• IIS 6.0 subdomains with host headers and non existent subdomains

  Hey Everyone - We have a wildcard A-Record pointing to our IP and have a number of sites running on IIS 6 with host headers and have a a wildcard SSL certificate for the domain so that each site can run under SSL. For example: https://A.foo.com https:/B.foo.com https:/C.foo.com Everything is working well but I noticed that when we type a non existent subdomain, say D.foo.com, it redirects to A.foo.com. Any idea why that is or how I can change that? I think we may have set up the A.foo.com site before we applied the wildcard A-record with our domain provider and before we had set up the SSL cert. • Losing internet connectivity on server after installing LogMeIn Hamachi (with server set as gateway node)

  Our domain controller (SBS 2003) completely lost internet and network connectivity yesterday after I remotely installed LogMeIn Hamachi on it and set it to be a gateway node- in an attempt to create a VPN link between the server and a remote site. I had to go in to the office to resolve the problem as, unsurprisingly, my own remote access to the server was also lost. I was only able to restore network connectivity by deleting a virtual network adapter Hamachi created when making the server the gateway node (called "Hamachi bridge" I believe), then rebooting the server. This is a repeatable problem. Every time I try to get this to work, it just takes the server offline. Why would this bridge affect regular TCP/IP connectivity on the NIC in this way? I have tried a "hub-and-spoke" configuration between the server and our PC at a remote site (server set as hub, remote site as spoke). This caused no such problems with general internet connectivity, and file transfer worked well between the two computers. However, there was a DNS issue with the VPN between the two sites- resulting in Active Directory not being able to communicate between them (could not log on using domain user accounts at remote site if they were not already cached on that machine). I only tried a "gateway" network as LogMeIn support told me: If you can get the Active Directory to work it would only be through a "Gateway" network type with the server acting as the Gateway Node. You would configure the gateway settings on the server in the Hamachi client on that machine to push whatever IP's/DNS settings you prefer and at that point AD would be able (all things being equal) communicate to the client node when it attaches. We do not have any ActiveDirectory configuration info as that's outside the scope of our support. I hope this helps. It would be fantastic if I could get Active Directory to work over a Hamachi VPN connection, without worrying about the server going offline in this way. Does anyone have any ideas how I should proceed, or any theories as to what is going on when I try to use the "gateway" network type? I want to try to narrow down what is going on here.

• Opera: closed window w/many tabs, window still open w/one tab, how to retrieve the many tabs

  This is a little recipe for a little disaster: accidentally close a window with many important tabs open, only to find out that another window is still active with one tab open. Closing it will overwrite the saved tabs of the other window, which I want to recover. I need to recover the window with "many tabs" if possible,I didn't yet close the window with the one tab open, hopefully that prevents overwriting the saved settings. How do I retrieve, now that Opera is still active, the tabs of the closed window? I.e., where would Opera normally store these tabs when it closes a window? Can I prevent it from overwriting the saved state of "many tabs" with the current "one tab"?

  There is some error reported when I run Disk Utility and verify the root volume on my OS X MacBook. So I boot and CMD-S into the shell mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy. Errors are like: ** Checking catalog file. Missing thread record (id = ...) In correct number of thread records ** Checking catalog hierarchy. Invalid volume file count (It should be ... instead of ...) ** Repairing Volume Missing directory record (id = ...) I'd like to know what is the cause of the above errors? Hopefully I will be more careful in the future to prevent them from happening again. p.s. I am using a SSD and so I assume mechanical hard disk error is less likely. Thanks!

• I have a mail server that hosts several client emails but 1 in particular is being blocked because of its SBRS score

  If I was hosting emails for 3 clients and my reverse DNS is mail.allclients.com and I am hosting for client2.com, client3.com etc. What would be the rDNS for client3.com? Would it reflect the rDNS of mail.allclients.com? If so, I do I prevent mails from client3.com from being blocked because the PTR does not match rDNS? Finally on your advice to have my email service publish an SPF record. Is this something I need to submit to the company I registered my mail.allclients.com to? So I for example registered with GoDaddy.com then I will need to submit a request to them to publish an SPF record on their DNS right? Thank you for your advice and kind assistance. Vince Saavedra

• Issue with www to non www redirect

  Hello, I am on slicehost and I followed the articles that they gave for DNS redirection and the www to non www url redirection does work. However, what if I want a www.domain.com to be the default domain. Would I put www.domain.com. as my DNS record name or would I keep domain.com. as my DNS record and then do something else. Basically, what happens is if someone goes to the url www.domain.com/directory/something.html they will be redirected to domain.com and not domain.com/directory/something.html I would like the second thing to happen, not just go to domain.com and call it a day. I am running nginx and am confounded on how to solve this issue. I'm not sure whether its an nginx issue or a dns issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Is it possible to use the MMM tool without virtual IP capability?

  We are on a host (Serverbeach) that does not support Virtual/floating IPs until you reserve at least a half-rack, which is just a little more than we are willing to spend per month right now. We do have 2 machines in one of their datacenters, and I am using these 2 machines right now in the Master-Master in Active-Passive Mode just like done by MMM -- http://mysql-mmm.org/. I have just set them up and I managing them manually, with manual switch on the Web frontend to tell it to connect to the correct (active) master. Is there any way to use MMM without virtual IPs? Any other comments on this setup?

• OpenWRT based gateway with dnsmasq and internal server with bind

  I have router based on OpenWRT which has dnsmasq 2.59. Inside my local area network I have a NS server bind. This server has internal and external views for a couple of my domains. My router forwards port 53 TCP and UDP from outside IP (router WAN) to this server. For the external clients everything works fine. In order to organize the internal view, I decided to add the exception to /etc/dnsmasq.conf server=/mydomain1.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain2.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain3.com/192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1 - IP address of the NS server) According to dnsmasq manstrong text: More specific domains take precendence over less specific domains, so: --server=/google.com/1.2.3.4 --server=/www.google.com/2.3.4.5 will send queries for *.google.com to 1.2.3.4, except *www.google.com, which will go to 2.3.4.5 this domain name with all the sub-domains is supposed to be forward to my NS server. • Database checksum features - redundant? useful?

  Just about every mainstream DB has a feature to calculate checksums per page, per sector, or per record. Now for a DB that does full recover after any crash, like PostgreSQL, is a checksum even useful? There will be no data loss as long as the xlog is ok, no matter what kind of corruption happened to the data itself, as the redo log is replayed every committed transaction will be restored. So checksums are useless on restore. Doesn't the filesystem or disk keep checksums anyway to detect corruption? So unless the checksum is per record, all it does is tell you there is corruption - which the OS should be yelling at you the minute you try to read it - so useless in operation? I can't imagine how a checksum can be helpful in any sane database - but since they all use them - I'd say that's just failure of imagination on my part. So how is it useful?

• SQL Server Management Studio Reports: Why no open transactions?

  On a server with several hundred user connections, when I open the SQL Server 2008 SP1 Management Studio report "Database - User Statistics", the result page shows the following results: Login Name: appUser Active Sessions: 243 Active Connections: 243 Open Transactions: 374 Still, when I open the report "Database - All Transactions" on the same DB, it doesn't show any connections ("Currently, there are no transactions running for [Database Name] Database"). What gives? Is this a bug in Management Studio? This is not the only report where this kind of behavious happens... Thanks all!

• Are there videocamera which geotag individual frames?

  I'm looking for a way to record live video with the specific requirement of having each frame georeferenced with GPS. Right now I'm using a normal video camera with a PDA+GPS that records the position, but it's difficult to sync both of these plus sometimes I've forgotten to turn the PDA+GPS or it has failed for some reason and all my video has been useless. Using google I found that about two years ago a company named Seero produced such video cameras and software, but apparently the domain doesn't exist any more and I only find references of other pages mentioning it. Does somebody know of any other product? I need to record this video in HD and have some way to export to Google Maps or other GIS software the positions of the frames in a way that I can click on the map and see what was being recorded in the video at that point. The precission of the GPS tracking is good enough as one position per second, intermediate frames of the video stream can be interpolated.

• How should I setup separate mx records for a subdomain?

  Lets say I have a domain that I run a web app on, for example cranketywidgets.com, and I'm using google apps for handle email for people work work on that domain, i.e. support@ cranketywidgets.com, [email protected], [email protected] and so on. Google's own mail services aren't always the best for sending automated reminder emails, comment notifications and so on, so the current solution I plan to pursue is to create a separate subdomain called mailer.cranketywidgets.com, run a mail server off it, and create a few accounts specifically for sending these kinds of emails. What should the mx records and a records look like here for this? I'm somewhat confused by the fact that mx records can be names, but that they must eventually resolve to an A record. What should the records look like here? cranketywidgets.com - A record to actual server like 10.24.233.214 cranketywidgets.com - mx records for google's email apps mailer.cranketywidgets.com - mx name pointing to server's ip address Would greatly appeciate some help on this - the answer seems like it'll be obvious, but email spam is a difficult problem to solve.

  I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am. • List of MD /Raid/LVM (Devices) = How to mount them without any further information available?

  Hello Expets, I do not have much skills in linux and installed a system two years ago that I now had to reboot, but it seems I did not automate everything with start-scripts... My Problem: I miss some mountpoints. I have a list of my raids (excerpt:) md3 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sda6[0] sdb6[1] 97659008 blocks [2/2] [UU] md4 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sda7[0] sdb7[1] 250099776 blocks [2/2] [UU] and it seems md3 and md4 are NOT mounted. However i do NOT have any entries for them fstab file. What should I do next. I do NOT know which filesystem they have (most likely ext3). =Can I savely try to mount them with (mount -t ext3 /dev/md3 /mnt/mymntpoint) or will the lead to corrupted data, in case they are not ext3? What should I do next (based on the information given above). The goal is to remount these Devices again, but I do not know anything about them anymore... Thank you very much Jens

• Disk Management Hidden Partitions - PTEDIT32

  Apparently PTEDIT32 can edit partitions, making partitions that are hidden, visible. My purpose is to take a hidden partition on a toshiba laptop (the recovery partition) and copy it as my hard drive is beginning to fail. My problem, is that I cannot find PTEDIT32 documentation on what i want to change the partition # to. I know that changing it from 27 to 7 would change it from hidden to active - but if I set it to active, I am worried it will try to launch the recovery mode (as that is what it did on a previous laptop) Here is the link I used for instructions to do this on a previous laptop: Hidden_Recovery_Link_Site So how to make the hidden partition visible without it actually RUNNING the recovery mode?

• How can I access the external microphone with Ubuntu?

  Sound in Ubuntu, it has its own special joy. I would like my external microphone to work. Symptoms: I can play sound through the speakers I can play sound through the headsets. Plugging and and plugging headphone output correctly switches. I can record from the built-in microphone, using "Sound Recorder" and others. but: I cannot record from the external microphone. My Sound Preferences/Input panel has no option for an external microphone. If the answer is upgrade the ALSA drivers, please say exactly what to type.   I have 2 Physical Servers with SQL Server 2008 R2. – SQL Server 1(Active) & SQL Server 2 (Passive) Web Application is developed using .Net 4.0 Framework. I want to know the best solution to have high availability and also have SSRS for reporting. Planned solution: Mirroring for Failover, and Transaction Replication for SSRS as the mirrored database can only be used for failover scenarios. SSRS will be on the Passive server, to reduce the load on the Active server. Let me know if the solution is correct. Also suggest alternate approaches.

• Clever recording using AVFoundation

  Hello I am working on my master thesis and I am programming app for iOS using AVFoundation framework. I can make by myself session and attach devices to it and record video with sound. The main problem is that I need continous recording (3hours or longer). After three hours user will stop recording and user will choose time eg. 15 mins (max 30 mins) and only this last 15 mins will be stored to iphone memory. Is it possible to 'cut' video while recording or should I record it eg. in 10 minutes block and then delete old video segments and last two segments connect to one bigger? Will perform these connections (stop recording, start new recording and then connect these two segments) lags in final long video segment? Is there any way to perform this 'clever' recording?   Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller and Windows XP workstations: Active Directory Users and Computers/Users/User/Properties/Environment/Client devices Connect client drives at logon Connect client printers at logon Shouldn't the above Terminal Services settings in Active Directory override the end user Remote Desktop client settings? In our environment the end user Remote Desktop Client settings take precedence. If printing is disabled on the client but enabled in the user's AD profile then printing is not available. Is this working by design or can I change something to allow the user environment settings in AD to override the end user settings RDC settings?

• Selecting primary Internet connection in Windows XP

  There is a computer that has access to the Internet both via the local network and by a GSM modem. As far as I know, when both connections are active, the modem connection is the primary one and all data is transmitted by the modem. Because of the fact that the slow modem connection is supposed to be used as a backup connection, I want Windows to use it only when the connection via LAN is unavailable. At the same time I want the GSM modem connection to be active constantly. Is it possible to make Windows not use modem connection when there is a working LAN Internet connection? • DNS name not on cert

  I've got an interesting one... My users have always typed in 'mail' to get to their mail. There was an internal DNS A record that resolved that to the IP of the mail server. I'm putting in an Exchange server to replace that. In order for people to get their mail, I try putting in an A record that does the same thing as the previous one. When I try to get to OWA, it tells me that the certificate on the server is not trusted. I only have the names: mail.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.internal mydomain.internal mailserver.mydomain.internal so when the browser sees that this cert is trying to cover https://mail/owa it says the cert's not trusted. What amy I supposed to do about that?

• Suggestion for boot manager in external hard disk

  Hi, I just bought an 1TB External Hard drive with eSATA, USB, FW400/800 (LaCie if you are interested). I already put the windows 7 installation in a FAT32 active partition so i can plug the HDD via USB, since my notebook or other computers doesn't support boot via eSATA commonly, and it works. Now i want to do more partitions so i'm looking for a way to have a boot manager as active partitions that allows me to boot from different partitions in my HDD (win7, ubuntu installations for example) I want to know if you know any software to do this or you already have this system. • SPF include: too many IP addresses

  I've hit a snag with SPF. The SPF record for my domain will contain four or five entries, plus it will contain: include:sgizmo.com The SPF record for sgizmo.com contains eleven entries! This, plus mine, is way over the maximum ten allowed by the RFC (and probably by most servers). I realize that there has to be a limit in order to prevent DoS attacks. However, in the real world, it is probably not unreasonable for large companies to have many server addresses. Furthermore, must I know monitor my 'include:' counterparts for changes and additions? Must I check weekly, daily, to insure that some combination of changes doesn't suddenly put me over the top? It doesn't seem to me that SPF is suitable for prime time. Is there another way to do this?
