class Sequencer : IDisposable 3: { 4: private int _i = 0; 5: private readonly object _mutex = new object(); 6:  7: // Constructs an int sequence. 8: public Sequencer(int start) 9: { 10: _i = start; 11: } 12:  13: // Gets the next integer 14: public int GetNext() 15: { 16: lock (_mutex) 17: { 18: return _i++; 19: } 20: } 21:  22: // Dispose the sequence of integers. 23: public void Dispose() 24: { 25: // force output immediately (flush the buffer) 26: Console.WriteLine("Disposed with last sequence number of {0}!", _i); 27: Console.Out.Flush(); 28: } 29: } And then I created a generator (infinite-loop iterator) that did the using block for auto-Disposal: 1: // simply defines an extension method off of an int to start a sequence 2: public static class SequencerExtensions 3: { 4: // generates an infinite sequence starting at the specified number 5: public static IEnumerable<int> GetSequence(this int starter) 6: { 7: // note the using here, will call Dispose() when block terminated. 8: using (var seq = new Sequencer(starter)) 9: { 10: // infinite loop on this generator, means must be bounded by caller! 11: while(true) 12: { 13: yield return seq.GetNext(); 14: } 15: } 16: } 17: } This is really the same conundrum as the database problem originally posed. Here we are using iteration (yield return) over a large collection (infinite sequence of integers). If we cut the sequence short by breaking iteration, will that using block exit and hence, Dispose be called? Well, let's see: 1: // The test program class 2: public class IteratorTest 3: { 4: // The main test method. 5: public static void Main() 6: { 7: Console.WriteLine("Going to consume 10 of infinite items"); 8: Console.Out.Flush(); 9:  10: foreach(var i in 0.GetSequence()) 11: { 12: // could use TakeWhile, but wanted to output right at break... 13: if(i >= 10) 14: { 15: Console.WriteLine("Breaking now!"); 16: Console.Out.Flush(); 17: break; 18: } 19:  20: Console.WriteLine(i); 21: Console.Out.Flush(); 22: } 23:  24: Console.WriteLine("Done with loop."); 25: Console.Out.Flush(); 26: } 27: } So, what do we see? Do we see the "Disposed" message from our dispose, or did the Dispose get skipped because from an "eyeball" perspective we should be locked in that infinite generator loop? Here's the results: 1: Going to consume 10 of infinite items 2: 0 3: 1 4: 2 5: 3 6: 4 7: 5 8: 6 9: 7 10: 8 11: 9 12: Breaking now! 13: Disposed with last sequence number of 11! 14: Done with loop. Yes indeed, when we break the loop, the state machine that C# generates for yield iterate exits the iteration through the using blocks and auto-disposes the IDisposable correctly. I must admit, though, the first time I wrote one, I began to wonder and that led to this test. If you've never seen iterators before (I wrote a previous entry here) the infinite loop may throw you, but you have to keep in mind it is not a linear piece of code, that every time you hit a "yield return" it cedes control back to the state machine generated for the iterator. And this state machine, I'm happy to say, is smart enough to clean up the using blocks correctly. I suspected those wily guys and gals at Microsoft engineered it well, and I wasn't disappointed. But, I've been bitten by assumptions before, so it's good to test and see. Yes, maybe you knew it would or figured it would, but isn't it nice to know? And as those campy 80s G.I. • Backpacks and Booth Paint: TechEd 2012

  Arriving in the parking lot of the Orange County Convention Center, I immediately knew I was in the right place. As far as the eye could see, the acres of asphalt were awash in backpacks, quirky (to be kind) outfits, and bad haircuts. This was the place. This was Microsoft Mecca v2012 for geeks and nerds, the Central Florida event of the year, a gathering of high tech professionals whose skills I both greatly respect and, frankly, fear a little. I was wholly and completely out of element, a dork in a vast sea of geek jumbo. It like was wearing dockers and a golf shirt walking into a RenFaire, but one with really crappy costumes and no turkey legs...save those attached to some of the attendees. Of course the corporate whores...errrr, vendors were in place, ready to parlay the convention's fre-nerd-ic energy into millions of dollars by convincing the big-brained and under-sexed in the crowd (i.e., virtually all of them...present company excluded, of course) that their product or service was the only thing standing between them and professional success, industry fame, and clear skin. "With KramTech 2012," they seemed to scream, "you will be THE ROCK STAR of your company's IT department!" As car shows and tattoo parlors learned long ago, Tech companies seem to believe that the best way to attract the attention of this crowd is through the hint of the promise of sex. They recruit and deploy an army of "sales reps" whose primary qualifications appear to be long hair, short skirts, high heels, and a vagina. Unlike their distant cousins in the car and body art industries, however, this sub-species of booth paint (semi-gloss decoration that adds nothing to the substance of the product) seems torn between committing to being all-out sex objects and recognition that they are in the presence of intelligent, discerning people. People who are smart enough to know exactly what these vendors are doing. Also unlike their distant car show and tattoo shop cousins, these young women (what…are there no gay tech professionals who could use some eye candy?) seem to realize that while IT remains a male-dominated field, there are ever-increasing numbers of intelligent, capable, strong professional women – women who’ve battled to make it in this field through hard work and work performance rather than a hard body and performing after work. This is not to say that all of the young female sales reps are there only because of their physical attributes. Many are competent, intelligent, and driven -- not to mention attractive. They're working hard on the front lines of delivering the next generation of technology. The distinction is pretty clear, however, between these young professionals and the booth paint. The former enthusiastically deliver credible information about the products they’re hawking. The latter are positioned in the aisles, uncomfortably avoiding eye contact as they struggle to operate the badge readers. Surprisingly, not all of the women in attendance seemed to object to the objectification of their younger sisters. One IT professional woman who came of age in the industry (mostly in IT marketing) said, “I have no problem with it. I was a ‘booth babe’ for years and it doesn’t bother me at all.” Others, however, weren’t quite so gracious. One woman I spoke with, an IT manager from Cheyenne, Wyoming, said it was demeaning and frankly, as more and more women grow into IT management positions, not a great marketing idea. “Using these young women is, to me, no different than vendors giving out t-shirts to attract attention. It’s sad because it’s still hard for a woman to be respected in the IT field and this just perpetuates the outdated notion that IT is a male-dominated field.” She went on to say that decisions by vendors to employ these young women in this “inappropriate way” could impact her purchasing decisions. “I might be swayed toward a vendor who has women on staff who are intelligent and dynamic rather than the vendors who use the ‘decoration’ girls.” So in many ways, the IT industry is no different than most other industries as it struggles to maximize performance by finding and developing talent – all of the talent, not just the 50% with a penis. Women in IT, like their brethren, struggle to find their niche in the field, to grow professionally, and reach for the brass ring, struggling to overcome obstacles as they climb the mountain of professional success in a never-ending cycle of economic uncertainty. But as (generally) well-educated and highly-trained professionals, they are probably better positioned than those in many other industries. Beside, they’ve got one other advantage over their non-IT counterparts as they attempt their ascent to the summit: They’ve already got the backpacks.

Da ist für jeden Kunden was dabei. Die Oracle Optimized Solutions unserer VADs waren ein weiteres wichtiges Thema, speziell für den Mittelstand, über das wir auch hier im Blog berichtet haben. Für ISVs wurden die Exastack Ready und Exastack Optimized Programme entwickelt. Speziell für Partner wurden Partner Sales Books zu den Fokus-Themen, wie beispielsweise Cloud Computing, erstellt. Im OPN stehen Ihnen mehr als 30 deutschsprachige Marketing-Kits zur Verfügung, um Sie bei der täglichen Vertriebsarbeit zu unterstützen. Und mit dem überarbeiteten und erweiterten Solutions Catalog im OPN können Sie von Endkunden ganz einfach nach Ihrem Lösungsangebot gefunden werden.
