  I'm writing a bash script which I'm testing on OS X though it will ultimately run on a standard Linux environment and running into a weird error. I have tests like this in my script: if [ ! -w $BP ]; then echo "'$1' not writable" exit 1 fi Which seems pretty sane to me and works fine under Linux but when trying to test on OS X I get the following error message: startSvr.sh: line 135: [: missing `]' startSvr.sh: line 135: -w: command not found So is this a case of OS X not supporting the -w test or is there some other reason this isn't working for me? e.g. environment

• Where does a Quick-Time powered application store changes to the user interface?

  I have downloaded an application written with the Quick Time library (for Windows 7). The application does not need an installation: just unzip it in a directory and run the program. It works, but I have a problem: the program allows the user to change a lot of values using its interface but does not have an option to reset them to their default values. What is more problematic is that when I exit the program and run it again, the interface still has the changed values. In the program directory there is no file that stores the changes done to the UI of the program. I suspect that Quick Time records these changes somewhere, but I can't find the right file. I have even deleted the application and re-unzipped it to another location - but the UI values still remain the same values changed by me!

  I am trying to start/stop jboss remotely with ruby Net::SSH library.   I'm supporting an old vb.net program whose database it connected to was moved from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. Is there a setting on SQL Server 2008 which will allow ODBC connections to access the database but not allow VB.NET to connect to it programmatically? the error i keep receiving in the app is: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server) however I can connect to it when I create a system dsn to the sql server instance and through VS2005's Tools Connect to Database.   Should I always release self when there is a failure inside init, or should I only do so if I have initialized instance variables first? To put it another way, is this pattern valid? • Converting OCaml to F#: F# equivelent of Pervasives at_exit

  I am converting the OCaml Format module to F# and tracked a problem back to a use of the OCaml Pervasives at_exit. val at_exit : (unit -> unit) -> unit Register the given function to be called at program termination time. The functions registered with at_exit will be called when the program executes exit, or terminates, either normally or because of an uncaught exception. The functions are called in "last in, first out" order: the function most recently added with at_exit is called first. In the process of conversion I commented out the line as the compiler did not flag it as being needed and I was not expecting an event in the code. I checked the FSharp.PowerPack.Compatibility.PervasivesModule for at_exit using VS Object Browser and found none. I did find how to run code "at_exit"? and How do I write an exit handler for an F# application? The OCaml line is at_exit print_flush with print_flush signature: val print_flush : (unit -> unit) Also in looking at the use of it during a debug session of the OCaml code, it looks like at_exit is called both at the end of initialization and at the end of each use of a call to the module. Any suggestions, hints on how to do this. This will be my first event in F#. EDIT Here is some of what I have learned about the Format module that should shed some light on the problem. The Format module is a library of functions for basic pretty printer commands of simple OCaml values such as int, bool, string. The format module has commands like print_string, but also some commands to say put the next line in a bounded box, think new set of left and right margins. So one could write: print_string "Hello" or open_box 0; print_string "<<"; open_box 0; print_string "p \/ q ==> r"; close_box(); print_string ">>"; close_box() The commands such as open_box and print_string are handled by a loop that interprets the commands and then decides wither to print on the current line or advance to the next line. The commands are held in a queue and there is a state record to hold mutable values such as left and right margin. The queue and state needs to be primed, which from debugging the test cases against working OCaml code appears to be done at the end of initialization of the module but before the first call is made to any function in the Format module. The queue and state is cleaned up and primed again for the next set of commands by the use of mechanisms for at_exit that recognize that the last matching frame for the initial call to the format modules has been removed thus triggering the call to at_exit which pushes out any remaining command in the queue and re-initializes the queue and state. So the sequencing of the calls to print_flush is critical and appears to be at more than what the OCaml documentation states.

  A group of us (.NET developers) are talking unit testing. Not any one framework (we've hit on MSpec, NUint, MSTest, RhinoMocks, TypeMock, etc) -- we're just talking generally. We see lots of syntax that forces a distinct unit test per scenario, but we don't see an avenue to re-using one unit test with various inputs or scenarios. Also, we don't see an avenue to multiple asserts in a given test without an early assert's failure threatening the testing of later asserts (in the same test). Is there anything like that happening in .NET unit testing (state- or behavior-based) today?

  I'm using $.post to send a query to a JSP which returns some awesome data for me. If you have already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired. You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit this session. It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level of 15 using the following command. username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword> Replace and with the username and password you want to use. It appears every time I login and everytime I show run. I already set up my username. How do I turn it off?

• Preprocess outgoing email bodies with a linux smtp server/proxy?

  I have an smtp server running locally on my server, and need to edit the contents of email bodies before they actually get sent out. I have tried using EmailRelay to proxy my smtp server with the --filter option to specify a filter/editing executable, but am getting some odd behavior. Currently, I specify an executable shell script as the filter program and all it is supposed to do is append some text to a log file and return 0 so I know it actually got called. The weird thing is the email gets sent but nothing shows up in my log file like it should (but it does when I run the script manualy). If I remove the 'exit 0' statement, the email does not send like I would expect. Are there any other options/suggestions?

I identified the line that was crashing. • Emacs: Prevent TRAMP connection closing

  I'm using emacs with TRAMP ( C-x C-f /ftp:[email protected]:/ ), and randomly, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes, ~12 seconds (no exaggerating) my connection will close (I think). I'll try to type, or list a dir, and it will say "Opening FTP connection to site.com...". Is there a way to tell it to just keep the connection open until I exit? Or is it the webserver killing the connection? I'm just using standard FTP. Thanks.

• Unix Shell/SSH config to allow TCP port forwarding without showing a command prompt

  I'm running a Debian Linux. I'd like to have a user account that is able to connect via SSH for TCP-forwarding only, without a command prompt. e.g the following would work (from a remote computer): ssh -D1234 user@myhost but no command prompt would appear. Using a shell like /bin/false or /sbin/nologin is too restrictive as it doesn't even allow the user to log in. A shell that only allows the "exit" or Ctrl+D commands would do the job. I know that something similar is possible to allow only SFTP, but I can't find the equivalent for TCP forwarding. Thanks

• Problem with loading compiled c code in R x64 using dyn.load

  I recently went from a 32bit laptop to a 64bit desktop (both win7). I just found out that I get an error now when loading dll's using dyn.load. I guess this is a simple mistake and I am overlooking something.   Hi, on a Windows 2008 R2 server I have two small .cmd-scripts to start/stop a certain service. They look like this net start MyService and net stop MyService I want to execute these script via scheduled task, and I thought it would be best to create a local user for this job. The user is not member of the Administrators group. But the scripts fail with exit code 2. When I logon with this local user and try to execute these script in command line, I see a message like (maybe not exactly translated from german to english): Error code 5: Access denied It doesn't matter whether I start the command line as Administrator or not. How can this local user gain rights to do the job?

• Skype prevents computer from idling?

  When using Skype, it prevents the computer from idling, going into sleep mode and turning the monitor off. I notice on my laptop if I use a tool like Monitor Off to manually turn my monitor off, after about a minute, the monitor will come back on as if Skype has pressed a key or moved my mouse to exit out of that idle state. This also prevents other programs (such as Pidgin) from going idle as well, so it looks like I'm online 24/7... even though it should be going idle after 5 minutes of inactivity. Is there a way to circumvent this behavior in Skype?

• Difficulty analyzing text from a file

  I'm running into a rather amusing error with my output on this lab and I was wondering if any of you might be able to hint at where my problem lies. The goal is find the high, low, average, sum of the record, and output original record. I started with a rather basic program to solve for one record and when I achieved this I expanded the program to work with the entire text file. Initially the program would correctly output: 346 130 982 90 656 117 595 High# Low# Sum# Average# When I expanded it to work for the entire record my output stopped working how I had wanted it to. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 High: 0 Low: 0 Sum: 0 Average: 0 etc... I cant quite figure out why my ifstream just completely stopped bothering to input the values from file. I'll go take a walk and take another crack at it.   ok, here i have some weird question: let say we have some binary file (.log), and sequence of write operations, for example log1, log2, log3 and each has some block size n (raw data). question: can I be sure that log1,log2 and log3 sequences can be written in the correct order in ONE file, even if i have few cache levels (disk hardware and os level)? update very interested in what will be with records order (not with records) if we have software or hardware failure (reboot or another reason). update there can be some percent of write failures, but main question is: will write order stay correct?

• Deleting inline model in Django admin

  I am trying to use Django admin to remove an inline model. I get an error saying [u'Select a valid choice. That choice is not one of the available choices.'] I check the location where the exception is raised. It seems like the inline model was removed, then a form validation happened on the parent model with the deleted inline model still as value of the form. That caused the failure. In my admin model, I had a save_formset method defined, that called formset.save(commit=False). Is the commit=False not telling Django to not delete the related models? Thanks.

• Windows keeps switching to accented characters

  I am accidentally hitting a key combination that turns accenting on in an application. For example, the / key is being rendered as é and I don't know how to turn it off. It's on a per application basis and if I exit the application and re-enter then it will go back to normal. Right now it's happened to Chrome and I have dozens of tabs open and I don't want to close it. I found this answer but hitting RCtrl + RShift doesn't work. This is for Windows 7.

Therefore I need the last made change in the field so that only latest change can be selected in the select queries i have used... please go through the code.. and see how can i make the required change i need finally..
