  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information You might have seen the following dreadful message - As this post on blogs.msdn.com details out, this is due to a health analyzer rule configured in SharePoint. While that blogpost does a great job explaining why this monitoring is necessary, how you can tweak it, it still becomes a nuisance on SharePoint virtual machines used for development. It also becomes a nuisance on production environments because SharePoint databases are set to auto grow. In other words, as the database is being used, it only grows, and grows, and GROWS! • Coding with laptop and external screen - neck, back, comfort ...

  Guess I'm not the only one here coding on laptop + external keyboard + external screen. I can't really decide. Figure 1: Putting screen directly in front of (upright) my eyes and move laptop to the side. That feels like more comfortable but I can't really see so good to 15" laptop which is now quite away. Feels unused. Figure 2: Putting laptop in front of me and move external monitor on side. Feels like more efficient space usage, but I am afraid that my neck/back might start hurting since I need to turn my head often. What do you prefer? Some good advice? Sacrificing health is definitely no option here so that's why I'm worried and asking this silly question. Thanks

• Managed servers getting down regularly by Node Manager. WAD?

  Recently I have been working on a service request where several instances were running, and several technologies were being used, including SOA, BAM, BPEL and others. At a first glance, this may seem to be a Node Manager problem. But on this situation, the problem was at JMS - Persistent Store level. Node Manager can automatically restart Managed Servers that have the "failed" health state, or have shut down unexpectedly due to a system crash or reboot. As a matter of fact, from the provided log files it was clear that the instance was becoming unhealthy because of a persist6ent Store problem. So finally, the problem here was not with Node Manager as it was working as designed, and the restart was being caused by the Persistent Store. After this Persistent Store problem was fixed, everuthing went fine. This particular issue that I worked was on an Exalogic machine, but note that this may happen on any hardware running Weblogic.

  Wow, two blog entries in the same day! When I wrote the large 'Quota' blog entry below, I did not realize there would be a micro-code update going out the same evening. So here it is. Code 2011.1.4.2 has just been released. You can get the readme file for it here: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/FishWorks/ak-2011.04.24.4.2+Release+Notes Download it, of course, through the MOS website. It looks like it fixes a pretty nasty bug. Get it if you think it applies to you. Unless you have a great reason NOT to upgrade, I would strongly advise you to upgrade to 2011.1.4.2. Why? Because the readme file says they STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU ALL UPGRADE TO THIS CODE IMMEDIATELY using LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. That's good enough for me. Be sure to run the health check like the readme tells you to.

• Why does the homepage rank in exact match and not in broad anymore? [closed]

  My website was ranking on page one for "walking shoes reviews" in broad and exact. It has disappeared in the rankings for broad and yet still ranks in exact match. No indication in the Webmaster tools of anything wrong yet Google analytics shows no more activity. his occurred sometime after Panda and Penguin. Not sure which because I didn't check closely for a while, this is a fun site for me. I walk for the enjoyment and health benefits so I built this site.

  The process of Extracting, Transforming, and Loading data in to a data warehouse is called Extract Transform Load (ETL) process.  This process can be used to obtain, analyze, and clean data from various data sources so that it can be stored in a uniform manner within a data warehouse. This data can then be used by various business intelligence processes to provide an organization with more of an in depth analysis of the current state of the company and where it is heading. • If we write iOS and sell on App Store, are we protected for legal consequences? [closed]

  Will the developer or company (is a corporation or is not) be responsible for legal consequences, or will they be covered and protected by the Apple Store Terms of Use agreement? For example: 1) the app is fun and the kids show the app to a parent who is driving the car, and got into an accident. 2) if the app does road navigation and it went into problem or crash or slow, and caused an accident while driving. 3) or if the terms require using an app in a safe and non-time critical situation, what if the app recommend some exercise routine or diet (such as suggesting eating more eggs, milk, or using some herbs), and it could be argued that they caused any health consequence?

• Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• Is there a way to ‘join’ (block) in POSIX threads, without exiting the joinee?

  I’m buried in multithreading / parallelism documents, trying to figure out how to implement a threading implementation in a programming language I’ve been designing. I’m trying to map a mental model to the pthreads.h library, but I’m having trouble with one thing: I need my interpreter instances to continue to exist after they complete interpretation of a routine (the language’s closure/function data type), because I want to later assign other routines to them for interpretation, thus saving me the thread and interpreter setup/teardown time. This would be fine, except that pthread_join(3) requires that I call pthread_exit(3) to ‘unblock’ the original thread. How can I block the original thread (when it needs the result of executing the routine), and then unblock it when interpretation of the child routine is complete?

  This is similar to my previous efforts (wordEnds and repeatEnd): as a mental exercise, I want to solve this toy problem using regex only. Description from codingbat.com: Given a string and a non-empty word string, return a version of the original string where all chars have been replaced by pluses ("+"), except for appearances of the word string which are preserved unchanged. plusOut("12xy34", "xy") ? "++xy++" plusOut("12xy34", "1") ? "1+++++" plusOut("12xy34xyabcxy", "xy") ? "++xy++xy+++xy" There is no mention whether or not to allow overlap (e.g. what is plusOut("+xAxAx+", "xAx")?), but my non-regex solution doesn't handle overlap and it passes, so I guess we can assume non-overlapping occurrences of word if it makes it simpler. In any case, I'd like to solve this using regex (of the same style that I did before with the other two problems), but I'm absolutely stumped. I don't even have anything to show, because I have nothing that works. So let's see what the stackoverflow community comes up with.

• IM (Instant Messaging) increase or decrease developer's productivity?

  In my team I have some developers that always have two or three IM windows open. The majority of these windows are not related with the project where they are nor with asking or offering programming help. I also use IM and, off course, some of my "talks" are not related with the job. But I feel that when I am using IM my productivity drops. I mean, there is more "mental" work to change the scope between the task I am doing and the conversation every time a new message arrive. Do you face the same situation? Is there some good practices to avoid this (excluding, off course, stopping using IM)?

  Having a mental block today, need a hand verifying my logic isn't fubar'ed. Traditionally I would do file i/o similar to this: FileStream fs = null; // So it's visible in the finally block try { fs = File.Open("Foo.txt", FileMode.Open); /// Do Stuff } catch(IOException) { /// Handle Stuff } finally { if (fs != null) fs.Close(); } However, this isn't very elegant. Ideally I'd like to use the using block to dispose of the filestream when I'm done, however I am unsure about the synergy between using and try/catch. This is how i'd like to implement the above: try { using(FileStream fs = File.Open("Foo.txt", FileMode.Open)) { /// Do Stuff } } catch(Exception) { /// Handle Stuff } However, I'm worried that a premature exit (via thrown exception) from within the using block may not allow the using block to complete execution and clean up it's object. Am I just paranoid, or will this actually work the way I intend it to?

• MS SQL Bridge Table Constraints

  Greetings - I have a table of Articles and a table of Categories. An Article can be used in many Categories, so I have created a table of ArticleCategories like this: BridgeID int (PK) ArticleID int CategoryID int Now, I want to create constraints/relationships such that the ArticleID-CategoryID combinations are unique AND that the IDs must exist in the respective primary key tables (Articles and Categories). I have tried using both VS2008 Server Explorer and Enterprise Manager (SQL-2005) to create the FK relationships, but the results always prevent Duplicate ArticleIDs in the bridge table, even though the CategoryID is different. I am pretty sure I am doing something obviously wrong, but I appear to have a mental block at this point. Can anyone tell me please how should this be done? Greaty appreciated!

• PHP Unlink function Woes on Windows

  Hello all, I am having problems with the PHP function unlink. I keep getting this error: Warning: unlink(C:\wamp\www\webs\db\db_1276259188.mdb) [function.unlink]: Permission denied in C:\wamp\www\webs\pure-php-export.php on line 242 I am on a windows machine where Apache runs as the user SYSTEM. I have set the permissions of the db folder as "Full Control" for Apache's user. I thought my script might still be holding on to that file (its an uploaded file that gets used via PDO). try{ $dbh = new PDO("odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb)};Dbq=$mdbFilename", $username, $password); }catch(PDOException $e){ echo $e->getMessage(); } So before I attempt to delete the file I unset the above and try to delete like so: $dbh = null; unset($dbh); if(is_file($mdbFilename)){ unlink($mdbFilename); } I really appreciate any help on this as it has been driving me mental for the past two hours! • JAVA Classes in Game programming.

  I'm doing a little strategy game to help me learn Java in a fun way. The thing is I visioned the units as objects that would self draw on the game map (using images and buffering) and would react to the mouse actions with listeners attached to them. Now, based on some tutorials I've been reading regarding basic game programming, all seems to be drawn in the Graphics method of my Map class. If a new unit emerges, i just update the Map.Graphics method, it's not as easy as making a new Unit object which would self draw... In this case, I'd be stuck with a whole bunch of Map methods instead of using classes for rendering new things. So my question is, is it possible to use classes for rendering units, interface objects, etc, or i'll have to create methods and just do some kind of structural programming instead of object oriented? I'm a little bit confused and I'd like to have a mental blueprint of how things would be organized. Thanks!

• Server 2008 Web Edition IIS6 SMTP conflict

  I'm using IIS6 Manager to setup the SMTP service on Windows Server 2008 Web Edition. Ignoring how mental this is, there seems to be a conflict (port 25?) which means that I cannot start and stop the Default SMTP server within IIS6. I can start and stop it with the services.msc snap in and this is reflected in state of the SMTP server in IIS6 manager. I'm worried that none of the settings I want to get at within IIS6 (logging, authentication etc..) are having any effect. None of these settings are available within IIS7 in Web Edition. Idiotic.

• iPad split controller that doesn't hide the left pane in portrait

  I am trying to implement a split view controller like UISplitViewController on the iPad, but I don't want the left pane to be hidden when the device is in portrait orientation. So I've created a UIViewController subclass for this in IB and it works fine without any sub-view controllers. Now I'm trying to wrap my head around what is required to setup and manage the two UIViewController objects for the left and right panes. In my app, they are going to both be UINavigationController with a UITableView in them. I've hit a mental road block about how to set this up and was hoping someone could point me to some sample code or give me a recommendation for architecture here...

  Hi, I have a file which is crashing while rendering. File contains 50+ reference nodes. polycount : (lks)2,59,49,150; textures : (ths)2,628. It is being rendered in mental ray. All textures are .map. The attached image has the machine cofiguration with page file. here is the log file when the file crashes. what is the line in the log file mean. How to solve this. • PL/SQL pre-compile and Code Quality checks in an automatted build environment?

  We build software using Hudson and Maven. We have C#, java and last, but not least PL/SQL sources (sprocs, packages, DDL, crud) For C# and Java we do unit tests and code analysis, but we don't really know the health of our PL/SQL sources before we actually publish them to the target database. Requirements There are a couple of things we wan't to test in the following priority: Are the sources valid, hence "compilable"? For packages, with respect to a certain database, would they compile? Code Quality: Do we have code flaws like duplicates, too complex methods or other violations to a defined set of rules? Also, the tool must run head-less (commandline, ant, ...) we wan't to do analysis on a partial code base (changed sources only) Tools We did a little research and found the following tools that could potencially help: Cast Application Intelligence Platform (AIP): Seems to be a server that grasps information about "anything". Couldn't find a console version that would export in readable format. Toad for Oracle: The Professional version is said to include something called Xpert validates a set of rules against a code base. Sonar + PL/SQL-Plugin: Uses Toad for Oracle to display code-health the sonar-way. This is for browsing the current state of the code base. Semantic Designs DMSToolkit: Quite general analysis of source code base. Commandline available? Semantic Designs Clones Detector: Detects clones. But also via command line? Fortify Source Code Analyzer: Seems to be focussed on security issues. But maybe it is extensible? more... So far, Toad for Oracle together with Sonar seems to be an elegant solution. But may be we are missing something here? Any ideas? Other products? Experiences? • What skills are needed to be successful at robotics?

  I'm considering studying to be a robotics engineer. The desire to work in that field is definitely there.. but I'm wondering what my chances of success would be. Generally I'm good with mental tasks of any sort such as programming, maths, physics, etc, and I think i'd be able to do electrical work such as soldering wires, changing batteries, etc. However, I'm not so good with things of a physical nature where I have to use my hands. For example, if you give me some vegetables to slice and dice, all of them will be diced un-evenly and some will look ugly. This might be because I have poor mind-hand coordination or because of a lack of concentration. Thoughts?

• Is System.AddIn mostly about making it easier to use Remoting or does it make it harder to do so?

  It takes at least 7 assemblies and restricting my AddIn's data model to data types that remoting can deal with before the appdomain isolation features begin to work. It is so complex! The System.AddIn teams blog implies to me they were trying to re-create a mental model of COM, a model I never understood very well in the first place and am not sold on the benefits. (If COM is so good why's it dead?-rhetorical question.) If I don't need to mirror or interop with legacy COM (like VSTO does using System.AddIn), is it possible to just create some classes that load load in a new AppDomain? I can write the discovery code my self, I've done it before and a naive implementation is pretty fast because I'm not like iterating over the assemblies in the GAC! So my specific question is, can I get the AppDomain isolation that AddIns provide with a few code Remoting snippets, and what would those be?

• If Possible, How Can One Set Either a Background Color on Cells within a Sizer or Gridlines for the

  I am flailing about with wxWidgets, in particular, the wx.Sizer in wxPython. I have read the documents, I have a copy of wXPython in Action before me, and have set aside the problem to work on other things a better mental model of sizers hopefully gestated within my skull. None of this has worked. I am not grokking, or even getting to the point where I can bang about usefully, how sizers work. In HTML, I could at least set a background color on some div or td, or call forth borders so I could see how things are laid out. Here, I have a grey expanse and no idea which of the nested static box sizers from which it originates. I am giving static box sizers after making a mess out of the grid bag sizers. Either alternative would let me at least get a handle on how these work.
