• Suggest books/learning path for writing smartphone apps

  I have been writing a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript lately working on a website, and I would like to move on to 'proper' OOP with an eye to making smartphone apps. I would like to at least cover iPhone and BlackBerry, which means learning Objective C, Cocoa and Java, before learning the specifics of interacting with the devices themselves, such as native bluetooth/GPS/internet API/methods. I would appreciate pointers to books or resources that will get me from a procedural web developer to object oriented app-maker. Most of the reviews of books on Objective C and Java have been mixed. I am about to start working my way through Beginning Java Objects (APress) which I have borrowed from my brother, so even if it's not a good intro at least it was free!

• Fake "user initiated" <audio> tag on iPad

  I know that Apple's docs say that an mp3 within an <audio tag on iPhone OS can't be played without user intervention (they cite bandwidth concerns, totally reasonable). However, has anyone succeeded in faking a user action to play the audio? Perhaps faking events to off screen native audio controls with JavaScript? I'm using jPlayer right now which works great on desktop Safari, but is silent on my iPad. I'm prototyping a touch interface using WebKit on the iPad, and audio is an integral part of the experience, so yes, I do have a good reason to want to override this convention. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

• Why does my JButton look differently of different computers?

  I use JButtons in my application. They need to have different colors. First I used that btn.setBackground(col);. It works on my computer and on another computer my button just gray (not red, as it's supposed to be). Trying to solve this problem I decided to use images. I do it in the following way: tmp = new JButton(newIcon); Again, it works fine on my computer and on another computer I see just gray buttons. Does anybody have any ideas what can be the reason of the problem and how it can be solved? I heard it can be related to "look-and-feel of the native system". But I do not know what it means and what should I do if it is the case? Can anybody pleas, help me with that?

EDIT: I can understand binary search in general. I just can not understand how to apply binary search in this special case. How to decide the missing number is in or not in some range so that we can choose another. English is not my native language, that is one reason I can not understand the author well. • start .net application from start menu search

  bla.exe (application alias) points to a .net application called wpfapp1.exe. When i add a key&value to eg. this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\bla.exe and then start application using Run - bla.exe it starts however when i start application using windows search i get an "windows cannot find wpfapp1.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I have successfully identified problem: this error only occurs to .net applications while native one start normally (eg. firefox.exe). So is there any .net config that i've missed during development?

  I need to do a binomial test in Python that allows calculation for 'n' numbers of the order of 10000. I have implemented a quick binomial_test function using scipy.misc.comb, however, it is pretty much limited around n = 1000, I guess because it reaches the biggest representable number while computing factorials or the combinatorial itself. • PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists is very slow if category doesn't exists

  I have kind of library which uses a bunch of its own perf counters. But I want my library works fine even if that perf counters weren't installed. So I've created wrappers aroung PerformanceCounter and on the first use check if PerfCounter exists or not. If they exists then I'm using native PerformanceCounter instead I'm using a wrapper which do nothing. So to check perf counter existence I use PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists The problem is that if there isn't such category then PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists call takes (on my machine) about 10 seconds! Needless to say it's too slow. What can I do?   The UIPerfomance plugin is an easy way to speed up your web pages by applying some of the best practices rules from Yahoo performance team (like minifying, setting a far-future expires header, versioned images...) Unfortunately I didn't find a way to store the static resources in a location outside of the webapplication which has his own advantages ( smaller WAR sizes, better optimize cookieless server, static resources served faster by a highly optimized native httpd, no need to redeploy WAR when updating static resources..). So my question is: is it possible to use this great plugin with static resoures stored outside the web application? And if yes, how?

  In Clojure, if I want to start a test cluster using the hbase testing utility, I have to annotate my dependencies with: [org.apache.hbase/hbase "0.92.2" :classifier "tests" :scope "test"] First of all, I have no idea what this means. According to leiningens sample project.clj ;; Dependencies are listed as [group-id/name version]; in addition ;; to keywords supported by Pomegranate, you can use :native-prefix ;; to specify a prefix. This prefix is used to extract natives in ;; jars that don't adhere to the default "<os>/<arch>/" layout that ;; Leiningen expects. Question 1: What does that mean? Question 2: If I upgrade the version: [org.apache.hbase/hbase "0.94.6.1" :classifier "tests" :scope "test"] Then I receive a ClassNotFoundException Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.hadoop.hbase.HBaseConfiguration Whats going on here and how do I fix it?

  I have a couple of questions about connectivity on Android, if anyone has any insight it would be great. What is the default when an application wants to wirelessly connect? Is it wlan? And if wlan is switched off or there is no access points around is it 3g or gprs? Is a device always ip connected? Or when its disabled from wlan or 3g does it lose its ip address? Is an application, for example the browser only ever connected to one ip address? Or can it be connected to multiple addresses for each radio such as gprs or wifi (wlan)? Can an application decide which connection to open a socket to? For example can I create an application and decide whether to connect the socket to the wlan or gprs? Or does the OS decide? Finally how do native applications handle connectivity? In the same manner?

• Converting a JSP to a SharePoint webpart

  We have a large number of Java based servlets/portlets running in a BEA portal that we want to convert into SharePoint 2007 webparts. Many of the portlets use user preferences but the implementations are split between preferences being handled by the portlet directly and stored in a separate database from the portal. Others are using the BEA WebLogic API for user preferences. Three questions: Has anyone gotten a Java Servlet/JSP (compiled against JRE 1.4.2 and running on Tomcat 4.1) to run as a SharePoint 2007 webpart? How large of an effort was it in general (as in, was it measured in days/weeks/months)? Would it be easier to rewrite the portlet as native webparts at least as far as user preferences are concerned?

• How do I wrap a selection with an HTML tag in Visual Studio?

  This seems like the most basic question in the world, but damned if I can find an answer. Is there a keyboard shortcut, either native to Visual Studio or through Code Rush or other third-party plug-in, to wrap the current selection with an HTML tag? I'm tired of typing the opening tag, cutting the misplaced closing tag to the clipboard, moving the cursor, and pasting it at the end where it belongs. Update: This is how TextMate handles surrounding a selection with a tag. Frankly, I'm stunned that Visual Studio doesn't seem to have a similar feature. Creating a macro or snippet for every conceivable tag I might want to use seems absurd.

• How can I programmatically find the IP address/netmask/gateway configured for a specific network dev

  Hi I would like to write a piece of code which checks, for each network device (e.g. eth0, lo, master devices) some statistics and configuration data about that device. I could find the statistics data (and most of the configuration data) in /sys/class/net/..., however, I couldn't find any C/C++ API or any entry in procfs/sysfs listing the inet addr, netmask and gateway. Some alternatives I checked: parsing the output from ifconfig/route/some other utilities: I don't want to start a subprocess every time I need to do the inspection. parsing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: will give me only the start-up configuration, and not the current state. Also, since this code is intended for a product in my workplace, where every external library is inspected thoroughly (meaning it will take me forever to add any external library) I prefer solutions which rely on Linux native API and not external libraries. • LNK2001: What have I forgotton to set?

  Following on from my previous question regarding debugging of native code, I decided to create a simple test from a console app as I wasn't getting anywhere with debugging the service directly. So I created a vc6 console app, added the dll project to the workspace and ran it. Instead of executing as expected it spat out the following linker errors: main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "int __stdcall hmDocumentLAdd(char *,char *,long,char *,char *,long,long,long,long *)" (?hmDocumentLAdd@@YGHPAD0J00JJJPAJ@Z) main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "int __stdcall hmGetDocBasePath(char *,long)" (?hmGetDocBasePath@@YGHPADJ@Z) Debug/HazManTest.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 2 unresolved externals This seems to be a simple case of forgetting something in the linker options: However everything seems to be normal, and the lib file, dll and source is available. If I change the lib file to load to nonsense it kicks up the fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file "asdf.lib", so that isn't a problem. I have previously linked to dll and they have just worked, so what I have forgotton to do?

• How do I send a PDF in a MemoryStream to the printer in .Net?

  I have a PDF created in memory using iTextSharp and contained in a MemoryStream. I now need to translate that MemoryStream PDF into something the printer understands. I've used Report Server in the past to render the pages to the printer format but I cant use it for this project. Is there a native .Net way of doing this? For example, GhostScript would be OK if it was a .Net assembly but I don't want to bundle any non .Net stuff along with my installer. The PrintDocument class in .Net is great for sending content to the printer but I still need to translate it from a PDF stream into GDI at the page level. Any good hints? Thanks in advance Ryan

  I'm trying to match a specific string out of a an HTML document and have this regex pattern to grab it: Pattern somePattern = Pattern.compile("var json = ({\"r\":\"^d1\".*});"); However when I try to hit that code at runtime, I get this error: FATAL EXCEPTION: Timer-0 java.util.regex.PatternSyntaxException: Syntax error U_REGEX_RULE_SYNTAX near index 13: var json = ({"r":"^d1".*}); ^ at com.ibm.icu4jni.regex.NativeRegEx.open(Native Method) at java.util.regex.Pattern.compileImpl(Pattern.java:383) at java.util.regex.Pattern.<init>(Pattern.java:341) at java.util.regex.Pattern.compile(Pattern.java:317) Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

  Hi I have a web application running in cluster mode with a load balancer. It consists in two tomcats (T1, and T2) addressing only one DB. T2 is nfs mounted to T1. This is the only dofference between both nodes. I have a java method generating some files. If the request runs on T1 there is no problem but if the request is running on node 2 I get an exception as follows: java.io.IOException: Invalid argument at java.io.FileOutputStream.close0(Native Method) at java.io.FileOutputStream.close(FileOutputStream.java:279) The corresponding code is as follows: for (int i = 0; i < dataFileList.size(); i++) { outputFileName = outputFolder + fileNameList.get(i); FileOutputStream fileOut = new FileOutputStream(outputFileName); fileOut.write(dataFileList.get(i), 0, dataFileList.get(i).length); fileOut.flush(); fileOut.close(); } The exception appears at the fileOut.close() Any hint?
