• IIS Virtual Directory/Application & Forms authentication

  I've setup and deployed a simple forms authentication website with membership using .NET 4. I've created a virtual directory (now converted to "Application") in IIS7 and setup the web.config file in the virtual directory as follows: <system.webServer> <directoryBrowse enabled="true" /> </system.webServer> Great! I browse to the virtual directory: ../mydomain/books/ and I'm automatically redirected to the login page specified by web.config in my root directory and the url path is placed as follows: ../Account/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fbooks At this point, I login succesfully, but I am not redirected anywhere, and when I manually return to the directory, ../books, I'm sent back to the login page, where I'm already logged in? So I'm confused about what my problem is! I should be successfully authenticated, and than redirected back to the directory, or at the very least be able to view it manually after I log in right?

• FileSystemWatcher keeping parent directory

  I am using FileSystemWatcher to monitor a folder, and it seems to be preventing the folder's parent from being deleted. For example, I have the file structure: C:\Root\FolderToWatch\... with the FileSystemWatcher targeting FolderToWatch. While my program is running, if I go to Windows Explorer and try to delete Root, I get an error "Cannot delete Root: access is denied". However, if I delete FolderToWatch FIRST, I can then delete Root without incident. (Needless to say, if the FileSystemWatcher is not enabled, I have no problem deleting either folder.) What gives? Why does the FileSystemWatcher hang onto it's target's parent like that? How (if possible) can I stop this behavior? I would like the user to be able to freely move or delete directories in Windows Explorer.

• How to navigate through folders without opening a new buffer in Emacs?

  (I don't know if it is important, but I am using Aquamacs - and yeah, I am a newbie) When I want to open a file I use C-x C-f and usually just chose my home folder. From there I go clicking on folders until I find the file I want. I really don't like thought that each new file I open creates a new buffer. This is especially annoying because I am using Aquamacs with the window (tab) option enabled. I know I could simply get rid of the window option, but I quite like it, except of course for when I open a file and a zillion tabs are created. So my question is: is there a way to disable the new buffer creation when "navigating" through folders? Thanks :)

But it doesn't work on my server. • How to convert JavaScript dictionary into Python syntax

  Writing out javascript dictionary from inside of JavaScript- enabled application (such as Adobe) into external .jsx file (or any other .txt file) the context of resulted file dictionary looks like: ({one:"1", two:"2"}) (Please note that each dictionary keys are written as they are the variables name (which is not true). A next step is to read this .jsx file with Python. I need to find a way to convert ({one:"1", two:"2"}) into Python dictionary syntax such as: {'one':"1", 'two':"2"} It has been already suggested that instead of using JavaScript's built-in dict.toSource() it would make more sense to use JSON which would write a dictionary content in similar to Python syntax. But unfortunately using JSON is not an option for me. I need to find a way to convert ({one:"1", two:"2"}) into {'one':"1", 'two':"2"} using Python alone. Any suggestions on how to achieve it? Once again, the problem mostly in dictionary keys syntax which inside of Python look like variable names instead of strings-like dictionary keys names: one vs "one"

• System.Timers.Timer leaking due to "direct delegate roots"

  Apologies for the rather verbose and long-winded post, but this problem's been perplexing me for a few weeks now so I'm posting as much information as I can in order to get this resolved quickly. We have a WPF UserControl which is being loaded by a 3rd party app. The 3rd party app is a presentation application which loads and unloads controls on a schedule defined by an XML file which is downloaded from a server. Our control, when it is loaded into the application makes a web request to a web service and uses the data from the response to display some information. We're using an MVVM architecture for the control. The entry point of the control is a method that is implementing an interface exposed by the main app and this is where the control's configuration is set up. This is also where I set the DataContext of our control to our MainViewModel. The MainViewModel has two other view models as properties and the main UserControl has two child controls. Depending on the data received from the web service, the main UserControl decides which child control to display, e.g. if there is a HTTP error or the data received is not valid, then display child control A, otherwise display child control B. As you'd expect, these two child controls bind two separate view models each of which is a property of MainViewModel. Now child control B (which is displayed when the data is valid) has a RefreshService property/field. RefreshService is an object that is responsible for updating the model in a number of ways and contains 4 System.Timers.Timers; a _modelRefreshTimer a _viewRefreshTimer a _pageSwitchTimer a _retryFeedRetrievalOnErrorTimer (this is only enabled when something goes wrong with retrieving data). I should mention at this point that there are two types of data; the first changes every minute, the second changes every few hours. The controls' configuration decides which type we are using/displaying. If data is of the first type then we update the model quite frequently (every 30 seconds) using the _modelRefreshTimer's events. If the data is of the second type then we update the model after a longer interval. However, the view still needs to be refreshed every 30 seconds as stale data needs to be removed from the view (hence the _viewRefreshTimer). The control also paginates the data so we can see more than we can fit on the display area. This works by breaking the data up into Lists and switching the CurrentPage (which is a List) property of the view model to the right List. This is done by handling the _pageSwitchTimer's Elapsed event. Now the problem My problem is that the control, when removed from the visual tree doesn't dispose of it's timers. This was first noticed when we started getting an unusually high number of requests on the web server end very soon after deploying this control and found that requests were being made at least once a second! We found that the timers were living on and not stopping hours after the control had been removed from view and that the more timers there were the more requests piled up at the web server. My first solution was to implement IDisposable for the RefreshService and do some clean up when the control's UnLoaded event was fired. Within the RefreshServices Dispose method I've set Enabled to false for all the timers, then used the Stop() method on all of them. I've then called Dispose() too and set them to null. None of this worked. After some reading around I found that event handlers may hold references to Timers and prevent them from being disposed and collected. After some more reading and researching I found that the best way around this was to use the Weak Event Pattern. Using this blog and this blog I've managed to work around the shortcomings in the Weak Event pattern. However, none of this solves the problem. Timers are still not being disabled or stopped (let alone disposed) and web requests are continuing to build up. Mem Profiler tells me that "This type has N instances that are directly rooted by a delegate. This can indicate the delegate has not been properly removed" (where N is the number of instances). As far as I can tell though, all listeners of the Elapsed event for the timers are being removed during the cleanup so I can't understand why the timers continue to run. Thanks for reading. • Need help using ThemeRoller

  Hi - I'm using DataTables to dress up a table I'm using to display XML results based on an XSL transformation. I have everything working from a technical sense (paging, sorting, filtering), but I'm trying to figure out to use a ThemeRoller theme to make it look like they have on their website. So far, I have added the following file to my project with its reference: <link type="text/css" href="css/custom-theme/jquery-ui-1.8.7.custom.css" rel="stylesheet"/> and enabled ThemeRoller themes using the following as per the DataTables website: $(document).ready(function() { $('#mainTable').dataTable( { "bJQueryUI": true, "sPaginationType": "two_button" }); }); The table gets styled, but it doesn't look right with the header rows being too wide and things being on multiple lines that should be on one line. Any indication as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks very much in advance.

• How to create an object reference to a xaml page from App.xaml.cs codebehind?

  Hi all, I have a Silverlight 4 Business Project where I have enabled the ASP.NET Authentication/Authorization role information. I would like to pass the currently authenticated user's account information from the app.xaml.cs codebehind to a different XAML page, but I have no idea how that is done, or if it's even possible. My goal is to databind the IsEnabled property of various buttons of my target XAML page, based on whether the current user is in a particular admin related role or not. The Application_UserLoaded event handler of app.xaml.cs seems to be the safest event handler to initiate this task because it fires only after the user's account information is loaded from the server. • How to clear cache for previously installed InfoPath forms on a client computer?

  Hi folks, We recently had a strange issue with an InfoPath 2007 form being opened from SharePoint 2007 and receiving the error message "the system cannot find the file specified". To be clear, this was not a form services enabled form. Anyway, after spending way too much time trying to figure out what was going on (nothing in the MOSS 2007 server log files), we determined that the user had previously installed an older version of the form (but with the same name) on their workstation using a no longer available msi file (meaning we could not uninstall it from the workstation). So I wanted to pass on a very simple solution for anyone who is unfortunate to run into this problem in the future (since I lost a great deal of hair over it): Fire up regedit, go to HKEY_LOCALMACHINE-Software-Microsoft-Office-InfoPath-SolutionsCatalog. Locate the key that has the previously installed form name, and delete it. This will cause InfoPath to stop trying to open the form locally (which is either old or doesn't exist) and force it to open your form from SharePoint. Hope this helps someone!

  Hi, I've created a view in Drupal that retrieves a list of nodes. The display of this view is a page and it works perfectly well. It does even allow me to filter its content by argument. See the current's view configuration (click to enlarge): I want to use AJAX to use the filter (by parameter) functionality without reloading the page. I've enabled the "Use AJAX" option but I am not sure on how to continue. Any ideas on how to do that? By the way, I'm building my own theme (in case that changes anything). Thanks in advance Update: Basically, this view works when I browse through section/parameter1, section/parameter2... but I want to do the same with AJAX, without reloading the page.   I have come across a strange problem in one of our applications on win2k8/Vista x64 with UAC enabled. It is a process which hosts the UI for our service and runs in the context of the logged on user. When logged in as a domain user who is a member of the "Administrators" group, writing to the registry under HKLM fails due to UAC with access denied. But when logged in as the local "Administrator" account (non-domain) then writing to the registry succeeds. Both accounts are adminstrators - is there a distinction between domain and non-domain accounts with UAC? What gives?

• Interface Builder only allows one button to be "touchable"

  I'm making a clone of the classic game simon, the memory matching game. My (iPad) app will load fine, i tap start, the game screen loads, and only one of my four buttons will respond to touch commands. To troubleshoot, I tried creating a second unrelated nib and just populating it with four buttons not linked to anything. However, only one of those four buttons would respond to touch! There are no IBActions being called, nothing. Both the view itself, and all four buttons are touch enabled in the inspector...I'm stumped. I'm moreso asking if anyone has encountered anything simillar, as I'd rather not burden potential help with app-specific questions if it's avoidable. Thank you!

  Could you give a bullet list of practical differences/implication? I read relevant MSDN article, but my understanding asynchronous exceptions is still a bit hazy. I am writing a test suite using Boost.Test and my compiler emits a warning that EHa should be enabled: warning C4535: calling _set_se_translator() requires /EHa The project itself uses only plain exceptions (from STL) and doesn't need /EHa switch. Do I have to recompile it with /EHa switch to make the test suite work properly? My feeling is that I need /EHa for the test suit only. Thank you and happy new year.

  Say that there are no WIFI networks currently available and my network-enabled app is connected over 3G. How can I detect if a user has roamed into a WIFI network? I would also like to detect the case when the user is connected over WIFI and suddenly received 3G signal. In other words, I would like to be asynchronously notified of network adapter changes. I tried using the SCNetworkReachability framework asynchronously but found that for some reason, I am not receiving Wifi-related events (i.e. adapter on/off) when connected over 3G.

• WPF - Listbox bound to collection acts as one item

  Hi, I have a listbox with the ItemsControl binding the ItemsSource to a readonly collection of strings. The ItemTemplate then declares the DataTemplate as a checkbox where its content is that of the name of the particular item in the collection and IsChecked bound to a property to determine whether or not the item is selected (it's just a listbox of checkboxes) This works fine with one exception - MouseOver the ListBox and it acts as if the collection of Strings is a single item; the whole box acts as if selected. This wouldn't be as much of a problem were it not for this also affecting the scrollbars where they won't get enabled - presumably because it considers the one item as being visible on the screen even though it in actual facts is x+ with only x-y showing on the screen. How do I get the listbox to act as if each individual string is its own item. I assume it acts this way because I declared a datatemplate in order to get a listbox of checkboxes?? Any help would be much appreciated!

• Best practice for partial updates in a RESTful service

  I am writing a RESTful service for a customer management system and I am trying to find the best practice for updating records partially. For example, I want the caller to be able to read the full record with a GET request. But for updating it only certain operations on the record are allowed, like change the status from ENABLED to DISABLED. (I have more complex scenarios than this) I don't want the caller to submit the entire record with just the updated field for security reasons (it also feels like overkill). Is there a recommended way of constructing the URIs? Do I use GET, POST, PUT or is there no agreed way of doing these kind of things? When reading the REST books RPC style calls seem to be frowned upon. Thanks Frank

  Does anyone know how to modify the thread scheduling (specifically affinity) when using TBB? Doing a high level analysis on a simple parallel-for application, it seems like TBB is specifying the underlying threads' affinity in a way that reduces performance. Specifically, the cores I'm running on have hyper-threading enabled, and it looks like TBB is affinitizing threads to the same core even if there is a different core left completely unloaded. FWIW, I realize it's likely that TBB is doing the "right thing" and that changing the threads' affinity will only reduce performance. I'd just like to experiment with it to see if that's really the case.

• Visual Studio detaches from application as soon as debugging starts

  I have a web application that I've always been able to run in Visual Studio and it debugs just fine (breakpoints work, I can pause execution, etc). Recently, the behavior changed suddenly, and a few things happen: I start debugging, it lauches IE and loads the application, but after a few seconds (sometimes the page hasn't even displayed yet), Visual Studio acts as if debugging has stopped - I'm able to edit code in VS again, and the "Play" button on the toolbar is enabled. The application continues to run in the IE window just spawned, but I'm not attached to it During this few seconds that VS is "debugging", because it detaches, my breakpoints show as hollow - as if I'm set to "Release" mode and they won't be hit. In fact, I have a breakpoint set in Page_Load, and it skips right by. I've checked, and I'm set to debug mode, though the compile mode dropdown is missing from my toolbar (I checked in the build properties to ensure I was in debug mode). Can anybody shed some light here?
