Currently we use Offline NT Password & Registry Editor for machines we do not have admin passwords for. It is a really nice tool but has some flaws. Is there something better/more modern?
I've heard people talking about full drive or partition encryption for laptops and desktops alike, and they consistently put down Microsoft's BitLocker. What is wrong with bitlocker, and is Truecrypt really that much better?
I've been using Coda recently. It's a great program, but overkill for just a multi session Mac terminal app. Know of a better alternative, especially with a command snippet library function?
I 'm going to purchase new PC. due to my budget limit either i can purchase 2 x 2GB = 4GB DDR 2 or 2 GB Single stick DDR 3.
Will 2 GB DDR 3 will give almost same performane compare to 4 GB DDR 2?
In future I will upgrade RAM upto 8 GB
Which option would be better for me for now and why?
No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify"
The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail.
I did some googling, and the consensus as:
1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior
2- This problem is likely not fixable.
My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.
What have been less than optimal design choices, that are now (almost) immutable features of the modern PC system, and what constraints led to these choices?
There have been a great many of these. For example the qwerty keyboard is widespread although the Dvorak keyboard might be a better choice. I guess this is something to do with the teletypes that were used as early computer keyboards, which had originally been modified from typewriters.
It is well known that it is possible to configure a DNS server to do a "catch-all" resolving on a single subdomain level, such as *.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x, so that anything.example.com maps to a single IP/CNAME.
However, I need to set up an at least "level-2" wildcard sub-subdomain catch-all wildcard system so that any.thing.example.com or better, item.of.any.level.under.example.com will be resolved to a single IP.
Has anyone got this working?
I've not come across an option on the site itself and I can't find a program for it either.
I have several hundred feeds to follow and recently, I've found many items should be in different folders, more folders should exist for better detail, etc, etc...
Can someone recommend a program.
Based on many online sources, in serving static files, Apache2 will create new thread on every different connection... results in resource hungry
But how about serving PHP through Apache2 (mod_php, MPM worker, etc)? Does apache will also open new thread like serving static files?
(AFAIK, in nginx php-fpm, we can set the max thread, but I dont know how many connection per thread)
I'm planning to use Apache2 in serving PHP, and hope it will be same as nginx PHP-FPM or even better in resource usage and performance.
I'm planning to buy a NAS (network attached storage) box and I've picked the Synology DS209. I want to set up a RAID 1 array and I'm wondering if I should buy a matching pair of hard drives or if it would be better to buy from different manufacturers. I'm concerned that a matching pair would be more likely to fail at the same time.
We're finally rolling out Server 2008 systems and our old IIS6 check looked for IIS.exe, which doesn't appear to be used anymore. Is there a better process name to look for?
We already have network availability checks in place, but having multiple forms of checks like this helps diagnose where not to look.
On my mac I always have an emacs buffer open and occasionally I have to copy content from PowerPoint or Word. Unfortunately, copying to the clipboard and yanking into emacs saves all the ugly formatting (and graphics) from the original document. I only want to paste in the text (and never the formatting). My current solution is to paste into TextWrangler and then repaste into emacs. What's a better way to do this?
I've been bumping my head against Droid's inability to record phone calls hoping against hope that things would improve after the update. Is there any indication that phone recording will work better under 2.1?
Any place that explains why Droids _can't record the phone audio stream? Hardware or OS?
thx
I am somewhat confused what the differences between a softlink, and a hardlink are (on unix).
It seems like a softlink is the same as a shortcut in windows or an alias on Mac OS X. (Can someone confirm this?) Softlinks can link to both directories and files.
I am uncertain of what a hardlink does or if it is useful..
Is it better to use one instead of the other?
Thanks.
Is it better to install a LAMP platform on Linux (Ubuntu) using
sudo aptitude install lamp-server
or by installing each individual component separately?
Why or why not?
Thanks!
I need software that will rip a site via HTTP. It needs to download the images, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as well as organize it in a file system.
Does anyone know of software that does this? Or would I be better off just writing it myself?
Mac OS X's Finder seems to be the equivalent to Windows Explorer. In Windows, I enjoy having multiple instances of Explorer open to move/copy files from one folder in a window, to another folder in another window.
How can I achieve this in Snow Leopard?
I'd like to have shortcut key, as well as a dock icon solution. Or maybe there's a better program than Finder out there that does this?
I have this error from a user, this user can up but no commit. All others user can commit, up, etc.

How do I accurately observe and measure the amount of virtual memory utilization and activity on Linux? I know there is vmstat, but how do I interpret the results? Or, what is better?
I'm working on this emergency open wi-fi network project and it includes a local website (nginx + MySQL). In order to eliminate SPOFs, we're going to setup at least two of everything (server, switch, router, etc.).
This network is thought to work when an earthquake strikes and it's very likely to a server to go to down, if so, we need to be able to boot them up and be operating as soon as possible.
Do any of you know if any linux filesystem would work better than others in this scenario?
I have a few images that have been anti-aliased onto a white background that I want to put on a transparent background. Just selecting it with the -wand tool/fuzzy select tool/select your terminology of choice- and deleting the background tends to leave a ring of off-white pixels around the image, or eat into the image depending on the tolerance setting. Is there some better way to do this, preferably an automatic tool? (I'm on Linux)

I have tried google notebook & evernote free version for notetaking.
I found google notebook has very few features whereas evernote free version is consuming too much memory and sometimes responding very slowly.
Can you folks please suggest if there is any better notetaking tool out there?
Thanks,
Srikanth
