  • Can draw on only half of UIView

    - by ydlee777
    Hello. I am trying to draw grid on a UIView on a UIScrollView. The width of UIView is about 1000 pixels. However, I can draw lines only about first 340 pixels of the UIView. Can anyone help me on this? The drawGrid function is - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { NSInteger width = 25 * 5 * 10; NSInteger height = (10 * 2 + 10) * 12; NSInteger i; //Get the CGContext from this view CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); // Draw rectangle with a blue stroke color and white fill color CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor(context, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0); CGContextSetRGBFillColor(context, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 2.0); CGContextAddRect(context, CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, width, height)); CGContextFillPath(context); // Draw grid with red color CGContextSetStrokeColorWithColor(context, [UIColor redColor].CGColor); // Set the width of the pen mark CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 0.2); for (i = 0; i < height; i += 5) { if (i % 25 == 0) { CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 0.4); // Draw a line CGContextMoveToPoint(context, i, 0.0); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, i, width); CGContextStrokePath(context); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 0.2); } else { // Draw a line CGContextMoveToPoint(context, i, 0.0); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, i, width); CGContextStrokePath(context); } } for (i = 0; i < width; i += 5) { if (i % 25 == 0) { CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 0.4); // Draw a line CGContextMoveToPoint(context, 0.0, i); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, height, i); CGContextStrokePath(context); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 0.2); } else { // Draw a line CGContextMoveToPoint(context, 0.0, i); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, height, i); CGContextStrokePath(context); } } } I am also setting up the UIScrollView and UIView as follows: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; CGRect frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height); waveScrollView = [[WaveScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; CGRect waveframe = CGRectMake(0, 0, 25 * 5 * 10, (10 * 2 + 10) * 12); EKGWaveView *ekgWaveView = [[EKGWaveView alloc] initWithFrame:waveframe]; waveScrollView.contentSize = CGSizeMake(waveframe.size.width, waveframe.size.height); waveScrollView.maximumZoomScale = 4.0; waveScrollView.minimumZoomScale = 0.75; waveScrollView.clipsToBounds = YES; waveScrollView.aView = ekgWaveView; [waveScrollView addSubview:ekgWaveView]; waveScrollView.delegate = self; [self.view addSubview:waveScrollView]; } I appreciate any help. Thanks.

  • Do I need to manually create indexes for a DBIx::Class belongs_to relationship

    - by Dancrumb
I'm using the DBIx::Class modules for an ORM approach to an application I have. I'm having some problems with my relationships. I have the following package MySchema::Result::ClusterIP; use strict; use warnings; use base qw/DBIx::Class::Core/; our $VERSION = '1.0'; __PACKAGE__->load_components(qw/InflateColumn::Object::Enum Core/); __PACKAGE__->table('cluster_ip'); __PACKAGE__->add_columns( # Columns here ); __PACKAGE__->set_primary_key('objkey'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'configuration' => 'MySchema::Result::Configuration', 'config_key'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'cluster' => 'MySchema::Result::Cluster', { 'foreign.config_key' => 'self.config_key', 'foreign.id' => 'self.cluster_id' } ); As well as package MySchema::Result::Cluster; use strict; use warnings; use base qw/DBIx::Class::Core/; our $VERSION = '1.0'; __PACKAGE__->load_components(qw/InflateColumn::Object::Enum Core/); __PACKAGE__->table('cluster'); __PACKAGE__->add_columns( # Columns here ); __PACKAGE__->set_primary_key('objkey'); __PACKAGE__->belongs_to( 'configuration' => 'MySchema::Result::Configuration', 'config_key'); __PACKAGE__->has_many('cluster_ip' => 'MySchema::Result::ClusterIP', { 'foreign.config_key' => 'self.config_key', 'foreign.cluster_id' => 'self.id' }); There are a couple of other modules, but I don't believe that they are relevant. When I attempt to deploy this schema, I get the following error: DBIx::Class::Schema::deploy(): DBI Exception: DBD::mysql::db do failed: Can't create table 'test.cluster_ip' (errno: 150) [ for Statement "CREATE TABLE `cluster_ip` ( `objkey` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `config_key` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL, `cluster_id` char(16) NOT NULL, INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key_cluster_id` (`config_key`, `cluster_id`), INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key` (`config_key`), PRIMARY KEY (`objkey`), CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key_cluster_id` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`, `cluster_id`) REFERENCES `cluster` (`config_key`, `id`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE, CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`) REFERENCES `configuration` (`config_key`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ) ENGINE=InnoDB"] at test_deploy.pl line 18 (running "CREATE TABLE `cluster_ip` ( `objkey` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `config_key` smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL, `cluster_id` char(16) NOT NULL, INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key_cluster_id` (`config_key`, `cluster_id`), INDEX `cluster_ip_idx_config_key` (`config_key`), PRIMARY KEY (`objkey`), CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key_cluster_id` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`, `cluster_id`) REFERENC ES `cluster` (`config_key`, `id`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE, CONSTRAINT `cluster_ip_fk_config_key` FOREIGN KEY (`config_key`) REFERENCES `configuration` (`conf ig_key`) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ) ENGINE=InnoDB") at test_deploy.pl line 18 From what I can tell, MySQL is complaining about the FOREIGN KEY constraint, in particular, the REFERENCE to (config_key, id) in the cluster table. From my reading of the MySQL documentation, this seems like a reasonable complaint, especially in regards to the third bullet point on this doc page. Here's my question. Am I missing something in the DBIx::Class module? I realize that I could explicitly create the necessary index to match up with this foreign key constraint, but that seems to be repetitive work. Is there something I should be doing to make this occur implicitly?

  • iphone keyboard won't appear

    - by d_CFO
I can click on the field, and it momentarily turns blue, but those events plus makeFirstResponder together do not cause the keyboard to show on a UITextField. Plain vanilla code follows; I include it so others can discern what is NOT there and therefore what, presumably, with solve the problem. I put in leading spaces to format this question more like code, but the parser seems to have stripped them, thus leaving left-justified code. Sorry! UITextFieldDelete, check: @interface RevenueViewController : UIViewController <UITableViewDelegate, UITableViewDataSource, UITextFieldDelegate> { UILabel *sgmntdControlLabel; UISegmentedControl *sgmntdControl; UITableView *theTableView; } @property(nonatomic,retain) UISegmentedControl *sgmntdControl; @property(nonatomic,retain) UILabel *sgmntdControlLabel; Delegate and source, check. -(void)loadView; // code CGRect frameTable = CGRectMake(10,0,300,260); theTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:frameTable style:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [theTableView setDelegate:self]; [theTableView setDataSource:self]; // code [self.view addSubview:theTableView]; [super viewDidLoad]; } Insert UITextField to cell, check. - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSInteger sectionNmbr = [indexPath section]; NSInteger rowNmbr = [indexPath row]; NSLog(@"cellForRowAtIndexPath=%d, %d",sectionNmbr, rowNmbr); static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; } // Configure the cell. switch (sectionNmbr) { case 0: if (rowNmbr == 0) { cell.tag = 1; cell.textLabel.text = @"Label for sctn 0, row 0"; UITextField *tf = [[UITextField alloc] init]; tf.keyboardType = UIKeyboardTypeNumberPad; tf.returnKeyType = UIReturnKeyDone; tf.delegate = self; [cell.contentView addSubview:tf]; } if (rowNmbr == 1) { cell.tag = 2; cell.textLabel.text = @"Label for sctn 0, row 1"; cell.accessoryType = UITableViewCellAccessoryDetailDisclosureButton; } break; } } Successfully end up where we want to be (?), no check, (and no keyboard!): - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSLog(@"didSelectRowAtIndexPath"); switch (indexPath.section) { case 0: NSLog(@" section=0, rowNmbr=%d",indexPath.row); switch (indexPath.row) { case 0: UITableViewCell *cellSelected = [tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath: indexPath]; UITextField *textField = [[cellSelected.contentView subviews] objectAtIndex: 0]; [ textField setEnabled: YES ]; [textField becomeFirstResponder]; // here is where keyboard will appear? [tableView deselectRowAtIndexPath: indexPath animated: NO]; break; case 1: // code break; default: break; } break; case 1: // code break; default: // handle otherwise un-handled exception break; } } Thank you for your insights!

  • Records not being saved to core data sqlite file

    - by esd100
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to iOS programming and much less Core Data. It's rather non-intuitive for me, as I really came into my own with programming with MATLAB, which I guess is more of a 'scripting' language. At any rate, my problem is that I had no idea what I had to do to create a database for my application. So I read a little bit and thought I had to create a SQL database of my stuff and then import it. Long story short, I created a SQLite db and I want to use the work I have already done to import stuff into my CoreData database. I tried exporting to comma-delimited files and xml files and reading those in, but I didn't like it and it seemed like an extra step that I shouldn't need to do. So, I imported the SQLite database into my resources and added the sqlite framework. I have my core data model setup and it is setting up the SQLite database for the model correctly in the background. When I run through my program to add objects to my entities, it seems to work and I can even fetch results afterward. However, when I inspect the Core Data Database SQLite file, no records have been saved. How is it possible for it to fetch results but not save them to the database? - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions{ //load in the path for resources NSString *paths = [[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath]; NSString *databaseName = @"histology.sqlite"; NSString *databasePath = [paths stringByAppendingPathComponent:databaseName]; [self createDatabase:databasePath ]; NSError *error; if ([[self managedObjectContext] save:&error]) { NSLog(@"Whoops, couldn't save: %@", [error localizedDescription]); } // Test listing all CELLS from the store NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; NSEntityDescription *entityMO = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"CELL" inManagedObjectContext:[self managedObjectContext]]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entityMO]; NSArray *fetchedObjects = [[self managedObjectContext] executeFetchRequest:fetchRequest error:&error]; for (CELL *cellName in fetchedObjects) { //NSLog(@"cellName: %@", cellName); } -(void) createDatabase:databasePath { NSLog(@"The createDatabase function was entered."); NSLog(@"The databasePath is %@ ",[databasePath description]); // Setup the database object sqlite3 *histoDatabase; // Open the database from filessytem if(sqlite3_open([databasePath UTF8String], &histoDatabase) == SQLITE_OK) { NSLog(@"The database was opened"); // Setup the SQL Statement and compile it for faster access const char *sqlStatement = "SELECT * FROM CELL"; sqlite3_stmt *compiledStatement; if(sqlite3_prepare_v2(histoDatabase, sqlStatement, -1, &compiledStatement, NULL) != SQLITE_OK) { NSAssert1(0, @"Error while creating add statement. '%s'", sqlite3_errmsg(histoDatabase)); } if(sqlite3_prepare_v2(histoDatabase, sqlStatement, -1, &compiledStatement, NULL) == SQLITE_OK) { // Loop through the results and add them to cell MO array while(sqlite3_step(compiledStatement) == SQLITE_ROW) { CELL *cellMO = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"CELL" inManagedObjectContext:[self managedObjectContext]]; if (sqlite3_column_type(compiledStatement, 0) != SQLITE_NULL) { cellMO.cellName = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 0)]; } else { cellMO.cellName = @"undefined"; } if (sqlite3_column_type(compiledStatement, 1) != SQLITE_NULL) { cellMO.cellDescription = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)sqlite3_column_text(compiledStatement, 1)]; } else { cellMO.cellDescription = @"undefined"; } NSLog(@"The contents of NSString *cellName = %@",[cellMO.cellName description]); } } // Release the compiled statement from memory sqlite3_finalize(compiledStatement); } sqlite3_close(histoDatabase); } I have a feeling that it has something to do with the timing of opening/closing both of the databases? • CoreData update problems

    - by kpower
    My app makes updates in background thread then saves context changes. And in main context there is a table view that works with NSFetchedResultsController. For some time updates work correctly, but then exception is thrown. To check this I've added NSLog(@"%@", [self.controller fetchedObjects]); to -controllerDidChangeContent:. Here is what I got: "<PRBattle: 0x6d30530> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d319d0 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p2> ; data: {\n battleId = \"-1\";\n finishedAt = \"2012-11-06 11:37:36 +0000\";\n opponent = \"0x6d2f730 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p1>\";\n opponentScore = nil;\n score = nil;\n status = 4;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d306f0> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d319f0 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p1> ; data: {\n battleId = \"-1\";\n finishedAt = \"2012-11-06 11:37:36 +0000\";\n opponent = \"0x6d2ddb0 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p3>\";\n opponentScore = nil;\n score = nil;\n status = 4;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d30830> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d31650 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p11> ; data: <fault>)", "<PRBattle: 0x6d306b0> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d319e0 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p5> ; data: {\n battleId = 325;\n finishedAt = nil;\n opponent = \"0x6d2f730 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p1>\";\n opponentScore = 91;\n score = 59;\n status = 3;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d30730> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d31a00 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p6> ; data: {\n battleId = 323;\n finishedAt = nil;\n opponent = \"0x6d2ddb0 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p3>\";\n opponentScore = 0;\n score = 0;\n status = 3;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d307b0> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d31630 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p9> ; data: {\n battleId = 370;\n finishedAt = \"2012-11-06 14:24:14 +0000\";\n opponent = \"0x79a8e90 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p2>\";\n opponentScore = 180;\n score = 180;\n status = 4;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d307f0> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d31640 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p10> ; data: {\n battleId = 309;\n finishedAt = \"2012-11-02 01:19:27 +0000\";\n opponent = \"0x79a8e90 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p2>\";\n opponentScore = 120;\n score = 240;\n status = 4;\n})", "<PRBattle: 0x6d30770> (entity: PRBattle; id: 0x6d31620 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PRBattle/p7> ; data: {\n battleId = 315;\n finishedAt = \"2012-11-02 02:26:24 +0000\";\n opponent = \"0x79a8e90 <x-coredata://882BD521-90CD-4682-B19A-000A4976E471/PROpponent/p2>\";\n opponentScore = 119;\n score = 179;\n status = 4;\n})" ) Faulted object (0xe972610) here causes crash. • Class member functions instantiated by traits [policies, actually]

    - by Jive Dadson
    I am reluctant to say I can't figure this out, but I can't figure this out. I've googled and searched Stack Overflow, and come up empty. The abstract, and possibly overly vague form of the question is, how can I use the traits-pattern to instantiate member functions? [Update: I used the wrong term here. It should be "policies" rather than "traits." Traits describe existing classes. Policies prescribe synthetic classes.] The question came up while modernizing a set of multivariate function optimizers that I wrote more than 10 years ago. The optimizers all operate by selecting a straight-line path through the parameter space away from the current best point (the "update"), then finding a better point on that line (the "line search"), then testing for the "done" condition, and if not done, iterating. There are different methods for doing the update, the line-search, and conceivably for the done test, and other things. Mix and match. Different update formulae require different state-variable data. For example, the LMQN update requires a vector, and the BFGS update requires a matrix. If evaluating gradients is cheap, the line-search should do so. If not, it should use function evaluations only. Some methods require more accurate line-searches than others. Those are just some examples. The original version instantiates several of the combinations by means of virtual functions. Some traits are selected by setting mode bits that are tested at runtime. Yuck. It would be trivial to define the traits with #define's and the member functions with #ifdef's and macros. But that's so twenty years ago. It bugs me that I cannot figure out a whiz-bang modern way. If there were only one trait that varied, I could use the curiously recurring template pattern. But I see no way to extend that to arbitrary combinations of traits. I tried doing it using boost::enable_if, etc.. The specialized state information was easy. I managed to get the functions done, but only by resorting to non-friend external functions that have the this-pointer as a parameter. I never even figured out how to make the functions friends, much less member functions. The compiler (VC++ 2008) always complained that things didn't match. I would yell, "SFINAE, you moron!" but the moron is probably me. Perhaps tag-dispatch is the key. I haven't gotten very deeply into that. Surely it's possible, right? If so, what is best practice? UPDATE: Here's another try at explaining it. I want the user to be able to fill out an order (manifest) for a custom optimizer, something like ordering off of a Chinese menu - one from column A, one from column B, etc.. Waiter, from column A (updaters), I'll have the BFGS update with Cholesky-decompositon sauce. From column B (line-searchers), I'll have the cubic interpolation line-search with an eta of 0.4 and a rho of 1e-4, please. Etc... UPDATE: Okay, okay. Here's the playing-around that I've done. I offer it reluctantly, because I suspect it's a completely wrong-headed approach. It runs okay under vc++ 2008. #include <boost/utility.hpp> #include <boost/type_traits/integral_constant.hpp> namespace dj { struct CBFGS { void bar() {printf("CBFGS::bar %d\n", data);} CBFGS(): data(1234){} int data; }; template<class T> struct is_CBFGS: boost::false_type{}; template<> struct is_CBFGS<CBFGS>: boost::true_type{}; struct LMQN {LMQN(): data(54.321){} void bar() {printf("LMQN::bar %lf\n", data);} double data; }; template<class T> struct is_LMQN: boost::false_type{}; template<> struct is_LMQN<LMQN> : boost::true_type{}; // "Order form" struct default_optimizer_traits { typedef CBFGS update_type; // Selection from column A - updaters }; template<class traits> class Optimizer; template<class traits> void foo(typename boost::enable_if<is_LMQN<typename traits::update_type>, Optimizer<traits> >::type& self) { printf(" LMQN %lf\n", self.data); } template<class traits> void foo(typename boost::enable_if<is_CBFGS<typename traits::update_type>, Optimizer<traits> >::type& self) { printf("CBFGS %d\n", self.data); } template<class traits = default_optimizer_traits> class Optimizer{ friend typename traits::update_type; //friend void dj::foo<traits>(typename Optimizer<traits> & self); // How? public: //void foo(void); // How??? void foo() { dj::foo<traits>(*this); } void bar() { data.bar(); } //protected: // How? typedef typename traits::update_type update_type; update_type data; }; } // namespace dj int main() { dj::Optimizer<> opt; opt.foo(); opt.bar(); std::getchar(); return 0; }

  • ASP.NET WebAPI Security 2: Identity Architecture

    - by Your DisplayName here!
Pedro has beaten me to the punch with a detailed post (and diagram) about the WebAPI hosting architecture. So go read his post first, then come back so we can have a closer look at what that means for security. The first important takeaway is that WebAPI is hosting independent-  currently it ships with two host integration implementations – one for ASP.NET (aka web host) and WCF (aka self host). Pedro nicely shows the integration into the web host. Self hosting is not done yet so we will mainly focus on the web hosting case and I will point out security related differences when they exist. The interesting part for security (amongst other things of course) is the HttpControllerHandler (see Pedro’s diagram) – this is where the host specific representation of an HTTP request gets converted to the WebAPI abstraction (called HttpRequestMessage). The ConvertRequest method does the following: Create a new HttpRequestMessage. Copy URI, method and headers from the HttpContext. Copies HttpContext.User to the Properties<string, object> dictionary on the HttpRequestMessage. The key used for that can be found on HttpPropertyKeys.UserPrincipalKey (which resolves to “MS_UserPrincipal”). So the consequence is that WebAPI receives whatever IPrincipal has been set by the ASP.NET pipeline (in the web hosting case). Common questions are: Are there situations where is property does not get set? Not in ASP.NET – the DefaultAuthenticationModule in the HTTP pipeline makes sure HttpContext.User (and Thread.CurrentPrincipal – more on that later) are always set. Either to some authenticated user – or to an anonymous principal. This may be different in other hosting environments (again more on that later). Why so generic? Keep in mind that WebAPI is hosting independent and may run on a host that materializes identity completely different compared to ASP.NET (or .NET in general). This gives them a way to evolve the system in the future. How does WebAPI code retrieve the current client identity? HttpRequestMessage has an extension method called GetUserPrincipal() which returns the property as an IPrincipal. A quick look at self hosting shows that the moral equivalent of HttpControllerHandler.ConvertRequest() is HttpSelfHostServer.ProcessRequestContext(). Here the principal property gets only set when the host is configured for Windows authentication (inconsisteny). Do I like that? Well – yes and no. Here are my thoughts: I like that it is very straightforward to let WebAPI inherit the client identity context of the host. This might not always be what you want – think of an ASP.NET app that consists of UI and APIs – the UI might use Forms authentication, the APIs token based authentication. So it would be good if the two parts would live in a separate security world. It makes total sense to have this generic hand off point for identity between the host and WebAPI. It also makes total sense for WebAPI plumbing code (especially handlers) to use the WebAPI specific identity abstraction. But – c’mon we are running on .NET. And the way .NET represents identity is via IPrincipal/IIdentity. That’s what every .NET developer on this planet is used to. So I would like to see a User property of type IPrincipal on ApiController. I don’t like the fact that Thread.CurrentPrincipal is not populated. T.CP is a well established pattern as a one stop shop to retrieve client identity on .NET.  That makes a lot of sense – even if the name is misleading at best. There might be existing library code you want to call from WebAPI that makes use of T.CP (e.g. PrincipalPermission, or a simple .Name or .IsInRole()). Having the client identity as an ambient property is useful for code that does not have access to the current HTTP request (for calling GetUserPrincipal()). I don’t like the fact that that the client identity conversion from host to WebAPI is inconsistent. This makes writing security plumbing code harder. I think the logic should always be: If the host has a client identity representation, copy it. If not, set an anonymous principal on the request message. Btw – please don’t annoy me with the “but T.CP is static, and static is bad for testing” chant. T.CP is a getter/setter and, in fact I find it beneficial to be able to set different security contexts in unit tests before calling in some logic. And, in case you have wondered – T.CP is indeed thread static (and the name comes from a time where a logical operation was bound to a thread – which is not true anymore). But all thread creation APIs in .NET actually copy T.CP to the new thread they create. This is the case since .NET 2.0 and is certainly an improvement compared to how Win32 does things. So to sum it up: The host plumbing copies the host client identity to WebAPI (this is not perfect yet, but will surely be improved). or in other words: The current WebAPI bits don’t ship with any authentication plumbing, but solely use whatever authentication (and thus client identity) is set up by the host. WebAPI developers can retrieve the client identity from the HttpRequestMessage. Hopefully my proposed changes around T.CP and the User property on ApiController will be added. In the next post, I will detail how to add WebAPI specific authentication support, e.g. for Basic Authentication and tokens. This includes integrating the notion of claims based identity. After that we will look at the built-in authorization bits and how to improve them as well. Stay tuned.

  • SPARC T4-4 Delivers World Record First Result on PeopleSoft Combined Benchmark

    - by Brian
Oracle's SPARC T4-4 servers running Oracle's PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 combined online and batch benchmark achieved World Record 18,000 concurrent users while executing a PeopleSoft Payroll batch job of 500,000 employees in 43.32 minutes and maintaining online users response time at < 2 seconds. This world record is the first to run online and batch workloads concurrently. This result was obtained with a SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Database 11g Release 2, a SPARC T4-4 server running PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 application server and a SPARC T4-2 server running Oracle WebLogic Server in the web tier. The SPARC T4-4 server running the application tier used Oracle Solaris Zones which provide a flexible, scalable and manageable virtualization environment. The average CPU utilization on the SPARC T4-2 server in the web tier was 17%, on the SPARC T4-4 server in the application tier it was 59%, and on the SPARC T4-4 server in the database tier was 35% (online and batch) leaving significant headroom for additional processing across the three tiers. The SPARC T4-4 server used for the database tier hosted Oracle Database 11g Release 2 using Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) for database files management with I/O performance equivalent to raw devices. This is the first three tier mixed workload (online and batch) PeopleSoft benchmark also processing PeopleSoft payroll batch workload. The PeopleSoft HRSS benchmark kit is a Oracle standard benchmark kit run by all platform vendors to measure the performance. It's an OLTP benchmark where DB SQLs are moderately complex. The results are certified by Oracle and a white paper is published. PeopleSoft HR SS defines a business transaction as a series of HTML pages that guide a user through a particular scenario. Users are defined as corporate Employees, Managers and HR administrators. The benchmark consist of 14 scenarios which emulate users performing typical HCM transactions such as viewing paycheck, promoting and hiring employees, updating employee profile and other typical HCM application transactions. All these transactions are well-defined in the PeopleSoft HR Self-Service 9.1 benchmark kit. This benchmark metric is the weighted average response search/save time for all the transactions. The PeopleSoft 9.1 Payroll (North America) benchmark demonstrates system performance for a range of processing volumes in a specific configuration. This workload represents large batch runs typical of a ERP environment during a mass update. The benchmark measures five application business process run times for a database representing large organization. They are Paysheet Creation, Payroll Calculation, Payroll Confirmation, Print Advice forms, and Create Direct Deposit File. The benchmark metric is the cumulative elapsed time taken to complete the Paysheet Creation, Payroll Calculation and Payroll Confirmation business application processes. The benchmark metrics are taken for each respective benchmark while running simultaneously on the same database back-end. Specifically, the payroll batch processes are started when the online workload reaches steady state (the maximum number of online users) and overlap with online transactions for the duration of the steady state. Key Points and Best Practices Two Oracle PeopleSoft Domain sets with 200 application servers each on a SPARC T4-4 server were hosted in 2 separate Oracle Solaris Zones to demonstrate consolidation of multiple application servers, ease of administration and performance tuning. Each Oracle Solaris Zone was bound to a separate processor set, each containing 15 cores (total 120 threads). The default set (1 core from first and third processor socket, total 16 threads) was used for network and disk interrupt handling. This was done to improve performance by reducing memory access latency by using the physical memory closest to the processors and offload I/O interrupt handling to default set threads, freeing up cpu resources for Application Servers threads and balancing application workload across 240 threads. • Kendo UI Mobile with Knockout for Master-Detail Views

    - by Steve Michelotti
Lately I’ve been playing with Kendo UI Mobile to build iPhone apps. It’s similar to jQuery Mobile in that they are both HTML5/JavaScript based frameworks for buildings mobile apps. The primary thing that drew me to investigate Kendo UI was its innate ability to adaptively render a native looking app based on detecting the device it’s currently running on. In other words, it will render to look like a native iPhone app if it’s running on an iPhone and it will render to look like a native Droid app if it’s running on a Droid. This is in contrast to jQuery Mobile which looks the same on all devices and, therefore, it can never quite look native for whatever device it’s running on. My first impressions of Kendo UI were great. Using HTML5 data-* attributes to define “roles” for UI elements is easy, the rendering looked great, and the basic navigation was simple and intuitive. However, I ran into major confusion when trying to figure out how to “correctly” build master-detail views. Since I was already very family with KnockoutJS, I set out to use that framework in conjunction with Kendo UI Mobile to build the following simple scenario: I wanted to have a simple “Task Manager” application where my first screen just showed a list of tasks like this:   Then clicking on a specific task would navigate to a detail screen that would show all details of the specific task that was selected:   Basic navigation between views in Kendo UI is simple. The href of an <a> tag just needs to specify a hash tag followed by the ID of the view to navigate to as shown in this jsFiddle (notice the href of the <a> tag matches the id of the second view):   Direct link to jsFiddle: here. That is all well and good but the problem I encountered was: how to pass data between the views? Specifically, I need the detail view to display all the details of whichever task was selected. If I was doing this with my typical technique with KnockoutJS, I know exactly what I would do. First I would create a view model that had my collection of tasks and a property for the currently selected task like this: 1: function ViewModel() { 2: var self = this; 3: self.tasks = ko.observableArray(data); 4: self.selectedTask = ko.observable(null); 5: } Then I would bind my list of tasks to the unordered list - I would attach a “click” handler to each item (each <li> in the unordered list) so that it would select the “selectedTask” for the view model. The problem I found is this approach simply wouldn’t work for Kendo UI Mobile. It completely ignored the click handlers that I was trying to attach to the <a> tags – it just wanted to look at the href (at least that’s what I observed). But if I can’t intercept this, then *how* can I pass data or any context to the next view? The only thing I was able to find in the Kendo documentation is that you can pass query string arguments on the view name you’re specifying in the href. This enabled me to do the following: Specify the task ID in each href – something like this: <a href=”#taskDetail?id=3></a> Attach an “init method” (via the “data-show” attribute on the details view) that runs whenever the view is activated Inside this “init method”, grab the task ID passed from the query string to look up the item from my view model’s list of tasks in order to set the selected task I was able to get all that working with about 20 lines of JavaScript as shown in this jsFiddle. If you click on the Results tab, you can navigate between views and see the the detail screen is correctly binding to the selected item:   Direct link to jsFiddle: here.   With all that being done, I was very happy to get it working with the behavior I wanted. However, I have no idea if that is the “correct” way to do it or if there is a “better” way to do it. I know that Kendo UI comes with its own data binding framework but my preference is to be able to use (the well-documented) KnockoutJS since I’m already familiar with that framework rather than having to learn yet another new framework. While I think my solution above is probably “acceptable”, there are still a couple of things that bug me about it. First, it seems odd that I have to loop through my items to *find* my selected item based on the ID that was passed on the query string - normally, with Knockout I can just refer directly to my selected item from where it was used. Second, it didn’t feel exactly right that I had to rely on the “data-show” method of the details view to set my context – normally with Knockout, I could just attach a click handler to the <a> tag that was actually clicked by the user in order to set the “selected item.” I’m not sure if I’m being too picky. I know there are many people that have *way* more expertise in Kendo UI compared to me – I’d be curious to know if there are better ways to achieve the same results.

  • Oracle RightNow CX for Good Customer Experiences

    - by Andreea Vaduva
Oracle RightNow CX is all about the customer experience, it’s about understanding what drives a good interaction and it’s about delivering a solution which works for our customers and by extension, their customers. One of the early guiding principles of Oracle RightNow was an 8-point strategy to providing good customer experiences. Establish a knowledge foundation Empowering the customer Empower employees Offer multi-channel choice Listen to the customer Design seamless experiences Engage proactively Measure and improve continuously The application suite provides all of the tools necessary to deliver a rewarding, repeatable and measurable relationship between business and customer. The Knowledge Authoring tool provides gap analysis, WYSIWIG editing (and includes HTML rich content for non-developers), multi-level categorisation, permission based publishing and Web self-service publishing. Oracle RightNow Customer Portal, is a complete web application framework that enables businesses to control their own end-user page branding experience, which in turn will allow customers to self-serve. The Contact Centre Experience Designer builds a combination of workspaces, agent scripting and guided assistances into a Desktop Workflow. These present an agent with the tools they need, at the time they need them, providing even the newest and least experienced advisors with consistently accurate and efficient information, whilst guiding them through the complexities of internal business processes. Oracle RightNow provides access points for customers to feedback about specific knowledge articles or about the support site in general. The system will generate ‘incidents’ based on the scoring of the comments submitted. This makes it easy to view and respond to customer feedback. It is vital, more now than ever, not to under-estimate the power of the social web – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube – they have the ability to cause untold amounts of damage to businesses with a single post – witness musician Dave Carroll and his protest song on YouTube, posted in response to poor customer services from an American airline. The first day saw 150,000 views and is currently at 12,011,375. The Times reported that within 4 days of the post, the airline’s stock price fell by 10 percent, which represented a cost to shareholders of $180 million dollars. It is a universally acknowledged fact, that when customers are unhappy, they will not come back, and, generally speaking, it only takes one bad experience to lose a customer. The idea that customer loyalty can be regained by using social media channels was the subject of a 2011 Survey commissioned by RightNow and conducted by Harris Interactive. The survey discovered that 68% of customers who posted a negative review about a holiday on a social networking site received a response from the business. It further found that 33% subsequently posted a positive review and 34% removed the original negative review. Cloud Monitor provides the perfect mechanism for seeing what is being said about a business on public Facebook pages, Twitter or YouTube posts; it allows agents to respond proactively – either by creating an Oracle RightNow incident or by using the same channel as the original post. This leaves step 8 – Measuring and Improving: How does a business know whether it’s doing the right thing? How does it know if its customers are happy? How does it know if its staff are being productive? How does it know if its staff are being effective? Cue Oracle RightNow Analytics – fully integrated across the entire platform – Service, Marketing and Sales – there are in excess of 800 standard reports. If this were not enough, a large proportion of the database has been made available via the administration console, allowing users without any prior database experience to write their own reports, format them and schedule them for e-mail delivery to a distribution list. It handles the complexities of table joins, and allows for the manipulation of data with ease. Oracle RightNow believes strongly in the customer owning their solution, and to provide the best foundation for success, Oracle University can give you the RightNow knowledge and skills you need. This is a selection of the courses offered: RightNow Customer Service Administration Rel 12.02 (3 days) Available as In Class and Live Virtual Class (Release 11.11 is available as In Class, Live Virtual Class and Training On Demand) This course familiarises users with the tasks and concepts needed to configure and maintain their system. • career advice for PhD scientist seeking to program?

    - by C SD
I'm largely a self-taught programmer. In fact, I first started programming about half way through biophysics grad school, and even though I think I've done some pretty nice work, I've never worked as part of a 'serious' development team that had more than one or two other developers (and I wouldn't hesitate to call them equally inexperienced in software development as a profession). After finishing my PhD I applied to Google, on a lark, since I had some confidence in my abilities, if not necessarily my experience, and I was hoping to maybe slip in and absorb all the experience and talent I'd be surrounded with and become productive enough, quickly enough, that they wouldn't immediately regret their decision. I was excited to actually get invited to interview up at Mountain View (this was ~ mid 2008). Overall, my memory of the interview was very positive, but after close to a three month wait (is that normal?) they ended up turning me down. I wasn't too surprised or disappointed (aside from the uncomfortably long wait) given my unusual background and admitted lack of experience. I decided to continue as a postdoc, but focus on improving my skills rather than doing research. I've done about three years of that, and my honest assessment is that I've learned a ton more, but I really need more of a peer group to maintain or accelerate my growth. Google invited me to interview again about eight months ago, and the interview process went even better than the first time around (I thought), though they again declined to give me an offer. I have to admit this second rejection was much more discouraging. They had insisted I interview even after I mentioned to them that a move on my part was unlikely given that I had bought a house, gotten married, etc. since the first interview. I guess I was hoping they'd at least give me an offer that I could parlay into a more conventional, but still interesting, programming position close to home. So here I am, going on my third year out of grad school, a glorified postdoc and I'm starting to get pretty discouraged. Even though I could technically get 'back-on-track' for a career in science, I have been focusing the vast majority of this time on gaining programming experience rather than on research and publications. The problem is, whenever I look, most job listings have requirements that seem impossibly grandiose and I hesitate to apply. That, or the job/project seems incredibly dull. Ironically, applying to Google struck me as less intimidating. I suspect that either most people are just a lot less realistic than I am when it comes to assessing how long it will take for them to get up to speed, or they don't care; my fear is that I'm just woefully unqualified for any interesting, well paying work. IE: I'm confident I could switch fully back into C++ mode with a couple weeks work (I mostly use C,Python,C# daily) but I don't list myself as being 'proficient' in C++ on my CV, or applying for jobs that 'require' such knowledge. The few applications for which I did feel I was a legitimately good match have not elicited a response. I suspect the following things are potential problems with my application/CV and I would like feedback on: I don't have a CS degree. My BS was in biochemistry and molecular biology, my PhD in biophysics. I took a undergrad and grad level CS course at UCSD and completely killed them, but I don't know how to translate that to my CV effectively. I have a PhD, but it's not in CS... I've been debating if I should remove it from my CV, and wether or not it would then be misleading to list at least some of those years as some kind of 'programming' job (in many respects it was). I think there are sometimes strong stigmas associated with 'self-taught' programmers. I am certainly one of those. I even recognize that some of those stigmas hold a hint of truth, but I really do want to be an asset to a team. How do I communicate that even though I have been largely self-directing for ~8 years I can still take marching orders when needed? Do I just say so outright? Should I just become a lot less scrupulous about the whole process? anecdote: I have a friend who applied for positions where he completely fudged his qualifications to get past the first culling. He was much more honest and forthcoming about his actual qualifications when contacted and he still managed to get invited to a couple of interviews and even got some offers. His balls are larger than mine though.

  • Drive Online Engagement with Intuitive Portals and Websites

    - by kellsey.ruppel
As more and more business is being conducted via online channels, engaging users and making them more productive and efficient though these online channels is becoming critical. These users could be customers, partners or employees and while the respective channels through which they interact might be different, these users do increasingly interact with your business through the Web, or mobile devices or now through various social mediums.  Businesses need a user engagement strategy and solution that allows them to deliver targeted and personalized content and applications to users through the various online mediums and touch points.  The customer experience today is made up of an ongoing set of interactions with organizations across many channels, online and offline.  The Direct channel (including sales reps, email and mail) is an important point of contact, as is the Contact Center.  Contact Centers rely on the phone as a means of interacting with customers, and also more now than ever, the Web as well.  However, the online organization is often managed separately from the Contact Center organization within a business. In-store is an important channel for retailers, offering Point-of-Service for human interactions, and Kiosks which enable self-service. Kiosks are a Web-enabled touch point but in-store kiosks are often managed by the head of retail operations, rather than the online organization.  And of course, the online channel, including customer interactions with an organization via digital means -- on the website, mobile websites, and social networking sites, has risen to paramount importance in recent years in the customer experience. Historically all of these channels have been managed separately. The result of all of this fragmentation is that the customer touch points with an organization are siloed.  Their interactions online are not known and respected in their dealings in-store.  Their calls to the contact center are not taken as input into what the website offers them when they arrive. Think of how many times you’ve fallen victim to this. Your experience with the company call center is different than the experience in-store. Your experience with the company website on your desktop computer is different than your experience on your iPad. I think you get the point. But the customer isn’t the only one we need to look at here, as employees and the IT organization have challenges as well when it comes to online engagement. There are many common tools and technologies that organizations have been using to try and engage users, whether it’s customers, employees or partners. Some have adopted different blog and wiki technologies (some hosted, some open source, sometimes embedded in platforms), to things like tagging, file sharing and content management, or composite applications for self-service applications and activity streams. Basically, there are so many different tools & technologies that each address different aspects of user engagement. Now, one of the challenges with this, is that if we look at each individual tool, typically just implementing for example a file sharing and basic collaboration solution, may meet the needs of the business user for one aspect of user engagement, but it may not be the best solution to engage with customers and partners, or it may not fit with IT standards such as integrating with their single sign on tools or their corporate website. Often, the scenario is that businesses are having to acquire multiple pieces and parts as well as build custom applications to meet their needs. Leaving customers and partners with a more fragmented way of interacting with the company. Every organization has some sort of enterprise balancing act between the needs of the business user and the needs and restrictions enforced by enterprise IT groups. As we’ve been discussing, we all know that the expectations for online engagement have changed since the days of the static, one-size fits all website. With these changes have come some very difficult organizational challenges as well. Today, as a business user, you want to engage with your customers, and your customers expect you to know who they are. They expect you to recall the details they’ve provided to you on your website, to your CSRs and to your sales people. They expect you to remember their purchases, their preferences and their problems. And they expect you to know who they are, equally well, across channels, including your web presence. This creates a host of challenges for today’s business users. Delivering targeted, relevant content online is now essential for converting prospects into customers and for engendering long term loyalty. Business users need the ability to leverage customer data from different sources to fuel their segmentation and targeting strategies and to easily set-up, manage and optimize online campaigns. • With Its MySQL Database-as-a-Service CERN Empowers Scientists

    - by Bertrand Matthelié
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers for scientific research. Founded in 1954 and located near Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN was one of Europe’s first joint ventures. Today, it has 20 member states. The organization uses the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and the origin of the universe. • Copy & Paste Images Wiki functionality?

    - by Jakub
I was discussing this with some coworkers, they would like a wiki, but are turned off by the need to constantly [browse] and [upload] files. They like the functionality of Lotus Notes that they can copy & paste screenshots (or crops etc) directly into Notes databases / libraries. But they are not fans of Lotus notes behond that (performance, etc,) Anyone work with a free (open source hopefully) wiki of documenting application that just allows copy & paste of text & image content? Would be great to have one internally installed that we could use for documentation without constantly uploading/attaching files. Not sure if I am asking for functionality that is not available in a browser.

  • How do I capture the output of a tty while still allowing sent characters to reach the correct desti

    - by Zak
I currently have some systems that multiple people have access to for administration purposes. We've modified the history log so that we capture 2k lines of history per user to help aid in who has done what on the system. However, we would additionally like to capture all keyboard input when we (the administrators) log in, and log it to a file so we can see what changes were made to files once people go into vi to edit them. It will also aid us in documenting when we are going through a compile of software and the like. How can I do this? CentOS 5.4 if it makes a difference.

  • I can see markup characters in vim `:help`

    - by Relax
I just created a .txt file inside .vim/doc for documenting one little function of my .vimrc, ran :helptags ~/.vim/doc and apparently the whole vim help system went wild. Now, if I open for example :help help, I see things like: This also works together with other characters, for example to find help for CTRL-V in Insert mode: > :help i^V < (notice the < and characters). I can also see the ~ at the end of headlines and the modeline at the end of the help page (thinks like vim:tw=78:ts=8:ft=help:norl:). I have no idea about what happens or how to fix it. Any clue? Thanks in advance!

  • Clone current host OS to a guest virtual machine.

    - by ProfKaos
I would like to run a few repeated checks on a setup procedure I am documenting, to verify my document. I would like to somehow create a VM that replicates the environment on my machine, i.e. the host machine, onto a guest VM. Then I can use Windows' System Restore on the guest to start at the point before I commenced the setup procedure and repeat it as many times as required until no more trial-and-error etc. is required to supplement my document. I have Virtual PC and VirtualBox available to install as host environments, running on Windows 7 Professional.

  • SQL SERVER – Tricks to Comment T-SQL in SSMS – SQL in Sixty Seconds #019 – Video

    - by pinaldave
Code commeting is the one of the most common tasks developers perform. There are two major reasons why developer comment code. 1) During Debug 2) Documenting the code. While debugging the T-SQL code I have often seen developers struggling to comment code.  They spend (or waste) more time in commenting and uncommenting  than doing actual debugging of the procedure.  When I see developer struggling to comment the code I feel little uncomfortable as commenting should be a very easy task over. Today we will see three quick method to comment T-SQL code in Query Editor. There are three different method to comment and uncomment statements in SQL Server Management Studio Using Keyboard Shortcuts Using Tool Bar Using Menu Bar Method 1: Using Keyboard Shortcuts Commenting the statement – CTRL+K, CTRL+C Commenting the statement – CTRL+K, CTRL+U Method 2: Using Tool Bar Using Tool bar buttons. (See Video) Method 3: Using Menu Bar Commenting the statement – Menu Bar >> Edit >> Advanced >> Click on Comment Selection. Unommenting the statement – Menu Bar >> Edit >> Advanced >> Click on Uncomment Selection. More on Importing CSV Data: Two Different Ways to Comment Code – Explanation and Example I encourage you to submit your ideas for SQL in Sixty Seconds. We will try to accommodate as many as we can. If we like your idea we promise to share with you educational material.
