• Shared FC LVM VG with LVs for each KVM VM. Clvm required?

  I have 2 virtual machine hosts running Ubuntu 12.04 and KVM managed with libvirt. They are both connected to the same VG which is a LUN on my SAN over FC. I provision LVs on this shared VG for each VM. I don't think I need HA or failover, but I do want live migration between the hosts. Do I need clvm in this case? As long as I don't try to start the same VM on each host should this work? Clvm requires lots of overhead with clustering tools that I don't think I need. I can deal with manually restarting VMs on other hosts in the event of a hardware failure.

• Lossless cutting of MPEG TS files in Windows

  I have several HD video files in transport stream (.ts) format, recorded with my satellite receiver. I want to cut them, as in simply remove a few minutes from the beginning, the end and sometimes a few minutes in the middle of it (remove early start of recordings, late ends and, for some seldom files, the ads). What is a good, ideally but not necessarily free, software with a GUI to do this? Best would be something where you could select points on a timeline and simply cut the elements out. As a resulting file, just the same .ts format would be great, but I could also live with putting the video contents into another container, as long as the video is NOT re-encoded / transcoded. The files have additional audio streams and subtitles. These should be retained in the process. My OS is Windows.

• opening offline sync files from a .CAB file

  OK, I have downloaded from Windows Live Spaces (don't know if this is useful, but might be) a .CAB file containing an Index.XML file and package.cab, package01.cab through to package12.cab. The index.XML simply has names of all the subsequent package.cab files and their offsets. The first package.cab has a single 26MB XML file which appears to be an OfflineSyncFile definition which I am guessing is the meta data for all the other packageXX.cab files. Now the question I have is how should i be going about extracting these things and piecing it all back together again. I have tried WinRAR, which extracts all 800MB for me into unnamed files and randomly named directories. I have also tried the standard extract in Windows Explorer with much the same resusts.

  This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

• Error while setting up Anywhere Access on Windows Server 2012 Essential (personalized domain name from Microsoft)

  I am trying to setup Anywhere Access on a Windows Server 2012 Essential Release Candidate, but keep getting this error: "The domain name was not setup for your server. Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again. An unknown error occurred. Please wait a few minutes and then try again". These are the options that I selected in the Wizard: I want to set up a new domain name Get a personalized domain name from Microsoft Entered my Windows live id and password xxxx.remotewebaccess.com And on the next page the error is displayed. I have setup my router (Linksys WRT160N) to forward all TCP traffic to the Server. UPnP is also enabled. If I hit my public (dynamic) IP (http://188.182.194.182/) I get the Windows Server 2012 homepage. Any ideas?

• FTP Synchronization software for Mac or PC

  Hi, I've been using FTP Synchronizer for awhile and generally have had pretty good results with it. But, I've just moved to a Mac full-time (at work as well as home now) so want to get a native client if I can. I've tried the only one that I've found - SuperFlexibleSynchronizer - but it crashed every time I loaded up an FTP to FTP synch attempt. The most important features to me are: 1) ability to synch with a large number of files (thousands), as I generally work on sites with large number of files. 2) FTP to FTP synch. This would be very helpful as I work with some CMS based sites for which users upload files while on staging and don't want to move files locally first before moving live. Thanks! Evan

• WLAN LED randomly blinking when there is no traffic

  Hi, I've got a Linksys WUSB54GC WLAN USB interface (Ralink chipset) and I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 6.0. The LED very often randomly blinks although there is no traffic in the network. I checked this with Wireshark. Sometimes, but rarely, the LED stops blinking. The issue is present in Ubuntu and Fedora too. It was not present in Debian Lenny with Linux 2.6.28. I checked an old live cd with ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27 and it was also OK. So I guess that's an issue with Linux kernel and its wireless driver or firmware. Has anybody observed a similar thing? Does anybody know how to help this annoying blinking? Thanks.

• How do I diagnose a HP Notebook which has hardware issues?

  My HP DV6t-2300 recently crashed while using FLV Player. It wouldn't start up after this so I had to do a hardware reset (remove power sources, hold down power button ~15 seconds, put back power sources). After this it would turn on, but start up would freeze in Ubuntu, Windows 7, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, and various Linux Live CDs. The only successful way to boot was in Windows 7 Safe Mode. The HP Customer Service was very polite, but they are trying to blame it on a corrupt operating system which is clearly not the case (since I have tried 4 operating systems and none work). I am thinking it might be the GPU since 1) I was watching movies when it crashed and 2) Windows Safe Mode might not use the dedicated GPU. I already ran Memory and HDD tests and there were no detected errors. Any ideas of what's wrong, or suggestions for tests that I should run in safe mode? Should I try reinstalling Windows 7 to convince HP that it's not the OS?

• Are there videocamera which geotag individual frames?

  I'm looking for a way to record live video with the specific requirement of having each frame georeferenced with GPS. Right now I'm using a normal video camera with a PDA+GPS that records the position, but it's difficult to sync both of these plus sometimes I've forgotten to turn the PDA+GPS or it has failed for some reason and all my video has been useless. Using google I found that about two years ago a company named Seero produced such video cameras and software, but apparently the domain doesn't exist any more and I only find references of other pages mentioning it. Does somebody know of any other product? I need to record this video in HD and have some way to export to Google Maps or other GIS software the positions of the frames in a way that I can click on the map and see what was being recorded in the video at that point. The precission of the GPS tracking is good enough as one position per second, intermediate frames of the video stream can be interpolated.

So i would like to have him to either view my screen (taking control might be fine) or show me his screen so he can talk about a specific piece of code. What software is good for this? We both think about security so an MS product (netmeeting? if that still exist on normal msn live installs) or an open source would be preferred. Should be free.

• SVN Server not responding

  I've been bashing my head against a wall with this one all day and I would greatly appreciate a few more eyes on the problem at hand. We have an in-house SVN Server that contains all live and development code for our website. Our live server can connect to this and get updates from the repository. This was all working fine until we migrated the SVN Server from a physical machine to a vSphere VM. Now, for some reason that continues to fathom me, we can no longer connect to the SVN Server. The SVN Server runs CentOS 6.2, Apache and SVN 1.7.2. SELinux is well and trully disabled and the problem remains when iptables is stopped. Our production server does run an older version of CentOS and SVN but the same system worked previously so I don't think that this is the issue. Of note, if I have iptables enabled, using service iptables status, I can see a single packet coming in and being accepted but the production server simply hangs on any svn command. If I give up waiting and do a CTRL-C to break the process I get a "could not connect to server". To me it appears to be something to do with the SVN Server rejecting external connections but I have no idea how this would happen. Any thoughts on what I can try from here? Our IPCop (?) firewall allows connections from it (and it alone) on port 80 and passes the connection to the SVN Server. • Finding the file that is on a bad block on a HFS+ volume (debugfs for HFS+)

  I have a drive in our iMac that has bad blocks, as booting from an Ubuntu 11.10 live CD and using ddrescue -f /dev/sda /dev/null finds them. I'd like to get the drive to remap them by writing to the blocks, say using hdparm --write-sector, but I don't want to do this without knowing what's in those blocks and finding the file that owns them, so I can restore the file from another source. I found fileXray but don't feel like spending $79 to map a block to a file and hfsdebug has been taken offline. Are there suggestions on a tool or technique to use? I looked at all the Ubuntu HFS+ packages to see if they could provide this info but nothing jumped out at me. BTW, I used Disk Utility to erase the empty space, but it didn't get any of the bad blocks to be remapped, according to smartctl -A.

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Pro (Late 2009) as the only operating system, so theres's no Mac OS X oder Bootcamp installed. It runs fine and now i'd like to create an image of the current installation. Unfortunately my Acronis True Image cd doesn't boot on this device and my attempts to create an image with partimage or dd from a bootable ubuntu live cd to a external hd failed ("can't read from block 0"). Are there any others out there with such an installation and if yes: how did you succeed in imaging your partition/device?

• How do you create a bootable partition on a USB drive?

  I have a bootable ISO designed to be burned to a double-layer DVD. I don't have a double layer DVD burner, so I would like to stick the ISO image on a 50 GB partition on a USB hard drive I have. How do I get the boot info onto the hard drive? If it helps, it's an OSx86 Live CD.   I'm a Blackberry fan and I have been aching to get a phone with a better UI (and not the jesusPhone). I was looking at the Android platform and find it quite fun to play with. However, one of the crucial elements of my BB that I love to death is the global inbox of all my email accounts. (not to mention the BB messenger, but I can live without that). Is there an addon or does the android have this feature natively? I played with my friend's Verizon Droid, and she couldn't tell me. Thanks!

• Simple NNTP client for Ubuntu

  I need to download a particular NNTP group. I do not need to setup any crons, put group contents in /opt and other stuff. Just run <fetch-nntp> <server> <group-name> <output-dir> and be done with it without putting a lot of garbage in the system. If that <fetch-nntp> would not fetch the same messages on the second run — fine. But I can live without it. All NNTP clients that I've looked at are trying to be a NNTP server as well. Is there something simpler that is suitable for my needs?

• Can I connect an external antenna to a range extender?

  I live in a kind of dormitory and the next access point is 60 meters away from my room. So I bought a range extender (TP-Link WA730RE) and installed it into my room in the same height as the access point. But my problem is still not solved. The reception is slightly better but my connection still gets broken every two minutes. The antenna that comes with this range extender was 4dB. My question is, can I buy an 8dB external antenna (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-ANT2408C-Desktop-Omni-Directional-Antenna/dp/B0034CQSKW/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1332074993&sr=8-14) and replace it with the antenna that comes with the range extender? Or is this external antenna only suitable for the "receiver" end of the connection, i.e. the computer?

• Trigger ZFS dedup one-off scan/rededup

  I have a ZFS filesystems which has been running for some time and I recently had the opportunity to upgrade it (finally!) to the latest ZSF version. Our data doesn't scream dedup but I firmly believe based on small tests that we could gain anywhere from 5-10% of our space back for free by utilizing it. I have enabled dedup on the filesystem and new files are slowly being dedupified but the majority (95%+) of our data already exists on the filesystem. Short of moving the data off-pool and then recopying it back, is there any way to trigger a dedup scan of existing data? It doesn't have to be asynchronous or live. (And FYI there isn't enough room on the pool to copy the entire filesystem to another and then just switch the mounts.)

  Currently I am watching the live auth.log and someone is continuously trying the brute force attack for 10 hours. Its my local server so no need to worry but I want to test. I have installed denyhosts. There is already an entry for that IP address in hosts.deny. But still he is trying the attacks from same IP. System is not blocking that. Firstly I don't know how did that IP address get entered in that file. I didn't enter it, is there any other system script which can do that. hosts.deny is sshd: 120.195.108.22 sshd: 95.130.12.64 hosts.allow ALL:ALL sshd: ALL Is there any iptable setting that can override the host.deny file

• How do I convert an animated GIF to a YouTube friendly video format?

  My son has made some animations with Pivot Stickfigure Animator which we'd like to upload to YouTube. The problem is Pivot saves as animated GIFs which I can't upload to YouTube. The Wikipedia article recommends using Windows Movie Maker to convert GIF to WMV, but unfortunately I'm using Windows 7 for which you can get the new Windows Live Movie Maker which doesn't seem to support GIFs. I Googled and found an article which said to use Beneton Movie GIF to convert animated GIF to AVI, but this seemed to rely on a 3rd Party application which wasn't installed and so failed. Installing the missing application - pjBmp2Avi - by hand and adding it to the path still didn't allow Beneton to do the conversion. I hoped FFmpeg might do the trick but this only outputs to animated GIFs, it won't read from then. Further Googling found lots of applications with 30 day trials and so on but I was hoping for something free. So any suggestions on how I can convert an animated GIF to a movie file on Windows using free (as in beer) software?

  Background: Server OS is Windows Server 2012. GUI is installed as we come upto speed with powershell. Setup is staging, not production (yet). We have our (internal, domain limited) Root CA installed. I would like to take the Root CA offline to secure storage but before that I'd like to setup an intermediate CA which can take over actual live, online (int-RA-net) functionality Can someone guide me covering: creating the intermediate CA certificate request installing the intermediate CA certificate on domain controller (certification authority role already installed with Root CA online right now) use the intermediate CA to generate a certificate (any use certificate, just for demonstration purposes) Obviously this certification chain would be invalid on computers outside our domain (self trusted root - our root certificate is NOT from common 3rd parties). This last point is NOT a problem.

• Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

• Logging with Resource Monitor?

  I am having sudden spikes in disk read activity, which can tie up my system for a few seconds at a time. I would like to figure out the cause of this before I set my machine to go live. With Performance Monitor I know I can log activity, but this does not show me individual processes that cause a spike. Resource Monitor allows me to see processes, but I have no way to keep logs. It seems unless I have Resource Monitor open at the time of a spike, I will not be able to identify the process causing the spike. Can someone suggest a way to log with Resource Monitor, or an alternative tool that can?

  Hi, We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration fo the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage?   Looking to replace/port my home number which I use for mainly faxing for my home business to a PBX server ( Thinking Asterisk or Elastix ). My question is: Does Asterisk/Elastix support Faxing ( Incoming / Outgoing ) Does Asterisk/Elastix support Google Voice Here is what I'm looking to do: Run some sort of PBX software from my own home server that will allow me to use Google Voice for my home number, possibly allow multiple Google voice ( Though I could live with just the one ) and must support Faxing ( Incoming and Outgoing ). Would Asterisk/Elastix support all of this or would you recommend something else for this? Looking to avoid some of the pitfalls that could happen I like Ubuntu if a Linux environment is needed
