• Ubuntu 12.04 fresh install wont boot up

  im running ubuntu 12.04 and it refuses to boot up. the screen will come on for a second, the mosue will appear, then itll go black again all inside about 3 seconds. i let it just do that for a while and eventually a window popped up saying i had a display issue. I didn't have a mouse but there was a button saying "ok" at the bottom that i couldnt click on. i hit enter, got through that screen, now im looking at another that says "What would you like to do?" - run in low-graphics mode for just one session - reconfigure graphics - troubleshoot the error - exit to console login then two buttons, cancel, and ok. I dont have a mouse and its not letting me navigate between these options with tab. firstly, if i make it through these windows will it get me into the computer so i can try and fix whats going on? also, whats going on here? also, how can i click on these buttons without the use of tab or a mouse?

  Help please! My backup method of choice is to clone my "working" drive to another identical drive. I have 2 windows drives and I clone my working one to the other one once per month. No problem - each will boot if I select it. Now with the lack of future support for XP, I am getting familiar with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I have it on one drive and I have a second identical drive that I want to be able to clone it to once/month. Not as necessary to do this with Ubuntu as with windows, I know, but I'm anal. So I have followed #47209 MestreLion's procedure with just the two Ubuntu drives "on line". I.e., boot my "working" drive with Live CD, use Gparted to be sure I know what's what, open terminal and enter and execute the dd command, Go to bed till the clone is done, shut down the computer, disconnect the input/source drive, boot up using BIOS to select the remaining output drive. The drive starts fine but all is not OK. It puts up a screen that says I'm on a Guest Session and asks for a password. Well, for one thing I have my Ubuntu set up to start without a password being entered. I have one, of course, I put it in but it isn't accepted. I can't get by this Guest Session screen. I am fine, of course. I can disconnect this drive, hook up my "main" ubuntu drive and all the rest, and go on with my business. But I don't have the desired "emergency backup" drive working where I could jump on and use it immediately if I needed it. Can someone give me some guidance here?? What (else) do I need to do.   Possible Duplicate: How Does Domain Know Where Your Web Host Is Located? I just purchased a domain name from RapidNames, and a hosting plan at JustHost. I was told to enter JustHost's name server (ns1.justhost.com) in my domain name's name server field and wait for 24 hours for the process to be complete. I do not understand how RapidNames can find my account on JustHost's server as I am sure I am not JustHost's only customer. I have read the article How DNS Works that John Conde has posted, but I still do not understand the issue. After reading several other articles, I am beginning to understand how it works, but I would still like someone to confirm if I am correct or not. From my understanding, linking your domain name to your web host is a two step process. First, you need to tell your domain name who your web host is. This is done by providing the two DNS server addresses. Secondly, you need to tell your web host which domain names you own by entering your domain names into the domain name manager. As a result, when someone queries your domain name, they will be forwarded to your web host. The web host will look in their database to match the domain name the account's owner, and then serve the appropriate website. I want to confirm if my understanding of how a domain knows where your web host is located is accurate?

• How to build a "traffic AI"?

  A project I am working on right now features a lot of "traffic" in the sense of cars moving along roads, aircraft moving aroun an apron etc. As of now the available paths are precalculated, so nodes are generated automatically for crossings which themselves are interconnected by edges. When a character/agent spawns into the world it starts at some node and finds a path to a target node by means of a simply A* algorithm. The agent follows the path and ultimately reaches its destination. No problem so far. Now I need to enable the agents to avoid collisions and to handle complex traffic situations. Since I'm new to the field of AI I looked up several papers/articles on steering behavior but found them to be too low-level. My problem consists less of the actual collision avoidance (which is rather simple in this case because the agents follow strictly defined paths) but of situations like one agent leaving a dead-end while another one wants to enter exactly the same one. Or two agents meeting at a bottleneck which only allows one agent to pass at a time but both need to pass it (according to the optimal route found before) and they need to find a way to let the other one pass first. So basically the main aspect of the problem would be predicting traffic movement to avoid dead-locks. Difficult to describe, but I guess you get what I mean. Do you have any recommendations for me on where to start looking? Any papers, sample projects or similar things that could get me started? I appreciate your help!

• I need a form to tie MySQL Records together (i.e., many-to-many relationships).

  I need a HTML-based form to tie database records together. The user scenario that I envision is somthing like this: A super-user does a search of the database and is delivered a table of records based on that search; each record is numbered with the database-record id. There would also be two text fields next to each record. These text fields would allow: the user to make a reference from one record to another. For example, a user could enter into record id #457 that there is a correlation with record ID #242. The user would also describe the type of relationship it is. This could be with a simple integer that represents the type of relationship between the two records. When the super-user hits the submit button, all of these relationships are saved in a mySqljoin table. One option is to give me advice on how to implement and code this myself in PHP. However, before I reinvent the wheel, another option is to lead me to a free script that does something similar.

• Black Screen after installing recommended Nvidia drivers. What to do?

  New to Ubuntu. Problem description: Until recently I had Windows on my computer. My hard disk is divided into two partitions. On the first one (app. 10 GB) I had my Windows XP On the second one (app. 30 GB) I have some data I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on the first partition (the smaller one). Since I wanted to keep the data on my second partition, I chose the third install option. During the installation process I deleted the data on partition one, created a new partition with the same size, formatted it as ext4 and mounted / on it. The installation continued fine and at the end I restarted and took the CD out when it ejected automatically (it could have been also before the restart). Ubuntu started but I noticed that my computer was slow. Then a prompt appeared telling me that I did not have the optimal NVidia drivers and recommended to install a specific one. I clicked on the recommended driver, installation went apparently just fine and at the end I had to restart the system again. I did it, Ubuntu started, asked for my password, I typed it, pressed Enter, the screen turned black and remained like that (only the cursor was there and I could move it). I restarted and the same thing happened again. Has anyone had such a problem before and was able to solve it? With Windows I always installed drivers from CDs after installing Windows. Are the same CDs going to work for Ubuntu too or I should find special drivers? P.S. During the installation I was connected to the internet and I agreed on installing updates and the third party software. In the time before I installed that problematic but recommended NVidia driver I checked that there was between 6 and 7 GB free space on the first partition where I installed Ubuntu.

• Cannot connect to Internet via Wifi

  I have a laptop that's currently configured as a dual-boot. The problem: I cannot connect to the Internet in the home wireless network through Ubuntu in the apartment where I currently live. The strange part: I can connect to it just fine through Windows (as right now), and I can use the Internet through Ubuntu on this computer with all the other wireless networks I have tried. The problem is only with this particular combination. The only possible explanations I can think of are either that this network is WPS, or that it's a driver problem--Vodafone router. The router 'sees' the computer--and it says it's connected; however, I keep getting prompted for a password, and I enter the key that works with Windows, but in Ubuntu it just keeps asking for it repeatedly, and I can't access the Internet. I don't have an ethernet cable at the moment, but if someone would be so kind as to ask me questions I will gladly answer, and if you have suggestions, I will do them--the only thing is, I am subletting this apartment from someone who is away on vacation, so I don't want to screw with the router settings unless I know what I'm doing! - I do not have Wicd - Yes, I have the router's information (key works in Windows) - Feedback of lshw says that the wireless card is Ultimate N Wifi Link 5300, vendor: Intel Corporation, physical id: 0 ,etc. The first two commands I was told to try work OK, but when I typed sudo ifconfig wlan0 essid ..... I got back 'essid: Unknown host' Would my question be better on the Ubuntu forums than here on AU?

• Password correct? then redirect [migrated]

  So I have this code and I need it to only redirect when the correct password is added. Only problem is that I dont know what to add that will make it only redirect if the password is "hello" I understand that using "view-source" would reveal the password, I don't mind that, its the way I want it. I basically just need to know what to add and where to add it. Sooo: Redirects if "hello" is typed into password field. • Trouble installing from disk

  I'm writing this in desperation, Windows is slowly killing me and i need to change my home pc os to Ubuntu 11.04 as soon as possible. I created a USB flash drive to install ubuntu, twice, and both times they failed to begin install on restart of my pc. i read on another forum that you might have to change some boot sequence in BIOS but when pressing F2 to enter it didnt work. After a lot of cursing, I made myself an UBUNTU install cd and booted. To my excitement, it now displayed... try ubuntu and install ubuntu. i clicked install ubuntu which lead me to the preparing to install ubuntu display, i checked download updates while installing and clicked forward. The very next display is ' allocate drive space ' i assume there are meant to be options of drives provided but mine is just a blank box and underneath all the options to create a new partition table, add, change, delete and revert are all greyed out. There is a drop down menu labelled 'device for boot loader installlation' but the only option is /dev/sda. when i click install, a no root file system error comes up telling me to please correct from the partitioning menu. I am extremely frustrated. please!! can anyone help me...

• Creating dynamic plots

  I'm completely new to web programming but I do have a programming background. I'd like to create a site that allows users to visit, enter some specifications into a form, submit the form, and then receive a graph. I have a few questions about this, only because I'm pretty ignorant: Is there a good framework I should start in? I know a lot of java, I'm okay with python, and I learned Ruby in the past. I figure I might use ruby on rails only because I hear of it so often and I think I've also heard it's easy. If anyone has some other recommendation, please suggest. The user will be entering data into a form. I'm guessing the request they'll be making should be one of a GET request, right? Because I don't intend for any of the data they're entering to modify my server (in fact, I don't intend on having a database). The data the user inputs will be used to perform calculations involving lots of matrices. I've written this functionality in python. If I use ruby on rails, should it be instead written in Ruby? Somewhere I've heard that you can either place the load of the work on your server or on the client's computer. Since the code performs heavy math, which option is preferable? How do I alter the setup to either make the client do the work or my server? Should I be using a "cgi-bin"? In the code that I have now, I use matplotlib, a python library, and then "show" the plot in order to see the graph. I specify the x and y limits, but I am able to "drag" the graph in order to see more data within the plot window. Ultimately, I want a graph to be shown on my site with the drag functionality. Is this possible? What if the client drags the graph so far, more computations must be made? Thanks!

• How do I solve "System is running in low graphics issue" in Ubuntu INSTALLER ?

  I made a bootable USB for installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Windows 8.1. I inserted my USB device and then booted into it. Then it showed me 2 options - 'Try Ubuntu' or 'Install Ubuntu'. Now I press 'Try Ubuntu' and then it says, "The system is running in low graphics mode". Then I press 'OK'. Then it showed me 4 options. Then again I click 'OK'. Then it shows a black screen and nothing happens. I have tried all possible answers provided in AU. What should I do? Please help. PS :- I am using Windows 8.1 with dedicated graphic card which is AMD Radeon HD 8670M. I am trying to do this in a Dell Laptop 3537 Inspiron. UPDATE :- I tried running the liveUSB session with nomodeset on and i was able to enter the installer. But when I run boot-repair(so that my Ubuntu gets detected in the GRUB menu) after installing Ubuntu successfully alongside Windows 8(following this tutorial with nomodeset on, I get the following error:- your system is running in legacy mode boot repair done

• Lost all non-linux hard drives

  I've somehow lost access to all my non-linux drives. I'm not sure how. I have two other hard drives set up (a windows boot and an external usb I was using under windowsxp). A few days ago I could access both under linux with no problem. Now, I see them listed under media, but when I click on them, nothing is there (same thing happens when I go there in a term window). Now, the computer (under linux) sees them, but I can't see anything in them. (in nautilus it shows "(Empty)") Any ideas what happened or how to get access to them again? My guesses as to what might have caused it: -I was trying to set up AdobeAIR (unsuccessfully) and had to make and remove a couple of symbolic links. Never got that to work but maybe links I made or removed did something? -I was also trying to set up nautilus so that I could enter it with sudo permission. I also didn't figure out how to do that successfully, but maybe something I did while trying messed it up? (I think I installed and uninstalled nautilus-actions configuration tool). Note: I'm working on a relatively new install of 12.04

• SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB &ndash; How to get started

  As many of you aware, SQL Server can be a bit of a pig when it comes to system resources on your development machine. As part of the 2012 products Microsoft has added SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB which is a happy medium for myself when thinking about having to install a full blown SQL Server on my box. This however does not work in all cases for all development but if you are doing web or local client development then it should suffice. On the other hand, if you are working with technologies like SharePoint or trying to run Team Foundation Server on your local box then you will be out of luck while using LocalDB. To start of with, the localDB setup is delivered and packaged with Visual Studio 2012 RC. If you want to get the stand-alone installer you can download it here in either the 32 or 64 bit flavors. Once you get it installed you can start using it right away in either Visual Studio 2010 or the new Visual Studio 2012 RC. To get started you can open the SQL Server object explorer in Visual Studio by clicking   the menu option View –> SQL Server Object Explorer. This will bring up to the navigation pane where you can add a SQL Server. Once you add the SQL Server you will be prompted with the “Connect to Server” dialog to enter the server for which you can use “(localdb)\v11.0”. Click connect and you should be connected to your localDB where you can create and manage databases from Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012 or SSMS. Once you have started creating databases here you can use the database projects in Visual Studio with these database as well as use the (localdb)\v11.0 server name inside your connections string information for your development environment. Hope this helps someone get started with SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB! It provides a great balance for developing against SQL Server 2012.

• How do I get my internal HDD to mount at startup?

  It's either not intuitive or not working in Ubuntu 14.04. I want to mount my internal HDD at at startup (I boot from an SSD). I attempt to set this, following this procedure: Open Disks utility Select the disk Below the disk's Volumes, click on the More actions button Select Edit Mount Options... Select Automatic Mount Options "Off" Under Mount Options, ensure that Mount at startup is selected Click OK Enter password into Authenticate dialog box Restart but this procedure doesn't work. Upon rebooting, and after Grub attempts to start Ubuntu, I receive the error message "An error occurred while mounting /mnt/4f721fc0-8072-453f-b48f-ca686bd89549. Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". That identifier "4f721fc0-8072-453f-b48f-ca686bd89549" was automatically assigned by Ubuntu. I press S and the boot process continues OK. If I try to mount the disk immediately after booting, I receive the error message "Unable to access "Storage"" (I named the volume Storage). So then I start the Disks utility and set it to Automatic Mount Options "On" and reboot. To me, it seems like this should work, but it doesn't. • How can I guarantee a solvable Fifteen Puzzle shuffle?

  I am making a 15 Puzzle game in C# that allows the user to enter a custom row and column value up to a maximum of a 10 x 10 puzzle. I am having problems with the shuffle method. I want to make it so the puzzle is always solvable by first creating a winning puzzle then shuffling the empty space. The problem is it is too inefficient to call every click event each time. I need a way to invoke the click event of a button adjacent to the empty space but not diagonal. I also use an invisible static button for the empty spot. The PuzzlePiece class inherits from Button. I am not too sure how to do this. • Upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 now no network access

  A few weeks ago I decided I should enter the Linux world and read that Ubuntu is the most widely used release. I installed version 11.10 and it worked perfectly. Just this past week I decided I would do the upgrade to 12.04. The upgrade process itself worked fine. However, when I logged in I no longer had a network connection. I am running an AMD-based PC with a D-LINK DFE-530TXS network card and as I said, it worked fine in 11.10. I have scoured the Internet and come across a thousand slightly varying solutions, but they are too convoluted for someone new to Linux. Not because I can't follow the steps, but because most of the tools/utilities that are referenced (e.g. to compile, install, etc.) are not available when I use the stated steps in the solutions. So....should I re-install 11.10 or is there hope in getting this version to use the NIC that I know works. I have the latest driver from d-link for my NIC but I have no idea how to 'install' it for Ubuntu 12.04 to use. I know you will require additional information, but I wasn't sure what you would need. • How would you manage development between many Staging branches?

  We have a Staging Branch. then we came out with a Beta branch for users to move whenever they wanted to from old Production branch to the new features. Our plan seemed simple, we test on Staging, when items get QA'd, they get cherry-picked and deploy to Beta. Here's the problem! A bug will discreetly make its way on to Beta, and since Beta is a production environment, it needs fixes fast and accurate. But not all the QA's got done. Enter Git hell.. So I find a problem on Beta. No sweat, its already been fixed on Staging, but when I go to cherry-pick the item over, Beta barely has any of the other pre-requisites of code to implement this small change. Now Beta has a little here and a little there, and I can't imagine it as a code base being as stable as Staging. What's more, is I'm dealing with some insane Git conflicts, and having to monkey patch a bunch of things to make up for what Beta hasn't caught up with Staging. Can someone polite or non-polite terms, tell me what we're doing wrong here as far as assembling this project? Any awesome recommendations or workarounds or alternatives to the system we came up with?

• jquery is not working over local network [migrated]

• Can't connect to Wireless

  Good day all! I hope you are doing good. I have performed a WUBI installation of 12.04 on my HP G62 laptop, which has an Atheros AR9285 wireless chipset. Everything works fine with my wired network connection. However, wireless is unable to connect to my wifi network. I enter the WPA2 key and then it attemps to connect, but eventually comes back, asking for the WPA2 key again, as if it was not good. All of the other laptops in the household are able to connect, using the same key (I configured them all, so I am 500% sure of the WPA2 key). Any idea as to what could be causing this? I can definitely post the output of CLI commands like "rfkill list" or "sudo lshw -class network", or "ifconfig". I have installed Ubuntu a few time but I am definitely still a newbie, but I am definitely computer savyy. Looking forward to suggestions . Thanks in advance !!! Dan...

• Understanding Node.js and concept of non-blocking I/O

  Recently I became interested in using Node.js to tackle some of the parts of my web-application. I love the part that its full JavaScript and its very light weight so no use anymore to call an JavaScript-PHP call but a lighter JavaScript-JavaScript call. I however do not understand all the concepts explained. Basic concepts Now in the presentation for Node.js Ryan Dahl talks about non-blocking IO and why this is the way we need to create our programs. I can understand the theoretical concept. You just don't wait for a response, you go ahead and do other things. You make a callback for the response, and when the response arrives millions of clock-cycles later, you can fire that. If you have not already I recommend to watch this presentation. It is very easy to follow and pretty detailed. There are some nice concepts explained on how to write your code in a good manner. There are also some examples given and I am going to work with the basic example given. Examples The way we do thing now: puts("Enter your name: "); var name = gets(); puts("Name: " + name); Now the problem with this is that the code is halted at line 1. It blocks your code. The way we need to do things according to node puts("Enter your name: "); gets(function (name) { puts("Name: " + name); }); Now with this your program does not halt, because the input is a function within the output. So the programs continues to work without halting. Questions Now the basic question I have is how does this work in real-life situations. I am talking here for the use in web-applications. The application I am writing does I/O, bit is still does it in am blocking matter. I think that most of the time, if not all, you need to block, because you have to wait on what the response is you have to work with. When you need to get some information from the database, most of the time this data needs to be verified before you can further with the code. Example 1 If you take a login for example. You have to wait for the database to response to return, because you can not do anything else. I can't see a way around this without blocking. Example 2 Going back to the basic example. The use just request something from a database which does not need any verification. You still have to block because you don't have anything to do more. I can not come up with a single example where you want to do other things while you wait for the response to return. Possible answers I have read that this frees up recourses. When you program like this it takes less CPU or memory usage. So this non-blocking IO is ONLY meant to free up recourses and does not have any other practical use. Not that this is not a huge plus, freeing up recourses is always good. Yet I fail to see this as a good solution. because in both of the above examples, the program has to wait for the response of the user. Whether this is inside a function, or just inline, in my opinion there is a program that wait for input. Resources I looked at I have looked at some recourses before I posted this question. They talk a lot about the theoretical concept, which is quite clear. Yet i fail to see some real-life examples where this is makes a huge difference.
