  I get this error trying to run the example script here: http://github.com/tenderlove/dnssd/blob/master/sample/register.rb It says I am using a Bonjour Compatibility Layer and I should use the native api. • Why is /usr/bin/env permission denied to rails server?

  I've just set up rails on an apache server running on Ubuntu, and when I try to go to the root page it gives this error: /usr/bin/env: bash: Permission denied env and all the directories in the path all have permissions 755. I tried setting env to have permissions 777 but still got the same error. Rails is running as "nobody". Why is this happening? I don't know what else to try. • PHP Page Stopped outputting content After Running "yum install php-devel" Command

  This error is bizarre but after running the "yum install php-devel" command (after a long day of trying to install Facedetect and OpenCV for face detection) my site stopped functioning. The site uses mysql and php. When you hit the url, the page executes the mysql and the php, but it appears to randomly stop outputting the content of the page. None of the code was changed and the site was working flawlessly prior to running the mentioned ssh command. I do use output buffering in the site, but after removing the calls "ob_flush", "ob_end_flush" and "ob_start" it didn't appear to help—still having issues with the site. Any ideas what this could be? • DevConnections Slides and Samples Posted

  I’ve posted the slides and samples to my DevConnections Sessions for anyone interested. I had a lot of fun with my sessions this time around mainly because the sessions picked were a little off the beaten track (well, the handlers/modules and e-commerce sessions anyway). For those of you that attended I hope you found the sessions useful. For the rest of you – you can check out the slides and samples if you like. Here’s what was covered: Introduction to jQuery with ASP.NET This session covered mostly the client side of jQuery demonstrated on a small sample page with a variety of incrementally built up examples of selection and page manipulation. This session also introduces some of the basics of AJAX communication talking to ASP.NET. When I do this session it never turns out exactly the same way and this time around the examples were on the more basic side and purely done with hands on demonstrations rather than walk throughs of more complex examples. Alas this session always feels like it needs another half an hour to get through the full sortiment of functionality. The slides and samples cover a wider variety of topics and there are many examples that demonstrate more advanced operations like interacting with WCF REST services, using client templating and building rich client only windowed interfaces. Download Low Level ASP.NET: Handlers and Modules This session was a look at the ASP.NET pipeline and it discusses some of the ASP.NET base architecture and key components from HttpRuntime on up through the various modules and handlers that make up the ASP.NET/IIS pipeline. This session is fun as there are a number of cool examples that demonstrate the power and flexibility of ASP.NET, but some of the examples were external and interfacing with other technologies so they’re not actually included in the downloadable samples. However, there are still a few cool ones in there – there’s an image resizing handler, an image overlay module that stamps images with Sample if loaded from a certain folder, an OpenID authentication module (which failed during the demo due to the crappy internet connection at DevConnections this year :-}), Response filtering using a generic filter stream component, a generic error handler and a few others. The slides cover a lot of the ASP.NET pipeline flow and various HttpRuntime components. Download Electronic Payment Processing in ASP.NET Applications This session covered the business end and integration of electronic credit card processing and PayPal. A good part of this session deals with what’s involved in payment processing, getting signed up and who you have to deal with for your merchant account. We then took a look at integration of credit card processing via some generic components provided with the session that allow processing using a unified class interface with specific implementations for several of the most common gateway providers including Authorize.NET, PayFlowPro, LinkPoint, BluePay etc. We also briefly looked at PayPal Classic implementation which provides a quick and cheap if not quite as professional mechanism for taking payments online. The samples provide the Credit Card processing wrappers for the various gateway providers as well as a PayPal helper class to generate the PayPal redirect urls as well as helper code for dealing with IPN callbacks. • PHP doesn't properly URL-decode POST values, or is the bug somewhere else?

  I have a PHP website that integrates with PayPal. As part of it's normal operation it sends a POST request to a user defined URL about every transaction (and some other events). It's called IPN for those who know. All was/is working just fine, until we moved to a new hosting provider last week. This naturally resulted in downtime, changing DNS entries, PHP misconfigurations, etc. In short - PayPal was unable to send the notifications for a few days. Now, this is not that bad, because there is an option just for that - you can log into PayPal, go to the appropriate menu item, and have it resend the failed notifications. Which we did, and it resulted in over 400 error emails. The problem is that normally the email of the receiver ($_POST['business']) is received by PHP as [email protected], but when resending it comes out as my%40business.com. And the request validation goes crazy. Obviously either something somewhere is missing a call to urldecode() or something is doing one too many urlencode(). But who? Is this a bug in PHP? I've never had such a problem before, not with any POST data ever. Perhaps PayPal has a bug? Wouldn't be surprising, but then this should have been caught ages ago. Or perhaps I'm doing something wrong and I should really be calling the urldecode() myself?

First I get: javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException: unexpected element (uri:"http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/", local:"Fault"). Problem occurs in deserialization of the message when I have no user defined exception artifact in the JAXB context, and during invocation when I add those non JAXB compatible artifacts in the JAXB context. I'm usign Jboss WS webservice stack within Jboss 4.2.3.GA Any elegant solution to this problem is welcomed !

• Are PyArg_ParseTuple() "s" format specifiers useful in Python 3.x C API?

  I'm trying to write a Python C extension that processes byte strings, and I have something basically working for Python 2.x and Python 3.x. For the Python 2.x code, near the start of my function, I currently have a line: if (!PyArg_ParseTuple(args, "s#:in_bytes", &src_ptr, &src_len)) ... I notice that the s# format specifier accepts both Unicode strings and byte strings. I really just want it to accept byte strings and reject Unicode. For Python 2.x, this might be "good enough"--the standard hashlib seems to do the same, accepting Unicode as well as byte strings. However, Python 3.x is meant to clean up the Unicode/byte string mess and not let the two be interchangeable. So, I'm surprised to find that in Python 3.x, the s format specifiers for PyArg_ParseTuple() still seem to accept Unicode and provide a "default encoded string version" of the Unicode. This seems to go against the principles of Python 3.x, making the s format specifiers unusable in practice. Is my analysis correct, or am I missing something? Looking at the implementation for hashlib for Python 3.x (e.g. see md5module.c, function MD5_update() and its use of GET_BUFFER_VIEW_OR_ERROUT() macro) I see that it avoids the s format specifiers, and just takes a generic object (O specifier) and then does various explicit type checks using the GET_BUFFER_VIEW_OR_ERROUT() macro. Is this what we have to do?

• Time to start returning IQueryable<T> instead of IList<T> to my Web UI / Web API Layer?

  I've got a multi-layer application that starts with the repository pattern for all data access and it returns IQueryable to the Services layer. The Services layer, which includes all of the business logic, returns IList to the Controllers (note: I'm using ASP.NET MVC for the UI layer). The benefit of returning IQueryable in the data access layer is that it allows my repositories to be extremely simple and the database queries to be deferred. However, I'm triggering the database queries in my services layer so that my unit tests is more reliable and I don't give flexibility to the Controllers to reshape my queries. However, I've recently encountered several situations where deferring the execution of queries down to the Controllers would have been significantly more performant because the Controllers had to do some projections on the data that was UI specific. Additionally, with the emergence of things like oData, I was starting to wonder if end points (e.g. web UI or web apis) should be working directly with IQueryable. What are your thoughts? Is it time to start returning IQueryable from the services layer to the UI layer? Or stick with IList?   Having previously obtained a post ID from a call to gdata.blogger.client.add_post()... post = client.add_post(...) post_id = post.get_post_id() ...how do I use that post id to retrieve the post in the future? I thought maybe gdata.blogger.client.Query would be the way to go, but this doesn't support post id as a query term. The example code distributed with the Python gdata module doesn't have an example of this use case, and after poking around gdata.blogger.client.* for a while I'm not making much progress. I could obviously iterate through all the posts in the blog until find the one with the corresponding id, but that would be a terrible, terrible idea.

But if you try First name only it says that there are no lawyers in the database called amr (obviously there is). If I change (last__iexact=last_name) to (last__icontains=last_name) then leaving Last Name blank works fine and amr is found. But with last__icontains=last_name if you search for "collin" you also get "collins" and "collingwood" which is not what I want. Do you know how I can use iexact and also have it ignored if it is blank? As soon as I turn on this api server running on ssl, it works for about a minute and then crashes and gives a 504 Gateway Time-out. Running nginx/1.2.3
