    In this question the OP implies that he wants to base the blog system he is developing on automatic creation of .aspx files, one for each new blog entry. In my answer to his question (which is related to something else), I told him that I would discourage him from using such an approach, but without giving any real reasons. He is now wanting reasons why it is not a good idea, and I'm using this question to see if the community can come up with a compelling enough list of reasons for him to use another approach, such as one using a dbms, code-reuse, url-rewriting, MVC, and what not.

  • jQuery width() returns 0 for a span element created on the fly?

    Hi, I'm trying to determine the width of a string. I'm using the following code but it always return 0. It seems to be that as the span element is created and not already present in the page body, jQuery width() returns 0. Is there a way such that I can get the width of the text without resorting to creating dummy html code in the page? Does anybody know a JavaScript Widget of some sort that can do syntax highlighting for HTML within a Textarea or similar, while still staying a plain text editor (no WYSIWYG or advanced functions)?

    Hello everyone: I am trying to analyze my agent results from a collection of 20 txt files here. If you wonder about the background info, please go see my page, what I am doing here is just one step. Basically I would like to take only my agent's result out of the messy context, so I've got this command for a single file: cat run15.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' This means : after the regex match, continue forward by 50 lines, stop, then match a line separator starts with "==", go back by 50 lines, if possible (This would certainly clash the very first line). This approach depends on the fact that the hard-coded line number counter 50, would be just fine to get exactly one line separator. And this would not work if I do the following code: cat run*.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' The output would be a mess... My question is: how to make sure grep knows exactly when to stop going forward, and when to stop getting backward? Any suggestion or hint is much appreciated.

This is going to need to be re-evaluated about a thousand times and I'd rather not have to traverse the whole thing every time.   • Is Cancan's accessible_by my best choice for altering admin scope on the fly?

    Situation: On my site, I have a comment model, with a deleted field. Users cannot see deleted comments, but I would like to allow admins to see deleted comments, if they choose to. This will be accomplished by having a scope for users with the admin role which allows them to view comments with the deleted field set to false, as well as true. Question: Is Cancan's accessible_by method my best choice for doing so? From what I've read, it sounds like it will facilitate exactly what I'm trying to do, but, I don't want to implement something that is inefficient, if there is a better method.

  • Does C++11 offer a better way to concatenate strings on the fly?

    I've seen this answer, and I wonder (I hope) if C++11 has come up with a native better method to concatenate, and possibly format, strings. With "better" I mean actually really one-line, like in pretty much all higher level languages (bonus points if it supports something like python's "formatted string"%(tuple) syntax but I guess that's really hoping for too much). The ideal result should be something like: my_func("bla bla bla" << int(my_int) << "bla bla bla"); The only barely acceptable methods listed in that answer are the fastformat ones, but I wonder if C++11 managed to do better.

    Hi, I am working with a fileReference, however I'm having issues running on Safari on a MAC... Event.COMPLETE is fired when the file data is available to flash. If I select an 500meg file, it takes a few seconds before Event.COMPLETE is fired. If I attempt to access the file data properties (such as reading the data stream) before Event.COMPLETE is fired, I receive null reference errors... So far so good. However, on a MAC (speficially Safari, not tested other browsers), the Event.COMPLETE is not fired. I have checked the Adobe docs, which say Event.COMPLETE is fired when the upload is completed. So why does it get fired on windows when the fileReference has parsed the file, but the upload method has not yet been called... Can anyone help?     I'm trying to put together a game for Mac OS X which involves a lot of fast action and flinging around of the mouse cursor. If the user wants to play in windowed mode, I'd quite like to lock the cursor to the inside of the window to avoid accidentally changing programs in the heat of battle (obviously this will cancel itself if the user changes programs or hits escape for the pause menu.) On Windows, this can be accomplished easily with ClipCursor(). I can't find an equivalent on Mac OS X. Is there one?

    So I'm writing a Django based website that allows users select a color scheme through an administration interface. I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

Modifying requested pages, by adding messages like Warning: this access point is going down soon" or Network quota exhausted or You are overusing the network connection and may be banned or Security notice: this is unencrypted network, so everybody around can see this page too It seems the only good solution (as there is no general "Send notice to users of my access point" thing). All traffic is already routed through -j REDIRECT, socat and remote SOCSK5 server, so intercepting unencrypted content should be easy. How it's better to add a message? Just inserting <div style="color:white; background-color:red">Sorry, connect_me access point is going down soon...</div> as the first element of <body> breaks design of some pages (f.e. Wikipedia).   • select list modified on-the-fly doesn't fire onChange() for new first element.

    In the code below, I'm using jquery 1.4.1 to modify the options in a select list when the user clicks on the list (replacing the single Old item with three New items). Selecting either New 2 or New 3 correctly fires the change() method (and show the alert), but selecting "New 1" does not. What am I missing?     1) Uploadimage action gets requests from form posts. <form action="/content/uploadimage" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"> It reads HttpPostedFileBase stream data and sends it to the response. I need to show the image in a div container instead of sending it to the response as a file so that users can manipulate the image using jcrop. Image source is generated at runtime. I can't pass an action name to the src attribute. Is this possible using MVC and without using control viewstate? 2) I don't want to use flash or silverlight. Is there an easy ajax alternative to the method I use to get files from user?

    From older times (Mac OS 10.4) I had found this command line on the web somewhere: mdfind '(kMDItemFSContentChangeDate >= $time.now(-60)) && (kMDItemFSContentChangeDate <= $time.now)' it gave me a list of files that where changed in the last minute. This does not work anymore on Mac OS 10.6. Can anybody explain why this doesn't work? And even suggest a working command line?

  • How do I fix libdispatch problem crashing Mac OS X apps?

    In the last day I have started having a lot of brokenness on my Mac (MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with all software updates). Most noticably, iTunes no longer syncs with my iPhone. It fails with a crash dialog reporting "AppleMobileDeviceHelper quit unexpectedly" and an error dialog "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from SyncServices. Reconnect or try again later." I've attempted the fix at support.apple.com/kb/HT1747 but it failed. I've also been having problems (at first seemingly unrelated) with the horrible Cisco VPN client, which started giving me this error: Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem I followed the steps at www.anders.com/cms/192/CiscoVPN/Error.51:.Unable.to.communicate.with.the.VPN.subsystem which don't seem to work for me, although I can connect if I use the command line with sudo : sudo vpnclient connect MyProfile I had a look in the Console app at the diagnostic messages and I noticed a pattern, that a number of apps were reporting "BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBDISPATCH". The affected programs are: AppleMobileBackup AppleMobileDeviceHelper Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher cvpnd (the Cisco VPN daemon) Of these, only the last is non-Apple software! The common text in the diagnostic messages is: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 1 Dispatch queue: com.apple.libdispatch-manager Application Specific Information: BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBDISPATCH: Do not close random Unix descriptors I'm beginning to wonder if there's a permissions problem, or corruption of an important library, ... I should note that I've rebooted several times and verified the disk permissions and the disk. Any help would be great!

  • Strange corruption saving from Textpad 5 within Windows 7-64 VirtualBox VM to shared folder with Mac host

    I have a fairly new Window-7 64bit install running in Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro. I'm using TextPad 5 within that environment to edit source files that live on a shared folder that is on the Mac Host. When I save some of these source files, the saved file ends up with some amount of the end of the file repeated one or more times. For example, a file that has this at the end: ... return ttp; }; would, once saved, open up with: ... return ttp; }; }; It is definitely a problem with how the file gets written as opposed to how it's read, because I can see this now matter what app I use to open the file with (NotePad & Word in Windows 7, TextWrangler back in the Mac). I've tried saving as ANSI and UTF-8, and with or without the 'Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM' checked in TextPad preferences. It doesn't happen with all files though I can't see any pattern about which files do or don't have the problem. It doesn't happen with files written to the Windows 7 c:\ drive. And so far it doesn't happen from other applications saving files, only TextPad. Any ideas? My versions: Textpad 5.4.2 Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, fully up to date VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778 OSX 10.6.7

  • Looking for software to create a personal hotspot on Mac OS X (not using the built-in ability)

    I got my nifty little MacBook Air today. Since I will be going on travel I was hoping to use my iPad 3G as screen extension with Air Display. It works being in a shared WiFi network. Sadly Apple is a bit restrictive on the tethering with their mobile devices such as the iPad. Now I read iOS 4.3 will enable the iPad to use tethered networks. But the feature will not be working for iPad 3G. I assume their big partner telecom companies fear everyone will quit their internet contract with them. So I want to create a personal hotspot on my MacBook and use it on my iPad. But the iPad is not able to use this network. The network is visible but not usable. On Windows there is this connectify program which lets the PC act as wireless router. Does anybody know a similar program for Mac which would turn it into a wireless router? Or is there something I don't see with Mac OS X's builtin features?
