• Webcast Q&A: Hitachi Data Systems Improves Global Web Experiences with Oracle WebCenter

  Last Thursday we had the third webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "Hitachi Data Systems Improves Global Web Experiences with Oracle WebCenter", where customer Sean Mattson from HDS and Rob Vandenberg from Oracle Partner Lingotek shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering Hitachi Data System’s externally facing website and providing a seamless experience for their customers. In case you missed it, here's a recap of the Q&A.   Sean Mattson, Hitachi Data Systems  Q: Did you run into any issues in the deployment of the platform?A: There were some challenges, we were one of the first enterprise ‘on premise’ installations for Lingotek and our WebCenter platform also has a lot of custom features.  There were a lot of iterations and back and forth working with Lingotek at first.  We both helped each other, learned a lot and in the end managed to resolve all issues and roll out a very compelling solution for HDS. Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: Being able to manage and govern the content lifecycle globally and centrally and at the same time enabling the field to update, review and publish the incremental content changes without a lot of touchpoints has helped us streamline and simplify the entire publishing process. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: I wouldn't say resistance as much as skepticism that we could actually deploy an automated and self publishing solution.  Even if a solution is great, adoption of a new process can be a challenge and we are still pursuing our adoption targets.  One of the most important aspects is to include lots of training and support materials and offer as much helpdesk type support as needed to get the field self sufficient and confident in the capabilities of the system.  Rob Vandenberg, Lingotek  Q: Are there any limitations regarding supported languages such as support for French Canadian and Indian languages?A: Lingotek supports all language pairs. Including right to left languages and double byte languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean Q: Is the Lingotek solution integrated with the new 11g release of WebCenter Sites? A: Yes! In fact, Lingotek is the first OVI partner for Oracle WebCenter Sites  Q: Can translation memories help to improve the accuracy of machine translation?A: One of the greatest long term strategic benefits of using Lingotek is the accumulation of translation memories, or past human translations. These TMs can be used to "train" statistical machine translation engines to have higher and higher quality. This virtuous cycle is ongoing and will consistently improve both machine and human translations.  Q: We have existing translation memories from previous work with our translation service provider. Can they be easily imported in to the Lingotek solution for re-use? Q: Yes, Lingotek is standards compliant. We support TM import in both the TMX and XLIFF formats. Q: If we use Lingotek as a service to do our professional translation and also use the Lingotek software solution, do we get the translation memories to give us a means of just translating future adds and changes ourselves? A: Yes, all the data is yours, always. Lingotek can provide both the integrated translation software as well as the professional translation services. All the content and translation memories are yours. Q: Can you give us an example of where community translation has proved to be successful?A: The key word here is community. If you have a community that cares about you, your content, and the rest of the community, then community translation can work for you.   Last week we had the fourth webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "ResCare Solves Content Lifecycle Challenges with Oracle WebCenter", where customer Joe Lichtefeld from ResCare and Wayne Boerger & Doug Thompson from Oracle Partner TEAM Informatics shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering allowing ResCare to solve content lifecycle challenges, reduce compliance and business risks, and increase adoption of intranet as primary business communication tool In case you missed it, here's a recap of the Q&A.   Joe Lichtefeld, ResCare  Q: Did you run into any issues in the deployment of the platform?A: We experienced very few issues when implementing the content management and search functionalities. There were some challenges in determining the metadata structure. We tried to find a fine balance between having enough fields to provide the functionality needed, but trying to limit the impact to the contributing members.  Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: The biggest benefit to date is two-fold. Content on the intranet can be maintained by the individual contributors more timely than in our old process of all requests being updated by IT. The other big benefit is the ability to find the most current version of a document instead of relying on emails and phone calls to track down the "current" version. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: We experienced very little resistance. Most of our community groups were eager to be able to contribute and maintain their information. We had the normal hurdles of training and follow-up training with implementing a new system and process. As our second phase rolled out access to all employees, we have received more positive feedback on the accessibility of information. Wayne Boerger & Doug Thompson, TEAM Informatics Q: Can you integrate multiple repositories with the Google Search Appliance? Yes, the Google Search Appliance is designed to index lots of different repositories, from both public and internal sources. There are included connectors to many repositories, such as SharePoint, databases, file systems, LDAP, and with the TEAM GSA Connector and the Oracle Content Server. And the index for these repositories can be configured into different collections depending on the use cases that each customer has, and really, for each need within a customer environment. Q: How many different filters can you add when the search results are returned? A: Presuming this question is about the filtering on the search results. You can add as many filters as you like and it can be done by collection or any number of other criteria. Most importantly, customers now have the ability to limit the returned content by a set metadata value. Q: With the TEAM Sites Connector, what types of content can you sync? A: There’s really no limit; if it can be checked into the content server, then it is eligible for sync into Sites.  So basically, any digital file that has relevance to a Sites implementation can be checked into the WC Content central repository and then the connector can/will manage it. Q: Using the Connector, are there any limitations around where in Sites that synced content can be used? A: There are no limitations about where it can be used. When setting up your environment to use it, you just need to think through the different destinations on the Sites side that might use the content; that way you’ve got the right information to create the rules needed for the connector.   I just posted this in StackOverflow before I realized that Serverfault existed ... Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone has used STORM Cloud Servers from Liquid Web: https://www.stormondemand.com/cloud-server/ I'm shopping for a new hosting provider for my server that has about 50 'mom & pop' domains on it and finding that webhosting has changed a lot in the last ten years. I feel like I'm trying to buy 100 cellphone plans at once. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  A figura abaixo oferece uma visão geral das possibilidades de monitoramento providas pelo Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), que é uma ferramenta que permite gerenciar a infraestrutura de TI da empresa. Um componente importante da solução é chanado OEM Grid Control. Esse componente permite gerenciar, visualizar e monitorar diversos elementos a partir de uma mesma console. E que elementos podem ser monitorados? No conceito utilizado pelo OEM, os elementos que podem ser monitorados são chamados de Targets, e esses targets envolvem a monitoração de hosts (Windows, Linux, Solaris), Banco de Dados, Middleware, Aplicações Web, Serviços que podem ser customizados pelo administrador, Sistemas e Grupos de targets, além dos aplicativos Oracle. Cada elemento monitorado é ativado através de packs de gerenciamento. Ou seja, há uma série de packs que podem ser adquiridas conforme a necessidade, para permitir a monitoração a partir do próprio OEM Grid Control. Existem packs de monitoramento especiais para banco de dados Oracle, packs de monitoramento para Tomcat, Jboss, WebLogic, SOA Suite, Identity Management. Os plugins permitem o gerenciamento de elementos adicionais, tais como dispositivos de rede, servidores, banco de dados de terceiros (DB2, SQL Server), Vmware, etc. Já os conectores permitem a integração com outros softwares, tais como gerenciadores de requisições de helpdesk, de modo a integrar os alertas gerados pela ferramenta e gerar tickets em ferramentas como CA Service Desk, BMC Remedy e outros. A extensão de funcionalidades é realmente bem vasta. Num próximo post irei comentar sobre o Ops Center, um novo componente que surgiu após a aquisição da Sun. Além do Grid Control e do Ops Center, há outros componentes bem interessantes. A figura abaixo ilustra diversas camadas onde o ferramental Oracle pode ser usado para monitoração. Há uma pack que permite gerenciar os níveis de serviços em todas as camadas ilustradas. Dada uma requisição, pode-se decompor os dados de SLA em cada camada. E há também o Real User Monitoring, que trata de medir a experiência com o usuário. Falarei disso num novo post, mas basicamente a ferramenta permite acompanhar todo o tráfego de rede gerado dos usuários finais até os servidores web, e com isso rastrear como cada usuário usa a aplicação, quanto tempo ele navega pelo site, se ele enfrentou algum tipo de problema, se houve algum pedido não finalizado devido a algum problema na infraestrutura. • AIIM, Oracle and Keste - Talking Social Business in LA

  We had a great event today in Los Angeles - AIIM, Oracle and Keste presented on how organizations are making social business work. Atle Skjekkeland of AIIM presented How Social Business Is Driving Innovation. Atle talked about a number of fascinating points, such as how answers to questions come from unexpected sources. Atle cited the fact that 38% of organizations get half or more of answers from unexpected sources, which speaks to the wisdom of the crowds and how people are benefiting from open communications tools to get answers to their questions. He also had a number of hilarious examples of companies that don't get it. If Comcast were to go to YouTube and search Comcast, they would see the number one hit after their paid ad is a video of one of their technicians asleep on a customer's couch. Seems when he called the office for support he was put on hold so long he fell asleep. Dan O'Leary and Atle Skjekkeland After Atle's presentation I presented on Solving the Innovation Challenge with Oracle WebCenter. Atle had talked about McKinsey's research titled The Rise Of The Networked Enterprise: Web 2.0 Finds Its Payday. I brought in some new McKinsey research that built on that article. The new article is How Social Technologies Are Extending The Organization. A survey of 4,200 Global Executives brought three conclusions for the future: Boundaries among employees, vendors and customers will blur Employee teams will self-organize Data-driven decisions will rise These three items were themes that repeated through the day as we went through examples of what customers are doing today.  Next up was Vince Casarez of Keste. Vince was scheduled to profile one customer, but in an incredible 3 for 1 deal, Vince profiled Alcatel-Lucent, Qualcomm, and NetApp. Each of these implementations had content consolidation elements, as well as user engagement requirements that Keste was able to address with Oracle WebCenter. • Database – Beginning with Cloud Database As A Service

  I love my weekend projects. Everybody does different activities in their weekend – like traveling, reading or just nothing. Every weekend I try to do something creative and different in the database world. The goal is I learn something new and if I enjoy my learning experience I share with the world. This weekend, I decided to explore Cloud Database As A Service – Morpheus. In my career I have managed many databases in the cloud and I have good experience in managing them. I should highlight that today’s applications use multiple databases from SQL for transactions and analytics, NoSQL for documents, In-Memory for caching to Indexing for search.  Provisioning and deploying these databases often require extensive expertise and time.  Often these databases are also not deployed on the same infrastructure and can create unnecessary latency between the application layer and the databases.  Not to mention the different quality of service based on the infrastructure and the service provider where they are deployed. Moreover, there are additional problems that I have experienced with traditional database setup when hosted in the cloud: Database provisioning & orchestration Slow speed due to hardware issues Poor Monitoring Tools High network latency Now if you have a great software and expert network engineer, you can continuously work on above problems and overcome them. However, not every organization have the luxury to have top notch experts in the field. Now above issues are related to infrastructure, but there are a few more problems which are related to software/application as well. Here are the top three things which can be problems if you do not have application expert: Replication and Clustering Simple provisioning of the hard drive space Automatic Sharding Well, Morpheus looks like a product build by experts who have faced similar situation in the past. The product pretty much addresses all the pain points of developers and database administrators. What is different about Morpheus is that it offers a variety of databases from MySQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch to Reddis as a service.  Thus users can pick and chose any combination of these databases.  All of them can be provisioned in a matter of minutes with a simple and intuitive point and click user interface.  The Morpheus cloud is built on Solid State Drives (SSD) and is designed for high-speed database transactions.  In addition it offers a direct link to Amazon Web Services to minimize latency between the application layer and the databases. Here are the few steps on how one can get started with Morpheus. Follow along with me.  First go to http://www.gomorpheus.com and register for a new and free account. Step 1: Signup It is very simple to signup for Morpheus. Step 2: Select your database   I use MySQL for my daily routine, so I have selected MySQL. Upon clicking on the big red button to add Instance, it prompted a dialogue of creating a new instance.   Step 3: Create User Now we just have to create a user in our portal which we will use to connect to a database hosted at Morpheus. Click on your database instance and it will bring you to User Screen. Over here you will notice once again a big red button to create a new user. I created a user with my first name.   Step 4: Configure your MySQL client I used MySQL workbench and connected to MySQL instance, which I had created with an IP address and user.   That’s it! You are connecting to MySQL instance. Now you can create your objects just like you would create on your local box. You will have all the features of the Morpheus when you are working with your database. Dashboard While working with Morpheus, I was most impressed with its dashboard. • HP ProLiant DL980-Oracle TPC-C Benchmark spat

  The Register reported a spat between HP and Oracle on the TPC-C benchmark. Per above, HP submitted a TPC-C result of 3,388,535 tpm-C for their ProLiant DL980 G7 (8 Xeon X7560 processors), with a cost of $0.63 per tpm-C. Oracle has refused permission to publish. Late last year (2010) Oracle published a result of 30M tpm-C for a 108 processors (sockets) SPARC cluster ($30M complete system cost). Oracle is now comparing this to the HP Superdome result from 2007 of 4M tpm-C at $2.93 per tpm-C, calling...(read more)

• Connecting CR 2008 and Oracle database: "TNS file could not be opened"

  I am trying to connect to an Oracle database using CR 2008 drivers for oracle (specifically OLE db driver). When I try to connect I provide the correct connection parameters however I keep getting "TNS file could not be opened" error. I am very confused about this message does this mean I am missing some component? From my understanding the driver should be able to connect. Currently on the computer running Crystal reports there is only has Crystal reports 2008 installed. Do i need to install the oracle instant client on the CR computer in order to make a proper connection? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• Microsoft Cloud Day - the ups and downs

  The term ‘cloud’ can sometimes obscure the obvious.  Today’s Microsoft Cloud Day conference in London provided a good example.  Scott Guthrie was halfway through what was an excellent keynote when he lost network connectivity.  This proved very disruptive to his presentation which centred on a series of demonstrations of the Azure platform in action.  Great efforts were made to find a solution, but no quick fix presented itself.  The venue’s IT facilities were dreadful – no WiFi, poor 3G reception (forget 4G…this is the UK) and, unbelievably, no-one on hand from the venue staff to help with infrastructure issues.  Eventually, after an unscheduled break, a solution was found and Scott managed to complete his demonstrations.  Further connectivity issues occurred during the day. I can say that the cause was prosaic.  A member of the venue staff had interfered with a patch board and inadvertently disconnected Scott Guthrie’s machine from the network by pulling out a cable. I need to state the obvious here.  If your PC is disconnected from the network it can’t communicate with other systems.  This could include a machine under someone’s desk, a mail server located down the hall, a server in the local data centre, an Internet search engine or even, heaven forbid, a role running on Azure. Inadvertently disconnecting a PC from the network does not imply a fundamental problem with the cloud or any specific cloud platform.  Some of the tweeted comments I’ve seen today are analogous to suggesting that, if you accidently unplug your microwave from the mains, this suggests some fundamental flaw with the electricity supply to your house.   This is poor reasoning, to say the least. As far as the conference was concerned, the connectivity issue in the keynote, coupled with some later problems in a couple of presentations, served to exaggerate the perception of poor organisation.   Software problems encountered before the conference prevented the correct set-up of a smartphone app intended to convey agenda information to attendees.  Although some information was available via this app, the organisers decided to print out an agenda at the last moment.  Unfortunately, the agenda sheet did not convey enough information, and attendees were forced to approach conference staff through the day to clarify locations of the various presentations. Despite these problems, the overwhelming feedback from conference attendees was very positive.  There was a real sense of excitement in the morning keynote.  For many, this was their first sight of new Azure features delivered in the ‘spring’ release.  The most common reaction I heard was amazement and appreciation that Azure’s new IaaS features deliver built-in template support for several flavours of Linux from day one.  This coupled with open source SDKs and several presentations on Azure’s support for Java, node.js, PHP, MongoDB and Hadoop served to communicate that the Azure platform is maturing quickly.  The new virtual network capabilities also surprised many attendees, and the much improved portal experience went down very well. So, despite some very irritating and disruptive problems, the event served its purpose well, communicating the breadth and depth of the newly upgraded Azure platform.  I enjoyed the day very much.

• Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. • Getting error when using Oracle imp command to import dmp file

  I am importing a dmp file using the following command: imp user/pass file=file.dmp log=logfile.log full=y ignore=y destroy=y I get the following errors: . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 219638 rows rolled back . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD_ARCHIVES" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 2477960 rows rolled back I have tried increasing the tablespace size and adding a second datafile to no avail. I'm a total newb at Oracle so any help will be appreciated. Googled this for hours and still can't come up with a solution. Thanks!

• How to persist changes to instances in the cloud.

  Hi folks, I must be missing something here, but can someone clue me in on how to persist changes (such as software installs etc) on machines in the cloud (either EC2 or my own Eucalyptus cloud). I have instances running.. can attach extra disks to them etc., but every time I terminate the instance, all of my changes are lost the next time I run them. Now, this sort of makes sense in that the instances are virtual, but, there must be some way to make these changes persist. I'm just missing how its done. Thanks. Peter.

• ORA-1034 Oracle Not Found

  I have recently installed oracle 11g on Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System. I logged in as administrator into windows. I am trying to create a database using DBCA wizard. I started the wizard as administrator. Everything goes fine until last step. However when creating the database the creation fails with ORA-01034 Oracle Not Available error. All my oracle services looks up and running. I consulted the documentation and forums. I have got no clue why I am running into the error.
