  • How do I access an Ubuntu VirtualBox guest at a static IP from an OS X host?

    How does one configure an Ubuntu guest to use a static IP that's visible to an OS X host, and ensure that the static IP is independent of the host's network configuration? I previously used bridged networking for my guest, but I'm constantly moving my host between networks so the guest IP is always different. First, I tried setting the guest network configuration to NAT and forwarding host port 1022 to guest port 22, so I could at least ssh to a fixed address (localhost:1022): $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/Protocol" "TCP" $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/GuestPort" 22 $ VBoxManage setextradata "Ubuntu Server" "VBoxInternal/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/Config/SSH/HostPort" 1022 Then, $ ssh localhost -p 1022 ssh: connect to host localhost port 1022: Connection refused But this didn't work (guest has no network access with NAT and OS X refused the connection, as you can see). I'd love a general solution that would let me communicate with my guest at a fixed IP.

  • How to upgrade a single instance's size without downtime

    I'm afraid there may not be a way to do this since we're not load balancing, but I'd like to know if there is any way to upgrade an EC2 EBS backed instance to a larger size without downtime. First of all, we have everything on one instance: both our app and our database (mongodb). This is along the lines i'm thinking: I know you can create snapshots of your EBS and an AMI of your instance. We already have an AMI and we create hourly snapshots. If I spin up a new separate instance of a larger size and then implement (not sure what the right term is here) the snapshots so that our database is up to date, then I could switch the A record of our domain from the old ip address to the new one. However, I'm afraid that after copying over the data from the snapshot, by the time it takes to change the A record and have that change propagate, the data could potentially be stale. Is there a way to prevent this, and is there a better way to do this than I am suggesting?

  • HTML5 <audio> Safari live broadcast vs not

    I'm attempting to embed an HTML5 audio element pointing to MP3 or OGG data served by a PHP file . When I view the page in Safari, the controls appear, but the UI says "Live Broadcast." When I click play, the audio starts as expected. Once it ends, however, I can't start it playing again by clicking play. Even using the JS API on the audio element and setting currentTime to 0 fails with an index error exception. I suspected the headers from the PHP script were the problem, particularly missing a content length. But that's not the case. The response headers include a proper Content- Length to indicate the audio has finite size. Furthermore, everything works as expected in Firefox 3.5+. I can click play on the audio element multiple times to hear the sound replay. If I remove the PHP script from the equation and serve up a static copy of the MP3 file, everything works fine in Safari. Does this mean Safari is treating audio src URLs with query parameters differently than URLs that don't have them? Anyone have any luck getting this to work?     After using MacBook for two years, I bought 17'' MacBook Pro. I'm pretty happy with it, performance and all, but I also was going to record some music videos for YouTube. I play guitar and sing. However I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality that comes by default. I'm 100% sure my 13'' MacBook mic was much better at recording music and singing. Currently mic can't event handle acoustic guitar, outputting sound you'd think was recorded 5 years ago in ARM format on a Nokia phone on a loud concert. It totally feels like some lame filter is cutting low and high frequencies. I want to know what settings (visible or hidden) in iMovie or Mac OS itself I might want to tweak in order to get my MBP mic record clean sound.

  • Howto maintain an EXT3 filesystem

    Lately I had several servers which encountered a write error on an EXT3 filesystem and as a result of that remounted the filesystem read-only. Understandably on a production server this causes severe problems. On a reboot the filesystem where fixed but on large partitions this takes a lot of time. After the filesystem was fixed, correcting several errors, the server runs well again. What can I do to minimize the rate at which this happens? I can't seem to find much information on periodically checking the filesystem(s) on a running server. Is it possible to change the way in which EXT3 / the system handles write errors? What would be a sane solution. All servers which this is regarding to are running CentOS Linux 5.4 or 5.5.

    I tried on Flex 3, facing issue with uploading JPG/PNG image, trace readUTFBytes would return correct bytes length but tmpFileContent is trucated, it would only appear to have upload just 3 characters of data to the server through PHP script which made image unusable. I have no issue for non-images format. What is wrong here? var tmpFileContent:String = fileRef.data.readUTFBytes(fileRef.data.length); Is String capable of handle bytes?

  • Mac OS X 10.5/6, authenticate against by NIS or LDAP when both servers have your username

    We have an organization-wide LDAP server and a department-only NIS server. Many users have accounts with the same name on both servers. Is there any way to get Leopard/Snow Leopard machines to query one server, and then the other, and let the user log in if his username/password combination matches at least one record? I can get either NIS authentication or LDAP authentication. I can even enable both, with LDAP set as higher priority, and authenticate using the name and password listed on the LDAP server. However, in the last case, if I set the LDAP domain as higher-priority in Directory Utility's search path and then provide the username/password pair listed in the NIS record, then my login is rejected even though the NIS server would accept it. Is there any way to make the OS check the rest of the search path after it finds the username?

    An application is running on a windows XP prof machine picking up file from a network share from another windows machine. It detects that the file has been updated (by date and time or optionally file size) and reads it for any new data. Most of the time the last write time and file size, seems to be up to date. Occasionally, this information stops being updated, even though the file is growing (intermittently during the day) with appended content, so that the last write time and file size remain fixed at some arbitrary moment. This is visible in explorer, where it shows a fixed last write time on the reading machine. Just opening the file to edit it in notepad, immediately refreshes the file properties, and the other application picks up where it left of. The file location can't be changed, nor the location of the relevant applications. Any solutions to resolve this problem?

  • Blocked connections passing through firewall. What is wrong?

    In our company we have a small business router (Cisco RV082) on which we are using its standard configuration (block all incoming traffic). We also have an SMTP relay configured (using WS2008R2) so that our internal applications can send email through google apps (which requires authentication). The thing is that the server was being used to send spam. We fixed the problem by only allowing the server to relay email from our internal IP address range (10.0.0.0/16). My concern is that there was a way by which external IPs connected to the network and that underlying problem has not been fixed, but I cannot imagine how these machines connected. Any thoughts?

In past I used to handle a parent resize event, calculate the new length to set based on neighboring elements coordinates and setting the new size.     I used to record important technical meetings and demos using Camtasia Studio, using a Mic to capture the speaker voice. Sometimes we invite attendees by asking them to call us in the meeting, and they would call on a cell phone then we switch it to loudspeaker so we can hear and talk to them and also record the conversation on Camtasia. The problem I am having now is that playing back those recording produces the regular noise that results from the microphone being close to the mobile phone (the kind of noise you hear when your mobile phone rings and it is near a speaker). Any advice on removing this noise?

  • Website visitors are still being redirected after "fixing" the damage from a conditional redirect website attack

    BACKGROUND A website of mine was recently the target of a conditional redirect attack. PHP code was added to my pages to redirect visitors. The .htaccess file was edited to redirect visitors. I've re-uploaded my website so the compromised PHP and .htaccess code have both been removed. My site is mostly handwritten php and static HTML content. I don't use page comments or any third party libraries. THE PROBLEM After removing the compromised php and htaccess files, visitors are still being re-directed. What could be the reason that visitors are still being redirected? Are there any tools to check where/how redirects are taking place so I can debug the problem? UPDATE - PROBLEM FIXED As suggested in the comments, I cleared my Firefox cache and that fixed the problem (for me anyway). Visitors with old cache data will obviously still be re-directed.

    Whenever I log into a server using ssh. The prompt gives me "last login" information. I was wondering where this information comes from. How can I remove this record so when someone else log into the same server, the person would see my login info with my ip in it? So how can I do this? For the record, I am not hacking someone's computer and the server runs Ubuntu 12.04. EDIT: which file logs this kind of information? If I find the file, then I can do anything to it as root.   • Recommend a mail server setup for multiple domains

    Hi all, I've just set up a new Debian web server which I have done plenty of times before, but I want to add a mail server which I have never done before. I am aware of this question, but I would like someone to recommend packages and briefly explain how to use them for providing pop/imap access on multiple domains, a concept that has confused me for a while. I'm planning for this server to grow slowly but surely, from serving an initial 5 or 6 domains to about 20 in the first year, continuing at this rate. (yes, I've jumped on the cloud bandwaggon). At the moment, I have a DNS-A record pointing to my server's IP and nothing else. I'm assuming that I need a DNS-MX record pointing there too, but I haven't read up about it yet so today that's what I'll be doing. Hopefully reading up on the subject and the help that I get here will get my server up and running in no time. Thanks!

Can I created mycustomer.com DNS zone (STUB) just for the sake of listing few database servers and application servers and then for the other DNS records eg. MX, NS and the other refer to the REAL MX record entry so that my Exchange Server email flow is unaffected to mycustomer.com ? because if I just create A record in my current domain for some of the servers, the FQDN is not exactly what I want.
