• Find out ESXi host from VM? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Determining the name of the VMware host of a VM guest - from the guest 3 answers I have a monitor that is running on all guests, Windows and Linux. I'd like to send back the Parent host of the guest with this monitor, How can I found out the VM host from within a ESXi VM? Ideally I'm looking for a universal way to do this from both Windows and Linux, but if they are separate paths that okay. Using something from VMWare tools would be fine, but I'm not currently using anything running the vSphere API.

• sysprep'd Server 2008 R2 VMware autocheck BSODs

  I'm trying to set up a template Server 2k8 R2 (Standard) VM in our VMware ESXi environment, we'll need to deploy a whole lot of them and I want to (a) streamline and (b) standardise the server build process. Originally I built a sysprep answer file using WAIK and the Windows System Image Manager - once I'd run sysprep using this, restarting the machine resulted in a "autochk.exe not found - skipping autocheck" message, followed almost immediately by a BSOD. Rebooting just resulted in the same thing. I first assumed it was my answer file, but have now checked this on a physical machine and it works fine. I've reinstalled the OS on the machine (and NOTHING else), and run sysprep.exe (ticking Generalize) - this produces exactly the same result. I've also attempted to use the Customisation Wizard built in to VMware - again, the same autocheck message and BSOD is the result. Any ideas? Let me know any further information I need to provide...

  We're seeing some storage errors from the esxi logs relating to our MD3200. I'm sort of a VMWare noob and am not sure where to go from here because I couldn't find a lot of documentation on the VMWare website, and the forums didn't seem to have any posts about it with actual answers.   Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages. What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?   Hi, I install minix3 on vmware using installation CD i make using .iso image which is available @minix3 I make 2GB Harddisk, 512MB RAM on VMware, and installed step-by-step. It got installed and working fine. But i wana install 'packman' which is X window system. I'm not able to install it. It asks for installation CD, its still there and its detected also, but i couldn't proceed. Actually i install minix to learn Operating system design and Implementation :) Have any1 tried installing 'packman' i.e X window system on minix3. Please guide me. :)

• Grub2 menu after VMware guest customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

• Slow http traffic between VMWare guest and host.

  I have a web application running as an http server inside the VMWare guest OS, and I'm trying to access the content from the host OS. The guest is running Ubuntu, and the host is running Windows XP. The problem is, when I try to access the application from a browser in the host OS, the content takes a very long time to load (up to a minute for a single page). A browser in the guest OS can access the application with no problems. I've tried using both NAT and bridged networking, but the results are the same. The Windows firewall is turned off. The connection itself appears fine, as ping requests from guest to host as well as host to guest complete without errors or delays. Both guest and host can access the external Internet connection without a problem. I'm using VMWare Player. Any ideas?

• Resizing partition in VMware Fusion didn't work

  I migrated a Parallels VM to VMware Fusion. That worked well, although the original partition size was way too small (8GB). Following some instructions from VMware, I used the Fusion GUI to extend the size of the disk to 20GB, and then I booted from a GPartEd LiveCD to grow the C: partition to the full 20GB. That seemed to work, and I can see that the disk is 20GB in Disk Manager, but it still thinks the actual partition is 8GB. Here is a screenshot of it. What can I do to get the entire 20GB usable?

• VMware virtual network adapters and Windows Firewall

  I am running VMware Workstation 7.1.4 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1-U (x64). Aside from the physical network adapter, I have created a single virtual network adapter (VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1) which is connected to (can be seen by) the host and the guests. My problem is, even after applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak to the virtual adapter, making it disappear from the Network and Sharing Center, I still can't connect to programs running in the host from the guests, unless I specifically "allowed the program to communicate with the public network" using the Windows Firewall (which I don't want to do). This happens to all the programs and services running in the host (File and Printer Sharing, Database server, HTTP proxy, etc.) I am getting the impression that applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak only hides a network from the Network and Sharing Center but not actually making it private. Any hints and suggestions?

  Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

  Using VMware players on Windows 7 with a Ubuntu 10.04 guest. When I ping it resolves the ip address but the ping fails. Hopefully this is a local issue as I don't have access to any of the network equipment (routers, etc). vmware tools is installed. • Accessing VMware Player across the network

  My network: 192.168.2.2 (computer) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.2.254 (gateway) The VMplayer is: 192.168.233.129 (ip) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.233.255(bcast) It's obvious the player can't be access from other systems because of the wrong network settings. However, I am not sure as to how to change that. Obviously I have to edit the ifcg-eth0 but I know I also need to edit it on the host system to make it accessably. Is this done from inside VMware Player? Or do I need to edit the network devices? The host box is Windows. Inside VMware is Linux.

When I ls -l that directory in Ubuntu 11 it looks like: (2nd line) ls: cannot access item_spec.rb: No such file or directory -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 300 2012-01-11 12:05 user_spec.rb -????????? ? ? ? ? ? item_spec.rb How can I get the folder to "refresh"? I need to use this file in Ubuntu. I think it will be present if I restart the VM, but that seems excessive. This looks like a bug.   I want to create a small lab of VM's to test out networking with. I have two PC's running VMWare and I need the VM's on these two PC's to be connected to their own LAN. I am planning on bridging the VM's into my home network. My home network and PC's are in the 192.168.0.0 range, but I want my VM's to be in 10.1.0.0. If I do it this way (Bridging the VM's on both hosts into the network) will the VM's be able to communicate? Will my home router freak out seeing two different subnets? Is there another, easier way to connect the virtual lan's on two vmware workstations together?

  I am trying to find a solution where I can do the following: 1) Run a small footprint on my laptop 2) Run virtual instances of OS w/ no primary OS installed. • Can't access the Internet in VMware Workstation

  I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS. In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet. I've tried the following but with no success: Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work. Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC - neither of them work. I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months - previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?
