  • C++ assignment operators dynamic arrays

    - by user2905445
    First off i know the multiplying part is wrong but i have some questions about the code. 1. When i am overloading my operator+ i print out the matrix using cout << *this then right after i return *this and when i do a+b on matix a and matix b it doesnt give me the same thing this is very confusing. 2. When i make matrix c down in my main i cant use my default constructor for some reason because when i go to set it = using my assignment operator overloaded function it gives me an error saying "expression must be a modifiable value. although using my constructor that sets the row and column numbers is the same as my default constructor using (0,0). 3. My assignment operator= function uses a copy constructor to make a new matrix using the values on the right hand side of the equal sign and when i print out c it doesn't give me anything Any help would be great this is my hw for a algorithm class which i still need to do the algorithm for the multiplying matrices but i need to solve these issues first and im having a lot of trouble please help. //Programmer: Eric Oudin //Date: 10/21/2013 //Description: Working with matricies #include <iostream> using namespace std; class matrixType { public: friend ostream& operator<<(ostream&, const matrixType&); const matrixType& operator*(const matrixType&); matrixType& operator+(const matrixType&); matrixType& operator-(const matrixType&); const matrixType& operator=(const matrixType&); void fillMatrix(); matrixType(); matrixType(int, int); matrixType(const matrixType&); ~matrixType(); private: int **matrix; int rowSize; int columnSize; }; ostream& operator<< (ostream& osObject, const matrixType& matrix) { osObject << endl; for (int i=0;i<matrix.rowSize;i++) { for (int j=0;j<matrix.columnSize;j++) { osObject << matrix.matrix[i][j] <<", "; } osObject << endl; } return osObject; } const matrixType& matrixType::operator=(const matrixType& matrixRight) { matrixType temp(matrixRight); cout << temp; return temp; } const matrixType& matrixType::operator*(const matrixType& matrixRight) { matrixType temp(rowSize*matrixRight.columnSize, columnSize*matrixRight.rowSize); if(rowSize == matrixRight.columnSize) { for (int i=0;i<rowSize;i++) { for (int j=0;j<columnSize;j++) { temp.matrix[i][j] = matrix[i][j] * matrixRight.matrix[i][j]; } } } else { cout << "Cannot multiply matricies that have different size rows from the others columns." << endl; } return temp; } matrixType& matrixType::operator+(const matrixType& matrixRight) { if(rowSize == matrixRight.rowSize && columnSize == matrixRight.columnSize) { for (int i=0;i<rowSize;i++) { for (int j=0;j<columnSize;j++) { matrix[i][j] += matrixRight.matrix[i][j]; } } } else { cout << "Cannot add matricies that are different sizes." << endl; } cout << *this; return *this; } matrixType& matrixType::operator-(const matrixType& matrixRight) { matrixType temp(rowSize, columnSize); if(rowSize == matrixRight.rowSize && columnSize == matrixRight.columnSize) { for (int i=0;i<rowSize;i++) { for (int j=0;j<columnSize;j++) { matrix[i][j] -= matrixRight.matrix[i][j]; } } } else { cout << "Cannot subtract matricies that are different sizes." << endl; } return *this; } void matrixType::fillMatrix() { for (int i=0;i<rowSize;i++) { for (int j=0;j<columnSize;j++) { cout << "Enter the matix number at (" << i << "," << j << "):"; cin >> matrix[i][j]; } } } matrixType::matrixType() { rowSize=0; columnSize=0; matrix = new int*[rowSize]; for (int i=0; i < rowSize; i++) { matrix[i] = new int[columnSize]; } } matrixType::matrixType(int setRows, int setColumns) { rowSize=setRows; columnSize=setColumns; matrix = new int*[rowSize]; for (int i=0; i < rowSize; i++) { matrix[i] = new int[columnSize]; } } matrixType::matrixType(const matrixType& otherMatrix) { rowSize=otherMatrix.rowSize; columnSize=otherMatrix.columnSize; matrix = new int*[rowSize]; for (int i = 0; i < rowSize; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < columnSize; j++) { matrix[i]=new int[columnSize]; matrix[i][j]=otherMatrix.matrix[i][j]; } } } matrixType::~matrixType() { delete [] matrix; } int main() { matrixType a(2,2); matrixType b(2,2); matrixType c(0,0); cout << "fill matrix a:"<< endl;; a.fillMatrix(); cout << "fill matrix b:"<< endl;; b.fillMatrix(); cout << a; cout << b; c = a+b; cout <<"matrix a + matrix b =" << c; system("PAUSE"); return 0; }

  • non-class rvalues always have cv-unqualified types

    - by FredOverflow
    §3.10 section 9 says "non-class rvalues always have cv-unqualified types". That made me wonder... int foo() { return 5; } const int bar() { return 5; } void pass_int(int&& i) { std::cout << "rvalue\n"; } void pass_int(const int&& i) { std::cout << "const rvalue\n"; } int main() { pass_int(foo()); // prints "rvalue" pass_int(bar()); // prints "const rvalue" } According to the standard, there is no such thing as a const rvalue for non-class types, yet bar() prefers to bind to const int&&. Is this a compiler bug? EDIT: Apparently, this is also a const rvalue :)

  • How to define enum in as3?

    - by Nava Carmon
    Is there a way to define an enum in AS3 in a way we do it in other languages? I can define constants with defined values like that: private const CONST_1:int = 0; private const CONST_2:int = 1; private const CONST_3:int = 2; and so on. If I want to insert some other constant between 3 these I need to move all values like that: private const CONST_1:int = 0; private const CONST_2:int = 1; private const CONST_2A:int = 2; private const CONST_3:int = 3; while in other language I would end up with only adding a new member to enum closure like that: enum { CONST_1 = 0, CONST_2, CONST_2A, CONST_3 } MyConstEnum; Does AS3 has something similar? Thanks

  • User defined conversion operator as argument for printf

    - by BC
    I have a class that defined a user defined operator for a TCHAR*, like so CMyClass::operator const TCHAR*() const { // returns text as const TCHAR* } I want to be able to do something like CMyClass myClass; _tprintf(_T("%s"), myClass); or even _tprintf(_T("%s"), CMyClass(value)); But when trying, printf always prints (null) instead of the value. I have also tried a normal char* operator, as well variations with const etc. It only works correctly if I explicitly call the operator or do a cast, like _tprintf(_T("%s\n"), (const TCHAR*)myClass); _tprintf(_T("%s\n"), myClass.operator const TCHAR *()); However, I don't want to cast. How can this be achieved? Note, that a possibility is to create a function that has a parameter of const TCHAR*, so that it forcible calls the operator TCHAR*, but this I also don't want to implement.

  • Adding two different Objects by overloading operator+ C++

    - by lampshade
    Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to add a private member from Object A, to a private member from Object B. Both Cat and Dog Class's inheriate from the base class Animal. I have a thrid class 'MyClass', that I want to inheriate the private members of the Cat and Dog class. So in MyClass, I have a friend function to overload the + operator. THe friend function is defined as follows: MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj); I want to access dObj.age and cObj.age within the above function, invoke by this statement in main: mObj = dObj + cObj; Here is the entire source for a complete reference into the class objects: #include <iostream> #include <vld.h> using namespace std; class Animal { public : Animal() {}; virtual void eat() = 0 {}; virtual void walk() = 0 {}; }; class Dog : public Animal { public : Dog(const char * name, const char * gender, int age); Dog() : name(NULL), gender(NULL), age(0) {}; virtual ~Dog(); void eat(); void bark(); void walk(); private : char * name; char * gender; int age; }; class Cat : public Animal { public : Cat(const char * name, const char * gender, int age); Cat() : name(NULL), gender(NULL), age(0) {}; virtual ~Cat(); void eat(); void meow(); void walk(); private : char * name; char * gender; int age; }; class MyClass : private Cat, private Dog { public : MyClass() : action(NULL) {}; void setInstance(Animal &newInstance); void doSomething(); friend MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj); private : Animal * action; }; Cat::Cat(const char * name, const char * gender, int age) : name(new char[strlen(name)+1]), gender(new char[strlen(gender)+1]), age(age) { if (name) { size_t length = strlen(name) +1; strcpy_s(this->name, length, name); } else name = NULL; if (gender) { size_t length = strlen(gender) +1; strcpy_s(this->gender, length, gender); } else gender = NULL; if (age) { this->age = age; } } Cat::~Cat() { delete name; delete gender; age = 0; } void Cat::walk() { cout << name << " is walking now.. " << endl; } void Cat::eat() { cout << name << " is eating now.. " << endl; } void Cat::meow() { cout << name << " says meow.. " << endl; } void Dog::bark() { cout << name << " says woof.. " << endl; } void Dog::walk() { cout << name << " is walking now.." << endl; } void MyClass::setInstance(Animal &newInstance) { action = &newInstance; } void MyClass::doSomething() { action->walk(); action->eat(); } MyClass operator+(const Dog &dObj, const Cat &cObj) { MyClass A; //dObj.age; //cObj.age; return A; } int main() { MyClass mObj; Dog dObj("B", "Male", 4); Cat cObj("C", "Female", 5); mObj.setInstance(dObj); // set the instance specific to the object. mObj.doSomething(); // something happens based on which object is passed in dObj.bark(); mObj.setInstance(cObj); mObj.doSomething(); cObj.meow(); mObj = dObj + cObj; return 0; }

  • Compile error with initializer_list when trying to use it to initialize member value of class

    - by ilektron
    I am trying to make a class initializable from an initialization_list in a class constructor's constructor's initialization list. It works for a std::map, but not for my custom class. I don't see any difference other than templates are used in std::map. #include <iostream> #include <initializer_list> #include <string> #include <sstream> #include <map> using std::string; class text_thing { private: string m_text; public: text_thing() { } text_thing(text_thing& other); text_thing(std::initializer_list< std::pair<const string, const string> >& il); text_thing& operator=(std::initializer_list< std::pair<const string, const string> >& il); operator string() { return m_text; } }; class static_base { private: std::map<string, string> m_test_map; text_thing m_thing; static_base(); public: static static_base& getInstance() { static static_base instance; return instance; } string getText() { return (string)m_thing; } }; typedef std::pair<const string, const string> spair; text_thing::text_thing(text_thing& other) { m_text = other.m_text; } text_thing::text_thing(std::initializer_list< std::pair<const string, const string> >& il) { std::stringstream text_gen; for (auto& apair : il) { text_gen << "{" << apair.first << ", " << apair.second << "}" << std::endl; } } text_thing& text_thing::operator=(std::initializer_list< std::pair<const string, const string> >& il) { std::stringstream text_gen; for (auto& apair : il) { text_gen << "{" << apair.first << ", " << apair.second << "}" << std::endl; } return *this; } static_base::static_base() : m_test_map{{"test", "1"}, {"test2", "2"}}, // Compiler fine with this m_thing{{"test", "1"}, {"test2", "2"}} // Compiler doesn't like this { } int main() { std::cout << "Starting the program" << std::endl; std::cout << "The text thing: " << std::endl << static_base::getInstance().getText(); } I get this compiler output g++ -O0 -g3 -Wall -c -fmessage-length=0 -std=c++11 -MMD -MP -MF"static_base.d" -MT"static_base.d" -o "static_base.o" "../static_base.cpp" Finished building: ../static_base.cpp Building file: ../test.cpp Invoking: GCC C++ Compiler g++ -O0 -g3 -Wall -c -fmessage-length=0 -std=c++11 -MMD -MP -MF"test.d" -MT"test.d" -o "test.o" "../test.cpp" ../test.cpp: In constructor ‘static_base::static_base()’: ../test.cpp:94:40: error: no matching function for call to ‘text_thing::text_thing(<brace-enclosed initializer list>)’ m_thing{{"test", "1"}, {"test2", "2"}} ^ ../test.cpp:94:40: note: candidates are: ../test.cpp:72:1: note: text_thing::text_thing(std::initializer_list<std::pair<const std::basic_string<char>, const std::basic_string<char> > >&) text_thing::text_thing(std::initializer_list< std::pair<const string, const string> >& il) ^ ../test.cpp:72:1: note: candidate expects 1 argument, 2 provided ../test.cpp:67:1: note: text_thing::text_thing(text_thing&) text_thing::text_thing(text_thing& other) ^ ../test.cpp:67:1: note: candidate expects 1 argument, 2 provided ../test.cpp:23:2: note: text_thing::text_thing() text_thing() ^ ../test.cpp:23:2: note: candidate expects 0 arguments, 2 provided make: *** [test.o] Error 1 Output of gcc -v Using built-in specs.   • Why aren't operator conversions implicitly called for templated functions? (C++)

    - by John Gordon
    I have the following code: template <class T> struct pointer { operator pointer<const T>() const; }; void f(pointer<const float>); template <typename U> void tf(pointer<const float>); void g() { pointer<float> ptr; f(ptr); tf(ptr); } When I compile the code with gcc 4.3.3 I get a message (aaa.cc:17: error: no matching function for call to ‘tf(pointer<float>&)’) indicating that the compiler called 'operator pointer<const T>' for the non-templated function f(), but didn't for the templated function tf(). Why and is there any workaround short of overloading tf() with a const and non-const version? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • MySQL Query performance - huge difference in time

    - by Damo
    I have a query that is returning in vastly different amounts of time between 2 datasets. For one set (database A) it returns in a few seconds, for the other (database B)....well I haven't waited long enough yet, but over 10 minutes. I have dumped both of these databases to my local machine where I can reproduce the issue running MySQL 5.1.37. Curiously, database B is smaller than database A. A stripped down version of the query that reproduces the problem is: SELECT * FROM po_shipment ps JOIN po_shipment_item psi USING (ship_id) JOIN po_alloc pa ON ps.ship_id = pa.ship_id AND pa.UID_items = psi.UID_items JOIN po_header ph ON pa.hdr_id = ph.hdr_id LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev0 ON ev0.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev0.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS0' LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev1 ON ev1.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev1.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS1' LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev2 ON ev2.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev2.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS2' LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev3 ON ev3.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev3.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS3' LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev4 ON ev4.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev4.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS4' LEFT JOIN EVENT_TABLE ev5 ON ev5.TABLE_ID1 = ps.ship_id AND ev5.EVENT_TYPE = 'MAS5' WHERE ps.eta >= '2010-03-22' GROUP BY ps.ship_id LIMIT 100; There are no differences in the table structure, indexes, keys etc between these databases (I have done show create tables and diff'd them). The sizes of the tables are: database A: po_shipment 1776 po_shipment_item 1945 po_alloc 36298 po_header 71642 EVENT_TABLE 1608 database B: po_shipment 463 po_shipment_item 470 po_alloc 3291 po_header 56149 EVENT_TABLE 1089 Some points to note: Removing the WHERE clause makes the query return < 1 sec. Removing the GROUP BY makes the query return < 1 sec. Removing ev5, ev4, ev3 etc makes the query get faster for each one removed. Can anyone suggest how to resolve this issue? What have I missed? Many Thanks.

  • Why can't I sort this container?

    Please don't mind that there is no insert fnc and that data are hardcoded. I think the best way to check what's going on is to paste this code and run it first. Thanks

  • Error when compiling FXAA shader

    - by mulletdevil
    I am getting the following error when compiling the FXAA shader downloaded from here http://timothylottes.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/fxaa-311-released.html Fxaa3_11.h(934,5): error x4000: Use of potentially uninitialized variable (FxaaPixelShader) Here is the line in the shader if(earlyExit) #if (FXAA_DISCARD == 1) FxaaDiscard; #else return rgbyM; #endif Does anyone know what may be causing this? I have not changed any values in that shader. • Storing objects in the array

    - by Ockonal
    Hello, I want to save boost signals objects in the map (association: signal name ? signal object). The signals signature is different, so the second type of map should be boost::any. map<string, any> mSignalAssociation; The question is how to store objects without defining type of new signal signature? typedef boost::signals2::signal<void (int KeyCode)> sigKeyPressed; mSignalAssociation.insert(make_pair("KeyPressed", sigKeyPressed())); // This is what I need: passing object without type definition mSignalAssociation["KeyPressed"] = (typename boost::signals2::signal<void (int KeyCode)>()); // One more trying which won't work. • Code Complete 2ed, composition and delegation.

    - by Arlukin
    Hi there. After a couple of weeks reading on this forum I thought it was time for me to do my first post. I'm currently rereading Code Complete. I think it's 15 years since the last time, and I find that I still can't write code ;-) Anyway on page 138 in Code Complete you find this coding horror example. (I have removed some of the code) class Emplyee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; ... bool IsZipCodeValid( Address address); ... private: ... } What Steve thinks is bad is that the functions are loosely related. Or has he writes "There's no logical connection between employees and routines that check ZIP codes, phone numbers or job classifications" Ok I totally agree with him. Maybe something like the below example is better. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid() const; ... } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; ... } class Employee { public: Address GetAddress() const; ... } When checking if the zip is valid you would need to do something like this. employee.GetAddress().GetZipCode().IsValid(); And that is not good regarding to the Law of Demeter ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Demeter][1]). So if you like to remove two of the three dots, you need to use delegation and a couple of wrapper functions like this. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid(); } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetZipCode()->IsValid()); } class Employee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetAddress()->IsZipCodeValid()); PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; } employee.IsZipCodeValid(); But then again you have routines that has no logical connection. I personally think that all three examples in this post are bad. Is it some other way that I haven't thougt about? //Daniel

  • How to declare a(n) vector/array of reducer objects in Cilk++?

  • How to declare a vector or array of reducer objects in Cilk++?

    - by Jin
    Hi All, I had a problem when I am using Cilk++, an extension to C++ for parallel computing. I found that I can't declare a vector of reducer objects: typedef cilk::reducer_opadd<int> T_reducer; vector<T_reducer> bitmiss_vec; for (int i = 0; i < 24; ++i) { T_reducer r; bitmiss_vec.push_back(r); } However, when I compile the code with Cilk++, it complains at the push_back() line: cilk++ geneAttack.cilk -O1 -g -lcilkutil -o geneAttack   • QTreeView memory consumption

    - by Eye of Hell
    Hello. I'm testing QTreeView functionality right now, and i was amazed by one thing. It seems that QTreeView memory consumption depends on items count O_O. This is highly unusual, since model-view containers of such type only keeps track for items being displayed, and rest of items are in the model. I have written a following code with a simple model that holds no data and just reports that it has 10 millions items. With MFC, Windows API or .NET tree / list with such model will take no memory, since it will display only 10-20 visible elements and will request model for more upon scrolling / expanding items. But with Qt, such simple model results in ~300Mb memory consumtion. Increasing number of items will increase memory consumption. Maybe anyone can hint me what i'm doing wrong? :) #include <QtGui/QApplication> #include <QTreeView> #include <QAbstractItemModel> class CModel : public QAbstractItemModel { public: QModelIndex index ( int i_nRow, int i_nCol, const QModelIndex& i_oParent = QModelIndex() ) const { return createIndex( i_nRow, i_nCol, 0 ); } public: QModelIndex parent ( const QModelIndex& i_oInex ) const { return QModelIndex(); } public: int rowCount ( const QModelIndex& i_oParent = QModelIndex() ) const { return i_oParent.isValid() ? 0 : 1000 * 1000 * 10; } public: int columnCount ( const QModelIndex& i_oParent = QModelIndex() ) const { return 1; } public: QVariant data ( const QModelIndex& i_oIndex, int i_nRole = Qt::DisplayRole ) const { return Qt::DisplayRole == i_nRole ? In asp classic and vbscript, you can declare a Const with a hexidecial value, and a date type value: Const C_LIGHTCYAN = &hCCFFEE Const C_STARTDATE = #1 JAN 2000# But how can I declare currency, single or doubles data types? • Header Guard Issues - Getting Swallowed Alive

    - by gjnave
    I'm totally at wit's end: I can't figure out how my dependency issues. I've read countless posts and blogs and reworked my code so many times that I can't even remember what almost worked and what didnt. I continually get not only redefinition errors, but class not defined errors. I rework the header guards and remove some errors simply to find others. I somehow got everything down to one error but then even that got broke while trying to fix it. • Linked List manipulation, issues retrieving data c++

    - by floatfil
    I'm trying to implement some functions to manipulate a linked list. The implementation is a template typename T and the class is 'List' which includes a 'head' pointer and also a struct: struct Node { // the node in a linked list T* data; // pointer to actual data, operations in T Node* next; // pointer to a Node }; Since it is a template, and 'T' can be any data, how do I go about checking the data of a list to see if it matches the data input into the function? The function is called 'retrieve' and takes two parameters, the data and a pointer: bool retrieve(T target, T*& ptr); // This is the prototype we need to use for the project "bool retrieve : similar to remove, but not removed from list. If there are duplicates in the list, the first one encountered is retrieved. Second parameter is unreliable if return value is false. E.g., " Employee target("duck", "donald"); success = company1.retrieve(target, oneEmployee); if (success) { cout << "Found in list: " << *oneEmployee << endl; } And the function is called like this: company4.retrieve(emp3, oneEmployee) So that when you cout *oneEmployee, you'll get the data of that pointer (in this case the data is of type Employee). (Also, this is assuming all data types have the apropriate overloaded operators) I hope this makes sense so far, but my issue is in comparing the data in the parameter and the data while going through the list. (The data types that we use all include overloads for equality operators, so oneData == twoData is valid) This is what I have so far: template <typename T> bool List<T>::retrieve(T target , T*& ptr) { List<T>::Node* dummyPtr = head; // point dummy pointer to what the list's head points to for(;;) { if (*dummyPtr->data == target) { // EDIT: it now compiles, but it breaks here and I get an Access Violation error. ptr = dummyPtr->data; // set the parameter pointer to the dummy pointer return true; // return true } else { dummyPtr = dummyPtr->next; // else, move to the next data node } } return false; } Here is the implementation for the Employee class: //-------------------------- constructor ----------------------------------- Employee::Employee(string last, string first, int id, int sal) { idNumber = (id >= 0 && id <= MAXID? id : -1); salary = (sal >= 0 ? sal : -1); lastName = last; firstName = first; } //-------------------------- destructor ------------------------------------ // Needed so that memory for strings is properly deallocated Employee::~Employee() { } //---------------------- copy constructor ----------------------------------- Employee::Employee(const Employee& E) { lastName = E.lastName; firstName = E.firstName; idNumber = E.idNumber; salary = E.salary; } //-------------------------- operator= --------------------------------------- Employee& Employee::operator=(const Employee& E) { if (&E != this) { idNumber = E.idNumber; salary = E.salary; lastName = E.lastName; firstName = E.firstName; } return *this; } //----------------------------- setData ------------------------------------ // set data from file bool Employee::setData(ifstream& inFile) { inFile >> lastName >> firstName >> idNumber >> salary; return idNumber >= 0 && idNumber <= MAXID && salary >= 0; } //------------------------------- < ---------------------------------------- // < defined by value of name bool Employee::operator<(const Employee& E) const { return lastName < E.lastName || (lastName == E.lastName && firstName < E.firstName); } //------------------------------- <= ---------------------------------------- // < defined by value of inamedNumber bool Employee::operator<=(const Employee& E) const { return *this < E || *this == E; } //------------------------------- > ---------------------------------------- // > defined by value of name bool Employee::operator>(const Employee& E) const { return lastName > E.lastName || (lastName == E.lastName && firstName > E.firstName); } //------------------------------- >= ---------------------------------------- // < defined by value of name bool Employee::operator>=(const Employee& E) const { return *this > E || *this == E; } //----------------- operator == (equality) ---------------- // if name of calling and passed object are equal, // return true, otherwise false // bool Employee::operator==(const Employee& E) const { return lastName == E.lastName && firstName == E.firstName; } //----------------- operator != (inequality) ---------------- // return opposite value of operator== bool Employee::operator!=(const Employee& E) const { return !(*this == E); } //------------------------------- << --------------------------------------- // display Employee object ostream& operator<<(ostream& output, const Employee& E) { output << setw(4) << E.idNumber << setw(7) << E.salary << " " << E.lastName << " " << E.firstName << endl; return output; } I will include a check for NULL pointer but I just want to get this working and will test it on a list that includes the data I am checking. Thanks to whoever can help and as usual, this is for a course so I don't expect or want the answer, but any tips as to what might be going wrong will help immensely!

  • Specializing function template for both std::string and char*

    - by sad_man
    As the title says I want to specialize a function template for both string and char pointer, so far I did this but I can not figure out passing the string parameters by reference. #include <iostream> #include <string> template<typename T> void xxx(T param) { std::cout << "General : "<< sizeof(T) << std::endl; } template<> void xxx<char*>(char* param) { std::cout << "Char ptr: "<< strlen(param) << std::endl; } template<> void xxx<const char* >(const char* param) { std::cout << "Const Char ptr : "<< strlen(param)<< std::endl; } template<> void xxx<const std::string & >(const std::string & param) { std::cout << "Const String : "<< param.size()<< std::endl; } template<> void xxx<std::string >(std::string param) { std::cout << "String : "<< param.size()<< std::endl; } int main() { xxx("word"); std::string aword("word"); xxx(aword); std::string const cword("const word"); xxx(cword); } Also template<> void xxx<const std::string & >(const std::string & param) thing just does not working. If I rearranged the opriginal template to accept parameters as T& then the char * is required to be char * & which is not good for static text in code. Please help !
