Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

How to find people to help translate my open source project?

I'm a big StackOverflow fan, but I think this question belongs here, correct me if I'm wrong. So basically I'm trying to localize my plugin in as many languages as possible. I posted a section on the docs to reach people that wants to help translating but I only got one contributor that attached a German translation. So far I got 4 languages, English, Spanish, French and German. So my question is, how do you guys translate your projects? Where do you find people interested in contributing? Does anybody use Google translate to do the job?

Override a static library's global function

Not sure if this question belongs here or on SO, but posting here for now :) I'm trying to override a global function defined in "StaticLib" for my iOS application but the compiler keeps giving me the duplicate symbol error. Relevant code: #import "MyApplication.h" #import "StaticLib.h" NSData* getAllData() { NSLog(@"myGetAllData"); return nil; } @implementation MyApplication ... @end I've looked into Apple's runtime library but that all seems to be class-oriented. Any suggestions or is it just not possible to override global functions from static libraries?

Grouping IP Addresses based on ranges [on hold]

Say I have 5 different categories based on IP Address ranges for monitoring user base. What is the best way to categorize a list of input IP addresses into one of the 5 categories depending on which range it falls into? Would sorting using a segment tree structure be efficient? Specifically - I'm looking to see if there are more efficient ways to sort IP addresses into groups or ranges than using a segment sort. Example: I have a list of IP address ranges per country from http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/legacy/geolite/ I am trying to group incoming user requests on a website per country for demographic analysis. My current approach is to use a segment tree structure for the IP address ranges and use lookups based on the structure to identify which range a given ip address belongs to. I would like to know if there is a better way of accomplishing this.

proper model for a multi site rails app

Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is correct place to ask this question. My apologies if it is not. I need to create a web app where people will sign up, call it main-app.com, when they sign up my code will generate a usersite.my-app.com, they will login and only be able to manage their mini site. My question is, is it correct to model this out by creating a table for site, a table for user, users belong to site and site has many users. Then I should create a content table that belongs to user AND site? is that right? Thanks Jeff

I Can't update 12.04 to 12.10 ERROR:"gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!"

I'm trying to update to 12.10 from a 12.04 machine. When I ran the code sudo do-release-upgrade -d in my terminal and verified my password it checked for a new upgrade. I was then returned with this: gpg: Good signature from "Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <[email protected]>" gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature! gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner.` There of course is more but it looks like it may or may not be showing private information with it. What's causing this and how do I fix this.

Can anyone list some real examples of 'HTML5' being used in the wild?

I am using HTML5 in the same way everyone seems to be using it these days, meaning: HTML5 tags, Canvas / 3D / javascript and CSS3. I am struggling to find examples of sites that are using these technologies practically and that are not just a demo of something cool someone has managed to do using Canvas or CSS3 transforms or shapes. I am looking for sites that have a nice visual look but also take advantage of things like animation, scrolling and offset à la Silverback or the Canvas to create an interactive and I guess 'Flash-looking' site. How to redirect a international domain to a subfolder on the English site without hurting Google rankings?

I have two sites: www.example.de www.main.com www.main.com is English version of www.example.de which is in German. I want to keep only www.main.com. For the English version I will keep www.main.com, but for German I want to move it to www.main.com/de. I am wondering what would be best solution for old www.example.de: Redirect everything from www.example.de to www.main.com/de using 301 redirect? Redirect everything from www.example.de towww.main.com/de/page-url-of-old-size.html? So each link actually get own address. Is that necessary or will Google realize where the page belongs on new site even if I redirect everything to home page? Any other solution, maybe just set in Google webmaster tools the new domain or anything like that?

Pattern for loading and handling resources

Many times there is the need to load external resources into the program, may they be graphics, audio samples or text strings. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs? As in (for example, in a game): Graphics g = GraphicsLoader.load(CHAR01); Character c = new Character(..., g); ... c.draw(); Generally speaking which of these two is the more robust solution? How do I allow a non-default user to use serial device ttyUSB0?

I have an Ubuntu 11.10 system with 2 users: The first was created during the installation The second instead was created after. It belongs to the sudoers group. Now the problem is that when the second tries to use a device ttyUSB0 the following error is returned: "Could not open serial port /dev/ttyUSB0" I was able to fix it by using: sudo chown :second_user /dev/ttyUSB0 However when I disconnect the device and reconnect it the problem comes back. Is there a way to allow different users to access the devices? I suppose I have to add the user to a specific group. Currently the owner is root and the group is dialout. However I'm not sure about the group and I don't know how to add the user. Thanks!

What is the sudo password after I deleted the password for the user?

To have an easier access to the computer I deleted the user's password so it is blank. But now I'm still asked to type in a password for sudo actions such as installing programms, etc. I know that this belongs to Ubuntu's outrageous security policy (which is why I use Ubuntu in the first place..) but I don't have any password to enter any more!! The old user password is not accepted and anything else (like just hitting enter) doesn't work either. I already tried the recovery mode (root shell) way passwd USER< but it replied that it can't access the password or it has no authority. Thanks in advance for your help!

Possible to stop Adobe DreamWeaver from rewriting 'onclick' to 'onClick'? [closed]

I've been giving my dev team grief by checking in HTML edited in DW. It turns out that DW has silently been rewriting all instances of 'onclick' to 'onClick' completely breaking the application in Webkit on us. I've done some digging on Google and this appears to be a bug that goes back to at least 2004. Supposedly it has nothing to do with your code re-writing settings and what triggers it is opening any document that does not contain a Doctype. Few of ours do, given that we're maintaining a framework that's using all sorts of include and dependency files. In all my Googling, I haven't found a fix, though. Has anyone come across one short of swearing off Adobe products forever?* something, btw, that I'm perfectly fine doing...it's just that given the insane IT lockdown on our work machines, we have very few software choices. For now, It's Notepad++ for me.

The way I see it you have a couple of options for including a blog on your site. Roll your own Install Something Like Wordpress Use a hosted service like Tumblr Obviously, if you can get away with Option 3 you have done yourself a favor. I have been using Tumblr and pointing blog.mydomain.com to the domains.tumblr.com CNAME to get a free blog that looks like it belongs to my site. I want to be able to display my blog on my root level hostname like mydomain.com/blog. The whole point of moving from blog.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog is for SEO purposes. Whats the best way to go about this and still get to leverage a hosted blogging platform like Tumblr?

Single statement if block - braces or no? [on hold]

Which is better/more generally accepted? This: if(condition) { statement; } Or: if(condition) statement; I tend to prefer the first one, because I think it makes it easier to tell what actually belongs in the if block, it saves others from adding the braces later (or creating a bug by forgetting to), and it makes all your if statements uniform instead of some with braces and some without. The second one, however, is still syntactically correct and definitely more compact. I'm curious to see which is more generally preferred by others though.

GWT & HTML5 Video in Mobile Safari

I'm trying to code a site in GWT that plays videos with HTML5. Everything works great on the desktop, but mobile Safari on both the iPhone and iPad do not play the video. I can play a video using Video for Everybody. I've even copied the code to my own plain HTML page, and it works flawlessly. If I serve that same code via a GWT widget, mobile safari will not play the video. On the iPhone I see a gray box with a prohibitory sign around the play button, and on the iPad it shows up as a black box. I've made sure my doctype is <!DOCTYPE html>, but I don't know where else to start debugging. Perhaps it it because the code is injected via javascript? Any pointers on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated. So I would like a series of select boxes that are populated dynamically based on the previous, however I also would like to add another record to that select box if you cant find the one you want. I have a ListView in which one of the column contains combo box. I have binded the selectedItem of a Listview, so that I get the current object (selected row ) in the listview. When I do any operation in a combo box like selection change then the listview row ( in which that combo box belongs) is not selected be default and hence my selectedItem gives null or previous row selected object. Rails ActiveRecord: Select Posts WITHOUT comments

I have a a Comments table and a Posts table, where a Post has many comments and a comment belongs to a post (i.e. it has a post_id in the table). How can I efficiently select the last ten Posts that DO NOT have comments. I can't seem to accomplish this without first selecting all the posts and checking each for a 0 comment count.
