• PHP scripts run only in webroot directory,and return 500 error in other dirs

  This is my step by step process on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a brand new 320 HD: Turn on Laptop Insert Xubuntu 9.1 disc Boot to CD-rom After boot has finished, I install and instance of Xubuntu on the machine After install (without any errors), I reboot the the machine On reboot, the BIOS claims to be unable to read from device What could this be? • Virtually adjusting screen size and position

  Hi, I'm working on a display piece which is an LCD monitor that is partially covered and needs to be running an application in full screen in the uncovered portion of the screen. I have tried xvidtune on linux which gives me mode errors and switchresx on macosx which only seems to change resolution but not reposition nor resize (it stretches to full screen anyways). I'm wondering if there's anyway to do this? Practically, I have access to any OS.

• Hard drive is working fine then next boot up shows up as a unformatted.

  The drive is a Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB. There are no SMART errors and the drive sounds healthy. Restarted the computer from the drive working fine and then noticed that the drive had the same drive letter but has RAW as the file system. I have a few file/partition recovery software titles available but since doing any scans on this drive takes about 2.5 hours I wanted to know if any one had any advice.

• nVidia performance with newer X and newer driver abysmal with Compiz

  I recently upgraded Debian to Xorg 2.9.4 and installed nvidia-glx from experimental, version 260.19.21. This was somewhat of an uphill battle as the dependencies for the experimental nvidia-glx package are still somewhat broken. I got it to work without forcing the installation of any packages and without modifying the packages. However, after the upgrade compiz performance has been abysmal. I am using the desktop wall plugin and switching viewports is really slow - takes a few seconds for each switch. In addition to this, every effect that compiz does, such as zoom animations for icons when launching applications, takes seconds. The viewport switching speed changes relative to the amount of windows on that virtual screen - empty screens switch almost at normal speed, single browser windows work almost decently, but just 4 rxvt terminals slows the switches down to a crawl. My compiz configuration should be pretty basic. Xorg is likewise configured without anything special - the only "custom" configuration is forcing the driver name to be "nvidia". I've fiddled around with the nvidia-settings and compizconfig trying different VSync settings, but none of those helped. My graphics card is: NVIDIA GPU NVS 3100M (GT218) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0). This is laptop GPU that is from the Geforce GTX 200 series. Graphics card performance should naturally be no problem. EDIT: In the end, nothing really worked, and I got really annoyed with the state of compiz and its support in Debian. Many nVidia driver revisions have passed and I am using Gnome 3 now, so I am accepting the best answers to this question even though the issue was not resolved.

  A users Windows 7 laptop is throwing Event 4321, NetBT errors every two minutes. It is trying to register every DNS name on the network to it's own interface. While there is alot of discussion on single instances of this I have never seen it do it for every computer name in the network. Any thoughts?

• Network unreachable on Ubuntu guest after trying to set up a host only network on Virtualbox

  I have a Mac OS X host and a bunch of guests including Ubuntu and Arch Linux. I was trying to set up a host-only network at eth1 to let me ssh into the system. There are lot of tasks executed behind the scenes and if somethings fails (either by errors in logic or hardware problems) in most cases responsible person is not notified (or not notified instantly). I know about heavy-weight monitoring tools that could solve some of that problems but there over-complicated and too expensive for our team. • How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?

  When I upgrade or reinstall linux I backup my home folder by running sudo cp -pr /home/users/yitzchak /media/externalHDD/backups. When I do this I get errors saying that permissions could not be preserved and when I copy the folder back onto my local disk I see that ownership has been changed to root and I have to chown all of them back, which has to be done manually piecemeal because not all files have the same group. Is there any way around that?

• Exchange ActiveSync is not working with Android's 'verify certificate' setting, what do I need to do to make them work together?

  All other methods of Activesync and web access to my Exchange server are working fine with no errors or issues, but when we attempt to configure Android phones for the server, it will only work with 'verify certificate' checked off. Ideally, I'd like my users to be able to use the default configuration, which includes the 'Verify Certificate' option. My primary question is: 'What does Verify Certificate do?', as I imagine if I knew that, I might have some idea why it isn't working.

• Remote Debugging and deployment of a Project Built Locally

  We work on our projects locally, and deploy them on remote servers for testing. This is currently done via git commits/push/pulls. But the problem here is that most of the commit contain errors and/or break the code in significant manner due to the lack of testing. Is there a way we can deploy the code on the remote server without using git commits, or some sort of temporary commits or patch or any other mechanism? And only commit, whenever it is important.

• Can create and delete files through samba, but not modify?

  I'm connecting from Windows 7 to Ubuntu Server 10.04 using samba. I can create new files in the share, delete those files, but if I try to edit a file, and then save it, I get an access denied. My User in Windows is the same as the one I'm connecting as and as setup in Ubuntu. This is very odd. I also have trouble copying files to Ubuntu as well. It errors but lets me copy them anyway.

• Retry failed downloads - Google Music Manager

  After my old computer died I wanted to download my music collection from Google Music - which is very easy with Googles Music Manager. After a few hours it had downloaded my library, but also showed around 300 download errors. Downloading the library another time, however, made different files fail (Which tells me that the error isn't connected to the files as such). Does anybody know of a way how to retry only the songs that failed downloading?

• Weird cyrillic characters behavior after uploading to Ubuntu production server

• Can't recover hard drive

  My drive got corrupt after a thunderstorm. It used to be 1 partition of 2.5tb but now it shows 2 partitions. It's weird because 300gig free space is about how much it had before corrupting, but it was part of the first partition. I tried $ sudo resize2fs -f /dev/sdb1 Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sdb1 to 536870911 (4k) blocks. resize2fs: Can't read an block bitmap while trying to resize /dev/sdb1 Please run 'e2fsck -fy /dev/sdb1' to fix the filesystem after the aborted resize operation. sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdb1 e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011) The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 610471680 blocks The physical size of the device is 536870911 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Abort? n .... Error reading block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes Force rewrite<y>? yes Error writing block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes ... A lot of these. I can't use e2fsck -y because the first question aborts if I say "y". If I put a weight on the 'y' key it fails because none of the errors were really fixed. I asked this question before and tried using gparted but gparted fails because the first thing it does is: e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 giving the same error. The disk status says healthy. There are no bad blocks. This is very frustrating because I can see the data in testdisk and it looks like it's all there. I already bought another 2.5tb drive and made a clone using dd. • Append .mov/.avi files with a mac
