• how to develop domain specific language on top of another language ?

  say i found a good open source software/library written in python. i want to wrap some of the functions or methods that i have created into easy to understand language of my own. do porter_stemm(DOC) (the DSL) would be equivalent to the function or series of methods written in python. i want to create a DSL that is easy to learn, but need this DSL translated into the original open source software software. im not sure if i am clear here but my intention is: create an easy to learn code language that users can use to solve a problem in a certain niche. this simple language needs to be translated or compiled or interpretated via some middleware into the original open source software's language (python).

• MS SQL Server 2008 Stored Procedure Result as Column Default Value

  First of all, thank you guys. You always know how to direct me when I cant even find the words to explain what the heck im trying to do. The default values of the columns on a couple of my tables need to equal the result of some complicated calculations on other columns in other tables. My first thought is to simply have the column default value equal the result of a stored procedure. I would also have one or more of the parameters pulled from the columns in the calling table. I don't know the syntax of how to do it though, and any time the word "stored" and "procedure" land next to each other in google I'm flooded with info on Parameter default values and nothing relating to what I actually want. Half of that was more of a vent than a question...any ideas though? And plz plz dont say "Well, you could use an On-Insert Trigger to..."

• Retrieving datatypes from underlying database

  Hi, Im making an application that displays information about an underlying database. The database can be anything, but is typically either Oracle, MSSQL or MySQL. I am trying to extract the datatype but cannot seem to get this right. I have a DbConnection because i dont know whether I need a OleDbConnection or an OdbcConnection. On this connection I make a GetSchema("Columns", "mytablename") query and gets the result back. It seems though that there are some inconsistencies with my datatypes or the query returns different datatypes for the different databases. For instance, in my MSSQL database I query and get an integer back (which seems to be the OleDbType) which I map to a datatype. My varchars is now of type char - no length - and this confuses me a bit. I guess my main question is something like: Is there any way of making a uniform way of extracting datatypes across providers and having an "accurate" representation of the datatype?

  Hi, Im trying to host my wcf service to IIS. However when I click Basic Settings and Click Test Settings, it has an error. The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read access to the physical path. If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool identity is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that \$ has Read access to the physical path. Then test these settings again. The version of my IIS is 7.5.7600.16385 and my OS is Windows 7

• search engine (solr/sphinx) question

  i want to make my threads content searchable with full text search engines like solr. but i wonder one thing. should i index just the thread.title, thread.body and post.body or should i index username, created date, nr of posts, views, country, region and city too that belongs to thread? i mean when an user search for a thread he will get hits returned containing thread title, 2 lines of body, which user has posted it, creation date, tags, and so on. should i index all this information too? but then it would be pretty much the whole database. or should i just index the 3 first columns i mentioned for full text search. and another question. when an user post a new thread, then i have to immidiately tell solr to add that row? if im not, how would it be searchable?

• Urban Airship - not receving push notifications on device?

  Hey guys just installed everything to my app tried to push but no messages appear the token for my device is saved so thats working, when i push the website says it sent but no message on device. Right now im using production certificate for push notification with a developer pervision and not the distrubution certificate. I tried cleaning the build and reinstalling but no luck since an extra app was installed from the same one. I used the code that is on the sample file tutorial i think thats all the detail dont know what to do next.

  If you are familiar with TopCoder you know that your source-code gets a final "grade/points" this depends on time, how many compiles, etc, one of the highest weighted being performance. But how can they test that, is there some sort of simple code (java or c++) to do it that you could share for me to evaluate and hopefully write my own to test the programs I write for University? This is sort of a follow up question to this one where I ask if shorter code results in best performance.   What does it mean to BUILD a solution/project/program? I want to make sure I have my definitions correct (so I don't sound like a idiot when conversing). In IDE's, you can (correct me if I'm wrong) compile source-code/programming-code into computer-readable machine code. You can debug a program, which is basically stepping through the program and looking for errors. But what exactly doe's building a program do? In VS im aware that when you build a program it produces a executable file in a debug folder. Any hard-core tech definitions of what it means to BUILD a program?

• What tools do you use when generating markup from mockups?

  So I endeavor to spend most of time on the app server side of things but time to time I need to get my hands dirty and generate markup/css/js from a wireframe or mockup. As far as tools go, Ive found browsershots and Litmus app helpful and of course, vm's as well for checking things out live in ie-{6,7,8}. Otherwise I do the heavy lifting in vim. For generating new markup thats not tied to a target design I think some of the css frameworks & tools like sass look useful but Im skeptical of their utility when needing to generate markup to match a photoshop design. So what tips / tools do you keep in your markup generating utility belt when building solid markup from designs? My list so far: Browsershots Browserlab.adobe.com Haml / Less / Sass (not used but will probably explore)

  Hello, Im using Firefox 3.5.9. When i visit a url , it sets a cookie on my computer.I can see this cookie in Firefox by going to Tools-Options-Privacy,then clicking on 'Remove Individual Cookies'. There is a folder called xyz,which contains a cookie named JSessionId and which has some Content value . If i use curl in my php code to navigate to that website,is there a way i can read the Content value of that cookie programmatically ? . Some sample code would be really appreciated. Thank You

  Using vs2008, winforms C#. Im using the crystal reports version that comes with vs2008. I can create and load a crystal report ok. But becasue it can take a few minutes to load, i want to bring up a wait cursor, but am having trouble with that. I have tried setting the this.crystalReportViewer1.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor; and tried the parent form this.cursor = cursors.waitcursor; The cursor changes briefly to wait mode, then changes back before the report has finished loading. How can i best set the wait cursor before the report starts to load, force it to stay in wait mode then change it back to the arrow, only after the report has finished loading thanks for any advice

  What im trying to do: Fetch X numbers of RSS Feeds from my Blogs and echo only new entries. My Problem is, how to know wich items are already parsed? Solution so far: Fetch the Feed every 5 hours, store all titles inside an Database table or flat file. Next run check if the title is already in database if not print it and save it inside the database. But iam not sure if this is best practise to do this? If someone knows a fast way, it would be great. Sorry for my poor english.

• Python - Using "Google AJAX Search" API's Local Search Objects

  Hi! I've just started using Google's search API to find addresses and the distances between those addresses. I used geopy for this, but, I often had the problem of not getting the correct addresses for my queries. I decided to experiment, therefore, with Google's "Local Search" (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/local.html). Anyway, I wanted to ask if I could use the "Local Search" objects provided by the API within python. Something tells me that I can't and that I have to use json. Does anyone know if there is a work around? PS: Im trying to make something like this: http://www.google.com/uds/samples/random/lead.html ... except a matrix type deal where the insides will be filled with distances between the addresses.   Hi there, I would like to know some opinions from experienced developers on what they think the definitive way to size fonts (in a base sense). I know that working with ems is considered best but im referring to the best way to set the base font size. There is the technique of setting font to 10px using 62.5 method but i think ie has an issue with rounding which throws this out slightly (perhaps not) YUI framework uses body { font:13px/1.231 arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif; /* for IE6/7 */ *font-size:small; /* for IE Quirks Mode */ *font:x-small; } which really confuses me! Tripoli uses html { font-size:125%; } body { font-size:50%; } a list apart suggest something along the lines of : body { font-size: 16px; *font-size: 100%; } So which is the best either out of these methods or any alternatives. The best being the easiest to work with and the most reliable cross browser.

  Hi, I am trying to output a range of commands with different dates and numbers associated. for each hour eg. Output im trying to do in a loop is: shell.sh filename<number e.g. between 1-24> <date e.g. 20100928> <number e.g. between 1-24> <id> So basically the the above will generate an output done 24 times for each particular day with a unique 4 digit id. I was thinking of having a nested loop, as the batch number needs to be unique. can anyone help?

  I have a datatable that contains the rows of a database table. This table has a primary key formed by 2 columns. The components are assigned this way: datatable - bindingsource - datagridview. What I want is to search a specific row (based on the primary key) to select it on the grid. I cant use the bindingsource.Find method because you only can use one column. I have access to the datatable, so I do manually search on the datatable, but how can I get bindingsource row position based on the datatable row? Or there is another way to solve this? • Selenium Test Results are empty

  I've Jenkins and selenium configured to run tests after the app is build, everything is ok till the moment that selenium tests should run, actually the selenium test suite starts correctly and then it stops after the first test and does not go forward. I'm using VNC to watch what is happening. The logs produces by selenium are empty. • Where can I learn about security and online privacy?

  I'd really like to start including shopping cart functionality in my projects. At first im content relying on paypal links, but I really want to be learning about specific security threats and how to combat them. Eventually I want to feel comfortable receiving and sending customer credit card details for ecommerce. Obviously this is a common thing on the net but most tutorials and resources are content to say "it's every web developers responsibility to consider security, but we're not going to cover that here/today/ever." so, my question is, where is a good place to learn? And once I've learned, how do I stay abreast of new vulnerabilities as the web evolves?
