Internet Explorer 6 Encountered An Error ntl.dll Issue on XP and Win2000

As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.

Connection drops while transferring large files to one server on a network

My company has two sites, each with their own LAN, using site to site VPN tunnel to connect the two sites. When transferring files (especially larger files) from site1 to site2 server1, the file transfer fails. I don't think this can be a VPN issue because transferring the same files to site2 server2 which is on the same network as server1 works fine. Pings to server1 and server2 at site2 from site1 are about the same, mostly 19/20ms with the odd one up to 50ms. As server1 is DB server with a high load I thought the NIC maybe overloaded, but a transfer from site2 server1 to site2 server2 works fine, and that uses the same NIC on server1 as transfers from site1 to site2 server1. The servers are both Windows Server 2003 VMs with VMXNET 3 NICs. Why isn't "(ulimit -d 1000; firefox) &" working?

I'm trying to limit the memory usage of firefox to prevent it from stalling the whole system with problematic web sites. I tried, in bash: (ulimit -d 1000; firefox) & This should limit the memory usage to 1000kB. Then I opened YouTube, and noticed, in top, that firefox is using 2.6% of the memory, or about 200MB, and not crashing. Clearly the limit is being ignored. Why is that, and how can I enforce it correctly?

serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server. Can be a real pain when a new employee starts and they have to send details to everyone else and vice versa. Experience with HAVP

I have employees that have to search sketchy virus-ridden websites as part of their job. They all have XP and Symantec AV installed but they still get hit fairly often. Rather then trying all sorts of desktop level solutions, I was thinking about maybe some sort of Proxy in addition to symantec for when they browse these sites? Anyone have experience with HAVP? Am I going about this the wrong way? If this is the right way, and free alternatives to HAVP?

I am trying to start a new installation of tomcat7 (on arch Linux). I have everything configured how I normally would but I am running into the problem described in the title. This means that tomcat starts but nothing in that host gets deployed. Proper 16:9 video size for non-HD 4:3 video (for youtube/vimeo)

Since High Definition video came out on all the online sites it has changed the default aspect ratio of the player from 4:3 to 16:9. This means that for people posting SD video you have to resize some of your videos to get them to fit right. For example, NTSC DVD quality (aka 480i/p) is 720x480 pixels (width x height). However, low-end High Definition (720i/p) is 1280x720. Anyway, now that the video players are built for HD you will find that uploading standard quality videos will result in videos that are "letter boxed" which means they have extra black bars on the top and bottom (or sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to get a 720x480 video to fit a box that is designed for HD the best practice would be to crop some of it off so that it fits as 720x404 since: 16/9 = 1.78 (1.7777777777778) 720/405 = 1.78 405x1.78 = 720.9 The same would stand for 640x480 (old TV quality) video that would need to be 640x360 correct? I'm asking because I'm not sure about all this and whether this is the proper way to fix these letter-boxing/display problems.

Traceroutes to every site includes nameintelligence.com

I used domaintools.com to do a traceroute on a bunch of sites, and noticed that every single one leads to this "nameintelligence.com" site that I have never heard of. Absolutely every site, including this one, google, my own site, yahoo, microsoft.com, stackoverflow, EVERYTHING, has nameintelligence.com in the first position. What is that site, and what do they do? They're a PR 4 apparently, yet I have never heard of them. I think this would be the right place to ask, I am sorry if I am wrong. .htaccess has no effect

I am loosing hours with this (should-be) simple task. I want to restrict access to my website, which is on my server in /var/www/. I've created /etc/apache2/passwords file with httpasswd successfuly (user primoz). I've put .htaccess in /var/www/ and this is the content: AuthType Basic AuthName "RestrictedFiles" AuthBasicProvider file AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/passwords Require user primoz My website is still accessible. I also tried editing the /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default - line AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All. No need to mention that it didn't make any changes. Should restricting really be this frustrating? EDIT: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf is empty by default because I run server on Debian - which uses apache2.conf instead. Here is the whole apache2.conf.

Ngingx won't start with fastcgi_split_path_info" error

I heard that nginx is faster and since I'm on a VPS with low RAM I thought I would try it out. I got through this tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-php-5.3-nginx-and-php-fpm-on-ubuntu-debian But I now get the following error: unknown directive "fastcgi_split_path_info" in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default:28 What might be causing the problem? I can't find any reference to the problem on Google. Also I have heard conflicting things about nginx vs Apache. Some say use one, some say the other. I'm using all sorts of things such as rewrite rules, proxies etc. Am I setting myself up for a fall by using nginx? If I go for Apache: how can I tweak it so that it performs better on a low RAM VPS?

Hello, I was wondering if someone has observations (or specifications) of different mobile processors power consumption levels when idle? Let's define 'idle' with 'browsing web sites trough wifi, no flash, no multitasking'. There are different series processors, recognizable by their first letter. The letter tells about the maximum TDP. For example: T - 30-39W P - max 25W L - 12-19W U - <12W source However this is about maximum consumptions during load. Is there any difference in power levels when the CPU is idling?

Ubuntu, apache2 wildcard dns to subdomain

Currently I'm hosting my own (ubuntu) server with the following services: samba, ftp and a webserver. I've bought a domain and linked the DNS A-record to my ISP's IP. This is working correctly. Now I'd like to use the DNS wildcard-record to create subdomains. I want to avoid waiting 24hrs before the DNS change completes. Thusfar I'm only able to redirect all incoming wildcards to the same directory: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www Although I'd like to get: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test1 test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test2 My guess would be to change the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain. Firefox's master password does not protect my web accounts

I've set up a master password in Firefox 3.6 but it's not working as I expected. I always save my passwords within Firefox for frequently visited sites like Facebook, Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Twitter etc. and this way I don't have to type in my password every time I open that site. When I open Firefox, it asks for the master password but when I click Cancel, it opens normally, and lets me directly in my Facebook page, or Yahoo! Mail page. Why doesn't it protect my accounts? This way, anyone using my computer can see my accounts and it's totally pointless for me to use this master password. How can I protect my accounts with saved passwords in Firefox?

Drupal + Zen - not proper layout/no graphics

Hello, I installed Drupal (both using Fantastico, then started over from scratch) and Drupal works great except when I setup the Zen theme (following the instructions on the website and in the readme-first.txt) the theme does not show up properly. it has no graphics except for the tiny drupal logo way at the bottom. the rest is text. I have uploaded the theme to the /public_html/sites/all/themes folder and it does show up in themes in the administer section so I select enable and default. permissions on this folder are 755. any ideas? I checked the Drupal forums and someone is having the same problem but no one replied (this was in April) so I figured I would have a better shot on this awesome website. thanks. Luma

Webkit based browsers on Mac refuse to load certain websites or resources, other browsers work fine from the same machine

OK, this one has really been puzzling me. Certain websites (such as instapaper.com ) or certain resources (such as the CSS and images for icanhazcheezeburger.com sites) refuse to load at all in Safari or Chrome on any of my Mac machines. Rebooting the machine doesn't fix it. If I use another browser, such as Firefox or a browser on my iPhone or in my Windows virtual machine, the pages load just fine. When the whole page errors out, Safari displays an error: "WebKit encountered an internal error" WebKitErrorDomain:300 This is all from within my home network. Any ideas what could possibly be causing such bizarre behavior?

IIS in VirtualBox serving files from shared Ubuntu folder

Here's the problem: I want to use Ubuntu. But I need to develop ASP.NET (MVC) sites. So I setup VirtualBox with Win2003 and IIS6. But I would prefer my working files to be located in my Ubuntu home folder. So I setup shared folder in VirtualBox and make IIS6 virtual directory work from there. The problem is, IIS6 can't do this. Whatever I try (mapped drive, network uri path) I get different IIS errors: can't access folder (for mapped drive), can't monitor file system changes (\vboxsvr share path), and so on. Is there a way for IIS6 in virtual machine to configure virtual application folder to be on host machine (Ubuntu) - be it shared folder, mapped drive, smb share, or whatever?

How to install anti-virus without administrative rights?

In situations where the PC has no CD drive and operating a guest account with limited privileges, how to install an anti-virus tool? Malware is not permitting to open any anti-virus vendor's site and also blocking all sites opened via Google that contain the term "online scan". I somehow managed to download through mirror links with a Download Manager as the browser's download was blocked by the malware. But the problem didn't end there. After I downloaded the anti-virus tool, it failed to install because it needed administrative rights. The user didn't know the administrator password. I tried via command line with runas, but it also asks for the administrator password. The OS is Windows XP. How to deal with these type of malwares if there is a scenario that CD drive is not there only Internet is there?

Apache 2.2 on Mountain Lion ignoring ProxyPass and sending request to DocumentRoot

I have sickbeard running at 127.0.0.1:8081/sickbeard ProxyRequests Off ProxyPass /sickbeard http://127.0.0.1:8081/sickbeard ProxyPassReverse /sickbeard http://127.0.0.1:8081/sickbeard in httpd.conf And yet when I try and access http://example.com/sickbeard/ it gives me a 404, with this in the error log. File does not exist: /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/sickbeard Which I think means it's ignoring the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse directives? Anyone know why this may be? For what it's worth, this setup used to work under Lion. Anyone know where I can download a copy of Sun Java System Active Server Pages 4.0.3 for Solaris

I've contacted Sun regarding this and they have told me that the download is no longer available as Active Server Pages 4.0.3 is now End Of Life. We need to upgrade our server to 4.0.3 to acheive PCI-DSS compliance. Anyone know of a site where I can download older copies of Sun files? Sun offer 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 to download but not 4.0.3 which is going to cause problems come October when Visa stops accepting transactions from non PCI compliant servers. If Sun kept their naming system consistent across versions, the file would be called "sjsasp403-sol-sparc.tar". I know the real solution is to upgrade every site on the server to use a different server language, i.e. PHP, and in the long term, this is our goal but we have over 100 sites requiring upgrading and its not a viable solution to get this done before October.

IIS 6.0 subdomains with host headers and non existent subdomains

Hey Everyone - We have a wildcard A-Record pointing to our IP and have a number of sites running on IIS 6 with host headers and have a a wildcard SSL certificate for the domain so that each site can run under SSL. For example: https://A.foo.com https:/B.foo.com https:/C.foo.com Everything is working well but I noticed that when we type a non existent subdomain, say D.foo.com, it redirects to A.foo.com. Any idea why that is or how I can change that? I think we may have set up the A.foo.com site before we applied the wildcard A-record with our domain provider and before we had set up the SSL cert.
