• Anti-virus for windows 7 home premium

  Hi all I have a new laptop with Win 7 Home Premium. this machine came with already installed "MS Security Essentials" anti virus. I've installed on the laptop another protection "Symantec Endpoint Protection". I guess i don't need to have them both, so can you please tell me which one of them will be better so I'll remove the other? thanks!

  As long as my tables were less than 100, MySQL performed reasonably well but when they started to grow to more than a few hundrets, it (MYSQL) has become extremely slow. Now my tables are 1k and are very small and most contain less than 20-30 records. Is there a specific MySQL setting which I should consider, in order for MySQL to perform better with large numbers of tables?

• Best method of transferring files over internet?

  I have a seedbox (running Ubuntu 9.10) at my (parent's) house and will be leaving it there once I go to college this fall. Currently I'm using samba to transfer files between computers, but I was wondering if once I am on my university's network, whether using FTP would be a better option versus samba over a VPN. The files will range from 100 MB to 17 GB, if that matters. Would one be more efficient over the other? Did I forget any other options?

• Is it possible that solid state drives (or any faster drive) will make common applications faster even if they are cached?

  I assumed that solid state drives are insignificant after, say, Firefox is fully brought up and no important disk activity after that is going on. However, I wonder if some kind of 'cached from the disk to the CPU' activity is going on that may make solid state drives (or any faster drive) better. Then again, I suspect that may be depended only on the Bus (or some kind of cache memory drives have). Hrm..

  Does anyone have some comparison data in terms of performance for using in front of Tomcat either Varnish or Apache with mod_jk. I know that AJP connector suppose to be faster than HTTP, but I was thinking that in combination Varnish which is lighter and highly optimized could perform better. There is also the discussion between static resources (which I think will perform faster with Varnish than Apache, even with mod_cache) and dynamic pages.

  I've had the desire to move to Linux for desktop computing for some time, as the OS just suits me, I think, better than Windows. I've not yet moved from Windows for a few reasons: It's used in my workplace.   I'm taking to putting various files in /tmp, and I wondered what the rules on deleting them are? I'm imagining it's different for different distributions, and I'm particularly interested in Ubuntu and Fedora desktop versions. But a nice general way of finding out would be a great thing. Even better would be a nice general way of controlling it! (Something like 'every day at 3 in the morning, delete any /tmp files older than 60 days, but don't clear the directory on reboot')

  I'm planning to set up transactional replication for a 100Gb SQL Server 2008 database. I have the distributor and publisher on the same server, and am using push subscription. Should there be a performance impact on my publisher server when it creates the initial snapshot, and synchronises it with a subscriber? I have some server rules setup which makes certain emails go straight to a custom folder.
