• Why does the MaxReceiveMessageSize in WCF matter in case of Streaming

  The default value of MaxReceiveMessageSize in WCF is 65,536.  When you choose streaming as TransferMode, WCF runtime will create 8192 as buffer size. So what happened now is that WCF channel stack will read the first 8192 bytes, and decode the first couple of bytes as the size of the entire envelope. The technical side of that I can manage, but I am worried about the costs escalating ridiculously high for both me and my customers Is there a way I can Limit how much each server can cost me before it will be deactivated See how much a server is currently costing me (so I can deduct it from their account) with it being extremely reliable as I don't want to have to have a giant bill in any possibility.

• Interviewing a DBA

  Our Company is in the Process of recuiting a DBA. I have built a group test of questions from basic questions such as Pk and Fk constraints, simple querries(fizzbuzz style) to more advanced things such as indexes, Collation, isolation levels and how to trace deadlocks. However, that is the limit of my knowledge. So my question to all the DBA's is what is the base level knowledge that all DBA's should have? We are really looking for someone that will be able to manage our replication, analyzing some of our slower running queries(that the devs can go to for help) and someone that can trace some of the deadlock issues that we are having. Any help would be most appreciated!

• Box2D Platform body not moving player body along with it

  I am creating a game using Box2D (Javascript implementation) - and I added the ability to have a static platform, that is moved along an axis as a function of a sine. My problem is when the player lands on the platform, as the platform moves along the X axis - the player is not moved along with it, as you visually would expect. The player can land on the object, and if it hits the side of the object, it does colide with it and is pushed. • Using a subset of GetHashCode() to increase AzureTable performance through partitioning

  Generally speaking, Azure Table IO performance improves as more partitions are used (with some tradeoffs in continuation tokens and batch updates I won't go into). Since the partition key is always a string I am considering using a "natural" load balancing technique based on a subset of the GetHashCode() of the partition key, and appending this subset to the partition key itself. This will allow all direct PK/RK queries to be computed with little overhead and with ease. Batch updates may just need an intermediate to group similar PKs together prior to submission. Question: Should I use GetHashCode() to compute the partition key? Is a better function available? If I use GetHashCode() does it matter which character I use for my PK? Is there an abstraction for Azure Table and Blob storage that does this for me already?

• When should a bullet texture be loaded in XNA?

  I'm making a SpaceWar!-esque game using XNA. I want to limit my ships to 5 active bullets at any time. I have a Bullet DrawableGameComponent and a Ship DrawableGameComponent. My Ship has an array of 5 Bullet. What is the best way to manage the Bullet textures? Specifically, when should I be calling LoadTexture? Right now, my solution is to populate the Bullet array in the Ship's constructor, with LoadTexture being called in the Bullet constructor. The Bullet objects will be disabled/not visible except when they are active. Does the texture really need to be loaded once for each individual instance of the bullet object? This seems like a very processor-intensive operation. Note: This is a small-scale project, so I'm OK with not implementing a huge texture-management framework since there won't be more than half a dozen or so in the entire game. I'd still like to hear about scalable solutions for future applications, though.

• how do you read from system.out in Java [closed]

  I'm trying to create a word scramble game and so far I have taken a vector of randomly assorted strings that contains both words and hints and split them into two vectors. I have randomly scrambled the word and set this all up in text boxes. Right now I'm stuck because I have a text box that takes input but I'm not sure how to read that in? I want the user to type the unscrambled word into the text box and have it calculate as correct and move on to the next word immediately. I also don't know how to get the keys working. I want the "?" character to be the hint button that shows the hint. At the moment the hint box works if I type the question mark in using the System.in but it doesn't work if I type it directly in to the text box. The characters are showing up in the text box but nothing is working after that.

• How important is Programming for a Level Designer?

  I'm currently attending school in a Level Design program, and I was wondering how important programming really is in being a Level Designer? I'm apparently incapable of learning programming (despite my best efforts), and tend to do very well in all other courses 3D modelling, story/character design, narrative and dialogue writing, environmental and conceptual design etc. I'm wondering if my strengths in the other areas are enough (with practice) to let me become a Level Designer, or I'm wasting my time if I can't program? I really want to be a Designer, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around the "language" of programming in general (Java kicks my teeth in even with tutoring and additional work on my own).

• Unity Dash to search only in Documents

  I have a document (LibreOffice Calc Spreadsheet) which is in my ~/Documents folder. However, I have the same file (older version of it) on a mounted drive. In the past few weeks I have opened the file from both my ~/Documents folder and from the mounted drive. However, the latest version is the one from ~/Documents. When I open the Dash and look in the documents lens, of course I will find my file twice there. One from the mounted disk and one from ~/Documents. But I don't know which one is which. So, my question is: How can I limit the document lens to look for documents only from my /home. Or to exclude mounted disks from the search. Thanks. I use Ubuntu 12.04.

• ban an IP temporarily after x-many incorrect password attempts

  My new web server got hacked (sigh). I have physical access to my machine (in the near future). It seems like the only changes was a new user account and a borked sudoers file. It seems as though the password was discovered by dictionary searching (I didn't pick it). After I fix these problems (or do a full reinstall?) I want to add a mechanism to ban an IP (for maybe 24 hours or some time limit) after getting the password wrong x number of times, but I'm not a unix sysadmin or anything, so I'm not really sure where to get started. The machine is running Lucid Lynx, from an Ubuntu minimal installation. Thanks,I appreciate your help guys. Hopefully this is the right place for this question.

• General visual effects to meshes/entities

  I am trying to add some visual effects to some entities, meshes, or whatever you want to call them as they are looking pretty dull in my game right now. Also I would like to know what is the best way to add effects like the one in the video to my game (for example, thunder effects, shattering, etc.) I know that I can do some things with shaders, but I haven't learned them too well and I am still in a beginner level.   I have two instances where I'd like to display information in a "justified" alignment - but I don't care if the values are switched in order. One example being displaying the usernames of people online: Anton Brother68 Commissar Dougheater Elflord Foobar Goop Hoo Iee Joo Rearranging them we could get exactly 22 characters long on each line: Anton Brother68 Foobar Commissar Elflord Goop Dougheater Hoo Iee Joo This is kind of a knapsack, except seems like there ought to be a P solution since I don't care about perfection, and I have multiple lines. Second instance is identical, except instead of names and character count I would be displaying random images and use their width.

• Why are most websites optimized for viewing in portrait mode?

  I simply cannot figure this out. Almost all monitors have an aspect ratio where width is much bigger than the height and yet almost all websites are designed exactly for the other way round? I am not really a web developer and am just experimenting stuff at the moment but this madness baffles me!!! Edit: The point is not that I would like to limit the height of a website. • Gamification: designing cooperation in an RPG like game based on Scrum methodology

  I have implemented with 3 friends a gamified system at my work (development company) which builds an fantasy rpg game over scrum project methodology. Generally, the tasks are the missions, each player is represented by a character. They earn XPs for completing tasks and they advance to the next levels which gives them badges, titles and (this is in planning phase) new privileges (e.g. priority in choosing tasks). Since the very beginning we try to do everything to avoid rivalisation between players because it would ruin the project if the players started to compete. There are no explicit leaderboards, we also plan to give bonuses for helping other players. I have a feeling that this is still not enough to really encourage cooperation. I would like to ask You for any ideas that come to Your mind that would help.

• Small-Scale Physics Engine

  I'm entering Android game development, and I already have a computer version of a game I want to publish. The thing is, I want to make this as good as it can be. With that said, I need a physics engine, really to only do one thing. That one thing is to make a parabolic movement of my main character as he's jumping in the air. Currently, my computer version simply makes the guy move up at a 45 degree angle, and as soon as it hits the ceiling, down at a 45 degree angle. I need a physics engine/library that would accomplish that, it has to be in java since that's my best language, it has to be 2D, and it has to be able to work on Android. Which physics engine/library could accomplish all of that?

• MySQL vs. SQL Server Go daddy, What is the difference bewteen hosted DB and App_Data Db

  I'm using Goddady for site hosting, and I'm currently using MySQL, because there are less limits on size,etc. My question is what is the difference between using a hosted Godaddy Db such as MySQL vs. creating a SQL Serverdatabase in the the App_Data folder? My guess is security? Would it be a bad idea to use a SQL ServerDB thats located in the App_Data folder? Additional Well I am able to create a .mdf (SQL Server DB file) in the App_Data folder, but I'm really unsure if should use that or not, If I did use it it would simplify using some of the Microsoft tools. Like I said my guess is that it would be less secure, but I don't really know. I know I have a 10gb, file system limit, so I'm assuming my db would have to share that space.

• Staying focussed - Any applications to monitor what windows are open, record the titles and then tell you what you spend you day doing?

  I am bad at procrastination. I'm always opening new tabs to check out HackerNews or something. So I've installed StayFocussed on Chromium, so that I can't view more than X minutes of certain sites. Is there something like this for the Ubuntu Desktop? It would work with applications, not websites (obviously). I would like an application that would monitor what windows I have open or visible, and limit me to only certain applications. Maybe give warnings if I spend to much time looking at IRC or something. Is there any applications for that?

  I'm trying to setup Spring dev environment (jenkins, tomcat) on Vagrant. What I really want to achieve is to limit config to only Puppet scripts, so I can share it with my colleagues and work together on the same environment. So far I managed to set up simple scripts to install jenkins, tomcat and so on, they work fine. What about jenkins configuration though? I'm pretty green in jenkins usage and configuration, not sure if I'm doing it the right way... I found this article and I want to migrate whole setup described in it to Puppet. Any ideas? Thanks.

• How to stop camera from rotating in 2.5d platformer

  I'm stuck with a problem: I can not make my camera stop rotating after character. What I already have tried: using empty game object with rigid body and locked rotation and make it parent of camera, while player being the parent of object. Also, I've tried using few scripts from web, that did not help. Right now I'm bad with using JS in Unity (can handle JS on website, but I dont know how to integrate it for now) and practicing the basics, making easy 2.5d platformer with basic features, so I can not write code for now.

• Point domain to 3rd Party DNS

  I have a few of domain names and a rather simple website (small company type thing). We are in the process of having a web designer create a new website for us, but I don't want to give access to the control panel for the domain names (and have no way to limit it, it seems), while at the same time I don't want to be the go between guy for it the settings. Is there a way or a service for me to point the domain's at a 3rd party DNS system, that I can then give access for the web designer, without worry that he can find my personal info or try and transfer my domain out. Thanks.
