  • Unix Server Protection from Physical Access?

    - by Isabella Wilcox
I'm working to license our software to some buyer. Our software will be ran from an unix server that is physically controlled by the buyer. Is there any way to prevent the buyer who have physical access to your server to access contents on the drive? We want to protect our intellectual property because if the buyer steals our software, we won't have enough legal resources to pursue a claim internationally.

  • Benefits of In-house server management vs outsourcing [closed]

    - by Eric Di Bari
I've just created a small web-based company. We're planning on using a cloud hosting solution, but don't have the current resources to properly setup and manage the server. As a new company, are there more benefits to bringing someone on-board as part of the organization to manage the server, versus going with a third-party management company? Such as a greater degree of 'ownership' and involvement?

  • Why is my htaccess file preventing access to my MP3 file?

    - by Andrew
My Zend Framework application has a public directory which contains an htaccess file. If the file isn't found in the public directory, it routes the request through the application. I have an MP3 file within my public directory, but the htaccess file is routing the request through the application! Do you see anything wrong with my htaccess file? AddDefaultCharset utf-8 RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^Resources/.* - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule !\.(js|ico|gif|jpg|png|css|htm|html|php|pdf|doc|txt|swf|xml|mp3)$ /index.php [NC]

  • Resource consumption of FreeBSD's jails

    - by Juan Francisco Cantero Hurtado
Just for curiosity. An example machine: an dedicated amd64 server with the last stable version of FreeBSD and UFS for the partitions. How much resources consume FreeBSD for each empty jail? I mean, I don't want know what is the resource consumption of a jailed server or whatever, just the overhead of each jail. I'm especially interested on CPU, memory and IO. For a few jails the overhead is negligible but imagine a server with 100 jails.

  • What are optimal strategies for using mapreduce and other applications on the same server?

    - by user45532
I have two applications that I need to run continuously to process data. 1.) An app that processes and aggregates information from sources 2.) A mapreduce workflow* that processes the above info I've thought about either getting vps hosting or getting my own inexpensive server and using xen to split the resources of the server. Getting a quad core box with 2 GB of Ram seems a lot cheaper than the grid options I've seen at slicehost, rackspace and others...

  • SSL issues with puppet agent at openSUSE

    - by Roman Grazhdan
I have a master running at my vps, and it has a simple helloworld manifest which works fine with any ubuntu machine I have. It connects, exchanges keys and creates test file allright, so I'm sure it's not server issue. The agent which is running at a virtual machine with openSUSE says: err: Could not request certificate: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed. This is often because the time is out of sync on the server or client I believe it's probably a broken or missing lib, since the package is not built very accurately - it wouldn't start out of the box because of wrong path to lockfile, for example. So how do I figure out what exactly is wrong here? The time is allright, I've checked it. I probably could do without SSL if it's possible, since that SUSE machines are just for training, but it's the last opportunity.

  • MySQL for SQL Server DBAs

    - by SQL3D
I've been tasked with taking over the administration of a MySQL installation (running on Red Hat Linux) that will become fairly critical to our business in the near future. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some resources in regards to administering MySQL for DBAs already experienced with other relational database (SQL Server and some Oracle in my case). Specifically I'm looking for information around disaster recovery as well as high availability to start with, but I do want to get well rounded with the entire system. Thanks in advance, Dan

  • Link two or more text boxes in Visio

    - by Dan
I am working on creating a template in Visio 2007 (Professional). Each page should reflect a document number and a revision number (two text boxes). I would like to make the template such that entering or changing text in one of these boxes on one page will automatically update the equivalent text boxes on all other pages. Is there an easy way to link two (or more) text boxes to show the same data (mirror each other)? I've looked into creating a ShapeData set and then using the ShapeData field in place of each box, but this will require training others to access and adjust the ShapeData field. In short - I want the issue that was attempting to be solved in Changing Text in Visio Org Chart Shape Changes Multiple Shapes' Text .

  • Can I read a smartcard in a virtual machine?

    - by endian
My employer requires a smartcard to login to their web-based remote working platform. I want to access this platform by using a Remote Desktop Connection on to my Windows 7 Virtual Machine, with the smartcard plugged into my home PC. However, whilst I can see the smartcard on my home PC, it doesn't appear in the virtual machine, despite me having "Smart Cards" enabled in the Local Resources page of Remote Desktop Connection. Is it possible to get this working?

  • Technical details for Server 2012 de-duplication feature

    - by syneticon-dj
Now that Windows Server 2012 comes with de-duplication features for NTFS volumes I am having a hard time finding technical details about it. I can deduce from the TechNet documentation that the de-duplication action itself is an asynchronous process - not unlike how the SIS Groveler used to work - but there is virtually no detail about the implementation (algorithms used, resources needed, even the info on performance considerations is nothing but a bunch rule-of-thumb-style recommendations). Insights and pointers are greatly appreciated, a comparison to Solaris' ZFS de-duplication efficiency for a set of scenarios would be wonderful.

  • Network connection on Linux

    - by Kevin
A general question about network connection on Linux : once a network connection goes into time_wait, is it still tied to the process ? Does it still use resources like say filehandle ? Reason I ask is because once it goes into time_wait, lsof does not report it anymore. I guess that means that the network connection is no longer tied to the process and hence does not count against filehandle limit. Would like to confirm though.

  • using git for media libraries

    - by mpapis
Rationale: I want to manage libraries of media files (music, images) using git, there is git-annex but it requires haskel platform - but they do not play together well (also it's quite to big dependency for me). Question: Is there any other plugin with this functionality, or possibly would it be possible to write such plugin (resources?). • Creating a file with Puppet with facts from multiple hosts

    - by Belly
I'm trying to have puppet build a configuration file that looks like this: [All] Hosts=apt-dater@puppetmaster;apt-dater@blaster; (etc...) Basically, this file needs an entry for each node that includes the apt-dater class. I've been experimenting with exported resources, but I can't find a clean way of putting it together. How should I go about creating this file?

  • Firefox, reload without cache check

    - by pmoleri
It looks like a popular question but it's just the opposite. When I visit a site in Firefox 15 I have two different behaviours when: Pressing enter in the address bar Pressing F5 or the refresh button If I look in the network console I can see that F5 does a lot more requests, most of them about cached resources and with a 304-Not Modified answer. Is there's any shortcut to make a quick refresh? Just like pressing enter on the address bar.

  • I do not understand -printf script

    - by jerzdevs
I have taken over the responsibility of RHLE5 scripting and I've not had any training in this platform or BASH scripting. There's a script that has multiple pieces to it and I will ask only about the second piece but also show you the first, I think it will help with my question below. The first part of the script shows the output of users on a particular server: cut -d : -f 1 /etc/passwd The output will look something like: root bin joe rob other... The second script requires me to fill in each of the accounts listed from the above script and run. From what I can gather, and from my search on the man pages and other web searches, it goes out and finds the group owner of a file or directory and obviously sorts and picks out just unique records but not really sure - so that's my question, what does the below script really do? (The funny thing is, is that if I plug in each name from the output above, I'll sometimes receive a "cannot find username blah, blah, blah" message.) find username -printf %G | sort | uniq

  • Practical way to implement prevention of IP Spoofing

    - by user1369975
I am an undergraduate Computer Science student and was hoping to gain some knowledge of ways to help prevent IP spoofing but all the resources I have tried out elaborate this concept in a theoretical way. I want to try out my hands at one of the techniques like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_knocking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SYN_cookies How do I simulate this whole situation in my own system were I myself am the attacker and I myself have to defend it? And once I have gained an understanding of it, then how do I start translating that into programming terms?
