• Anybody have any success getting around IIS7 issues with WiX 3.5?

  WiX 3.5 still is having issues with creating websites in IIS7. I can get around most of them, but I'm getting hosed by the inability to configure the website authentication mode. Traditionally, you would just use the WebDirProperties to, for instance, turn on windows authentication: <iis:WebDirProperties Id="OMFG3.5BUGSUX" WindowsAuthentication="yes" /> Well, this doesn't work. So, now, once my nice lovely installer exits you get a big fat screw-you-unauthorized-jerk message. Not exactly professional looking. Does anybody have any suggestions/tips on working around these shortcomings in WiX?

• WCF performance improvements

  I am developing a WPF application that talks to a server via WCF services over the internet. After profiling the application I noticed a lot of time is being taking up by creating the appropriate WCF client proxy and making the call to the server. The code on the server is optimised and doesn't take any time to run yet I am still seeing a 1.5 second delay from when a service is invloked to it returning to the client. A few points to give a bit of background: I am using the ASP.Net membership for security I will eventually hook into the same server side code through a website I would eventually like to have offline support in the application I really need to nail the performance early though as if the app is taking a couple of seconds to come back it is too long for what I am trying to do. Can anyone suggest performance tips that will help me please?

• Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager can't read config sections containing encrypted passwords in applicationHost.config

  I have some sites in IIS7 that are configured to run as domain users (MYDOMAIN\someuser). I'm using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace to scan my server configuration, but it's throwing an exception when I hit one of these "impersonator" sites: using (ServerManager sm = new ServerManager()) { foreach (Site site in sm.Sites) { foreach (Application app in site.Applications.Reverse()) { foreach (VirtualDirectory vdir in app.VirtualDirectories.Reverse()) { var config = app.GetWebConfiguration(); foreach (var locationPath in config.GetLocationPaths()) { // error occurs in GetLocationPaths() } } } } } The actual error message is: COMException was unhandled Filename: \\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config Line number: 279 Error: Failed to decrypt attribute 'password' because the keyset does not exist It appears that IIS is storing the MYDOMAIN\someuser password encrypted in applicationHost.config, which is great in terms of security - but I have no idea how to get the ServerManager to decrypt this. Any tips on how I can either allow ServerManager to decrypt this, or just tell IIS to store the passwords in plain text? This is on IIS7 under Windows 7 RC, by the way.

• Iphone build error - literal-pointer symbol(s) not found

  Sorry I imagine I'm missing something basic here. Before I write up a bunch of details on the specifics of the class I'd appreciate a nudge or smack on the head about the meaning of this build error. I have a subclass of NSObject SiteAnnotation that should be conforming to the MKAnnotation protocol. • Oracle Linked Server error: ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed

  I have a linked server on SQL Server that talks to Oracle. Executing the following sql statement using Openquery SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(finance, 'select * from KFRI.VW_XREF_PROJECTS') will get error as the following: OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "finance" returned message "ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed". Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "finance". I tried to set : SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE) in {$ORACLE_HOME}\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora. It did not help. What's interesting is my coworker is able to execute the exactly same query successfully on his machine without a hitch. Any tips on how to fix this is greatly appreciated!!

• OpenXML SDK Spreadsheet starter kits

  I am trying to start working with excel documents through the OpenXML SDK Spreadsheet API. But I havent found any good guides or even examples on how to create a xlsx file from scratch. Only how to open an existing document and modify it. I have been thinking on having a empty template document and make a copy of it an then begin my proccessing on it. But it doesent feel right. It might be easier but I not comfortable using a technique I dont feel that I understand "pretty" good atleast. So my question is: Anyone has any god tips on articles or books or any other type of resource that explains the API. Thanks in advance. /johan

  Hi, I have a vb windows application with 2 forms, where form2 is called from form1 using form2.showdialog() I added a web browser control to form2, and I'm getting the following error at the point where form2 is called: Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your Main function has STAThreadAttribute marked on it. I tried: 1) adding STAThread() to the form_load() 2) I added a module to my application, and created a sub main(), with the STAThread attribute applied to it 3) I marked the sub startup() with STAThread() And none of this helped.   I want to implement a Hierarchical data bound control for ASP.NET. I used Implementing IHierarchy Support Into Your Custom Collection as a basis to create my hierarchical collection. I also created a HierarchicalDataSourceControl for the collection. Everything works: I can bind it to an ASP.NET TreeView and it renders the data correctly. However, I'm stuck on the HierarchicalDataBoundControl. I found examples, but I am still too new at c# / .Net to understand them. I don't quite understand how to implement the examples: Rendering a databound UL menu nor HierarchicalDataBoundControl Class Does anyone have any tips, or better examples of implementing a control like this?

• Connect rails application to SQL Server 2005 from Windows

  Hi guys. I (sadly) have to deploy a rails application on Windows XP which has to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Surfing in the web there are a lot of hits for connect from Linux to SQL Server, but cannot find out how to do it from Windows. Basically I followed these steps: Install dbi gem Install activerecord-sql-server-adapter gem My database.yml now looks like this: development: adapter: sqlserver mode: odbc dsn: test_dj host: HOSTNAME\SQLEXPRESS database: test_dj username: guest password: guest But I'm unable to connect it. When I run rake db:migrate I get IM002 (0) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified I'm not a Windows user, so cannot understand really well the meaning of dsn element or so. Does someone have an idea how to solve this?   Hi again :) I developed some java program to calculate cosine similarity on the basis of TF*IDF. It worked very well. But there is one problem.... :( for example: If I have following two matrix and I want to calculate cosine similarity it does not work as rows are not same in length doc 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 doc 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 5 2 4 9 if rows and colums are same in length then my program works very well but it does not if rows and columns are not in same length. For example assume a that formal releases are generated for QA once per week. At what point do you mark bugs as resolved? When the developer has committed their changes? When the changes have been reviewed and merged into the release branch? When the formal release candidate has been created? • Javascript to handle manipulating url anchor for bookmarking

  Hello, I'd like to use the anchor part of the url (after the #) so that my page can have ajax/dhtml but still be able to have bookmarks work properly. I'm wondering is someone can help me get started on writing some javascript code for this. I'm using jQuery, but if the solution's a generic one, that's fine too. For my page, I could have settings like: "a" could be a number from 10-50 "b" is a 0 or 1 "c" is a 0 or 1 etc... I'd like some tips on writing optimized javascript code which could both parse and set something like #a=23&b=0&c=1 Also, I'd like to keep my url as short as possible, so if the default of "a" was 23, in the example above, the a=23 would be omitted. Is there a library that does all this stuff already?

• Why does this jquery slideToggle code not work?

  I am trying to alter the button text for a expand/collapse button. Basically, a user clicks "Collapse" and I perform a slideToggle and when the slideToggle is done, I change the button text to "Expand" and vice-versa. The following code works great however if you click the expand/collapse button rapidly, it looses its mind and shows "Expand" when it's already expanded or "Collapse" when it's already collapsed. Any tips are appreciated. • Web-based map authoring with ArcGIS Server?

  I'm embarking on a project in which users will author, save, and share their own maps over the web. We will provide them with a large number of feature classes, but users will effectively author their own maps, map symbologies, etc. Furthermore, they will create and edit their own feature classes, which they can both map and share with other users. The model for AGS map services seems to be: author a map in ArcMap, save an MXD/MSD, publish. I'm struggling to understand how this can help us build a dynamic web mapping platform as described above. Can anyone offer some tips on how to go about it?

• Implementing Security on custom BCS/.net class?

  I'm implementing a custom BCS Model to get data from a backend system. As the backend uses it's own user management, I'm accessing it through a service account. All of this works well and allows me to pull data into SharePoint. However because it's channeled through the service account, everyone can access it, which is bad. Can anyone give me some tips which method to implement? The backend does not give me NT ACLs, but I wonder if I could just "fake" them somehow? (Essentially saying "This NT Group has Read Access" is good enough). I am aware of ISecurityTrimmer2 for Search Results, but ideally I want to cover security inside the BCS Model so that it applies to external lists as well. I want to avoid using Secure storage and mapping each individual user to the backend.

  Hi All, I need a bit of WCF help. This project uses message contracts. The transport seems to work ok. I have this code for a response type. namespace tpoke.Contracts { [MessageContract(IsWrapped = true)] public class AuthenticationResponseMC { [MessageBodyMember(Name = "authentication-token")] public Guid AuthenticationToken; } } Now when I run the operation that returns this, I try to deserialize using the XmlSerializer. The is not what I'm needing. I need it to be <authentication-token xmlns="http://tpoke.wcf.com">e13xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxx</authentication-token> How can I make this work correctly? Do I need to add the namespace to MessageBodyMember? Why is the hyphen being stripped out? Any tips or advice is certainly appreciated. Thanks, ~ck in San Diego

Being a Django n00b, I'm trying to figure out how to implement a flow like this: User signs up using django-registation with 'active' flag set to 0 After registering, send user to PayPal for a subscription When they come back from PayPal successfully, I want to set 'active' to 1 I've been looking at the django-registration documentation and don't quite understand how to use different backends or implement a flow the way I want. Any tips on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. django-paypal won't be a problem for me as I've done PayPal integration before (in PHP for a self-published book about CakePHP).

  Did anyone get that to work? I mean, unit testing .Net CF apps on Windows Mobile 6.5.3 in Visual Studio 2008. It works great for a WM 6 Pro target, but not for a WM 6.5.3 target. I get this error: The test adapter ('Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.TestTypes.Unit.UnitTestAdapter, Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.Tips.UnitTest.Adapter, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a') required to execute this test could not be loaded. Check that the test adapter is installed properly. Not enough storage is available to process this command. Yes, I can read the error text, but I don't understand the failed run. Any clues?

It blazes through what should be a 150 MB download then fails installing the very first item after about 5 seconds. I had VS 2010 Beta 1 installed but removed it beforehand. • Creating Windows Desktop Icon in CMake + CPack + NSIS

  I'm using NSIS package generator in CMake 2.8.1 to distribute a Qt application. Everything is working fine... except the use of CPACK_CREATE_DESKTOP_LINKS to create a desktop link to the application. I've looked through the CMake source (including it's own "bootstrap" installation definition for windows), and as far as I can tell I'm doing the same thing.   Hi, I am relatively new to databases,so please forgive me if my query sounds trivial. I need to send bulk email to all the contacts listed in a particular table. The body of the email is stored in a .doc file which begins as Dear Mr. _. The SQL server will read this file, append the last name of the contact in the blank space and send it to the corresponding email address for that last name. Any thoughts on how to proceed with this?   What is the best resource for serious Commodore 64 programming? Assume that serious programming on the Commodore 64 is not done in BASIC V2 that ships with the Commodore 64. I feel like most of the knowledge is tied up in old books and not available on the internet. All that I have found online are either very beginner style introductions to Commodore 64 programming (Hello world), or arcane demo-coder hacks to take advantage of strange parts of the hardware. I haven't found a well-explained list of opcodes, memory locations for system calls, and general mid-level examples and tips.   I've got a view for reports, that looks something like this: SELECT a.id, a.value1, a.value2, b.value1, /* (+50 more such columns)*/ FROM a JOIN b ON (b.id = a.b_id) JOIN c ON (c.id = b.c_id) LEFT JOIN d ON (d.id = b.d_id) LEFT JOIN e ON (e.id = d.e_id) /* (+10 more inner/left joins) */ It joins quite a few tables and returns lots of columns, but indexes are in place and performance is fine. Now I want to add another column to the result, showing comma-separated values ordered by value from table y outer joined via intersection table x if a.value3 IS NULL, else take a.value3 To comma-separate the grouped values I use Tom Kyte's stragg, could use COLLECT later. Pseudo-code for the SELECT would look like that: SELECT xx.id, COALESCE( a.value3, stragg( xx.val ) ) value3 FROM ( SELECT x.id, y.val FROM x WHERE x.a_id = a.id JOIN y ON ( y.id = x.y_id ) ORDER BY y.val ASC ) xx GROUP BY xx.id What is the best way to do it?
