• Progressing past CRUD applications in PHP?

  I've been programming in PHP for about a year and am at the following stage: Have a good 'feel' for the language Can create CRUD applications competently Can utilize an MVC structure to allow for future expansion of code Using the points listed above, I've created a number of my own applications for practise - including but not limited to; a forum, social network etc. My question may be a little vague but should hopefully be answerable. I feel as though there isn't anything else I would need to know about PHP to allow me to create websites, though I'm sure I'm wrong. What advanced/complex PHP topics could I look at that have a real-world use and will allow me to enhance both my skill as a programmer and applications in general? Recently I've looked a lot more at javascript/jQuery allowing me to give my applications a richer user interface which has been a great learning experience and proving very useful.

• Upgrade from 12.04 to 13.10: Computer won't boot

  I upgraded from 12.04 to 13.10 and my computer boots to a black screen. I hear the drumroll, but there is no functionality after that. I've downloaded a livecd of 12.04 on my other computer, and I changed the BiOS settings to boot from CD/DVD first, but it still does the same thing. I booted advanced options, edited [ro quick splash] to [ro nomodeset] and it started normally. I rebooted the system and it was back to the same junk. What do I need to do while it is operating to make it reliable with every restart? This seems to be a systemic issues with NUMEROUS Ubuntu upgrades, but I haven't read a solution yet. I need some help, please! Thanks.

• Accessing Master Page Controls

  Sometimes when using Master Pages you need to set a property on a control from the content page. An example might be changing a label’s text to reflect some content (e.g. customer name) being viewed or maybe to change the visibility of a control depending on the rights a user may have in the application. There are different ways to do this but this is the one I like. First on the code behind of the Master Page create the property that needs to be accessed. An example would be: Public Property CustomerNameText() As String     Get         Return lblCustomerName.Text     End Get     Set(ByVal value As String)         lblCustomerName.Text = value     End Set End Property Next in the aspx file of the content page add the MasterType directive like: <%@ MasterType VirtualPath="~/MasterPages/Sales.master" %> Then you can access the property in any of the functions of the code behind of the aspx content page. • How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

  I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?

• Archiving your contact form data.

  I get TONS of email from customer. Over time, this email helps me to determine what areas in our product collection are opportunities for enhancement or improvement. I store the email that comes from my blog contact form in folders and then search through them looking for trends periodically. It occurred to me that, while I need to get the emails because many of them are actionable, it would be great if I could use reporting and analysis tools against the collection. • Serverless Web Application

  In my company we work on a software that produce reports in html format. My bosses love the fact that static html pages can be moved across computer simply by moving/copying a folder and no web server is involved, so the customer only need a browser. The problem is that they asking me to implement a lot of feature which is very hard to implement properly and in a clean way without an application server. Frames cross domain problem, the impossibility to work with GET and POST data, no URLs routing...is very hard to work with this limitations. Anyone had similiar experience and wants to share their tricks/suggestion ? Do I need to tell my boss 'there is no future without a web server'? Regards.

  This is a viewpoint I've started to realize recently about some companies that I have worked for. They had their own software product that they developed in-house but most of the focus was on building an in-person sales team to push their product to businesses throughout the country. I figure that companies that are exclusively "online", meaning that their revenue source comes from online transactions where there is no "face" of the company to the customer would have a different work culture. Just curious if anyone has worked for both types of companies and notices a difference. I myself am hoping to get more into contract programming and figure that companies that don't have to employ a sales-force and things like that would be more focused on technology and maybe even willing to be flexible on partial telecommute, etc

• What are the dis-advantages of installing the ssl certificate for the naked domain?

  I might buy an SSL certificate for my sie. I know that it will help me in many ways. But will there be dis-advantages also? eg. If I load an image from another server (using plain http), will that alert the customer saying something is wrong? Will I be able to use all existing codes like phpbb, awstats etc without a problem? Will there be any issue if redirect a page from my domain.com to my subdomain.domain.com using a meta refresh or .htaccess? Will there be any issue if redirect a page from my subdomain.domain.com to my domain.com using a meta refresh or .htaccess? Any other issue that I might get into? Thanks.

  I am working on a web-based application which combines elements of what my client would call a CMS (content management system) and CRM (customer relations management) but also adds in many other business-specific features such as bookings management, staff task allocation management, wages calculations, document version control etc. However, I'm struggling to find a catch-all term for this type of application so I can research how other people have gone about creating such an integrated solution. Can anyone recommend a term I can use to refer to this, both internally in our team, for the client so they know what to call the 'system' and also for me personally, so that I can ask the Stack community further questions?

• How can I make a character move forward in a certain direction?

  I have an entity class which is updated every game tick. Let's just assume said entity moves forward constantly. What i want to know is, how can i make it so that i can give an angle to a function and it will make my entity move in that direction. let's say for example moveForward(90); Would make my character move to the right, or for example declaring my rotation as a global Integer: moveForward(rotation); rotation++; Would make my entity move around in a small circle, I assume this includes some kind of vector math, which I haven't done any studying on so a brief explanation of that if it's necessary would be nice. I would appreciate a small code snippet and an explanation I can analyze, thanks in advanced :)

• no windows 7 option after recent 12.10 install and boot repair

  Earlier today i installed ubuntu 12.10 beta. Grub wasn't booting, but just going directly to my primary OS Windows 7. I assumed i had partitioned incorrectly, because partitioning isnt my strong suit. I used boot repair because it was well recomanded off a live usb. Afterwards, grub appeared, but i only had options for Ubuntu, Advanced Ubuntu Option, and my hidden windows 7 recovery partition. Please help me recover my access to windows partiton. • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Minimal requirements (special)

  I have a PC with 512MB of RAM, an Intel Pentium 4 processor(2GHz), SiS 651 video card(32MB) and a SiS C-Media AC'97 sound controller. I know that my video card is not and will not be supported for Linux. But I wonder if my PC is able to install and start Ubuntu, not just 10.04 LTS, because I'm willing to download 12.04 LTS when it's released. Will unity work? I searched on the internet but I couldn't find a good answer. Thanks in advanced.

• After replacing all tables in an old website with divs, what other steps should I take?

I took one of the pages and replaced manually all the tables with divs, used structured data and got the website to look exactly the same.   I just learnt a crash course from an institute for Core and Advanced Core Concepts in Java. I asked them what are all the algorithms, I need to know? They said: In Java there are more methods, you don't need to code more as in C/C++. After finishing core concepts in Java, I just passed on with more method usages from pre-defined classes in packages. So what's the next part I have to do, if the above mentioned is perfectly true (or) false based on the current expectations of IT Java programmers market? FYI: I'm fundamentally from the Electronics background, so please do excuse my ignorance.

• Should I use XNA (C#) or Java to create a basic game engine?

  My project is to design and build a game engine (in just about 3 months). I've been looking at two options for this game engine, either make it with XNA (and C#) or Java. My experience with XNA/C# is zero to none, however I have been a Java programmer for around 4 years. I've had a little play around with both but I am still not sure what would be best to use (i.e. what would turn out better with my experience). XNA is obviously for making games and I would presume making a game engine would be slightly easier in this - however that said, there are numerous libraries available in Java that could be used for a game engine (such as lwjgl). What would be my best option and ideally produce the best results out of both XNA or Java? For your information, the game engine at the moment is a 2D one and is not too advanced (although I plan to extend it in the future). Thanks in advance for all answers!

• Can i create a private shop with a public gallery with magento?

  I want to do a shop with a public gallery listing all my products, with textes and images. The gallery is not a shop, you cannot buy. Behind it, i want a private section with a shop, where the same products are listed in tables with all the necessary options to buy. Each customer for the shop will have a separate account. In the shop and the gallery products are on different page according to their categories. Is magento able to do that ?
