  Hypothetical here, but I want to understand. Say I have a hand me down machine, 4 PCI slots, 64-bit 33 MHz PCI. How much data can that PCI bus handle? System bus is 133 MHz. I want to use one slot for a SATA II card, and the rest for Gig-E cards, building out as fast a NAS as I can. I think one slot may be AGP2x, so that leaves me 2 for Gig-E and one for SATAT II. Will I saturate, what is the max bandwidth of the PCI bus?

• Is it possible to download minimal drivers on Windows, without the extra software packages?

  The situation in all its glory: 30 megs for ATIs' "Display Driver Only". Almost 100 megs for NVidias' GeForce/Ion bloatware. 300 megs for an HP printer driver with immense amount of crap 30 megs for a Realtek integrated sound card driver. 50 megs for a mouse driver ...and dozens and dozens of other similar examples Additinally, UI/UX on vendors' sites is really terrible: I have to carefully pick and choose the exact model of my whatever, although this packages do contain drivers for pretty much every possible hardware model out there. My question is: How and where can I download true minimal drivers without all these ATI "Installation Managers", Realtek GUIs, ASUS tools, etc.?

• Apache2 Doesn't Serve Subdomain Alias

  I'm trying to prefix an existing Rails application with a sub-domain, essentially I want the sub-domain to serve the same application. Right now apache2 serves my application with "www.example.com" or "example.com". I adjusted my sites-available virtualhost in hopes of allowing for "foo.example.com" or "www.foo.example.com" however both instances are met with a domain not found error. Here is my current VirtualHost in /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias foo.example.com *.example.com www.foo.example.com www.example.com DocumentRoot /home/user/my_app/public <Directory /home/user/my_app/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> </VirtualHost> Any ideas? Note, I realized I probably don't need a wild card sub-domain for what I'm trying to do, I simply added that in as a last-ditch effort. • Idle hard disk makes noise.

  Like a fan or something. I checked it. I stopped all fans (cpu, video, psu) and the noise was still there. I read online that it might be a motor or something. I have put a great deal of effort making my pc quiet. Installed a quiet psu and cpu fan, reduced the fan speed of my video card, bought a ssd... But my drive for data makes this noise. I would never have expected that. Do all hard disks make this kind of noise? I guess most people won't notice it because of the other fans they have in the system, I however can hear it quite clearly because all my other fans are almost silent. So should i get a new one or should i just live with it, considering that i might end up with a drive that also makes this noise.

• WEP key not working on laptop running Ubuntu

  I can't connect to my router via wifi from my laptop (running Ubuntu) even if I'm 100% sure the WEP key I punch in is correct. It works via LAN though. I'm also not able to ping localhost 127.0.0.1. I had some problems setting up the radio on my network card but I think that that works since it finds some wireless networks. (Although it's much much faster than Windows it's useless since I can't download any libraries for development.) What could be wrong with my setup?

• Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

• Understanding GPU clock rates

  I know how to overclock my CPU (mess with multiplier, and bus speed)... However, I've noticed that it seems a bit more complicated with GPU's. How and where do I start? I've noticed that I can adjust the GPU clock speed in my BIOS. Card I'm overclocking: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gt_240_us.html I found that memory bus speed is (Mem Speed * Bus width) / 8. So obviously a good way to overclock the memory bandwidth is to adjust the memory speed. Now, GPU speed is 550 Mhz. How do I find its speed as well? Do I multiply it by the bus width (128)? What is ideal GPU speed relative to memory bandwidth?

  I am looking for a solution to send SMS/MMS message to mobile device from desktop or browser in LAN environment. As such, it is most probably using TCP/IP protocol to transmit request/response. The server may attach to a GSM device with SIM card attached. An server application would then start accept the request from any LAN client and convey the SMS/MMS to one or more recipients. The server may log all requests for further traffic analysis in later stage. Is there any solution that able to perform what I describe here. Please advice.

• Hooking up a laptop to an HDTV via VGA

  I have a 2-3 year old laptop running XBMC, and I have an HDTV that I'd like to connect it to. The only output that the laptop has is VGA (and S-Video - I don't know if the TV supports it) . The TV doesn't support VGA input, but takes HDMI. -- Is it worth buying a VGA-to-HDMI converter? As in this: -- Are there any other, cheaper options available? There's a lot of information around the WWW, but a lot of it's outdated and it's hard to digest everything. I know of at least one other option, and that's a USB to HDMI connection, but I don't even know what to look for or where to get started on that one. I also suspect it might be a little more complicated. If it's cheaper then it could be worth it.   I have one NIC on the machine loaded XP on the Hyper-V and had chosen the network as virtual switch. No LAN and no internet shows up on the client. Am I missing something? it used to work in 2008-R2. • Sound stopped working on Toshiba Satelite C855

  I have a Toshiba Satallite C855 running Windows 7 with a Realtek High Definition Audio card. Sound worked fine yesterday. Today, my two-year old did something to the machine, and I have no sound. I have adjusted sound through the icon in the lower right corner, and using the Fn keys. I have rebooted. I've verified that there are no external speakers plugged in to the laptop. It seems that this model does not have an external volume control. (If it does I can't find it.) Any ideas?

• unable to install new versions of linux on my PC

  I have an MSI-RC410 motherboard with onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 series Graphics card. I have used OpenSuse-11.0 on my PC for over an year. but when I tried to upgrade to OpenSuse-11.1, I managed to install it only to find that several features were missing. for example /dev/cdrom was missing. Also install DVD of Fedora 11 did not work. I have also tried Ubuntu-9.10 live cd. When I boot from the CD i get the initramfs command prompt. Still able to install old versions of these OSs. What is the reason for this behavior? Does it have to do anything with the new version of the linux kernel not being compatible with my hardware? What should i do to install new versions of Linux?

• How do you change your Airport or Ethernet MAC address in Mac OS X 10.6?

  I have a MacBook Pro and would like to set a custom MAC address for either my Airport WiFi card, or Ethernet port. In older versions of Mac OS X, you could do it like this: $ sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 // Ethernet $ sudo ifconfig en1 lladdr AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF // Airport For it to work on Airport, you'd have to power it on (e.g. $ sudo ifconfig en1 up), ensure it's not connected to any wireless network, and execute the command. I'm aware such a change won't propagate across reboots. Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.6.6 anymore. Apple appears to have removed the functionality (the command fails silently). Does anyone have any idea how to do it? Thanks for any help you can offer! :)

  So I've been working on updating old extensions for use with FF4 and Gecko 2 but I am having some issues where I am getting an error that says, classID missing or incorrect for component.... • How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable. • Mac Mini 1.66 no sound on Windows 7

  I've tried everything I could to get the sound working. I've tried to install the drivers from the Snow Leopard disk, then I went and got the latest RealTek drivers from the RealTek website. Then I read that old Mac mini's could have an integrated Cirrus chip, and I tried to grab the latest driver from the website, and it appeared to install, but nothing. There's also nothing listed under Sound and ... in the Device Manager. I've tried to manually include a legacy driver, which worked for RealTek but not for the Cirrus driver. Of course it said there was no RealTek hardware install, which makes me think it's a Cirrus chip. Any further suggestions or thoughts would be really appreciated. This is a Mac Mini 1.66. I'm also not sure how to be able to detect what card is integrated into the system, so that would be helpful too (remembering that there's no driver installed). Even just to get the chip type would be great to confirm.

• How to enable raid on Gigabyte G33M-S2L?

  I'd like to set up RAID-1 on my Gigabyte G33M-S2L motherboard and for this reason I purchased two 1T hard drives. According to SiSoft Sandra the motherboard does support RAID but it is disabled. I looked everywhere in BIOS even upgraded it to the most recent version but found nothing that would have said "RAID" and the operating system I wish to install sees the two HDDs, not just a RAIDed one. What could be the problem? Does my motherboard support RAID (as the diagnostic tool claims) or do I need to buy a RAID card?

• Using using a DVI instead of a VGA increase computer screen monitor resolution

  This is for a computer screen. Both my video card and computer screen have DVI ports on them but I'm using a VGA. I'm wondering if there would be a difference if i switch from VGA to DVI. My current resolution is 1920x1080 with the VGA cord. will my resolution increase if i switch to a DVI? Are there any advantage of switching from VGA to DVI? If there will be a difference if i switch, I've read there are 5 different type of DVI cables. how do I know which one to buy?

  I have a Proliant ML350 G8 with two SAS raid arrays currently set up - thereby maxing the default P420i raid controller. I need to set up a large video dump space in addition to this existing set-up (for non backed up, non-critical, temporary storage). I had planned to just add a 2TB SATA disk and plug it into the motherboard. However I it occurred to me the motherboard might have built-in mirror RAID support? Therefore I could use two SATA disks and have some semblance of redundancy. Is this possible? Or would I need to get a cheap raid card? Any recommendations?

• Audio input problem in Ubuntu 9.10

  My audio input is a mix of my mic output and my sound card output. I'd like it to be just my mic output. I was able to do so in Ubuntu 9.04 but the interface is 9.10 is totally changed and I tried every my creativity was able to think. It's really annoying when talking to other people over the internet because they keep hearing their voice back. I'm not sure I explained it in clear way so I'll give you an example: What I do: I put an mp3 on play or a video on youtube then open a recorder and start to talk on my mic. What happens: both my voice and audio from mp3/youtube get reordered, even if I put headphones volume to 0 (via hardware). What I'd like to happen: Only my voice should be recorded. I'm sure I'm missing some technical term, but that's the problem and I'd like to solve it in Ubuntu 9.10, any idea?

• Why is windows 7 marking all my extra RAM as "hardware reserved"?

  I have a new HP Z800 Workstation, running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. The machine has 4GB of RAM -- windows reported 1.99GB available, 2GB was "hardware reserved". I added another 2 GB and windows reports that there is 6GB of physical RAM, but now 4GB is "hardware reserved". The BIOS sees the full RAM amount as well. The video card is an nVida Quadro FX 580, so it shouldn't be using any shared memory at all. whats going on? Z800 Specs are here.

• Static Routes and the Routing Table

  This is very much a learning question if someone would be happy to explain a couple of concepts. My question is - the default routing table that exists in, in my case, a default Windows 7 install, what do each of the routes in the table do? Here is a screenshot: The 10.128.4.0 is just a route I've added while messing. I understand from a question I posted on Superuser the first route is just a default route that will route all traffic for any IP to my default gateway on my Interface in use. But what about the others? And how would the routing table handle a machine with multiple NIC's, perhaps connected to two different networks, or maybe even two NIC's on the same network so a VM can have a physical Network card instead of each VM sharing the hosts. • 3ware RAID in Windows 7

  Just moved a 3ware 9500S-8 raid card and a few drives from my linux box into my win7 box. Windows Updates picked up the 3ware driver and installed it. After a reboot I checked Disk Management and it shows the array as one solid drive with the correct size. The only issue is that its not assigned a drive letter and when I right click on it my only option is to Convert to Dynamic Disk... From what I've read this is not something I want to do. What are my options?

• USB to HDMI using just a cable

  I got a cable which has a USB point on one side and an HDMI point on the other side. I was under an impression that I could watch movies from my computer if I connect my computer to the TV using this cable. But looks like I was wrong. Does anyone know if such cable need some driver to make it work? Thanks for any input. (My computer is a Dell All-in-one PC which cannot take an extra graphic card. That's why I am trying my luck with such a cable.)
