  • ESXI 5.1 - Unable to trunk to cisco switch

    I have configured my esxi host vSwitch1 to use the secondary NIC on my VMware host. On vSwitch1 configuration I have set the VLAN to 4095 which specifies to allow all VLANs. If my cisco switch port configuration is set to an access port my server can ping the vlan interface on the switch. If my cisco switch port configuration is set to a trunk, whilst it stays UP UP and CDP information is available, I lose my ping from VMware VM server to the local vlan interface on the switch and I lose any server connectivity to my network. He has written a complete blog post on this subject and I encourage all of you to go ahead and read it. Now personally I wanted to list every single comment here.   • Sound fails when I switch users

    Sound on my computer was working fine under 12.04 however when I upgraded to 12.10 I have encounter a strange problem where when I switch users instead of the first user having its sound swamped the sound of the first user keep playing and the second user can not play and thing. The sound setting for the second user only show a Dummy Output. If I reboot and log into the second user sound works fine but then if you switch to the first user it has a dummy output instead. What could would cause such a problem?

  • Make the Taskbar Buttons Switch to the Last Active Window in Windows 7

    The new Windows 7 taskbar’s Aero Peek feature, with the live thumbnails of every window, is awesome… but sometimes you just want to be able to click the taskbar button and have the last open window show up instead. Here’s a quick hack to make it work better. To better understand the problem, imagine having nine windows of the same type open on your screen, but you are primarily working in just one of the windows at a time. So every time you want to switch back, you have to click the taskbar button, and then choose the one you are using from the list, which can be pretty annoying… Now if you know your Windows 7 shortcuts, you’d know that you can simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the taskbar button, and the last window will show up. In fact, you can keep holding down the Ctrl key and keep clicking, and Windows will cycle through the open windows. It’s a useful shortcut, but hardly something you want to do every single time. Instead, we’ll use a quick registry hack to make the normal click switch to the last open window—if you still want to see the thumbnail list, just hover your mouse over the button for half a second to see the full list. Manual Registry Hack for Last Active Window Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then head down to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Once you’re there, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right hand side, give it the name LastActiveClick, and set the value to 1. Once you are done, it should look something like this: Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, or you can kill Explorer.exe through Task Manager and re-open it. Specifically, I have a "toggle touchpad on/off" script, which i want to run whenever I switch into or out of gvim. so, is there any kind of hook for that? even something that can be run whenever alt-tab is detected, as long as it can tell what window you're going from/to? I'm using gnome-shell, if that makes any difference.   • Cannot login to newly created user account

    Trying to switch accounts to my newly created account I get a black screen and then it takes me back to the main login screen after entering the correct password. Upon logging into my previously existing account I get: "System Program Problem Detected" Details: Executable path /usr/bin/Xorg Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.1 Details: Crash ... (tons more, but no way to copy paste or save) When I try to su su -l penner I get: No directory, logging in with HOME=/ I manually created the home directory and this error goes away but still no luck with the login. Seems something has gone wrong with the user creation? How can I correct this?

  • How to discriminate vertical from horizontal scroll on Kubuntu/KDE mouse action for switch Desktop

    Currently trying out KDE, and I'm a big user of multiple workspaces/desktops while I work. I've noticed that essentially, KDE isn't able (or doesn't bother?) to tell between my mouse's standard vertical scroll, and the left/right scroll that it has. Just FYI, my mouse has a pretty sensitive scroll wheel with no discernible "clicks" so I can easily make my desktop look like it's on crack. Here's what I'd like: vertical scroll does nothing when applied on desktop, but left/right scroll causes me to switch to previous/next desktop. Here's what happens now - per settings for Desktop Settings -- Mouse Actions: Whether I scroll up/down or if I click left/right, I switch desktops. Thanks for your help

    Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. Its key type is an Enum and its value type is a bool. If the boolean is true, I want to change the color of a label on a form. The variable names were changed for the example. I switched away from mysqli_real_escape_string as it does not escape % and _. However, when I create my query as a mysqli prepared statement, the same flaw is still present. The query pulls a users salt value based on their username. I'd do something similar for passwords and other lookups.     I've tried several methods to switch between two views in my program. I've tried creating a new thread then have the view run for 5 seconds before creating intent to start my main activity.   • What's the scope of a Python variable declared in an if statement?

The following code in a Python file (module) is confusing me slightly: if __name__ == '__main__': x = 1 print x In other languages I've worked in, this code would throw an exception, as the x variable is local to the if statement and should not exist outside of it. But this code executes, and prints 1. Can anyone explain this behavior? Are all variables declared in a module global/available to the entire module?
