• Fedora installed in Legacy mode, how to make it work in UEFI?

  I am trying to install a linux distribution on my new laptop. It's an MSI GE40 which comes preinstalled with windows 8. It's a UEFI machine. I have tried installing Ubuntu and Fedora with limited success. I've tried: running it in UEFI, UEFI with CSM mode, with secureboot enabled, ... with secureboot disabeled, ... with secureboot enabled but in user mode. I have had no success with any of these methods. With Ubuntu the grub loader shows up, but when I pick 'try ubuntu', or 'install ubuntu', it's just a blank screen(I've been using liveusb's btw). With Fedora, it'll show me the next screen on which it says 'binary authorised by vendor certificate' or 'Secure boot not enabled' and then stop doing anything. The closest thing to success I reached was switching to legacy mode to install Ubuntu, in which case I was able to get to the ubunutu installer but it wouldn't recognize windows 8 on my computer, so instead of continuing on I rebooted, and removed the USB pendrive to find my computer couldn't find windows 8. After a little dicking about I got it to find windows 8 again. Any ideas on how I should go about trying to install a distro on my computer? UPDATE:- So I ended up installing fedora using Legacy mode. To use both it and Windows at boot, I manually enter automatic repair so I can get to my UEFI settings and switch boot mode to UEFI to boot windows 8. I guess my question needs to be modified as to how do I get all of this to work in UEFI mode, so I can dual boot via selection through a bootloader, and not by repeatedly switching boot mode.

• Client unable to access OWA website after temporarily changing SSL certificate on the server

  I have the following issue: One client computer (Windows XP) cannot access the OWA website. All other client computers can (Except another one in the same remote office). How this happened: I temporarily changed the SSL certificate on the Exchange Server yesterday. After a few minutes, I reverted back, an now the same certificate that was installed for years is back again. During these few minutes, they were in OWA on this computer and got a certificate error. What exactly happens: Internet Explorer displays the error Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, Firefox displays The connection was reset and Crome shows This webpage is not available. The connection to ... was interrupted. What I already did to try to get this working: Restart the client computer Restart the exchange server Deleted Internet Explorer browsing history In IE, Internet Options, tab Content, under Certificates deletes SSL cache Restored Internet Explorer to the default parameters I looked into certmgr.msc, but did not find a certificate related to the issue What could I do else to narrow down the origin of this problem (or better: resolve it) ? Can you give any advice ?

• How to restart boot Windows 7 after upgrading to a SSHD on SONY VAIO with recovery discs?

  The original HDD on my Sony VAIO still works, but has a damaged sector 0 and I was constantly prompted to replace the HDD because of the imminent failure. I created recovery discs as instructed, used a USB external HDD for complete back up (including Windows image back up). After installing the SSHD and using recovery discs to upload Windows and boot, I am getting the Windows welcome screen. Right after that, I'm getting the following message: Windows couldn't complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation. I have tried repeating the process many times all kinds of different ways and I still receive the same message. Also, when I tried to change to partitioning as the other option offered, I get the message: Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware. All troubleshooting for hardware and PCU came out solid. I tried to load the image back up from the external drive, but can't load the driver. The computer doesn't see it. Does anyone have a clue or has encountered something similar?

• Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• Trouble in Team Viewer VPN Connection

  I have completed initial vpn connection setup. It has connected. I have tested with ping and it is ok. My problem is, when I want to start file transfer in VPN it asks for username & password. So what is the user name? I have tried giving Computer-Name/User-Name. I have found my Computer Name by going to Control Panel/System/ & clicking 'Computer Name' tab & username from user accounts or it is shown when I login in windows account (Please correct me if the above procedure is wrong). But what is the password? I have tried giving the account password but it always give 'The username or password is incorrect.' My Question: How to find the username & password? For Information: a) I have Team Viewer 7 installed in one Windows XP PC & one Windows 8 PC. I like to create a secure connection between these two PCs. b) The two PCs are connected in the same local network via a router. Please ask if you need additional information.

• Win 7 crashes, PC reboots and says "Hard drive 0 not found" until I turn if off and on again

  I recently made the move from Windows XP to Windows 7. Since then, when my computer is on for a few hours it always ends up rebooting without warning. Then the BIOS won't recognize my hard drive (hard drive 0 not found). If I turn off my computer and then on again, it boots normally. Some details: Dell Dimension 9150 Windows 7 I updated the BIOS I updated all system drivers with the latest version from Dell (SATA, Chipset, etc.) Other drivers updated too (Graphic card, sound, etc.) There is one thing that I tried after some Googling: I turned off the DMA access to the drives, but it's still rebooting after a few hours. Any clue? • How I can recover files when the folder shows empty but the files are not deleted?

  Yesterday, my laptop caught a virus which caused massive damage. Since them, I have been trying to recover important files before reformatting my computer, a task the virus has not made easy. Restoration points predating the attack have been deleted. Most of my folders show empty. My Start menu is essentially empty, with the exception of Trillian and Mirror's Edge. The same goes for my Desktop, which only has programs which were installed after the attack. Searching for files though my computer is pretty much useless, as it only rarely brings up anything. I suspect most of my files have not been deleted. While my folders show empty, uTorrent still does display them and I can open them from here. Unfortunately, when I select Open Containing Folder, the folder still shows as completely empty even if I'm currently watching a video from that very folder. Further adding evidence to the not-deleted, just-missing theory, the data recovery software I'm using (Restoration) cannot find only find an handful of the missing files. If they were deleted, I could do a forensic recovery to get them back but since they're probably still somewhere on my computer, just out out of my reach, I can't find them. Under those circumstances, is there a way I can recover those files?

• Windows 7 - All Icons Missing, Explorer Progress Bar Never Finishes, Libraries Gone

  since yesterday i've had three issues which all arose at the same time. windows 7 x64, i7 2.8ghz 12gb ddr3 1 - my libraries, favorites, drives are missing...basically the entire sidebar is gone. http://i.imgur.com/m8pRQ.png. yet when i open a dialog, my libraries and drives are back to normal ONLY for the dialog. i tried Restore Default Libraries. it works one time, but when i open libraries again i go back to the empty mess. restarting the computer temporarily fixes the problem. 2 - in the explorer window that's showing libraries, when i navigate to a certain folder i get an unending progress bar (the kind that turns the address bar green). yesterday when the problem started, i was saving a file to this folder. the program writing the file crashed during the write and i believe that's what caused the problem. i have sugarsync backing up that folder and when i restarted the computer sugarsync informed me that its database was corrupted, so i had to uninstall and reinstall the software. 3 - icons are missing. the Rebuild Icon Cache did not fix this. http://i.imgur.com/r9pgo.png restarting the computer temporarily fixes these problems, but when i open the directory with the initial write problem, everything stops working. edit: i should note that i did a chkdsk /f and it repaired problems. i also did the thing that verifies then restores windows files (can't remember the command now), which reported that everything was normal.

• Need help toubleshooting PC

  I have had problems since my dog pee'd on my computer. Problem: loads windows fine, at random intervals from 5 minutes to 30 minutes it restarts itself. There is nothing in the event log such as errors, no BSOD, just cold restart. after restarting - sometimes- it POST's and restarts itself at the end of POST. It will do this many times and then finally load windows. The cycle then begins again, it will restart eventually. What I have done: I thought it was HDD at first, since this is the only part of the computer which actually got wet with any fluid ( the case is off the PC and the dog pee'd down the front where the HDD is located). Seatool, the seagate HDD tool, found errors when I ran it inside windows, so I ran it in DOS mode from boo-table USB and ran it. It found the same number of errors and fixed them all. I ran the scan again and it says "Good". I loaded windows and ran the scan and it also said "Good there. So the HDD appears to be fine but the problem persists, random restarts. What else could this be? I have taken the computer apart and cleaned everything and also taken the PSU apart and cleaned it thoroughly. The problem still persists, what should my next steps be?

• Can't remote into Virtual PC

  I used to be able to remote into my Virtual PCs. It has been working for at least a year. Yesterday just stopped working... I cannot figure it out... Things I have triple-checked: 1. My Virtual PCs have "Allow Remote Access" checked. 2. My Virtual PCs have an account in the Administrator group that is password protected. 3. My Host's entry in the registry for the Terminal Services Port is still the default of 3389. So here is the strange thing. I can't even remote into the Virtual PC from it's host much less another PC... From the host, I can ping the Virtual PC and get a response but when trying to remote into it from the host I get the following error: Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: 1)Remote access to the server is not enabled. 2)The remote computer is turned off 3)The remote computer is not available on the network My host is running Windows 7. Virtual PCs are running XP. Thank you for looking at this!

• Soundtest works, but no other sounds and windows starts very slowly

  So suddenly all sounds on my computer stopped working expect the sound test works, but when I go to control panel and audio it says there's no audio device. And audio players and audio on website doesn't work either. and Also windows starts very slowly. I'm not sure if this helps but I'll tell what happened before this. I downloaded this program from a little shady website, I hesitated and for a good reason I guess cos the moment I finished downloading it, my antivir detected it as unwanted program and put it on quarantine. I thought everything was fine, but had some problems with program (won't go to details about it cos it's not really related to audio) so rebooted the computer and I was suprised that windows started really really slowly. It took like 5 mins to load the desktop such. After that I noticed the sounds were missing, I immediately deleted the program since I thought it was causing the problem. But it didn't change much. I tried to find the solution with no success and now I'm just scanning again my computer. I'd be thankful if anyone would be able to help me. I might have left a thing or ten things out, so feel free to ask. oh and I'm using windows xp

• File locked / read-only

  On a networked computer, I have a file which is coming up as read-only because someone else has it open. This is not true. This is a file stored locally on the computer and it is not being used by anyone else. I can login to the same computer using a different user, and the file opens up fine. I just get the issue with a particular user account. Other than deleting theses account/profile and creating it again, how can I unlock this file? Double clicking on this file gives me a message saying The file is locked for editing by another user, or the file (or the folder in which it is located,) is marked as read-only, or you specified that you wanted to open this file read-only. I don't think the folder is locked, because I can use other files in that folder fine, it's just 1 particular file which is causing this issue. I know that only 1 user is using this file as the file is on his c: and the same file works fine if he logs off to allow another user to log in.

• PCI Tv Tuner not receiving signal

  I inherited an Angel II PCI Dual TV Tuner card, popped it into my computer's PCI slot, plugged in my coax cable, but am having trouble getting any type of signal to it. The computer I am using is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, I know the card works because the computer recognizes it and installs the drivers, or at least I assume it works because of that. I'm trying to use Windows Media Center to watch/record tv. Here are a few things I have tried to get it working: Uninstalled/Reinstalled the newest drivers Tried hooking up an antenna to the coax input instead of my cable Instead of using cable splitter, went directly from wall output into card with coax cable Tried using different output on splitter in case the out port was bad I haven't tried a different coax cable yet, it should be fine since it's pretty new. Since this is my first time setting up a TV Tuner card, is there anything specific that I need to do with it? Is there any configuration that needs to be done on it? Do I need to have a digial receiver? I was getting pretty frustrated with it so I wanted to turn here to the experts, I'm sure someone can help me figure it out.

• Is there an application to log component temperatures to file?

  I purchased a computer a month or two ago (core i7, 24gb ram, geforce gtx 590, windows 7 ultimate). Within the last week it began to bluescreen regularly. I tried lots of things (check hds, check memory, reinstall windows etc..) but it still bluescreened. At the time my temps were as follows... CPU - aprox 40/50c. GPU - arpox 60 idle, aprox 90 during heavy use. HDDs - aprox 55c after the PC had been on a while. I thought the 55c was ok, but I have since realized it was probably too high and may have been the direct cause of the bluescreening. I've installed a spare fan I had in the front of the PC blowing air in, (so there's airflow from front to back) Since then, obviously, all my temps are down. Especially the HDDs - three of them reach 30c and one has been up to 47c (it is some distance away from the airflow, in one of the 5.25inch drive bays) I haven't had the PC on for as long as it would normally take to bluescreen yet, but If it does I want to know what all the temps were right before the bluescreen. I have tried Everest but it only shows me realtime temps or gives me the ability to create one-off reports. I want something that can record all the temps to a file at 30 seconds intervals. If the computer bluescreens I can load it up again and check the last entry in the file. Side question: Am I right in thinking 55c was far too hot for a HDD? (It might have got higher than that before the bluescreens.. I don't know) Another side question: Is 47c too high? This is actually why I am asking the main question - I am concerned that this one drive that isn't getting the benefit of the extra fan may still cause the computer to bluescreen.

• How do I start the Workstation Service so I can use `net use`?

  I have a Windows 7 machine that logs into a domain. The machine can net view and see the different shares, but when I try to use, net use * \\name\share, I get an error stating that the service is not started. Yet when I issue a net start, it states the service is already started. My other win7 machines work fine; they can see and use any of the shares. Is there a security setting that needs to be disabled or enabled? I really need to get this working, and I have no other ideas as the other machines have no problem accessing the shares on different systems. The error I am getting is , "The Workstation Service Has Not Been Started", but like I said other machines can connect fine, and when I issue a, "net start workstation", it states the service is already started. In addition the error number I am receiving is 2138. UPDATE: On the machine that is having issues. From the troubled machine if I issue a Net View \\name I can see all the shares on the machine I want to connect to. When I try to net use * \\name\sharename I get the error The Workstation service has not started. I have set both settings sc config lanmanworkstation start = auto and sc config lanmanserver start = auto on the Windows7 computer that is having issues. I have rebooted the computer and still no dice. I can net view any computer on the network and see all shares, but I cannot access any of the shares in which I can see. In the registry under the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services Both LanmanServer and LanmanWorkstation start is set to 2. Screen capture of net use and view: The Services: This is really weird. • How to recover deleted files on ext3 fs

  I have a drive which was using the ext3 filesystem. I am told that about 10Gb of data was deleted off the drive (probably via rm). The drive is currently mounted as read-only to preserve all data. Does anyone know of a method to restore some or all of the data? Also if it helps, the OS was Fedora. I've also been told that the data is mostly ASCII fortan source code and Matlab files. Conclusion I have finally managed to get the data back, and with the simplest means ever! After weeks of trying and failing to bring back much of any data, I brought someone in today to take a look at it and offer suggestions, he simply cd'd to the directory and everything was there! It was never lost in the first place!!! Needless to say I feel really dumb right now, but I learned quite a lot with this whole fiasco. At any rate, while I was looking through data forensics solutions, I found that the Autopsy, or more specifically the SleuthKit was the most helpful. So I will accept that as the final answer. I would also like to note for anyone that comes across this later on that the most up-voted (currently) answer by sekenre was also helpful and I learned a lot, but ultimately it did not help with the type (very many, and some being very large) of files I was dealing with. • Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. But, of course, they'll fail and when the PC is restarted, the shield icon is still there. • Curious enigma of a network cable / connection / quality

  So, the situation is like this: I'm renting an apartment in a large house and I'm sharing internet with the landlord who lives downstairs. The internet is (in my best guess) optical 20/20Mbit. I don't know how it's all wired in his flat (haven't been there / seen it). Anyway, in my flat comes a cable which seems to be connected directly to the optic to ethernet router (and the password is the default one, so I have access, he he). There was a switch connected to that and to wires that go around the flat, and the wiring is terrible. It's even mixing phone and ethernet, and from what I see some cables are even interconnected!? Anyways, this cable that comes to my flat is very short. I can barely connect my computer on it, but if I do, I seem to get decent speed / performance. Not great, but decent. If, however, I connect switch to it (tried 2 different switches and a wifi switch) it's all blinking but I can't even connect to 192.168.1.1 (the router). DHCP fails, ping is losing 80-100% of replies. So I connected this cable directly to the other cable which goes to my work room, with a connector that has two female jacks and no electronics. Now when I connect my computer in my room, again, the performance is decent. When I connect WRT54GL (with tomato, DHCP disabled) to it and I plug a cable in this WRT and to my computer... the performance is gone. Download seems okay on Speedtest, but upload is .2Mbps and it's connecting forever. So what kind cable troll am I having here? Any ideas?

  Hi we bought a nice computer to use to solve optimization problems. Intel i7-980X@3,33 GHz with 12 GB of Team Group 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM. When we use Gurobi the computer uses all 12 cores at maximum in the beginning of the solve. However after a while (about 8 hrs) it all cores jump between 65 and 85% When I solve the same models on an i7 930 all cores are at a near 100% level even after longer solution times. We first thought that the Hard disk was the bottleneck since Gurobi writes out nodefiles after the memorylimit is used. However since the new computer have 12 GB of RAM we put the memorylimit to 7 GB so the solver only used the RAM and still with the same performance in the processor. Any ideas about the bottleneck? As I said earlier it works at 100% for the first hours or so . Thanks very much for any answers! Our plan was to overclock it but we can't even get it to work at normal speed yet!

  I have OpenVPN network with 5 clients. Computer with Arch Linux which hosts OpenVPN server, It also hosts virtual machine with Computer with CentOS which is also connnected to OpenVPN subnet. Windows 8 which hosts virtual machine with CentOS. Both of them are connected to OpenVPN. Last one machine is virtual machine with CentOS which is hosted by computer with Ubuntu 14( which is not connected to OpenVPN. All machines in OpenVPN subnet are bolded. All phisical computers are in different networks. The problem is that when I use nmap to scan Windows and it's guest virtual machine it's saids that host seems down. When I force namp to scan specific port it shows filtered state: nmap -Pn -p 50010 n3 Starting Nmap 6.46 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-06-07 19:49 CEST Nmap scan report for n3 (10.8.0.3) Host is up (0.11s latency). rDNS record for 10.8.0.3: node3.com PORT STATE SERVICE 50010/tcp filtered unknown Telnet also cannot connect to this port telnet n3 50010 Trying 10.8.0.3... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host But ss on this host show's proper state of this port ss -anp | grep 50010 LISTEN 0 50 10.8.0.3:50010 *:* users:(("java",12310,271)) What might be possible reason of that and how to fix it? EDIT I've found that I am able to connect via telnet to ssh port: telnet n3 22 Trying 10.8.0.3... Connected to n3. Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.3 So it seems that it's not problem with Windows firewall. But I have no idea what it might be. • Which program is locking all my executable files?

  When updating any software product, as well as manually trying to replace .exe files, it says that access is denied to the file and in fact the System process is holding a handle to the file when I check it with Process Explorer. This must be a driver or something that is malfunctioning was my first though, but now I wonder how I figure out which driver / program is doing this and why it is so. Unlocker doesn't seem to be working for me, unless someone can tell me how to use it properly other than making it appear a magical wand in the notification area.... This is what Unlocker puts in my event log: The description for Event ID 1060 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Unlocker\UnlockerDriver5.sys the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table Upon searching event 1060 I get: <file name> has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Perhaps it is because I have 64 bit?

• How can I automatically edit an email before auto-forwarding it?

  Is there a way to automatically edit emails before forwarding them? I'm getting email notifications from Foursquare that I want to send to my phone as text messages. I know how to send messages to my number using an email address (I'm in the US and use Verizon) but I don't know how to strip out any unnecessary formatting, like HTML, before the email gets sent. What I want: Ability to strip out HTML Ability to start forwarding at a specific part of the email based on a search (e.g., I might know that Foursquare starts their messages with "Hey hey!" and only want content after that phrase occurs) Ability to truncate at 160 characters Things I've tried: I'm not using Foursquare DM pings through Twitter because I have two Twitter accounts and Twitter only allows a phone to be linked to one account at a time. I'm not willing to change which account it's linked to. I tried to work around the Twitter limitation using Google Voice, but they don't support SMS short codes. I'll compromise on the features I want if I can find a free solution that doesn't require me to set up my own server. I do think this is computer related because it will happen on my computer, not on my phone. edit My current setup: Gmail in Firefox 3.0.15 on Windows XP. I use a netbook as my only personal computer. However, if the only way to accomplish this well is to set up my own mail server or something, I would still want to know that.

• Access an external SSH server through a restrictive proxy [on hold]

  I'm a software developer. I wish to access my computer at home through SSH. For example, I sometime need to access my personal projects source code to check how I handled specific problems. Unfortunately, I currently work under an over-restrictive and anti-productive proxy that waste a hell of a lot of everyone's time (We often have to visit websites from our smartphones or use a web proxy to check very legitimates websites for answers, and don't get me started on other "security" overkill features we have to cope with...). Well, back to the subject, I can access my home computer from my phone (SSH, port 22 and 80 both redirected by router on port 22). It works, but it's quite uncomfortable.
